After reading your posts I realize how lucky I am in Oklahoma. I have already put 300 outdoor miles and about 250 indoor this year.

I have yet to add up my miles, but it should be around 3300 miles, Up over a 1,000 from last year. Hope your feeling better soon Drummer... I've had a cold going on 3 weeks, can't seem to shake it.

Jaxgtr that is too funny! Way to go! My hubby is a big guy and has had that happen to him too. And like you he has Power in those legs of his and can drop people easily. The thing that got me is the guy just ignored your request to take his turn. That is rude. I'm glad you got a good ride in and you finished strong!

Here's to 2009!

So I finally got over the 2000 mile hump with my 30 mile ride today, man has this year sucked for riding. Today was absolutely fantastic, high about 77 with bright sun and not a cloud in the sky. Wind was light 5-10 and really low humidity.

Now for the funny. While I was riding, I was taking a nice casual pace about 15-16 and some dude came up and rode my rear wheel for about 4 miles and never saying a word, but I could hear he was breathing pretty heavy. I asked him to take the drivers seat and let him block the wind for me, he just looked at me and kept wheel sucking, I asked again a mile later, no dice. I don't drop people too often, my big behind catches a lot of wind and it takes a lot of energy to get moving too much beyond 19 by myself, but I did pick up the pace to about 20 over the last 5 miles and left him looking at my much small behind as I got farther away.

I finished the ride and it took me about 20 mins to pack up and head for home. As I was driving out of the trail head, I saw him limping up dripping in sweat all over his brand new Scott Addict R3. I just laughed and waved as I drove off drinking my protein mix.

The fact that this 150 lb guy got dropped by someone on a bike that cost maybe a 1/3 of his and weighs 295 is just funny and will be appreciated the next time I chat with some of my larger riding friends.

The farther away from the bike you get, the dumber you look in lycra.

I love the description "forget-me-not blue sky"! You must live somewhere warm and sunny. California or the south! Alas, I live in the pacific northwest and my description for the last 2 months would have to be "battle ship grey"!!!!

Oh to see blue sunny skies again! And not see rain/snow/and the gym every day!

All I can say is here's to spring for me! That's when I can see warm blue sky days again!

You are so lucky Birdygayl!

Just rode 29 miles with my bike club today. Forget-me-not blue sky after the fog burned off, temperatures in the 70s, rural island and marsh side low country roads with no hills, an occasional canopy of live oaks shading us along the antebellum lanes--nothing could be finer!

Adwrighter, that was me mountain biking at Whitefish, MT. My husband and I went on a biking "holiday" a couple summers ago to Montana and Oregon. We had FUN! We took along our mountain and road bikes. We did some spectacular rides. Have fun on your 11 mile ride today.

Connie, I'm with you 100%!!!! I too miss being outside on my bike. The sun, the scenery, the pleasure of fresh air! It's coming! I went to spin class last night with my daughter. The instructor really pushed us! She had us doing hills the entire class. Sitting standing sitting. Then intervals. 2 minutes fast 1 minute recovery for like 15 minutes. Then she really mixed it up. One thing for sure come spring my legs will be strong! I'll just have to work on increasing mileage/distance and endurance for long rides.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Dudette!
Was that you biking on Big Mountain near Whitefish (I checked out your pix). That gives me chills at any temperature. I was up there one August for a vacation
and
it
SNOWED!
Did i mention it was AUGUST?
I'd almost rather dodge Southern California drivers in the rain.... Almost. But I'm too old for that now. I think I'll be able to squeeze in about 11 miles today, the only dry day of the week. I'm with you on that SPRING thing, but for me, it's just for some light.
Happy Holidays everyone.

Sunshine today but a lot of snow on the ground! I went to spin class last night with my husband, daughter, and son. It was brutal. I am watching the morning weather and snow for the next week and then some. Warming up on Saturday to the upper 30s bringing rain. Maybe Joe and I will do a mountain bike ride on Saturday.

Dreaming of spring,

Just rained enough this morning to dampen the streets of L.A.
or as they say in So Cal
MONSTER STORM O8
"Our traffic reporter has a live look at all the accidents around the city..."
Which is what I watched from my stationary bike this morning.
Still, got in 'bout 65 miles this weekend, and (blushing) it was gorgeous. Sorry, but this is the reason I moved here from Philly.

No cycling here where I live. We are in the middle of a big winter storm. I haven't been on my "real" bike in over a month. Trying to get through this winter and staying in shape by going to spin classes 3-4 times a week. It's not the same and I really do not like it but if it will help me keep in shape for when the weather gets nice again, I guess I'll put up with it.

I'm jealous of all you people with the nice weather who are still cycling in December!

Green with envy,

Sue

How about snow shovelling and snowshoeing today! I think I may snowshoe part-way to work tomorrow and then bus the rest of the way. The roads are not too clear yet so the lanes are narrow for cyclnig.

Went staight home only 11 miles on the road, but that's 11 more than any of the last 4 rain days.

I much prefer the "going somewhere" riding. The world around us is so much more meaningful outside a gym, or my living room. But this week I haven't ridden my bike at all, even though the snow has melted. Too many meetings I need my car for. Just too many deadlines before the holidays. It's killing me.

Edit: I spoke too soon - 3" of snow overnight.

ADWRIGHTER:
Unless you're riding rollers, think seriously about some intervals on the trainer. Suffering does wonders for the boredom. Last winter I tried to ride aerobic on the trainer and nearly shot myself. Now my two trainer rides are intervals and drills of various flavours while my weekly aerobic ride is on rollers. The trainer's great because you can really kill yourself without having to worry about actually killing yourself (e.g. running into a car) on the road! And you'll see more fitness gains than if you go steady all the time.

A simple trainer workout is the 2x 20s - warm up (10'), then do 2x 20mins hard with 5' RI. Then cool down. Guaranteed sweatfest if you do the 20s hard.

Or single leg drills - WU, then 2-3' per leg @ 50-60rpm (mod gear) and 80rpm (very easy gear). Repeat 2x, rest is spin easy 1' between the low and high cadence intervals and however long you need between sets. No rest when you change legs though. Cool down afterwards.

Or the simple free-form intervals - go hard (really hard) during commercial breaks, recover during your show.

EDITED to add: Yes, I realise this post has nothing to do with tracking miles, so I'll say I got in 18 virtual ones on Sunday... I keep track of my miles (virtual and real) but don't really pay any attention to them. I never train by distance/speed anyway, I find saddle time and intensity much more reliable.

Yeah, tis the season to be rainy, so I got in 0 miles today, and it took me 40 minutes at 20 mph to do it.
Pedaling nowhere fast for the next few days, it seems.

I rode 27 miles with my bicycle touring club yesterday. The temperature started at 39, which is way too cold for Savannah, but we were up to a reasonable 50 degrees by the end, and it was bright blue sky sunny all the way, which helps.

Yesterday was my absolute minimum: 10.5 miles - and that last 5 didn't come till 9:15 last night. Still, that's 70 miles for the week on the road plus my 2 1/2 hours of spinning (roughly 45 miles, but it's different - no mad slalom through crazy So Cal drivers).

Let's get this out in the open. I don't believe this Bill60 guy really exists. I don't believe he's really 60, and I don't believe he's name is really Bill. And when does he find time to work? See? Let's call it like it is. Bill60 will from now on be known as Mephistopheles3000. Yes, he is the devil. After all, he is from Texas. I rest my case.
But I digress.
I got in my paltry 20 miles yesterday, racing around the Rose Bowl while I was wrapped up like an eskimo (devils, of course, bring their own heat). Honestly, I don't know where that puts me for the year, but I have been bike commuting all year (minimum of 11 miles - usually more) and weekends are between 40 and 80 miles, so I guess I'll hit somewhere between 6000 and 7500 miles this year (only been a member since November, you devil).
OK
What I'm really trying to say is, "Wow, Bill60, you rock!"
=)

Got my 20 miles in yesterday - late last night - after a glass of wine -
I would not actually recommend this.
But as I was riding around the Bowl, the worst that could happen, I thought, was that I might throw up on a USC fan... and how could that be bad.

Over 300 for the month and 125 for the week. Feel pretty good too.

The farther away from the bike you get, the dumber you look in lycra.

Short week so LATE nights, and threading through the drunk driver slalom in Old Pas,... while exciting... not great fun.

Dodged raindrops to get in my 20 miles yesterday to my amazement.

31 miles of hell today. 15 mph head winds from the NW and NNW and while the temp may say 65, felt way colder than that.

My name is Kristen. I have a LaMond Women's specific bike which I just got back in the spring but due to weather and then an unexpected pregnancy I haven't ridden it more than 8 miles so far. BUT I took my daughters for a ride today we went 43 miles. They are pretty pooped out :-)
It was a fairly nice day, no rain, very foggy, a little cold. We did a good job riding it's been awhile since we've been out.

Even though there is some "float" in the cleat, sometimes one has to play around with the position of the cleat. I have had 2 sets of shoes and both times I had to move the cleat by a few millimeters (would that be 1/32 or 1/16 of an inch?) to make the discomfort go away.

Hi Guys...
Thanks for the feedback on the shoes. I think I'm still getting used to mine, but they seem to fit well (supposedly Sidis are known for great fit, but I guess it's really all subjective.)

I had some numbness issues on the first ride, but the last one was better. Maybe I've just been cinching them down too tightly! I've broken my right foot a couple of times so it tends to affect shoe fit for me... so I think I'll just have to play around with the fastening on that side.

I'm looking forward to taking them for another spin this weekend!

Thanks again and happy riding!

31.2 miles with winds at 15, gusting to 25. Unfortunately, it was a headwind which made the ride quite challenging.

Well... cycling shoes may or may not need to be broken in... but... and this is a big BUT...

If you're not used to the inflexibility of cycling shoes, your feet will take some time to get used to them.

If in doubt, find the fitting expert at your local cycle shop and send some money his/her way to fix your comfort issues before they turn into injuries.

Bill's right. Bike shoes flex not... kinda by design. But, if you've got issues with them... especially in the toes, replace, replace, replace them.
That's not only painful, it's dangerous.
IMHO
Please bike carefully.

Because biking shoes are so stiff, I've never had a break in period. They've always fit right from the "get go".
