I forgot about the rowers. Most mornings I ride, I see women rowing in racing sculls in the river. They are way more dedicated than me, because at 6:45am, they are heading back up the river to the Rowing Club clubhouse. They inspire me to pedal harder.

Today I rode past a whole series of honey bee hives. I was pretty happy that I wasn't swarmed. :-)

This morning on my ride, I got stopped dead by a flock of wild turkeys all over the road. I wasn't sure what to do, or if they were at all dangerous. I know they're really dumb, so I just yelled at them. They looked at me like I was a space alien, and then eventually moved aside. I bet they won't be around in a couple of months when it's Canadian Thanksgiving. They're smarter than that.

From time to time I see deer grazing right by the trail or drinking from the path side creek. It always feels as delightful as spotting a unicorn. The other day a great blue heron flew up only feet in front of me and it made my day. I often see kestral falcons, red tailed hawks, and occasionally eagles and owls. Biking is such a wonderful way to be out in nature. emoticon

I see quite a bit of wildlife around here... frequent moose and black bear are the large ones. There are a lot of local grizzlies, but I don't really want to see one on the trail.
Then there are the eagles, hawks, Canada geese, grouse, coyotes, foxes, ermine, squirrels, snowshoe hares, and other small game. I would really love to see a lynx, but they're very shy.

I see the usual deer, fox, racoons and such. I cycle along a river, and often see duck families near the shore. I almost joined them the other day on my bike. Momma and babies were so cute!

In my area I have seen many deer, turkeys, fox, coyotes, and one mountain lion. There are so many deer there has been collisions with them and you need to be careful. There are lots of farms with everything from llama, elk, buffalo, ostriches, and exotic critters.

Lots of cows in dairy land-Wisconsin. Minnesota is very similar and great riding as well.

While riding in the Northern part of the state I've seen a few black bears and deer.

Reenen - I had the pleasure of spending a few weeks in South Africa (1996), so when I was reading your list I immediately knew where you were! SA is one of my favorite places in the world and I hope to make it back there one day.

I haven't seen too many interesting things while cycling. I have lots of wildlife around here - boar, fox, bobcat, coyotes, and the oh-so-entertaining rednecks. Lately, though, it's been quiet. Maybe because of the heat, although I did scare up a herd of white tail deer last week. They were on a preserve and we were separated by a fence.

Frequently see large antelope (like kudu and gnu) and small ones (like impala)as well as fox. If you know your zoology you would guess correctly that I am in Africa.

The other day riding along a fenced-off road there were two quite large Bhraman cows ahead. The more I tried to scirt them the more they ran along the road, thinking I was herding them. Surprising the speed that they reached! Anyway after a few km of this they either got tired or bored, and promptly jumped over the fence. The last time I saw a cow jump it was in a nursery book, that bit about the moon.

So what have you seen that surprised or delighted you while you were in the saddle?

I mostly bike on gravel and tractor roads on our lovely mountain, and see moose, deer and fox regularly. But yesterday I saw a wolverine scuttle across the road, just a few yards in front of me. Those vicious little critters have been known to take on moose and even bears.

Needless to say, I pedalled faster!
