Glad I could help! Now go out and proudly get your shorts. And when you feel like having fun – invest in different colors such as Dodger blue, navy or even red shorts!! I picked up a pair of Hawaiian print shorts online. They are fun to wear. You can find them at: http://www.aerotechdesigns.com/wildprintsp

Further to MAGELLAN's comment, get the tight shorts, and then throw a pair of running shorts over the top.

I agree with the bike shorts. Gotta learn to love them. I'm actually going to comment on your running/walking effectively. Please look up CHIwalking and CHIrunning. It is the only method of running that is considered effortless and injury-free. Consider finding a clinic to learn more rather than write off a whole sport. Just a thought...

Congratulations on taking up biking! 99% of the cyclists you see look ridiculous in those Lycra shorts – myself included. But I wear them because they do serve a purpose – ride comfort. DO NOT wear underwear under them. I did and experienced unbelievable pain.

Here’s my advice: buy the shorts and proudly wear them. Be proud because you are taking action. You are among the minority who want to change and ARE changing. Every time you go to the bike store to buy a SAMLLER size short be proud! You are taking action. Don’t worry about how you look or what others might say. Stay focused on action.

Welcome to the world of cycling! There are baggy shorts with the lycra inserts that have a pad. Some riders wear thin running shorts over their biking shorts. DH likes to wear bibs so the waist band doesn't roll down, I prefer shorts.

If someone had told me 10 years ago I would be wearing skintight lycra clothing and riding a bike all over the states, I would have called the men in the little white coats to take them away. But here I am. You, too, will learn to love those shorts.

there are baggy shorts with padding. you can call around and ask if they have "baggies". some mtb'ers were them. they are kind of like the tight lycra short sewed into a baggy pair of shorts. often the liner with the shammy is lighter/more shear then your typical lycra.

Good for you! Those skin tight shorts will save you. The underwear will act like a pair of teeth and chew you up. There are some special types of underwear but you need to find what works for you. I wear bibs and no underwear. There are some baggy shorts, check Bike Nashbar, Performance, Colorado Cyclist, or your local bike shop for more info.

I can no longer run or walk effectively, so I have found a new passion in bicycling for fitness and competition as well. However, I am a little hesistant in wearing these skin-tight shorts with no underwear. Are there baggy shorts that can be used for long distance bicycle touring?
