i would try doing the bike portion, it will be a good way to check out the tri scene and see if you like it. people are really friendly and supportive there. i think they are a lot of fun and also motivating.
i did my first XTERRA race (off road tri). i was really nervous about it, especially since i am not a great runner and barely run 5K on the road during a regular tri. the race was 1/2 mile swim, 11 mile mtb ride (technical trail with climbs and rock gardens) and finished off with a 4.5 mile trail run which was on single track and ran through the expert mtb section which is very rocky in sections, along with various grades of climbs and roots ext..
so my swim went well, 15 mins. 250 yard run to the transition area which i walked part of, i did well on the bike (as i helped build the trails and am expierence rider), the run took me 1.5 hour. i actually met a guy about 10 mins into the run and we cht chatted most of the way to make it go faster. thats what happens at the back of the pack....
so being a 45 yo female in the cleveland area who could swim, mtb and sort of run i did okay. (that that many active women here, especially that will go off road)first in my age group (but there were only 2 of us) but finshed well for me. i dont know what the results overall were but i think i finshed somewhere close to mid pac.
i had a lot of fun,even though it was hard and may do another one this year for something different.
