Me again!! Just had to get home and post that I actually did bike to work despite potential setbacks, ie, used Steve's bike and didn't have an alan key (I'm sure that's the wrong sp but that's how it sounds!) to adjust the seat so I'm up in the air stretching to reach the pedals, got to the shops and pulled in at the lawnmower shop and they adjusted it for me. Phew, great day today, a pleasure to be zooming around. approx 15k for me, most enjoyable, thanks for the inspiration. emoticon

LOL I know, I'm totally blaming him. He was 10lb5 born!! Not a fatty, just tall and solid. See Pics on my home page for evidence. I was going up a culvert at the time so that didn't help I'm sure.
I'm biking to work tomorrow...haven't broken the news to my man, just need him to sort my bike...don't hold your breath!!! Thanks for the big welcome, nice to find a thread that's amusing...I answer to lots of things but Vic be just fine. emoticon

Welcome Vikirae - your rear wheel buckled?? I've never heard of such a thing happening with a childseat. you feeding that child growth hormones or do you just grow them big down there in NZ? Sorry, I'm kidding. Glad to have you in the group!

Since we've strayed so far off topic I'll bring it back around. I rode 21 miles last night with a buddy of mine who is just getting into cycling. It was a pretty laid back ride since he's a newby, but it was great to ride with someone. I'm trying to do my part to convert the 4 wheelers!

That's 21 miles toward my final 500 mile challenge of the year!

Vikirae - yes, do join in! and your son buckled your back tire?! Wow! Makes me wonder what panniers would do on mine if I wanted to tour. Maybe it would be better to put slicks on my MTbike and use it instead...

Anyway, welcome!

Can I join in, can I, huh huh huh?
Do you need some idea of my pedigree? Ok, I love to ride my mountain bike, esp off road at Woodhill forest (Auckland, NZ)awesome tracks which are best through winter as it has a sand base.
Biking highlights...12 hr team event at Woodhill last winter from 10am-10pm. yes, it was dark and we had helmet lights. I've done a couple of small triathlons (special K all girl ones) the rides were only 10/20kms respectively. That sounds like I'm a bit serious about riding...not...I just like to do the events to keep me on task.
When our son was small I had a bikeseat for him and we biked alot;initially I had a road bike but the back wheel buckled under HIS weight!
When I'm into it I ride to and from work which is about 5k, I stick on my ipod and go... I love going faster than walking and going faster than the cars that are stuck in traffic is a bonus.
HOWEVER, my bike isn't working very well so I'm going to get onto my husband to get it working, cross fingers...I'll post some k's in the next couple of days.

I accidentally did 15 miles today! Seriously, it's only my...uh....3rd or 4th real ride. face got good and sunburnt. I rode to a park my friend told me about and it was WAAAY farther than I thought it would be! it was all uphill on the way with lovely head/cross winds. I'm counting that as a durn hard workout since I had Madeline in the trailer behind me. When we got to the park I thought I was going to keel over but I brought snacks which perked me up enough to ride home. When I let Mads out of the trailer, I was like "Go on- go hog wild!" but she just sat in the sandbox and dug for 45 minutes.

and yes, I need a good challenge for next year, milege wise! So far, in 10 days I've got 47 miles on my bike!!!!!!!! emoticon

Awesome! Looking forward to the cycling challenge of '07. We'll set a couple of different distances to get more people involved. hmmmm...how about a 3000K (kilometer) and 3000M (mile) division? Oh Well, we'll work out the details, recruit some more folks and get stuff set up closer to January.

I don't use an indoor trainer, and I hate stationary bikes. I'll probably just be doing a weekly spinning class for the winter and other things. I've been giving serious consideration to taking things up a notch and moving to triathlons next year from duathlons and working toward an Iron Man in '08. I've already decided to do my first marathon next spring, and I'll continue to do centuries, so why not put them all together with a long swim. makes sense, right? (that's me talking from masochist mountain)

cameras? hmmmm good topic for the gadgets thread....

I am in for a mileage challenge. I'm changing jobs in a few weeks which will free up some weekend time for some BIG rides. I'm looking forward to piling on the miles in '07.

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah... Doesn't that girl ever shut up? :)

Anyway also forgot to say - does anyone ride an indoor bike in the winter - or use a wind trainer? I need some motivation to make myself ride mine once the weather gets too cold. I'm going to keep track of my indoor and outdoor miles from November to February. If anyone else wants to challenge me, let's go for it!

Forgot also to chime in with "I'm a sicky too!" I have a cold - managed to go a whole week around the little guys at work (school) and despite my obsessive hand-washing, I still got one. Ugh. I could have been riding after school today but I feel crummy, and it's raining ayway... No km's this week...

I'm in for the 2007 challenge! I think I'll work towards 3000 km and then if I manage that, I'll go for 3000 miles. 3000 km is more realistic for me since I have this darn "job" thing to deal with as well... :)

Anarchist - I did it on my road bike, probably one of my first few rides on the road bike I think. I'm sure I'd do better now. Can you believe I didn't take ANY photos then? We don't have any way of carrying stuff with us other than my little under-the-seat bag and our jersey pockets so don't usually carry a camera, but still, it should have been a no-brainer to have the camera along for that ride... I want to buy a super compact digital camera soon - we're planning a trip to France next summer so will probably get one jsut before we leave. (Gonna try Alpe D'Huez - 14 km long, 8% grade!)

I do want to add that I was in Osoyoos when the temps were in the 40's (hmm, about 100-110 fahrenheit?) so we had to go fairly early in the morning. Still, it was darn hot, at least 80-90 degrees. I hate the heat so I would love to go back in the fall and ride up when it's cooler...

Hey Guys,

I am still here, but feeling pretty crappy. So to make you feel better Jeff, I will chime in with my health problems. This stomach thing continues to have the best of me. I will spare the disgusting details, but if you are twisted and really wanna know look up the symptoms of E coli multiply that by 7 days running. I would love to have a cold right now instead of this.

I was going to let it run its course - that is all docs would do anyway. I think it is getting better, but I finally went to the doc yesterday. It has been so long that I am actually hoping it is E coli and not something worse in my gut.

On the up side, my appetite is gone - completely. Bad food makes my stomach turn to think about it. I have been diligent about tracking my calories to make sure I get at least 1200 to 1500 per day. On the down side, it really sucks the life out of working out. I paddled last night, but I am going to take yet another night off tonight.

I am crawling up the walls, sorry to unload.

Adam, I would be up fo a challenge next year. Since I have so many sports on hand, I don't know that 3000miles is realistic, but I would be on for some other miles.

I'm on the mend. My immune system was rather weak thanks to allergies too. It's typically a sketchy time of year for me, health wise.

I'm in for a mileage challenge in '07. :-)

Is anyone still out there besides me, Barb, and Adam?

ewwwwww...Jeff keep your germs off the thread! Hope you're feeling better. My wife got hit pretty hard already too. Her problems started with allergies; the joys of living in Ohio.

Barb - I looked up some info on Google for Anarchist Mtn. There was a little bit and a few photos. Looks beautiful! Have you taken any photos that you'd be willing to share? Maybe I missed this part somewhere along the way, but was this on your mountain bike or road bike? When I first read "Climbed Anarchist Mountain" on your journal I thought you meant literally climbed, like mountain climbing.

I propose a race to 3K for 2007. If we get a few people we can start a new thread for the race to start on January 1, 2007. Any takers? It would be all in good fun and, at least for me, good motivation to get out and ride. Come to think of it I don't want to leave people out, so if there is enough interest maybe we could do different divisions like any good race day: the race to 500, 1000, 2000.

It's been a great riding year for 2006 thanks in part to you guys and the cycling challenge, and I'd love to carry it over in to '07.

OOOooo... I live at 4500'. That sounds like a fun ride, in a very sick and twisted way. I hear the endorphins calling me already. So it's not called Masochist Mountain, eh? ;-) So little time, so much to ride. :-) Next year you can beat up on those men, eh Barb?

I had a good link to some info on Anarchist Mountain but can't find it right now. Will try again tomorrow. It is one of the longest continuous climbs in Canada - but let me interject right here and now to make sure it is clear that I did *not* climb the entire thing ! I only went up to the first lookout which is a 9 km climb, going up about 1200' That was a huge PB for me because I had never done anything more than about 1 km long climb before and I didn't think I'd be able to do the entire thing without multiple stops... So in July, I did the whole thing in one go, averaged about 12kmh and finished in 34 minutes, only about 5 minutes short of the men who ride it 2-3 times week when we're camping. I was very happy. I'm sure I cold do much better now because I've come a lnog way since July...

Anyway, the entire climb is (I think ) about 75 km? - I could be wrong on that, but it goes from 900' to 4500'. The average person takes 3-4 hours to do it. I read about one guy who did it in 2.5 hours...

I'm down with a bad cold so far this week, but think I'm on the mend. :-/ I hope to get my commuters prepped soon for the winter and start commuting daily. My commute is short and on the back-roads of neighborhoods, so I can do it year round if the roads aren't too bad. Beyond that, I'll be prepping my trainer too. So... first one to 3k, eh? MUH-HAhahaha... I'm in. Actually, if I managed to get 1k more in this year I'd be pretty stoked with that. My head is rather cloudy at the moment, so the reality of these numbers isn't very clear. My planning will commence soon for my riding over the remainder of the year. This year is easily my highest mileage year already.

The cold-weather gear is nice to have. I don't have much, but most of what I do have has lasted for many years, so it should be a good investment if you plan to do much riding in the cold.

Barb, where is Anarchist? Can you provide any more info on it?

Adam, hang in there for those century rides and I recommend going on the side of caution in the mornings.

I'm gonna try to keep commuting once a week for a little while longer. It's getting harder now as the days get shorter. I'm not so crazy about riding in the early morning dark. The drivers don't seem to be so awake and alert, and some of the roads I commute on don't have much room to maneuver to get out of the way. It worries me. I'll probably be commuting again on Thursday...we'll see. On top of that my daughter has started kindergarten so I take her to school some days. I'll probably be doing more running this fall and winter than riding. I love to ride more than any other activity, but it can be time consuming.

I still have a metric century that I might do in mid-October and another century in late October. If I want to keep going I'll probably have to invest in some warmer clothing as well.

Actually, I'm not familiar with Anarchist Mountain, but any mountain with Anarchist as its name has got to be serious. I'd love to find out more about it if you have any info or links to info.

LOL, I'll be lucky to reach 3000 km before the snow flies, let alone 3000 miles...

Are you still commuting Adam? If so, you're going to stay way ahead of me now. I am finding it so hard to squeeze in more than 1-2 rides a week. I almost managed to sneak away early so I could ride yesterday but it started raining so I didn't. I am crossing my fingers for good weather tomorrow so I can do at least my 20 km lakeside ride tomorrow and that'll probably be it until the weekend... I usually blow work early 2-3 times a week and go for a ride before I have to pick my son up from daycare. However, it means bringing home a bunch of marking etc and doing work in the evenings... Ah well, it's worth it.

The weather is turning now, fall is definitely here. I need to go out and buy something to wear under my jersey, and some longer bike pants or I won't be able to ride at all soon....

Are you familiar with Anarchist?

hmmmm....a few thousand Jeff? what do you say kelowna first one to 3000 miles? haha. Blowing off work to go riding? Sounds like a great idea!

My new goal for the rest of the year is to ride 500 more miles for 2000 for the year! It would be, by far, the most I've ridden in a year ever.

LOL, I know... I have a cold coming on, it's supposed to rain tomorrow, I have two meetings after school and I'm *still* trying to figure out how I can bail on the first meeting so I'll have time to ride my bike across town to the second meeting instead of driving... And all because I want to get another 30 km in this week... haha...

I'm gonna be all over the forums with this one. I finished my first century yesterday! So, what I've seen in bikejournal you're about 60 miles down now! ha! It was about 129 for the week. Moving on to personal records now.

So sorry to hear about the e coli KCERIDON. Hope you're feeling better soon.

UGH, no riding for me this week. I had a bout of E coli and have been down for 4 days.

WARNING - Stay away from packaged spinach. There is a national outbreak of E. coli and it is suspected to come from spinach. I didn't hear about it until I was sick (still not positive it was spinach), but this stuff is still on the shelves!

Huh... well... I just got an account at BikeJournal. SkiGeek didn't sound appropriate, so I'm BikerGeek there. I am unsure of my yearly total, so I'll start at zero there so you two can duke it out. :-) Be careful though so that I don't catch you. I haven't figured out how to log my miles there... not as straight forward as the Google spreadsheet for sure, but obviously more feature rich. I'll try using both for now and cast a vote in a while.

Ride on! :-)

OK, well I always log my miles at bikehournal - love it - I even became a premier member so I can do the filters etc. I also post my miles on the Cycling Challenge so I don't have a need to post them in a third place, unless of course it is to brag, even temporarily, that I am 15 miles ahead of Adam... ;)

Hmmm . . .we were doing miles in my journal, but that got to be work. Then we switched to yahoogroups which seemed to work okay. Then we tried out google spreadsheets and now we are checking out bikejournal.com. Admittedly, my journal does not work cause I don't even have time to track my own miles anywhere these days. Maybe we should shoot for a consensus on a good place to convene. I did like my brief glance at bike journal, but haven't been able to delve into it. It has lots of options for things to track.

So do you guys keep track of your miles on this thread or what? Or should I just keep posting them on the Cycling Challenge?

Congrats on the job and big life changes Judy! Hope all works out. And congrats to the lifestyle habits. It is better when workouts are thought of less as work and more of part of life and fun.

As for 'Sticky Topic', I accidentally clicked 'make this topic sticky' and can't seem to undo it. I think it means that that topic will always end up on top of the list, but I had thought it was user set. Is it administrator set?

So what does "sticky topic" mean?

Anyway, hi guys and gals!!!! Sorry it's been so long but that just shows you how long it had been between rides. Finally got back on my this past weekend and again today so I feel absolutely great. Even with all that I had managed to loose weight.

I am now a college grad with a job. Yup, daycare is over, school is over (until next month), and I am employed. For right now I am enjoying going to work and having someone else tell me what to do! I know it sounds crazy but after taking care of babies and toddlers for 10 years I am ready to be bossed instead of bossy.

I am getting back on track with my workouts, never really lost track in the eating department. I guess those healthy habits have turned into more of a lifestyle....which really sucks some days.

Just thought I would drop a line and say hello again! Hope everyone is doing well. Talk to you soon.

The swim was awesome. I am slow (last in female age 30-34), but I finished! It was a bit choppy with Ernesto going through, but it was a lot of fun. It was an incredible couse, the water in the finger lakes is crystal clear and blue and not dirty (no salt or nasty taste). I am definitely doing it next year and my plan is to work on a little more speed.

It was really inspirational to ride out on the lake with a gentleman in his 70s. He did the Triathlon the day before and was doing the swim with me. He said 'Well, I won the Tri yesterday - in my age division that is' HA, I wanna be able to say that. I want to keep doing this until I can win my age division. I may have to be 95, but if I am doing a Tri at 95, I would say I am doing pretty good.

No riding though. We went for a wine country tour instead. Should have done that on a bike, what was I thinking.

Good luck with your swim Kimi! I'm on a commute day today, but this will be my last day of riding for the week. I'll be resting up (and working) the next two days for a 10K running race on Monday.

Hey Everyone,

Not much riding for me this week, because I have a 1-mile swim on Sunday in upstate NY. I hope to bring along the bikes for some liesurely pedals through the countryside. Hopefully Ernesto won't alter the plans too much - I am really looking forward to this swim so I don't want it to get cancelled.

Have a great holiday weekend.

Hey Skigeek,

I don't plan to shut down either of the sites anytime soon, so you can get all the info you need.

Adam, congrats on the milestone. I gotta work out more commutes, but I just got my boats and I doubt I will be giving up water time for saddle time for a few months.

Thanks Mike. Some of those long rides are actually commutes of 25 miles each way, but I left them as one ride. It's actually easier to just ride 50 miles instead of riding 25, sitting on your a$$ for 8 hours and riding 25 more.

I'm looking forward in a few weeks to knocking out my first century! September 16th just can't come soon enough!

Okay... I liked Kimi's Yahoo setup, but I'm more Googley and am liking the speadsheet more. It makes me glad I have high resolution monitors. I'm tweaked that I don't have info for my heart rate. Time for me to get a new, improved HRM.

Thanks for setting that up, Mike! Also, thanks again for your work, Kimi! Kimi, I still need to copy info from the Yahoo zone and your SparkPage, FYI.

Let me know if there are any things you want added/deleted from the google spreadsheet.

Well I have officially crushed my goal of 350 miles for the month of August and going strong. Maybe I'll bump it up to 400 miles for September.

I like the Google spreadsheet Mike. I got to play around with it a bit yesterday, and will be adding some more info soon.

FYI on the Google thing...
Anyone can get a Google account who has an e-mail address. To get a Google mail account (Gmail), you need an invite OR a text messaging capable cell phone to receive an invite code from Google after you request the new account.

Hey Mike G. I'd definitely be interested in checking it out. I've got another bit of Google goodness that I'm going to post in the gadgets thread shortly. If anyone would like a google account that doesn't have one drop me a message with your email address and I'd be happy to send you an invite. As far as I know the only way to get one is to be invited by a user. I have an email address with them that I use primarily as another filter. They have free pop access with their accounts, so I have all the emails that go through there forwarded to my Yahoo address. So, I still mainly use my yahoo account, but there a lot of cool projects going on at google.

I took a look at the yahoo group for tracking miles and noticed an earlier post on setting up a google spreadsheet. I took the liberty of building an online spreadsheet thinking it might provide a way to see more data at a time. If you're interested in evaluating it, send me a SparkMail with your e-mail address and I'll forward an invitation (note that viewing/editing the spreadsheet requires a google account).

Congrats Mike on the 40 miler! Enjoy the accomplishment of hitting that milestone!

CoachBev - Now that you've discovered the power of the aerobar use it wisely, because with great power comes great responsibility. Naaah just go mad with power and speeeeed!

I put in about 14 miles yesterday during warmups and the bike leg of my duathlon. Fantastic day and a fantastic race!

Today I did a nice slow recovery ride on my hybrid around the neighborhood. It made me feel a bit like a kid again too, as I was riding up and down our street with no particular place to go. I even did a few bunny hops and tore out across the front yard at the end of the ride!

30 miles on Friday and 25 miles on Saturday.
Used my new aerobars and LOVED them. Why has it taken me 9 years to get some? very comfortable. my neck muscles just need to get a little more used to it.

Saturday's last 5 miles ended with a big Houston downpour. I felt like a kid again riding in the rain and through the big puddles...wheeee!

Congratulation Mike,

I haven't done many 40 milers this year cause I was so focused on getting better at the short distances for the triathlons. Fall is coming though, so I am shotting for some metric centuries. One time when I was on a road trip a guy and his two sons were spending the summer cycling across the country. They had all their camping gear and necessities on thier bike and they were going through Glacier National Park. I just thought that was an amazing way to see the country. Maybe during my mid-life retirement.

Congrats!

hmmmm...I get the feeling you don't like to run? I know I'm very observant. It's a gift. :) I've noticed a new category at the duathlon/triathlon races I attend. Aquabike. At the upcoming Buckeye Challenge they have these:

Half Distance Aquabike - 1.2 mile swim and 56 mile bike only

Mini Distance Aquabike - 0.6 mile swim and 28 mile bike only

You may want to check the triathlons in your area and see if it's an option. As far as kayaking goes I'm an amateur at best. It is something I enjoy but don't get to do very often. The Little Miami Triathlon happens twice a year, in the spring and fall. This will be my third straight year of doing it in the fall. The first year we did canoes, but quickly moved to kayaks when it became available. They are single person kayaks.

Hopefully I'll have lots of good photos from the race as my wife and father in law are both going to the race and both are good photographers.

Hey Abiker,

Thanks for the encouragement. If I could find those duathlons that are swim-ride-swim or paddle-ride-paddle or triathlons that are swim-paddle-ride, then I would be all about it. Getting the feeling I don't like to run? n It seems race organizers think people fear the swim more than the run. If you look at my ride last night (gadget and gizmos thread), even on that really steep hill, my heart rate never reach what it does when I run.

I am curious about these kayak races you do. I do Hawaiian style outrigger (www.bostonoutrigger.com). I have been doing 6-man for a few years, but I am expanding into 1-man land. My new 1-man is due to arrive this week. I am hoping to be prepared enough to do the Beverly Challenge. My only goal being to finish it, but I need to get some time in the seat. Besides, I would rather be paddling than running (not even a comparison, cause there are lots of things I would rather do than run).

KCERIDON I think you're making the right decision if all the training is causing undue stress. That's the reason I stick with duathlons instead of triathlons for now. It's hard enough to find the time for running, bicycling and some strength training. My wife is very, very understanding, but I think even she has her limits. I'm adding on some kayaking time for a tri I have coming up that I'm going to talk about in the events thread, but that's mostly so I don't embarass myself in the first leg of the race!

As for the Yahoo Group. I'm diggin' it. The addition of the weekdays is a nice touch.

Hey Skigeek and Natheless,

Thanks for the encouragement! Especially thanks to Jeff for the reality check, I shouldn't lose sight of the "Bob Philosophies". Gotta trust that a great hedonist like him know something about being happy.

Funny, without stressing over the race, I already got a better ride in today than I have in awhile. You are so right, the forcing myself to get out there, reach a certain HR and speed, was just sucking the fun out of it.

As for the Yahoo records thing, check out the database I made for Week 33. Natheless, I think you will find it to your liking. I expanded the database to include days of the week. A little tweaking is good- I think everyone will be into it.

I was told before I did my first century ride that if you could do a 60 mile ride then you can make 100. I didn't really believe it but it turned out to be true!

Make sure you take advantage of the rest stops in order to eat something every hour and get plenty to drink.

Keep on pedaling at your own pace and you can make it!

And don't forget to take advantage of those massage tables they have at some of those rides. It will make a HUGE difference in your recovery from the ride.

I think I'm still going to track my miles in this thread, but don't worry about sticking them in your journal unless you want to keep doing it - I just like to do the overall totals and break down my days, but using this thread to do that is fine with me.

I think you are very wise to skip the triathlon - you are certainly doing a heck of a lot already, and anything that adds stress and detracts from the fun should get the heave-ho!

I'm facing a slightly similar dilemma with my own century plans - with 4 weeks to go, I'm not feeling like I'm where I want to be in my training. I'm going to go for it, and I think I'll be able to manage, but I've decided to give myself permission to do a shorter distance if I feel I need to. It felt good to take the pressure off, and strangely made me more motivated again to actually do the whole 100 miles. Goals are great, but I think they can sometimes make things that ought to be fun feel like work.

My program consists of eating well, getting good exercise and loving life as long and hard as possible.

This is it, your only life.

I'm happy with the Yahoo method, so no need for your manual tracking of everyone from my end.

Regarding you not tri-ing... there's this thing that Bob Dylan once said that sums it up well... it's at the bottom of your posts.

Hey Everyone,

I saw a bunch of you signed up for yahoo. So, do you still want to continue on with tracking miles on my journal?

I think I will be getting more miles in from now on. I have decided my heart was not into this triathlon I was going to do in three weeks, so I am going to skip it. Running 4-5 times a week and trying to squeeze in two swims, two rides and two paddles. I realized I was forcing myself to skip my swims, paddles and rides to go running and I just wasn't having fun anymore.

I know that sounds a little like a wuss out, but with a swimming event, a metric century bike tour and an 8 mile paddle race, I think my plate is still full. I can just quite focusing on trying shave seconds off my sad run times and get more swims, rides and paddles in! That makes me happy.

One last commute ride for the week. I might get in one more short ride tomorrow if the weather cooperates!

It was a ride so nice I had to do it twice! The commute home yesterday went off without a hitch. It turned out to be a nice afternoon. It was so nice that I decided to bike in this morning as well.

Week 32:

25 + 28 + 25 = 78 miles

Thanks everybody for the congrats! It is only August, I think I have many more miles in me before the end of the year!

Hey Jujubug,

How'd the interview go? Hope you had a good one and got to take a celebratory ride rather than a frazzled nerves ride.

Congrats Abiker. I doubt I will make that goal this year. Actually, I am not even sure how many miles I did up to week 28. I imagine it was quite a bit because I was training for a Triathlon and I managed to commute 3 times a week. Now, I am consulting at an office about 20 miles from home. I would ride it, but I would be lugging a laptop, tools and test set ups all the time. Plus there are several trips back and forth to my office and I just can't afford the time to ride it. I would rather do hills than commute with 30 extra lbs on my bike. I am trying to drop 30 lbs so I can go faster as it is!

Congrats on the big K Abiker! It must have been fun to do that shout out!

I wish I could go on a ride right now my nerves are on fire. I am heading on the door in a second to my first job interview! I want this job really bad....two and half weeks and I will hopefully be a working girl!

Way to go on hitting 1000 miles!!! That's fabulous!

And it's still only the beginning of August, too...

emoticon Hey everybody it is a big milestone in my cycling today! emoticon For the first time I am going to reach 1000 miles in a single year on my commute home today. emoticon They are forecasting showers for this afternoon, but I've already decided unless there are tornados and torrential downpours I'm going for it! Hope I'm not jinxing myself.

Week 32:

Thanks to KCERIDON for setting up the Yahoo! group. It's very simple to use. Check it out!

Okay, I am giving the Yahoo Groups a try for miles tracking. The group is called Spark_cycle.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Spark_cycl
e.

I disabled most of the features (messaging and polls and files) so that we don't detract from Spark for these features. The only feature enabled is 'Databases'. Anyone who becomes a member of the group can add a database and edit entries. Select 'databases' and you will see two entries for Week 31 and Week 32. I started there so people can see an example.

I invited a few people who said they have yahoo accounts, but anyone can join from the address above.

Try it out and let me know.

I yahoo: jujubuean@yahoo.com, someone will have to explain this group thing to me, I am clueless
messenger: jujubug@hotmail.com....just in case.

Went for the slowest ride of my life last night with my 9 year old son and his friends. I thought I would be the cool mom and take the boys for a ride. Well, they were all good steady riders. However, one boy was so slow I have to wonder if something is wrong with his bike. I was in my lowest gear and using my breaks and he was still falling behind. It took us almost 2 hours to go 12 miles.

My son---as I brag---has become an exceptional rider leading our little group and riding back to check and see where we are. I look forward to riding with him some night without others and see how he does against his Mamma....

I ride pretty much every day for little over an hour. I usually get in 20-25 miles at a 17.5-18.5mph avg. I usuually ride by myself because it is too blasted hot down here for any sane person to be out riding or anything else outside for that matter. I used to ride with a race team that would log 70-100 miles on Saturday at a leisurly 20-22 mph pace and turn around on Sunday and put up another 50-60 miles of a racier pace of about 25-27 mph avg. I gave that up because I had a hard time making time to ride that much. Then my back went out and I didn't ride at all. It feels so good to be back on the bike again!!

SKORHEIM03, it looks like you log a gob of miles weekly. How often do you ride and how far? Do you go with a group, solo, or somewhere in between? Just curious. :-)

I'm down with the Yahoo thing, so in reply, 'yes, yes, and me'. I'm not familiar with how this would work or look in a Yahoo group, but whatever is easier and works. It sounds like rounding up the info is becoming cumbersome, which is bad, so I'm game for a change.

Kimi, thanks again for tracking the info thus far! :-)

Hey Everyone,

I posted this week's totals on my Sparkpage. Since we seem to be getting lots of activity on this site, it is getting tougher for me to get the time to track this. I just want to poll the group to see if we can try something a little different:

- Who has a Yahoo account?
- Who has used Yahoo groups before?
- If I start a yahoo group for this group of people, who would be interested in tracking miles there?

The advantage is that if I set the permissions properly, then everyone can input their own miles directly. The caveat is that it is a separate site and there is some up front work for me. I wouldn't want to take away from the Spark community either.

Thoughts?

Skigeek~No worries here. LOL. I use you purely for motivation on windy rides. I had never thought of the wind as a training tool and now, thanks to you, I do.

Hey Judy,
Sorry to hear about your knee! While this is SparkPeople, I'm not feeling a 'spark' even though we think of each other in a headwind, so I think we'll be okay with this mental tie. :-) Way to go getting out for at least a few miles in the bad weather! Get well soon (the knee thing)!

We get a fair amount of wind where I live, not so much in the summer though, but I seldom become numb to it or stop riding, but think I know where you're coming from with that. I typically think of it as a phantom uphill and hope that I will get the phantom downhill once I turn around (wasn't the case for me this Saturday! :-( ). I greatly prefer to ride with other people, so that tends to enable a bit of optional wind-sharing, which is nice.

Ride on! ~Jeff

5 pathetic miles Saturday
Week 31: 41 miles

Saturday when I did try to ride it was out by the camp grounds, which are small, so I had to get on the highway. It was raining but I wasn't NOT going to ride. It was an awful headwind and the rain was pelting my face. I also popped my knee last week and so that was slightly uncomfortable. Instead of taking a chance of getting stuck on that very hilly highway I turned around. I am going to try to get on my bike tonight. But, if my knee still hurts it may have to be a walk instead.

A biker~congrats on the new wheel! Hopefully it will be nicer to you.

Skigeek~this is going to sound so bad:I think of you in a head wind too! You and my first ride ever. And I do, I think this is great training and a wonderful way to build up my strength. Thank you for that tip of advice! Actually, if you ride in the wind long enough in a session you will either become numb to it or stop riding...I push myself so eventually I become numb.

GAD, Bill!... 510 miles in 3.5 weeks from cold turkey is very impressive! I've had back issues too and am hoping I can work out my remaining kinks within the coming year. Good to have you on board! :-)

I was thinking of Judy this Saturday as I repeatedly road into head winds at various points on my ride. I kept a good attitude the whole time until my last little section when riding back home. The wind switched and I wound up fighting it yet again, which helped me to bonk and made for a very difficult return home. Oops. The wind got less 'training buddy' helpful in a hurry at that point. Oh well... hopefully I'll learn from it and eat a bit more next time so I don't bonk. *shrug* :-)
