YAY!

I have to admit I didn't open this thread because I am an animal lover (check my spark page pictures to see me kissing my snake) and I thought your real snake died.

Glad "snake" can be fixed!

Hmm, we had the franken-fish here in Maryland a few years ago...Is that any relation to the franken-snake?

I am glad you found an LBS that would work with you and Snake is almost ready to go!

Franken-snake lives! I went to a different LBS today and thanks to the nice older bike tech and Shimano, Snake is getting a new gear drive. He will be ready by Wednesday. Snake tried to go towards the light, but has come back and will live to do another ride!

Now if you would have had a bike made in the 1990's with an aluminim frame this would not have happened. LOL.

However, if you truly love the bike but more modern components. Of course this sounds weird coming frame a guy who has not modernized yet;-)

As LDJONE said, you should be able to refit the frame with new components. You'll probably need to replace more than just the shifter, but just imagine Snake resurrected like Frankenstein's monster!

I agree with "mortgage." Keep an eye on ebay and eventually you will find a suitable replacement. And... what the heck would be wrong with replacing your existing shifter and related gear with something more modern...?? If you like the frame and the rest of the bike, that is...

You can find just about anything on ebay. How can just a broken gear shifter spell the end of your bike? What exactly is it that broke and why is it so special?

My 10 year old carbon fiber Giant road bike that I lovingly named Snake suffered a fatal injury during my ride this morning. The gear shifter broke and the LBS tells me that he can't get a replacement part because they don't make them anymore. I had to ride the last 17 miles this morning stuck in one gear.

This is a very sad day....
