Bike computers are great, and I am glad you found one at Walmart that seems to work. And for that price, you can play with it for a while, and when you decide you want one with my features, pass it on to the next generation of rider as motivation!
Welcome to the team! There are several ways you can track your mileage. You can track them on www.bikerides.com and enter in your information. If you're looking for something to tell you how far you've gone you can get a bike computer for as low as $15 up to as much as you want to spend. REI has one right now by Cat Eye which is a good brand. www.rei.com/product/751833 *Link to REI - Cat Eye Velo 5 CC-VL510 Bike Computer* You can also map out your ride on www.googlemaps.com for free to just get mileage.

I have decided to make a better effort to lose weight this year...in the past I tried running and would end up with an injury that would put me down for a couple of weeks at a time...and I would loose that initial motivation. I started riding my bike and can already feel the burn...which is great. My budget is limited but I would love to start tracking my actual miles traveled....any suggestions would be much appreciated....I'm also trying to teach my daughter (6yrs) to ride her bike so I will have at least one partner in the future.
