Seriously, maybe you overdid it. Cramping is a major problem and you may just have aggravated them during the tri and afterwards. You said you didn't do much running so that may have been a cause.
Also, I'm not sure 16 miles is a recovery ride, so you may have hurt them a bit more. A recovery ride is SERIOUSLY SLOW and short. After my Oly Du I went for a 45 minute recovery ride and only covered 15k.
So RICE your calves, take a couple of days to recover and everything will be fine once again.
