Will a new indoor challenge start up with the new year? And will you be tracking minutes as opposed to miles? I really could use the motivation to get pedaling. Keep me posted. I'm ready to go!

Hi; I'm new here. I noticed some talk about trainers and riding indoors and settings. What I did with my trainer is set the resistance so it felt the same to me as when I'm pedaling about 12mph on a flat road. On my trainer, that's the second highest setting, and on the bike about the middle of the gear range. That way I feel I'm getting AT LEAST as good a workout indoors as I get outdoors (you can't coast down hills on a trainer - LOL).
Also, to Barb, sorry to hear about your back. I ride a recumbent, so I can ride even when my back hurts. My problem is motivation . . .
Dry roads,
Rick

PS ; Speaking of motivation, I'm up for the challange. Put me down for 500 !

Take care of that back, Barb! (it sounds like you are) I hope you get feeling better soon. If you don't, I hope you find a good chiro or something to help it heal. I'll be thinking of you and your speedy recovery.

Rats, I hurt my back last week lifting my mom's suitcase into the car and I can't ride right now. In fact, I think I need to be careful and wait until the pain is gone for several days before I get back on the bike... :(

Just when I was getting all stoked and ready to ride. I even borrowed a spinervals tape (2.0 Time Trial). I watched part of it today to see what it is like but I didn't try riding.

500 eh? A good goal. I'm in! To up the ante, I won't include my bike commuting miles (which I would probably use to slack off otherwise). Sweet! :-D

I might not make 500 with the holidays, but I'm reaching for the stars. Reaching for the stars Kelowna! ;)

I think I can force myself to do 90 minutes a week. 90 X 4 = 360. What with Christmas and all, that'll be a challenge for sure. :) If I include my November minutes, I might make it to 500. :)

I'm dying to get back on my bike and do some riding. Actually, I'd like to do anything at this point. I've been down with some viral nastiness since Sunday. I'm back amongst the living now, but still not at 100%. Hope to be up and riding again on Friday.

I'm going to set a goal of 500 minutes of indoor riding for December. That's aprox. 60 minutes twice a week for the month, with a little extra. I'm going to mixing it up with some running and strength training, so that should be a good goal. Anybody up for a challenge?

hey Kelowna, I know what you mean about the excessive sweating while riding indoors. During spinning classes I usually go through a bottle of water and soak two small towels with sweat. uggh...I can't wait. ;) It will payoff when we hit the streets/trails again right?

I saw Adam's post and decided I'd better get on my bike again tonight. Also forgot I did 15 min, 7.5 km last week too.

So total today:
10.6 km (30 min).

Total for Nov.
30 km (1 hour 15 min)

I was only going to ride for 15 minutes, then made myself go to 20, then went for 30. I am going to need to get a dvd or a cd to listen to. Instead I had my 8 year old chattering away.

Boy do I ever sweat a lot riding indoors...

I'm going to keep track of time and miles (or kms). And as soon as I can get my trainer fixed so I can ride at faster than 20kmh, I'll be able to rack up the miles. :)

So what's the word? Time and distance like Kelowna has in her signature area? How about a goal for December?

Average heart rate. If your HRM won't tell you that, you could guess. Higher heart rate doesn't mean better training either, FYI, but it's a decent measure. I'm easy... if you want to go by time, that's cool with me, though it doesn't track effort.

So you mean amount of time spent at a certain percentage of heart rate? I'd have to wear my HRM but it doens't tell me how long I've been at the HR, only the actual HR. I think just the amount of time overall would be probably be simplest. I really have no clue what would be fair.

The mileage tracking is interesting with the indoor trainers. I expect that the true measurement would be in Watts, which I should be able to get from my trainer, but not yet while I'm on the rollers. On my rollers I don't feel like I'm at a 20mph pace until I'm at ~27mph wheel speed, so it's tough to track I reckon. Heart rate could be another good way to judge distances, but we could simply put in time as well at a given % of max heart rate, which may be more fare anyway. Whatcha think?

Well, let me be the first to record my miles for the day. I did 7km on the exercise bike and then another 5km on the trainer once I got it set up. We're having a bit of trouble with the settings right now, it seems something is a bit off-kilter inside. Erik thinks he can fix it so for now I have to have the settings at a medium-hard resistance. Normally I wouldn't care because I can change gears on my bike to get to the level I want. However, since I am trying to put on lots of miles, it kind of sucks that I am working so hard and only going 20 kmh. :) Maybe I should have been counting the hours instead of the miles eh?

Nov: 12 km (about 30 minutes?)
