Hi Team.
All of you sound so busy, facing life's challenges.

We are still going to Fort Wayne five days a week. Yesterday's trip was a bit treacherous.
Yesterday, we left home ten minutes early with a "Winter Storm Watch" to head to the RAD center. It began sprinkling rain mixed with snow right away. We turned on the radio to learn that the "Watch" was cancelled and that we were now under a "Warning." About 5 miles out, it started sleeting. We got there on time as it was turning to outright snow. When we left, we had to drive about 40 miles an hour. There were a few crazy drivers trying to pass. But most were driving as we were. We saw four vehicles in the ditch.

At supper time, I noticed an evergreen tree that we can see out our dining room window was heavily laden with snow. It is right next to our storage shed. About an hour later, it fell. It is hard to tell if the shed might be damaged.

Darla: So sorry but I already dropped the small gifts off at the Hospice Thrift store. I'm slowly going through my closets and drawers to get as much stuff out as possible. I've got to break this habit of holding on to things I don't use. The other day I found an English tea pot I bought for a song (about $5) on clearance at Tuesday Morning. A specialty shop at the mall had the very same thing for $55. It will be a special gift for a family member or friend. Glad I retrieved it. Do any of you buy things and stash them as special gifts?

Enjoy each day.

Hello Friends,
Gail you get so much accomplished. I wonder if you might not mind sending me the dream catcher. I had one my ex huband bought me because he knows I am part Native American and my Dad was real proud of that part of him and even found our water well on our land by using a stick! He also worked at Sun Oil and would light a bow and arrow with a flame to relight the oil tank fire when it would go out and could usually get it on the first try! If you email me I willl send you my address. If it is too much trouble don't worry about it. I just lost the one my ex husband bought me.
I saw my caseworker yesterday and he was suppose to come for a home visit today but never showed up.But there is a benefits woman there and she helped me finish my paperwork for Social Security and i have an appointment with them tomorrow at 1:30.

I hope you don't have to have surgery again Gail! I can't shop for Christmas until I get my check from disability. Which will be in only a few days! Chris and Erin both bought a TV. Chris went to Black Friday at Wal Mart and Erin did Cyber Monday online and got one! They can affford to buy their own Christmas presents now! lol

What a busy day! Vic went for chemo today while I went for a CT scan of my head. I have chronic sinusitis diagnosed last week and am praying I don't need another rotor-rooter operation. This afternoon I had a timebank interview with a new member and it took much, much longer than usual. Tomorrow I have nothing planned and have been thinking of a tint at the beauty school. Hey, I need all the help I can get.

I just went through my purse and am suffering from buyers' remorse. I planned on putting together some holiday baskets for close friends and neighbors and went on a spree Sunday. I think I bought far too much. One Christmas bag was so full and so heavy it tore. I have the receipt so I just may return some of the things.

Today I gave away Christmas ornaments I will not need by posting on our local freecycle. The gentleman who came for them is getting his divorce in December and he gets no holiday things in the settlement. I was really impressed. He was a well-groomed man with impeccable manners...my kind of man. I'm so glad to give things to people with manners. The other items I have ...new things I will not use ...I'm donating to the Hospice Thrift shop. They were given to me as token gifts and I'm sure would be suitable for someone who will enjoy them. There's a fashion scarf, a high end luggage tag from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and a Stainless Steel Measure Magnet. Also, from non-profits/charities, I have 2012 wall calendars and a Dream Catcher.

Take care, enjoy the evening and do good things.

Gail

Enjoy each day.

Hello Friends,
Glad you had such a nice time with your family Laurie. Chris and Caitlin are back home and got some amazing deals at Wal-Mart for Black Friday. They got a 19 inch TV for $100! And a really nice comforter for their bed too. I was glad to have them back with me. I enjoyed my time alone too but really missed them and even missed the dogs! I see my regular caseworker today and so that will help and I will be able to ask more questions. I am doing much better than I was when I first got here. I was just so wore out from taking care of my Mom for so many years and going to college and just had kind of hit rock bottem. I still don't have a lot of energy but I am sleeping just around 7 or 8 hours a night now and not more. I stay awake during the day so I can sleep at night. Sharon Caitlin's Mom sent me a whole bag of romance books so I was in heaven! Now I have tons of books to read! I left all of my VCR tapes and only kept my DVD's but now they are going out with blue ray now. Always something new! Hard to keep up with all the techonogy changes!

Good morning to everyone. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I have been gone for just about 2 weeks I think so it is going to take me a long time to catch up with what is going on.

I went to Louisiana to visit my parents and family, came home last Monday night, unpacked washed clothes and spent Tuesday doing office work and payroll and left with my husband to go to Minnesota for Thanksgiving with his family. I sit here now thinking about all the travel time etc and I would like to spend the day reading, napping and sparking but duty calls.

This is an auction that's on Wenesday & Friday nights. Once in a while they'll have a special one. I always take a book (or two) with me as I tend to get bored easy. Bill likes to talk to the other men as a lot of them are military retired. It is interesting how much old stuff is coming back into fashion.

Kurt do you have the movies in VCR also? I'm thinking of sorting our movies and getting rid of some & we have both the VCR & the DVD. Mystery, western & scary is why I asked you. Let me know if you'd like some. As you know we've been on a clearing out kick.

For some reason I've been tired today. The preacher's wife stopped me & asked if I were OK. And here I thought I was beginning to get my strength back after all this time. I feel Ok & the problems that's popped up, well they involve some family memebers and thought thye bug me, there's nothing I can do about it & worring over them doesn't help anyone, you know?

Hope everyone had a good day. emoticon

Hello Friends,
I went to a few auctions with my ex husband when we were married and it was very interesting. So many things to bid on! I also like Estate Sales too. So many old things that people have kept in their houses over the years. I got a loveseat at an Estate sale for $25 one time! My ex husband and I were just teenagers when we got married and had our kids and we got a lot of things from Garage sales and I never had any new furniture until I got my disablity money and bought new funiture and bought all 3 of us a car but those are gone now. But I do still have a brand new coach and loveseat. I completly agree about the kids and how they are raised now. My kids had to behave in public or we did not go anywhere! plus I am just lucky to have 2 good kids!

Sherry: I've never been to or even heard of an Amish auction. It sounds like an experience. Here we have farmers' markets throughout the late spring to early fall. We also have local auctions and many of them are farm auctions. Sometimes there is a theme: guns, glassware, estate sales, farm equipment and machinery, etc. Years ago we went from time to time. You never know what you will find. Over 40 years ago we went to a gun auction. Before they bring out "the good stuff" they try to get rid of other things. We got a beautiful antique oak RCA Victrola with the metal plaque "HIS MASTER'S VOICE" on the back. It had 78 records, needles and was in perfect working condition. Nobody was interested; they were there for the guns. We paid $3.75 for it, a big deal even then. We still have it and it stays in our dining room.

Gail

Enjoy each day.

Almost everything I bought was pre-1950 -- B-movie mysteries, horror, and serials. I even ventured into western-mystery territory with a couple of DVDs.
Used copies of the really clear DVDs of old Monogram & PRC movies have really come down in price, so I've been replacing my fuzzy budget ones, as well as getting some that I hadn't seen before.
I've never bothered with war movies, but I'd like to find some old newsreels. There must be a collector out there selling DVD collections of them, but I haven't found one yet.

I'm not surprised to hear your story about the kids running amok. I've noticed that a lot of parents nowadays -- nowadays that spanking is illegal -- take their kids with them, but ignore them when they get there.
The worst (for me) is when subway stairs are blocked because an adult is guiding a toddler to walk down the stairs (the kid's holding onto the railing on one side, and the adult is holding the kid's hand plus the railing on the other side) -- and the adult is smiling back at all the people who are being held up, like "isn't this cute?" Not when I have to get to work and I can hear the train pulling in. That's happened about six times in the past year or so.
And just today I had to deal with another idiot who dragged a full-sized baby carriage onto a crowded subway car (which used to be illegal).
I guess parenting is different now, but I don't think it's better.

We sometimes go to an Amish run auction. There are like three huge barns plus an outside auction going on all at the same time. Plus there is food and small items you can buy outright in one area. One area has antique auction going on, another, furniture, small animals(baby chicks, rabbits, pigs etc), one large farm animals, another area has tools, lawn mowers etc.; another area has building supplies. Depending on the time of year, there are flowers or vegetable plants, fresh produce, or just plain miscellaneous junk. Next week they are having a Christmas auction but we are busy with our local Christmas parade float for the Church puppets and will miss it.
When you pay for your items you pay a buyer's fee, a slight per centage of the purchase; the seller pays a sellers fee also.
It is amazing to see the parking lot filled with horse and buggies plus trucks and cars.
We go a few times a year and like to take people down to enjoy it that are visiting us. It is really neat to experience. Sherry

We went to the Christmas auction last night but left early. Nothing we were really interested in & it was full. Several brought little kids & then didn't even watch them! Lots of items to be broken.

Got up this morning & began cleaning the utility room & pantry. Bill took out the book case where I had all my garening books. He'll use it in the craft room. I went thru the books & have 2 piles to take to the auction (on Wed) for 2 different women. The ones I'm going to keep I'll put at the end of the hallway. We'd put up a huge door size mirror on the end wall & have a waist high book case ther. It's shelves aren't high enough for the gardening books (hardbacks the length of a magazine) so will have to empty another waist high bookcase & switch. Bill did say he'd start my new bookcases in the orange room next week.

Kurt, what kind of movies do you enjoy? Do you like the war ones?

I'm tired but the house feels better. Last evening/night someone stole Bill's outside dog. The other little one & the big one was still there & there's not way they can get out. When we first moved here people were having their dogs stole all the time but we have a large yard all fenced in.

Hope everyone had a good & safe day! emoticon

Hello Friends,
Sounds like everyone is busy today getting ready for Christmas. I love this time of year and love the music and just the movies and all that comes with Christmas. Last Christmas I spent it with my Mom at the nursing home for their Christmas then came to San Antonio to be with Chris and Caitlin. I spent New Years with Mom and that was the last time I saw her. she died Feb 6 this year. I had not been spending Christmas with her for a long time. she was real depressed and it was just depressing to go spend it with her and my step dad. They never even put up a tree. So I just had a fun christmas with me and my kids. but I am glad i got to spend that last Christmas with her and New Years. I went back the next day and she was all mixed up and confused so i am glad i had 2 good times with her. I will be spending 2 weeks with my Daughter Erin and granddaughter Maddie this Christmas which will be fun! I leave Dec. 21! Hope everyone has a great day!

I'm going into the city to pick up packages from my mail service.
All of them are second-hand DVDs and books (maybe one CD), and quite a few were about the same price as the shipping or less, so the total price of all the packages together isn't much.
This is how I'll be treating myself for the Holidays until Christmas.
(I haven't found an inexpensive point-and-shoot camera, yet -- those "sales" aren't really sales, at least not to me -- still looking)

I'm embarking on a "clean out" today. There is so much stuff I do not need or use that someone out there is sure to want. Much of it is new: holiday wrapping paper, bows, To/From stickers, ornaments, new 2012 wall calendars from various charities, etc.

To buy Advent Candles. When I was a kid, we were the weird church and the weird family that lit candles and started preparing for Christmas right after Thanksgiving. I am from a German family. This was a Lutheran tradition, and our church was an off-shoot of the Lutherans. Eventually, it seems most denominations do the same & you can buy special candles. Both of my daughters are home this weekend, so I am going to buy them for early Christmas gifts - too keep this old family tradition alive.

My husband made fun of a local "thrift" shop. He thought it was more of a swap shop.

I'd come across a large thrift shop near one of the train stations, and today I finally had time to go there. They really didn't have any good junk, and the prices didn't seem to be very "thrifty" so I didn't buy anything.
I get so jealous of everyone who has the opportunity to go to lots of garage sales and such. They have them here on occasion when people move, but it's not the same as it is outside the city.

Hello Friends,
Well I cooked my chicken, corn, dressing and had made some crescent rolls in a glass pan and sat it on the stove and was eating when I heard this big explosion in the kitchen and I had forgot to turn one of the burners off on the stove where I had sat the glass pan and it exploded glass all over the kitchen. I had no idea it could do that! I still have not got all the glass out of the kitchen but got most of it up. I have been wathching movies last night and today and talked to Erin and Chris both yesterday and Erin today. Chris and Caitlin did 2 hours of Black Friday and got a 24 inch TV for $90 and Erin was on Amazon all day and got some great deals. I am saving for next year to do it some. You get such great deals but I may do it all online so I don;t have to fight the crowds.Glad everyone had such great thanksgivings with your families!

I had thought about shopping today. But I decided to stay safe and go during the week when others may be working. There will be many sales next week as well.

Today was a pretty low key day for me. A little bit of stress with DD's financial problems after talking to her on the phone today. However, I had a decent appt with physical therapist

Had a wonderful Thanksgiving with my Hubby and Aunt. My Uncle didn't make it as he has a cold, so he stayed home but, I did talked to him and sent a lot of fixings home with my Aunt. Hubby wasn't feeling too good either but, helped me a lot.

We talked to both kids and they are doing great. Our son went to his friends house for dinner. And our daughter went to her boyfriends house for dinner. We miss them both but, it was great to talk to both of them.

For Thanksgiving I fixed a special dish for each family member that is no longer with us. For my Aunt in honor of her partners I fixed Hawaiian sweet bread. For my Husband I fixed the Turkey the way his Mother did. For my Uncle I fixed green bean casserole the way I grandmother did. And in honor of my Mother I decorate the house the way she use to. In honor of my Friend and the other we raised a glass and celebrated their life and memories. It was a wonderful day full of great memories.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.

Good Morning:

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner at my house yesterday. It was too bad all of us were not here and we missed the others. My son and his family live in NC. He was working and his wife and the girls were in Orlando for a soccer tournament. He will join them some time this weekend. Also absent was our grandson who lives in upstate NY.

Truly, I couldn't have pulled this off if it weren't for my family. They did the lions share of the work. Oh, and before I forget, the Packers won so we had a lot of very happy campers.

Hope you all had a great day and that the holiday provided the opportunity for you to spend quality time with your family and friends.

Gail

Enjoy each day.

Hello....hope everyone had a great day!! Thanksgiving was nice. Hubby and I did a tour of a neighboring city today. We left the house at 7:20 am and rode a bus part of the way, continued with a two hour walk, listened to music. We also had a late lunch. It was fun. No family here in Florida, but talked to them on the phone.

Hello Friends,
I agree so great to hear all the plans that each of you have for Thanksgiving and Christmas! I put my chicken out to thaw to cook tom and called my daughter in law to make sure they made it to Amarillo okay. Talked to Erin and Maddie tonight which always cheers me up to talk to Maddie. she is going to be so surprised to see me in a few weeks! I don't mind spending Thanksgiving alone and they will be back on Sunday. Then I leave Dec. 21 to spend 2 weeks at Christmas with Erin and Maddie so it is great just spending this much time with my kids! Glad everyone is having a great Thanksgiving and so much to be thankful for!

It's so good to hear that you're all doing such nice things.
SRivers: celebrating someone else's life for Thanksgiving is so unselfish -- not anything like what I've been overhearing here at work and on the subway.
Most people here seem to be more concerned about Christmas, and what they're planning to buy or receive.
It was good for me to read everyone's posts today.

My in town relatives are spending Thanksgiving with in Tucson with my parents and since I'm single now I was planning on just spending tomorrow by myself and doing things like laundry and tidying up around the place and cooking a new recipe that I found. (On Spark? Can't remember.) But a friend from work asked me if I'd like to go out for dinner with her and her neighbor so I'm going to do that unless I'm not feeling well tomorrow. (Because of my MS it's really hard to predict how I'm gong to feel from day to day.)

I've had 2 other invitations from work friends, too, but I think I'm going to go with the first offer because I know that I'll have a really great time with this particular friend. It's really sweet the way my friends have all kind of gathered around me since my divorce to try to keep me from being sad and lonely all the time. Where would I be in times like these without a few really good friends...I don't even want to think about that. I hope that everyone has a really great Thanksgiving and that we're all sure to keep all of the reasons we have to be thankful (like good friends) in the forefront of our minds tomorrow.

Good Evening:

Well, we bought every thing we need for Thanksgiving, and tomorrow my daughter and her family are coming over to help put it together. My sil's mom is bringing her famous apple pie. I usually make a pumpkin pie, but I would have had to make it today and today is a loss, so I bought a frozen pecan pie. We will be having our traditional turkey and stuffing recipe, mashed potatoes and gravey, yams, and asparagus. I've got shrimp ( a seasonal treat), home made spinach dip and homemade salsa for appetizers. I'm not a desert person, so I'll skip it. Also, I prefer the dark meat and understand that is healthier, so there are no worries there. The only things I need to watch are my portions. Wish me luck. I've so much to be thankful for.

In our family we have a tradition whereby every person writes down what he/she is thankful for. Then we read the notes aloud and those at the table guess who wrote it.

A very happy Thanksgiving to all.

Gail

Hope everyone has a great & safe day tomorrow. We're staying home & Bill's doing the cooking. Kurt, bill paid $.79 cents for one can of cranberry sauce today. We'll go to my youngest daughter's on Christmas. Have really cut back on Christmas this year.

Got a wild hair & pulled all my fabric out yesterday. Bill helped me & we dumped it in the library floor. Then we sorted it & called this lady & asked her if she'd like some. She said yes & came over & picked what I 'd bagged to give away. Now I've got to put what I've kept all back in the sewing room, in order. Really didn't know I'd had so much. I've been given a lot over the years. emoticon

Last night, no students showed up (bad weather) so I punched out early and did a little shopping at the supermarket near the school.
I got a couple of cans of cranberry sauce (cheap for NYC - almost 2 for a dollar), and they had a great sale on 5lb bags of Domino sugar ($2.99), so I got two (couldn't carry more than that in the pouring rain -- I've got long walks to and from the train). I managed to get the sugar home without getting it wet.
Two frozen turkey dinners (one for me, and one for the woof-woof) and a turkey pot pie are already in the freezer.
Maybe I'll pick up a small can of yams too if the students don't show up again tonight (the weather isn't good today, either).

The school had a turkey dinner yesterday at 2:30 when most people don't have a class (I do). I just went down to get a plateful and brought it up to class, then went down quickly for seconds. At least I got to eat.

I'm still buying myself small second-hand things that I'd been putting on my half.com and Amazon wishlists for the past couple of years.

Good Morning Frugal Friends

I have been trying to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to our team mates that are active. I hope I didn't miss any body.

We often use gift cards at Christmas because we have more family who lives away than near. Plus, a couple of those living close have a lot of financial challenges.

Our one son-n-l is to start a re-training program on Monday - that should lead to being employable again. It was scheduled several times in the past. It ran out of money once. Then didn't have enough students to have the class a couple times. Hopefully it is a go this time. He is so excited.

We are currently dog-sitting for a family pet. He hasn't eaten in about 18 hours. This could be a challenge. It is one thing to kill a plant. But what do you do if a dog gets sick on Thanksgiving? ? ? Hopefully a visit from a cousin of his children will cure him. You can tell he is morning the kids.

I feel like a scrooge, but since all our family is up north, I send gift cards to everyone up there. We sent gifts the 1st yr we were down here and the postage was ungodly. This way they can get what they want and if they wait till after Christmas can get a lot more. With 5 kids and 3 with spouses, 14 grandkids and by Christmas 8 great grandkids, it gets pricey and we have had to cut back on the amount as the #keeps getting bigger! Our newest great granddaughter will arrive in a couple of weeks. I use the points I earn on my credit card to get some of my gift cards and that helps a lot-in fact, I just ordered them a few days ago.
For our friends, another friend and I spend 2 days baking cookies and more cookies and we give them out. So many of the older folks where we live look forward to them every year. One of the ladies, Ruth, who I take meals to all the time when I am taking food to dad came today and gave me a gorgeous orchid. She said it wasn't for anything special, just for all I do for her! It brought me to tears since I don't do it to get anything back, just to help out a friend.
Have a blessed Thanksgiving and don't foget to count your blessings!
Pat

Hello Friends,
Kurt- Cyber Monday is when the online stores have great deals like Black Friday does . It started several years ago and people like it so they don't have to fight the crowds of Black Friday. I never have the money for either one and our christmas is really simple and we just get each other simple gifts and just tell each other things we would like to have and that works for my family. My kids do like gift cards so they can pick out their own gifts but I like for them to tell me things so I can buy what they want. This year will be tight because I have to use my dec disablity check to go get my stuff in Oklahoma and put it in a cheaper storage unit here. I will be glad to have my stuff here in San Antonio.

I am going to have a lot of fun at Christmas with Erin and Maddie and see Social Security on Nove 30th. and will talk to them about what my limits are on working part time. They are really picky and if you can work they can sometimes say it is substantial gainful employment and make you pay them back. I owe them $6000 from working too much before. So I have to be careful so they don't take my check away again. I have tried to work full time but the stress always gets to me and I just never make it that long working full time so i think it is time to be realistic and just work part time. I have 18 pages to fill out to even get reinstated! But I do have some help with it this time and so I will make an appt with her to fill it out so I don't mess it up. I do have medicare and medicare part d which makes my prescritions cheap!

I hope everyone has a good Thanksgiving with your families and drive safe if you have to travel!

Although I know what Black Friday is, what is Cyber Monday?
Is that an on-line equivalent of Black Friday, or a special day to buy electronics?
I just came across the term and there was no explanation (as if everyone else in the world knew what it meant, which might be the case).

I buy local as much as I possible can, and actually that is quite a lot. The local Aldi's had a sale on Anchor Hocking batter bowl with a lid for about $6. I have one already and love it so I got one for a gift. It's made in the USA and they proudly put that in large bold letters on the stickers.

I heard on last nights news that there is an internet petition that is against the stores opening up during the middle of the night on Black Friday.

I am in favor of trying to shop with local, family owned shops - if you can find any. My dad was a small businessman and always pushed us to shop in those kind of places.

Kurt - Thanks for the links.

It has been interesting to read your posts. Most of us don't feel it is worth it to shop in the big crowds for the holidays.

I got up early and went to an hour exercise group in our community. Later I got into the pool to exercise my arm. Tomorrow I have an appointment with the the doctor for a follow up to examine my shoulder and he will write a new script for additional PT. The insurance companies are always having us jump through hoops for add'l treatment.

Hello Friends,
I agree with all of you that I never try to shop on Black Friday! I will only be doing a little shopping by buying my daughter a book she needs to study to become a ITT specialist. Then I will have to buy Maddie something for Christmas and want to get my daughter in law something. Erin my daughter called me last night and she bought me and her and Maddie tickets to ride a train on Christmas Eve to ride that is like the Polar Express with hot chocalate and gifts too! It is a 3 hour drive there and back but it will be fun! Hope everyone has a good Thanksgiving with your families! Darla

Sixty - Board games are great or puzzles are good.

On the subject of Black Friday - the deals are not worth it and the crowds are horrible. I shop all year long and get better deals and I am done with the Christmas shopping way before Christmas. This year I am making some of my gifts. One my Cousin and her family I always send Hickory Farms as the enjoy it while opening gifts. I only spend $ 45.00 and you get a lot ( 2 cheeses and crackers and 3 sausages). We send a smaller one to my Hubby's Aunt and that is about $ 25.00.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend and are going good on their November Challenge.

It sure doesn't sound appealing.
The before-Christmas sales (which start right after Thanksgiving) are probably almost as good.
But the crazy crowds start on Black Friday and they get more and more frantic up until the end of the holiday season.

Kurt, for years the day after Thanksgiving has been the biggest shopping day of the entire year, which is why I've only been shopping on that day a couple of times back in my college years when I went with friends and made a fun day of it. A lot of retailers make a significant percentage of their yearly sales/income on that one day. From what I understand there really are great deals to be had on Black Friday...if you're brave enough to battle the crowds (which I am NOT) and as a special added twist this year, if you're brave enough/stupid enough/desperate enough to go shopping around midnight. (I do not know whether or not stores have actually been open at midnight in years past, or if it's just the current bad economy that's causing that this year.)

Personally, I try to be a frugalist and I like to get good deals when I buy things. But I'd rather just pay full price at a reasonable time of the day than get up in the middle of the night to go shopping, and I especially don't like the huge crowds that are expected on Black Friday. And you're right, things are going to be sold out early in the day...REALLY early in the day since the madness starts at midnight. Some of the deals have already started (Lane Bryant and the shoe store already had a lot of things on sale this week) and some of them will continue on during the week after Thanksgiving...if there's anything left after what should rightly be called "Insane Friday."

Is it worth shopping on Black Friday?
People always tell me that it's one of the best times to buy electronics.
I've never had an electronic camera and I'd really like to get an inexpensive one.

I'd only ventured out on one Black Friday, years ago.
All the sales were gone by noon (and I went shopping in the early afternoon).

HarpLute:
I've done the after-Christmas sales a few times, but I don't bother anymore.
There's hardly anything left in stock by that time.
Even the Christmas cards & decorations weren't worth the train fare to go shopping in the city.

I was just wondering how many of you go to the "after Christmas" sales. My dil tells me the girls will be saving their Christmas cash for those. I too hate crowds. Almost always I go to the grocery on off hours.

Gail

Enjoy each day.

It has been a long time since I have been to an auction. I never saw any deals close to the things you have found. Your tables with the marble sound wonderful.

Darla,
It sounds like you are taking care of you.

Val
Perhaps it is the people who don't have anything to do but go shopping in the middle of the night on black Friday who are boring.

Pat
Sounds like you and your DH shop similar to the way we do.

LINDA!
I don't need the crowds either.

I am trying to figure out what would make nice gifts for our three youngest grandkids. They range in age from 18 months to age 8. I guess we should go to a store to get ideas. Books often work. But it seems they have so many, and I cannot be sure what they already have.

Just popping in to say Hi to everyone. Got out this morning and got hubby's Christmas present-he wanted a new razor and he picked out one on sale and he is a happy man-his just wasn't doing it so he has gotten his present early.
I worked some this morning and finished up this afternoon-now have all the Halloween/Fall decorations down and packed up and will get them stowed away tomorrow. I got the rest of the roses deadheaded in the front of the park and have that area weeded again. If I can get the rest of the fall flowers in the ground I will be a happy camper!!
Have a wonderful Sunday.

I went shopping with a friend yesterday and the mall was surprisingly not busy for a Friday afternoon. I think that people are hanging onto their cash and waiting for the Black Friday sales. One of the gals at Lane Bryant said that they will be opening at midnight on Thanksgiving/Black Friday for the sales. I'm sorry if it means that I'm a boring person or not enough of a deal shopper...but I will NOT be out shopping at midnight! (Besides, I have to work on Black Friday, so I'd darn well better be in bed asleep at midnight...)

There was much rejoicing!

Hello Friends,
Well today Chris and I saw a Caseworker and they have a Domestic Violence support group for me ot go to and a Bipolar and Depression support group. My ex husband was very abusive to me and my kids and like a idiot I have gone back to him a lot but I dated another man for 4 years and we just talked and it was so much better. Now I know I will be looking for someone more kind to me next time. But for now I just need to focus on gettting my life better. It will be a year before I can get housing unless something else comes along sooner. I will be working with all the groups and they do believe I can still reach my dream of becoming a licensed counselor! I just need to get my life together now and for my future. Hope everyone has a good weekend!!

It's really windy today & cold. But no snow!

Spent this morning getting the den on order. Still like a few things to do something wih & it'll be done. Talked Bill into making me a coffee table for my new love set. Last year I got a oblong piece of white, lacy marble at the auction. Think I only gave a dollar for it. Anyway that's what I want hime to use for the top. He'd brought back a piece of green marble , from Italy, when he was in the Army. And, last year he made me a small talbe with it as a top. It's really neat. We've began another load for the Agape House. The house is really beginning to feel lighter.

This year I haven't made a thing for Christmas. But maybe next year I'll get some thigs home made for a few. Sadly not everyone likes home made stuff. I need to sort & straighten up my sewing room. Got so much stuff that so many different ideas could be made up. I love to quilt but do them by hand & that takes time.

Time to get ready to go to the auction. Hope everyone has a good & safe day! emoticon

Gail's comments about family traditions was very interesting.
And Darla has more in common with me than she knows.

I was raised in a German Christian denomination that had some similar traditions to Lutheran. Having Advent Candles on our dinner table was a big deal.
My husband was also raised in a main stream Christian denomination, but his first wife was a Jehovah's Witness. Their children have pretty much rejected the teachings they were raised with. However, I have always seen some of point to their tradition in that Christmas is a religious holiday, not a marketing event.

In regards to Thanksgiving. We always observe it. Whether we have turkey or not.
It used to seem more like a religious holiday - no matter the faith background. But it too has become part of a marketing event. Especially Black Friday - which I have never participated in.

Good evening everyone-didn't realize I hadn't been on here since Sun. Have managed to get to the gym every day except Wed. Had to take DH to the dr on Tues afternoon and he got his hormone shot. He still has a knot where they gave it to him. 3 more visits for various things before his radiation starts.
We have been busy all week which is keeping him in better spirits. Tomorrow afternoon we plan to go see our friends who have finally arrived from NY. She hasn't been well so always glad when they get down for another winter.
We didn't get to go for our boat ride today-we haven't had rain in weeks, but it rained this morning. We needed the rain more than we needed to go for a boat ride so I won't complain. Our lakes are so low before long there will be no boating as folks won't be able to get out of their docks. Some of ours in the marina are unusable already and if it gets lowers even more will be.
Have a great weekend.
Pat

My entire family is Christian...some Baptist, Catholic or Church of God. We all have pretty basically the same Christmas traditions. When my parents & hubby's were alive we had big celebrations with lots of food, gifts and fun. As some others have passed away - SIL & BIL - things have dwindled. It seems now that the families don't get together. It is a simple time now with only immediate families. We don't see brothers and sisters but only chat on the phone and exchange cards.

Tomorrow afternoon I'm going to go shopping with a friend from work. That will probably take care of the rest of my Christmas shopping. I was hoping to make most of my Christmas presents this year but when I was just about to get started on that I found out that I was going to be getting a divorce. That's all over and done with now but I haven't managed to get very far in making Christmas presents so I guess I'll just have to start earlier next year. So we'll see how tomorrow goes. Originally when my friend and I started trying to do this (about 3 weeks ago before I fell and injured myself at work) the main idea was to go bra shopping (sorry guys emoticon ) but now it has evolved into bras and Christmas presents. I'm hoping we'll have a lot of fun.

Sorry, I have been MIA lately but, finished my Christmas shopping last week and the house is decorated. Just wrapped the kids gifts. They will be shipped out the first of Dec. We have a daughter on the East coast and our son lives in Southern Calif. my son's gift won't take as long. I still have my baking to do and want to send a few bake goods to him too.

Talking about Christmas and family, it is just my Husband and I and My Aunt and Uncle. My husband's Sister is a Jehovah's Witnesses and feels that Christmas, birthdays, ect. is the devils work. So, we don't talk about it, but I love to decorate for it and it keeps her away and out of our hair.( Sorry, she is a royal pain.) The kids are grown and have there own life's and busy working. But, we have a great time with my Aunt and Uncle every year. This year my BIL will be with us. He has rented his place in Southern Calif. and is moving up here to be with us. So, we will be having a ball.

Hubby and I get together with friends and I give out baked goods as gifts. We have a large extended family here in the Northwest and we all try to get together at least Once a month.

Well, I hope everyone has a great rest of the week.

Hello Friends,
That is so great Gail that you and your family have worked things out like that! I married into a Jehohiah Witness family and they don't celebrate birhdays or Christmas but I was raised a Christain and was not going to just not celebrate my kids birhdays and Christmas. Their Dad has done very little for them for their birhdays or Christmas which really hurt my kids a lot. But I just kept doing what I wanted to with them and ignoring my ex mother in law. I just couldn't take away their birthdays or Christmas. And we still keep celebating them. Chris and Caitlin and Caitlin's Mom all bought me a plane ticket to spend 2 weeks with Erin and my granddaughter Maddie at Christmas. My ex husband's brothers and sisters have been more supportive to us than he has. my kids dont have that good a relationship with him. They are closer to me. As for Cailin my daughter in laws family they all celebrate the holidays so it works out well with them. I am glad you explained Hannikah better Gail. I knew some of that but not all of it. It is hard when there are different religions! Hope everyone enjoys the holdidays with family!
