I think I will check out that site too. Bill are you a full member or a free member? I like to use a site www.mapmyrun.com

You can trace a run, ride or walk. It's really neat to see my travel from a satellite.

Bill- thanks - I will look into it.

I am currently using a program called Sport Tracks that works well with my Garmin 305 Forerunner.

I think this is the year I will finally do a century. I've done metric centuries, by my longest ride is 72 miles. I think with work I can do it--it's a stretch goal for me, but I am going for it!

There's a wonderful cycling site that I belong to that's open to all and its free or $20 per year if you want access to all their offerings. It's a wonderful way to keep track of your miles, weight, cadence, etc. Check it out....www.bikejournal.com.

Thanks. I hope to be fully recovered by spring. Hopefully my badly sprained pinky finger doesn't require surgery.

My two broken bones (metacarpal) healed in 4 weeks. Here it is 4 1/2 months later and my stupid pinky finger is still trashed. I've been to about 25 PT sessions.

All from 2 seconds over the handlebars lol.

The goals that I stated on November 3d will be my final cycling goals. I've also worked out a reward system for meeting my nutritional, fitness, weight, and family goals on a weekly and monthly basis. Good luck to all on your goals. Let's make '09 a super adventure.

That is cool! Maybe it is something my hubby and I can do. We just got back from an 8 mile ride and a 3 mile ride (right after....it got dark and I wanted to put supper in the oven) so that is a total of 11 mile for two people who are recovering from some sort of ick. :)

One way to reward yourself cycling is through the CKAP program - Canadian Kilometer Achiever Program. It says Canadian and kilometer, but there are US members and miles. Check it out at ckap.ca. Every January one submits the yearly cycling log (a weekly summary of distance cycled - trainers don't count). CKAP tracks the km/mi from year to year and one can get badges and medals for meeting milestones. There are even trophies for man / woman who rode the most km/mi each year. And thre's a hand-cycle program for amputees.

A man named Frank "Woody" Graham from Columbia, SC, an active member since 1975 has logged the most lifetime km at 731,537 (that's 454,556 mi).

Our goals for 2009 for our bikes are to get ready for our first century ride. This will mean biking at least 3 times a week, whether outside on the roads or on the trainer. We hope to get to where we are back to at least this level within the next month. :)

Thanks for the topic - I have been cycling (road) for about 6 years now, but never set yearly goals. I just kinda went with the groups and did whatever.

One year, I did have a goal to do the local century in 4.5 hours. I busted my butt training and ended up with a 6.5 - my worst ever. I helped out on a crash scene, where a cyclist was run over by a motorcycle and ended up riding with one other rider, just really cruising instead. The following year, I had an unfortuante machete accident and was completely banned from any form of physical activity for the 8 weeks prior to the century - I rode it on "fresh legs" in 4.5(a 4 hour, 29 minute) time. The group I was in stopped 3 times for fluids for a total of 11 minutes of that time. I was so stoked!

This year, I hope to finish it again in 4.5 hours. I want to increase my enjoyment out of riding - I actually haven't ridden road with a group in over 6 weeks. I have only done 2 solo rides, and those were last week. I just lost my desire. That's what I'm hoping this group will help me find again - the desire, motivation and fun in cycling.

The World is a Better Place on Two Wheels!

I want to get more intentional about my riding, including:
riding at least 20 miles twice a week and tracking my miles and average speed, with a goal of increasing my speed.

working my way up to ride with the A group in my cycling club by the end of the year.

doing research on training, and following a program that will help me achieve the second goal above.

taking a more active role in my bike club--volunteering to lead more rides, and participating in more club rides than I did last year.

My bicycling Goals for 2009 are something I had not clarified until seeing this thread.
These may change but for now.
-Do at least 20 minutes on Bowflex every other day
-Take walks with dog whenever the paths are clear of ice
-Shovel driveway and sidewalks after each new snowfall
-Bicycle whenever weather permits
(all above are to stay in bike fitness)
AND when Spring comes; get back to 2008 routine of 20+ mile rides at least 4 or 5 days a week and work up to 30 mile rides with those pesky steep switchback climbs included

Hey psychic, good call ! ;)

Yep, this'll be a real stretch for me. I've done long-distance rides before (several double metrics, ~ 125 miles) but climbing has always been my nemesis.

So we'll see what transpires. I'll update my blog so you all can experience the joy. So to speak.

Well, I wanted to become a better climber, so I've gone whole hog, so to speak.

I signed up with Team in Training to prepare for the Markleeville Death Ride, which will be in mid-July. 129 miles, 15000 ft of climbing.

So my goal for 2009 is to complete all five passes of that stinker.

A pal of mine is one of the TnT coaches, and a couple of other riding buddies are joining with me.

This is gonna be fun!

*gulp* :)

My best year was 1000 miles, this year was 1300 miles. Next year I would like to reach 1500 miles....I have a busy full time job, so this would be a challenging goal and I will have to push to get there...

January goal: fit into ski pants by months end! Ack!

1500 miles

2009 goals: 3500 miles. This winter I plan to do strength training 2-3 times per week and go to spinning classes. I'm considering doing a time trial next spring.
I also want to improve my riding technique and get a really bright light for night riding.

I have an unofficial goal of at least riding something in every state. I would like to add 3 more states to my collection. Also:

ride 4 days every week, and get better on hills,
Florida Bike Safari again,
finish Virginia Creeper and New River trails,
Nachez Trace Parkway.

Temperatures are dropping!!! I went for a 30 min. run in -15C / 5F with wind chill. I know how to dress for winter running, but I must say I am a bit intimidated tonight thinking about the commute tomorrow by bike. How will I make it through February? I just heard that a cyclist was killed on Friday, hit from behind by a driver of a pick-up truck in the pre-dawn hours, a 34 yo with 4 children, a Mennonite on his way to work. The initial police response was "It's silly to ride in the winter." They've apologized, but it's unsettling. To those with temperatures above freezing - just get out there and cycle hard for me!!

Being an engineer who studies walking and cycling, I like to see goals like "commute to work; run more errands by bike". It's good for your wallet, good for your health, good for society and the environment, not to mention FUN. But in N. America, it takes some fortuitousness to make it work, go against the car culture, survive traffic, the weather, etc. Good luck :-)

My 2009 goals: B52W - Bike 52 Weeks a year which requires a 30 min. ride once a week. Ask me how this is going when it's -20 C/ -5 F outside!!
Commute to work when I don't need my car for travelling to meetings.
Tour de Grand 100 km for me and my friends, 10 km for my husband and kids (age 8 and 10) www.cambridgetourdegrand.com
Tour de Norfolk (if I can squeeze another day away from family) www.delhiontario.com
Weekend with my women friends cycling in Prince Edward County
Maybe a family cycling holiday on Le Petit train du nord www.lepetittraindunord.com

Some running goals too: 2x15 km Around the Bay (oldest foot race in North America) www.aroundthebayroadrace.com/
and a half marathon in May.

It would be great to be 20 lbs lighter - faster, stronger, efficient for 2009. Who needs a carbon bike when you've got 20 extra pounds one could shed.

My goal for 2009 is the Pan Mass Challenge. I am targeting the 190 mile route (2 days) but that depends on how many donations that I can get for the charity. I started cycling in August and continue to train daily by cycling, walking, or weight lifting. The farthest I have gone without a break is 33 miles and that was before I did any real training. I understand that going further than that will require more than just training so I am doing the necessary research too.

Trainers = workout/running shoes. Your frame won't be too big if it fits you already. From what I remember you have an aero handlebar setup on your Raleigh - you'll need normal drop bars (and brake levers). If your shifters are OK then leave those. You may want to think about changing your brakes from calipers to cantilever ones if your frame has mounts for those.

Cross it tough on equipment (I broke my chain yesterday) so the cheaper the better. But don't skimp on tires.

Thanks for the idea at least I would not have to convince the DW on getting a different bike;-) What are trainers? Are you sure my frame will not be too big? What type of handle bars should I go with? What type of shifters ( I currently haver levers)

My big goal for 2009 is the pan mass challenge but I don't know if that will happen. I would like to find some smaller rides to get started but don't know of any in New England.

Just partially retired and still have a 15 year old at home. I bike real early in the morning. When I'm finishing up, the gang is waking up.

Cross rules. Seriously.

Races are short (ours are 60 mins, but I know some races in the US for beginners are about 40) and very hard efforts. You learn how to bike handle in all sorts of conditions - mud, snow, grass, dirt, gravel, singletrack... Oh, and barriers too. You'll not be running a lot either - I probably run ~800 yards per race. Crashing is also a lot less painful than on the road too! And believe me, you will crash.

You'd not have to do too much either - use your Raleigh frame, add some knobbies (as large as you can go) at low pressures (I run 35-40psi) and probably change your handlebars/shifters and you're good to go. Oh, and MTB pedals and shoes although you can just go with platform pedals and trainers too.

Maybe the Sore Fanny option...not sure if I can actually bike 500 miles in 5 days, but I know I can do 250

Unlike Bill60 I wish I was retired and did not have kids at home...... but then again I would never trade my time with the kids I can always bike every day when I turn his age as well.

I'm shy of 1500 miles this year so I would like to try to get in 2500 miles from mid April to end mid November.

Super sprint TRI on 4th of July a Bike racr (37 miles) on the 5th, Race around the Lake (96 miles) in August, Tour de MAx (bike Club 100 mile) in Late July, Door County Century in Sept, 8 mile time trials ( bike club) every other Monday, I will check the calendar of events in Jan when the true dates of the races are set and see if I can fit any more in.

I will be competing with the better half for time to compete this summer.

Who knows I may even take up up cyclocross racing ... I was told about it and I'm intrigued .... would like to see one race to see if I could handle doing one with my knees?

I'm not very experienced and my goals are smaller goals because of this and because my family responsibilities limit my cycling time. My goals are to ride 50 miles per week from spring on, to find more cycling events in my area to participate in, and to use my bike for groceries/errands at least 3 trips out of 5.

I don't have any particular mileage goals in mind for 2009, but here's what I'm leaning toward so far...

100 "fast" club rides - on my list, that's Popsicle during the week (36 miles at 20-22 mph) or OAS on Saturday/Sunday (45-70 miles at 20-23 mph)

Race at the Superdrome at least 12 days (probably 3 race entries per day)

Train at the Superdrome at least every other week

Assist at least 5 riders in "making the jump" to the next ride up the chain (I don't dare try to surpass the list that gives me credit for accomplishing this in 2008, but I'd like to help at least 5 next year)

Ride Hotter'n Hell Hundred non-stop and under 4 hours on August 29, 2009.

I don't feel quite as intimidated now... My goals are to do at least one Century. I did one last year, but it took me 8 hours. I hope to do another this year at a faster time. I also have a very tentative goal of trying to run a marathon in late spring, early summer. I have never run before and am just starting to train now. If it looks like it will be too hard on my body, especially my feet, I will back off and stick to biking which will always be my first love.

Trying to stay fit, healthy, happy, and motivated

I'm hoping to ride at least three tours this summer--and all the training that comes before. One in Nebraska, one around Glacier National Park, and another I haven't chosen yet. I also plan to make 2500miles on my bike in one season. That will be a terrific milestone for me. Our "season" is from a wet and cold late February through a snowy and cold early November.

Complete at least a couple more century rides.

Average 35ish miles running and 150ish cycling miles per week.

I love my bikes, but digging running, so those two lil ole hobbies of mine are sure sucking at any time I have from my very fulltime job. Yowza.

LOAFYLAW don't feel bad, you are not the only one with "tiny" goals :P My goal this year was 1000km, it was my first year at road cycling and I finally got up to 1700km and that is BIG for me!

I want to increase that number in 2009, I would like to get at least 2000km and something like 3000km would be great!

At about this time each year I start thinking about my cycling goals for the New Year. Although not yet final, here's what I'm thinking:
Average 2 hours of cycling each day.
12,000 miles for the year.
50 rides of at least 62 miles for the year.
12 organized rides.
Continue my goal of 365 straight days of cycling (92 days so far).

What cycling goals are you thinking about?

Bill
