Yikes! I love the good humor with which you shared those pics. They're awesome! Frightfully painful to look at, but awesome!
I'm only this far, and only tomorrow leads my way -- #41, DMB
I haven't done that since I was a kid. One of my friends loves her cycling sandals (has SPD cleats) during the summer.
OMG! A toe should NOT bend like that. Yes, you probably would have benefited from those Keen sandals with the SPD clips especially for such a quick trip. Speedy recovery!

On a side note: they do have sandals with spd clips...I use them when spinning on a hot day.
Hope you heal up quickly! That toe looks so painful

I must say even as a newbie .... I'm not sure I would have tried this. But now I know to not even try attempt or think about doing it!!!;-)
Hope you are feeling better now.
Yeah guys.....ain't a good idea to cycle with sandals. I was just running over to my friends place for a bit and I figured "What can happen over 12 blocks?". Well, when I leaving his place I was still in a high gear and instead of downshifting I got up on the cranks.....about 5 revolutions in my sandal slips off the pedal, crashing into the pavement....the crank spins back around, forcing my leg and foot further down. Then I slammed my crotch on the top bar, and fell face first into the asphalt, skinning my face, almost breaking my nose (may have broken it....it sure does hurts) and chipping my front tooth off. I dislocated my big toe and had to get 4 stitches at the ER.
I seem to be recovering quickly and should be back in the saddle next week...this time with appropriate footwear.
Pics of my face and dislocation attached:
