What a great story--not just about being a good neighbor, or teaching your daughter about acts of service, but also about never being too old to learn to ride a bike, and also about what joy there is in, at the age of 52, feeling like a kid by learning to ride a bike.

I'm in Ottawa and everyone around here calls it ATB or Around the Bay...

I actually have Paris-Ancaster on the list as well - we have one here which is 10k longer and just as rutted up. The "Hell of the North" in Toronto is also in there - the muddier and more evil the terrain, the better.

Here I live in Hamilton and I've never called it ATB, but instead locally we call it "the Bay" or "the Bay race". Maybe it has something to do with the greater use of acronyms in the US compared to Canada.

I'm confused...Isn't ATB = Around the Bay?

Maybe you meant ATP? Ancaster to Paris? Never done it but people say it's great. I like Cambridge Tour de Grand. This year I'll forgo the longer mileage and do it with my daughter.

Way to go Norma!

I'm thinking of doing ATB next year... My sister lives in Hamilton so I'll have free accommodation in close proximity to the race course.

Congdrats on the run, good job.

I know your neighbor will love riding to the store. Good for you and your daughter for taking an interest in helping her.

You not only gave your neighbor independence, but you are teaching your daughter the intrinsic rewards of helping others. Win-Win!

You and your daughter have just opened a huge door of independence for your neighbor.

This is something she will never forget nor how to thank you enough for taking the time to teach her to ride a bike.

Bless you and your daughter for caring.

Well, I shouldn't mix two topics, but just wanted to report two personal goals:
- 2 weeks ago I ran in the oldest foot race in North America (older than Boston) Around the Bay 3 x 10 km relay. Our team finished 20 out of 250, and I did my very hilly leg in 57 mins. Anything less than 6 min/km is good for me!!
- My nine year old daughter and I taught our 52 year old neighbour how to ride a bike in 2 lessons over 3 hours without any falling! She road around the block grinning ear to ear. Next goal - get her comfortable and skilled enough to ride to the grocery store (she doesn't have a driver's license)
