I think I'll have to go next year. It would be a great way to see NYC I bet. This year, the same weekend, 25th anniversary. It's a mass ride too, with 25,000 cyclists. The Friday night before the Sunday ride, three's also the Tour de la nuit (night tour) with 12,000 cyclists.
I did the 5 Boro last year and it was incredible! It was my first tour, and my first ride over 20 miles, and it was an amazing ride overall. Registration started last week, and they cap it at 30,000 riders, so you need to make a move because it usually sells out, or so to speak. There are some challenging hills (entrance ramps to bridges, and going up the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway is interesting), but overall it's a hoot. There are so many people riding and so many interesting sights that your adrenaline really pulls you through.
I have a Trek 7100 hybrid (men's version) and it serves me quite well over the hills, dales and POTHOLES of NYC! :)
Chk-out www.bikejounal.com It's a great site for just about anything to do with tracking, forums, profile, etc. You have 30 days to play around with it before you're 'erased'! I chk'd it out for about two days and really liked it a lot, so advanced my membership right away, forking over the $20/yR. I've passed it on to others and now you're the next lucky one! :o)
I have a hybrid (Marin) that I ride to work - studded tires for winter, fenders, rack, lights, etc; a moutain bike that I don't use very much except when we go camping; and a road bike I bought last year - Marinoni made in Montreal, steel with carbon front forks, rear triangle, seat post, campy centaur components - it's sweet.
I've been on the Tour de l'ile in Montreal twice with 40,000 cyclists. It's more of a moving festival than a cycling ride / tour, but a lot of fun. N.
I'm in NJ. My friend has done the 5-boros ride. She said she was glad she did it once, but once was enough on account of there are so many people and it was tough trying not to hit the person's tire in front of her.
Check out the BTCNJ Bicycle Touring Club of New Jersey. They don't just ride NJ roads. http://www.btcnj.com/ There is info here on NYC riding, club rides and tours. other NJ groups: www.MAFW.org www.CJBC.org These two groups do NYC rides at various times of the year. There are rides planned at this time of year also. You have to get on the email lists or visit the websites. For MAFW (Northern and Western NJ) you need to be a member to access the website. CJBC (Central NJ) is free. I belong to all 3 bike clubs.
Has anyone ever done the NYC 5 Boro Bike Ride? I'm looking for a weekend away with my grrlfriends cycling, but within an 8 hour drive or AMTRAK of Hamilton (which could get me to NYC). www.bikenewyork.org/rides/fbbt/index .h tml
