Gail, I used to do the same thing with green tomatoes and then I remember my mom used to pick them and set them in the kitchen window where they would ripen nicely. I have to get out in my garden and get some things cleaned up. I am also going to try my hand at a fall garden this year and hope it goes well. I will sure miss all the fresh veggies when I have to go back to the store.

Good Morning:

Well, I've been in a lot this week and am feeling better. So glad I didn't venture forth yesterday; it was very windy and you could see leaves and stuff blowing all about.

It's sunny and looks calm this morning so I want to get out there and pick stuff from my garden. I'll also pull a couple of plants to clear the ground. I've been picking green tomatoes a bowlful at a time and just letting them sit in to ripen. It works well. In the past I used to pick them all at once, wrap them each in newspaper and put them in a large carton in the basement to ripen slowly. Since realized they will ripen sitting out too, that's what I'm doing now. If a lot ripen at once I'll just freeze them.

Wishing you all a happy Spark day,

Gail

Enjoy each day.

Copperpenny - glad to hear the doctor released you for your leg.

Good Afternoon:

Thanks for the good wishes. I'm much better today and am not planning on going out. Boy, is it blowing out there again.

This morning I made pickled beets with the beets I was able to salvage from my garden. Some critters thought they were delicious and went to town on them. I still have some water the beets cooked in and some extra beets so I'll make borscht. All I need to do is add lemon juice and sugar to the beet water.

Sending all the best to all of you.

Gail

Enjoy each day.

Hello Everyone,
There were 4 women that trained in my class and one either quit or was fired real quick and they fired another one today! If you are not making money for them then they just let you go since there is training classes every Tues and thur so it is not a secure job. I just hope I can find another job before they fire me. I have applied as a Social Services Director job at nursing home in Bethany and talked to the administrator yesterday and she had not looked at my resume and she took it home last night to look over it. I will call her again tomorrow to see what she thought. i really need that job and I have applied for a counselor at a treatment center here in town too. I found some more to call about tomorrow so hopefully I will get a good paying job soon.

Gail- I have allegergies too especially this time of year and usually get bronchitis really bad but so far I am feeling good right now. I hope you get to feeling better soon.

Hope everyone else is doing well. Darla

Hello Everyone,
I got the scare of my life this morning! My only door the knob was not working and I was locked in my apt! I had to wait until the office opened so the maintence man could get me out and I could go to work! So he replaced it and it was broke on the inside! this is starting my 6th year in this apt so things are starting to fall apart! I called back to talk to the Administrator and she just looked at my application and not my resume so I told her I had been a Social Services Director before in 2 nursing homes part time and about 140 elderlly people and their families. There is only 52 in her nursing home and it would be full time there. So she is taking it home tonight and looking over it. I also sent my resume for a counselor job here in Norman that only requires a Bachelors degee. My Bachelors is in Family Studies and a Masters in Human Relations! I am trained to work with any one from birth thrur aging and families. So I hope I get one of the jobs and it pays as well as I think it will. Keep me in your prayers still! I do so appreicated the love and support and prayers! you are all wonderful! Darla

Welcome to our new leaders for accepting this added responsibility to their busy lives. We are very lucky that there are some who are willing to step up and help out. Let's keep them all in our prayers as they get their feet wet as leaders.
I am still having my usual crazy weeks-had our a/c check out today and it has a problem and the tech added freon for now but we have to decide whether to put $$$ into a 15 yr old unit or replace it. Decisions, decisions. We were hoping to get another 2-3 yrs out of it and have been putting $$ back but don't have enough to replace it yet so......what to do, what to do???
This afternoon I was at a finance meeting for our community and more decisions-we are working on our 2012 budget and trying to figure out what must be done, what can be put off, etc. Lots of decisions to be made so we can submit our recommendations to the board for their decision of what to submit for a vote to the owners.
I even got in a 90 min workout at the pool and made the decision to have a subway salad for dinner, so how was your day?????

We apparently can add several more. This will take pressure off of any one individual. We all have our busy times.

I get a blessing just reading of the good works that everyon is doing for those less fortunate. I think it is going back to everyone helping out those in need because the help they so desperately need is not always available or there is so much red tape they give up in frustration.
God Bless each and every one of you. Paying it forward is a blessing in itself. I try to take food to several in our community so make extra to share quite often-it isn't much, but when they tell me how much they appreciate it, it makes me feel like I am doing something that made a difference in their lives. When we multiply this times many others, we should all know that God is working thru many people and this is making a difference in their lives.
Many blessings to all my team.

Well I have not been checking in with anyone the past few days as I had a special dinner that I do for my mom and her 4 sisters every year and that was yesterday. It was our 11th gathering and they said they would understand if I wanted to give it up as it is a lot of work for me and a lot of expense. I usually drive down to Louisiana to do it. I don't want to give up seeing these ladies so we are going to figure out something else.

Linda - the fruits of the spirit are and interesting study and quite interesting that you had patience at this time. Hope all is going well as you are heading into surgery on Wednesday. My prayers will be with you and the surgeon.

Darla - Good luck with the social service director job you applied for and it was nice that the church helped you out like that. I also grew up eating red beans, rice, and corn bread and still like them to this day but don't eat them often. My mom always made hers on the stove and that is the way I still do it when I make them.

Sixty: My heart goes out to all those who are struggling, and there are many. Back over 40 years ago Vic and I were extremely poor and had two kids. It was so tough and I'll never forget it. So kind of your church group to help this couple out. It was probably a sacrifice for you all.

Great for you , Darla. Hope that you get the job you want. We were having a pastor appreciation/anniversary dinner (for them) when this young couple came in. They were getting kicked out as they couldn't pay the rent as they had to get her medicine. . They found a motel they could stay at but needed $150.00 for the week. Everyone dug in to their pockets & we got that much. We also sent all the leftover food with them. The preacher said that was the 1st time that he'd gotten that much money, in that short of time, since he became a preacher. We're a very small church. I did ask (a friend sitting by me) why they hadn't went to the big church in town. We're off the beaten path, so to say. He said the big church didn't help like that. Preacher told us Sunday, that they'd found another place to rent, the man had a job & they found help for her.

60 - Hope everythings going well for you!

Have a large part of the wash done & will hang out to dry. It's supposed to rain beginning tomorrow & on thru the week. Want to do some work outside also. Need to bring my flowers inside .

Anyway, I hope everyone has a good & safe day! emoticon

Darla-you just proved that God does answer prayers! Will keep them coming your way. I just know things are all going to work out for you.
We got a call from DH's son & wife today and after being laid off for 2 weeks, they are called back and going to work 10 hr days, 6 days a wk for now! I told them to pay off whatever they could and enjoy it while it lasts!
I did some grocery shopping today and gave Abbie her bath but after that took it easy and did some more reading. Tomorrow will be back to the usual rat race.
Have a great week everyone.
Pat

Gail-do that garden a little bit at a time and it will get there-that is how I work in the park and it all gets done-eventually!!!!

Hello Everyone,
Well could not trade my car in but one dealership said I could sell it for 10000 and then I would have enough money to buy a cheap car I owned and had only liabiliy insurance. I will have to go back and ask him exactly how to do that since I will still owe money on it but I am sure he can tell me. I went to my new Sunday School class today which is all women and they are great! I told them I did not even have the gas money to even get to work this week and they all put money in an envelope and it was $104! So I got my car filled up , got some groceries and cat food and still have money left! I get paid Friday and every Friday so now I have a place here in town to call Wed and they will help me with my rent for Oct and so it is just a matter of getting a hold of them that day. The church could help me pay the rest of it if I need them too but I wil just have to see the difference. Then I will be okay and on track. I am proud of myself for just cutting everything I can. I even got my cable, home phone and internet cut to just about $60 a month! I will basically only have local channels but i am fine with that since i really like to read and don't need ot watch so much TV ! I do hope I get the Social Services Director job as it would pay very well but I am fine wherever God wants me for now! God is so good! He never lets me down! Hope everyone has a great week! Darla

emoticon for the messages and goodies that have been arriving. I haven't had time to read them all yet, but I will.

If you didn't receive a spark mail from me yesterday, check my blog from yesterday.

I figured out yesterday that I am one of the junior church teachers today. My lesson is on the fruits of the spirit: PATIENCE. Since the kids are 4 & 5 year old, I will need some today, as well as in the coming weeks.

Good Morning:

House is all clean and sanitized and I feel great. Just got notification that I need to have my garden plot all cleaned out by 10/28. I'll never be able to do it all at once so I'll do it in dribs and drabs. Already pulled the beans, peas and a tomato plant. It's good exercise too. LOL

Enjoy the weekend,

Gail

Nan: Hope your appointments went well.

Pat: I'm so glad you take the time to enjoy yourself. With all that you have on your plate you need to have situations where you can relax and have a good time.

Enjoy each day.

Hi-I seem to be going MIA lately, but was glad to read you have gotten a job Darla. It may not be exactly what you want, but it is a start and will keep you in my prayers that something better does crop up.
I have been busy this week, 3 days of rehab for DH and my hr+ at the gym. I had to take dad to a dr appt and have had meetings for my community and have been trying to work in the gardens to get them ready for the fall. Hoping to start our fall decorating next week.
We have had a couple of dinners this week, one for the birthdays and anniversaries in the park for the month and tonite we had 25 people who traveled an hour to go to a German restaurant. We all had a great time.
We also got to visit with our Canadian friends who arrived last Sun for a month in the area. They used to come down for 6 mo but now only come for 30 days at a time.
Have a great weekend.
Pat

Hello Everyone,
Well I was sorta sick yesterday and did not go to work but went and applied for job as a Social Service Director in a nursing home. I have done that before and had about 140 people to take care of all at the same time and there are only 52 in this nursing home so that would be easy. But I am also happy at my job now too. It is easy and I have to set appoinments with business owners and I got my first appoitment set today and my boss got one too and she gave me that one also! So that will help on my paycheck. I got off at 3 and had made some red beans last night and made some cornbread to go with them for supper. I grew up eating that all to time and made it for my kids too. I had always made them in a crockpot because that was the way my mom did it. Erin my daughter said I could do them on the stove and I actually read the package and had no idea you could cook them on the stove! lol It is a lot faster! I just cook a lot from scratch like my Mom did! She thought I was a better cook because i can read recipes and she couldn't . Funny how things change from one generation to the next! Erin is 28 and taught me something! lol I have an appointment tomorrow at 3 pm to see about trading my car in for something cheaper and less in payments. I hate to do that but just cannot afford this car now at all. just doing all i can to make ends meet. Hope everyon has a great weekend!

Good Morning:

I made a vegetable soup yesterday and it is very delicious and hearty. Actually, I put in everything I had: onions, carrots, celery, rutabaga, beet greens, garlic, parsley, a hot pepper, a little olive oil and beef bouillon. I had something called Italian spices and I dumped in a lot of that too. I was afraid about the greens but it worked well. Any of you ever make a soup with whatever you had around?

Started reading another Martha Grimes book, THE BLUE LAST.

Enjoy your day,

Gail

Enjoy each day.

Nan, thank you and I will enjoy the time. It was fun getting together with them yesterday and we are meeting at a tea room for lunch today. Our son is flying in this afternoon and will be staying with us. I won't see the ladies until they come to my house on Sunday. I am getting real excited about the dinner.

Shrivers, it must be the time of year for company to come and it is good to spend time with them and when they leave you pick up the pieces and get back to daily life.

I am doing okay. I had a long and yes, a bit painful PT session today. Afterwards hubby and I took a short walk and stopped to get coffee. I will rest for awhile and enjoy the grandkids when they come over later.

Have a good day.

Good morning Frugal Friends!

It is quite cook here this morning and raining. A good day to sit and read if I didn't have so much to do. But I am making time for sparking before getting to the day.

Gail - I know what you mean about waste. We have renters and the things that they throw away is staggering. There are many times that I keep perfectly good items that they have left in their apartments or storage areas and use them myself. The weird thing is all of those people are always broke. I can see why if they have to constantly replace the things they throw away or leave behind. That gets expensive. I also hate to see produce go to waste.

SLS - You are a stronger person than I could be if you are working in a library and NOT buying something everyday.

Sixty - Sorry to hear about the bursitis in your hip as that will just add to having to figure out how to go about your weight loss plans. Also, having a place like Shipshewana close to you looks wonderful.

My company got in last night from Louisiana and I met them at Chili's about 8:30 for dinner. They are my mom, 4 aunts and one cousin and they are here to shop, see shows, and on Sunday they are coming here for a special dinner that I have been doing for them for 10 years, this being our 11th year. I have to say right now, there is nothing frugal about this dinner, but I don't mind spending money on family. This year our son who is a chef is coming to be the guest chef and they are going to be so happy and surprised I can't wait.

Have a good day one and all.

Gail, I've began to collect the MARTHA GRIMES series. I like to get the complete thing before I begin. That's why I'm just now reas=ding the J. D. Robb death series. They are really good but there's a lot of them! I've also gotten the ALICE PERRY series - both of them. I was lucky, in them, as several books were given to me. I've gotten rid of the horror books as I don't really care for them but do like SANDFORD, KOONTZ & a few more. Then I have a room where I keep my paranormals. They're my downfall! and I've been know to re-read them!

We had planned on working out in the yard today but it's starting to rain so we'll work in the craft room. They both need work! We've cleaned out the garden except for the tomatoes. Last year we didn't clean up the garden or flower beds as I'd read that we should leave them for the birds. Well, we feed the birds & this year they'll be cleaned off before winter. That was a mess to clean up in the spring! I'm hoping to find a bushel of apples so we can make some apple butter.

Hope evryone has a good & safe day! emoticon

Good Morning:

Well, I finished my last Martha Grimes mystery yesterday and it was very disturbing. It involved several murders including one about the torturous death of some children. I get no joy, no pleasure about reading of torturous murders in general (can't for the life of me watch CRIMINAL MINDS), and much prefer abstractions such as was found in the old Charlie Chan or Mr. Moto films of the 1930s. This was the first Grimes book that went this way. If another goes in that direction I don't think I'll complete it.

I went to the garden the other day and got some more tomatoes. Our community garden has an area where we bring our uprooted plants, weeds, etc. We are supposed to put our "extra" produce in a designated spot. This year I only saw something there once...a zucchini. What really disturbs me is that people will uproot their plants and just toss them in the "waste" area. We are talking about perfect produce. Why don't they bring it to the nearby food pantry, or leave it for other gardeners who can use more? I have gotten hot peppers, zucchini, and green tomatoes from there. The green tomatoes ripen in a couple of days if left on the counter...no problem. It's disturbing to that so much is thrown away. I guess people feel it's too much trouble to just put forth a bit more effort.

Nothing planned for today. I'll start a new book and might even try to start a sweater with some yarn a friend gave me.

Enjoy the day,

Gail

Enjoy each day.

Ben (GS) got his box yesterday & called & thanked me. Then, this morning, my DD called & said I needed to quit sending the kids stuff as her DH was getting mad about "all the junk" they were getting. And my GS (Ben's older brother) liked the t-shirts we sent him (birthday)but he wouldn't wear them! Now we've sent him t-shirts for aeveral years & heard that he loved them! She did say that Ben told her I'd gave him everything he wanted. Soooo -all birthdays/Christmas will be money. Yes, I' m hurt. They complain about his side never sending the kids anything. Guess it's a no win thing. Think I'll "adopt" a kid around here!

It's cool this morning. Going to weed some for the chickens & we'll be going to the auction this evening. Maybe the weeding will cool me off!

Hope everyone will have a good & safe day! emoticon

emoticon Good Morning, Frugal Friends,
It is slightly more sunny than cloudy here. The temp has reached the low 60s.

So glad to hear that Darla found a job. I hope you love it!

About grouchy husbands. Mine has never smoked, but he does seem to have more grouchy days since he was diagnosed with diabetes. Sometimes it helps if we find something to do a part from each other. I usually go shopping. If I don't have money to spend, I sometimes lock my purse in the trunk. I always park my car where a surveillance camera is watching it.

SLS
I think it is great how you give back through volunteer work. The type you do would help keep any of us centered on what is important.

Penny
Hope you feel better today.

Pat
We all need an occasional spark break. Your gym minutes are fantastic. My brother always talks about his power naps.

LAURIEANNIE1
I see you know how to shop.
People around here have been going to Shipshewana to shop for bargains. It is an interesting place in northern Indiana.
www.shipshewana.org/
You also talked about a friend using all cash & money orders. A friend of mine's late husband did that and he was the chief financial officer in a fairly large company. He would cash out his check at the bank where they had their mortgage. I don't think he had a checking account. But I think she did.

Gail
Love your photo of emoticon

I can't believe I went so long without posting on this thread.
I think I had some responses posted a couple days ago. When the phone rang, I exited out without posting what I was typing. We have been busy the last ten days with doctor's appointments for each of us, etc. I may have said this before, one doctor says I have bursitis in at least one hip if not both. This has really interfered with how aggressive my exercise is. I have had an MRI of my hips last week. Still haven't seen the doctor for final information or what to do about it. I have gained back a huge amount of weight since this came up. I am trying to figure out how many calories I should be on. I spend 5-8 hours a week exercising - but it probably isn't burning calories. I don't handle it well if I cut my calories too deep.

We don't have a free place in our area, except for re-cyling paint, newspaper, magazines, and glass. We got polyurathane - gallons for free there. We needed lots in building our home.

I do volunteer work at Quarter store. People bring all kinds of things in and donate. Clothes, household, etc. Proceeds go for the food we give out to those in need.

I love helping there and my department, you might say, is the library. When I went there they were piled everywhere, several people had made attempts at sorting but it just never happened. I am so happy to say that now it is sorted and people are really buying because so much easier for them to find books.

I have to be careful not to buy too many myself! I love books.

emoticon On the job, Darla! Hope it's just the beginning of great things for you!

It's 50 out right now & the fogs lifting. This morning you couldn't see anything.

Cost $10.65 to mail the big box to Bens. They said it would be there by 3 PM today. Told Dee to have him call me whwn he opens it. It wasn't for anything special. . This year they'll get money/gift certificates for birthdays & Christmas. They're old enough to pick out what they want. Except for DD. She likes gifts that someone else picks out for her..

Bill's got to take the truck in & get 2 new tires. I'm going to have him drop me off at the book store while he's doing that.

Not much going on & have that "yuck" feeling.

Hope everyone has good & safe day! emoticon

Hello Everyone,
I am still waiting for the second interview from Hope. They did not call today . I called a call center in OKC and they interviewed and hired me today! I start tomorrow! I have 2 weeks of training and get a partial check on the 30th and full check the next week! It is business casual mon - thur and jeans on Friday. I work 8- 5 mon - thur and get off at 3 pm on fridays. They only have 30 min for lunch but the lunch is provided and cokes are 25 cents! I will be taking my cup for water unitl I can afford to buy a coke every day. I can make a lot of money if I get the right calls. We have 300 calls a day to make! It is pretty easy and I enjoy talking to people on the phone. It is calling businesses about doing their check and debit card system for them. I can keep looking for a better paying job but for now I am just happy to have one at all! Thanks for the prayers and support! Darla

Good Evening-sorry I have been absent-took a bit of a break from Sparking a lot this weekend. Trying to get back on track today. It was back to rehab for DH and I spent 90 min at the gym and got in a really good workout today. We had friends drop by right after I had finished getting dad cleaned up and on his way home. They were on their way home from the dr so didn't stay long but nice to see his leg is finally getting better. I even managed to squeezae in a 20 min power nap before getting ready to go out to dinner. Tonite was the monthly birthday/anniversary dinner for our community and had about 45 attend. We had a nice time. We go early so it isn't a problem for a restaurant to accomodate our group and usually we are out of there before the evening crowd gets heavy. We had rain there but none at home-boo hoo!

Penny - it was real cool here as well this morning and looked like rain but about noon the sky cleared up and it is a golden day. Sunny and 73. That is too bad when you have people take advantage of you like that. When it's family it is even harder, they have very short memories about what you have done for them. I finally just started figuring whatever I did for them was a gift, not a loan until the point I stopped gifting very often.

Gail - We do have a freecycle here that I heard about on this team when I was reading old posts. I signed up but so far have not seen anything I could use. My neighbor and I are supposed to be having a garage sale next month and I plan on putting a lot of things that do not sell on freecycle. I had to go to Home Depot to exchange some liners for the wrought iron window boxes I got at a garage sale last week and saw they were $15.98 each at the store and I got them for $5 each. Also the boxes for hiding hoses were there for $19.97 each and I got them for $3 each. I was glad to see the savings. The best part is I needed everything I have been buying lately. It is all so perfect. Also, when I was buying Christmas gifts for my nieces and nephews I would get the gift and a lot of time the shipping cost more than the gift. I just started sending gift cards and they seemed to like taking the cards to the store and getting what they wanted.

Good Morning:

Today is my youngest grandchild's birthday. I used to go to the trouble of buying things and sending them, but now I just send a check. I think by the time they hit 11 they want to pick things out for themselves. Actually, it's more economical this way. I used to spend a lot on shipping.

Penny: I'm so glad Bill stopped smoking. His mood will change after a while, but it will take time. Hang in there.

Pat: How are you doing, darlin'? How are your dh and your dad? Remember to take care of yourself.

Darla: Still thinking of you and sending lots of good energy your way.

Kurt: Hope you have a good week. Is your doggy still doing all right?

SRIVERS; Haven't heard from you. Everything OK?

Laurieannie and SLS; Sounds like you guys made out like bandits. Don't know where you are but if you have a freecycle in your area you might check that too. Everything is free, and free is good. I got a Scandinavian leather chair and foot stool for free and it was in very good shape: no tears, stains, gouges, etc.. It's the only place I can read. Once we gave away a perfectly working TV consoleso we would have more room. I've also given away new things like wall calendars, food from my garden, etc.

Enjoy the day everyone.

Gail

Enjoy each day.

Sounds great on the yard sale finds.

My mother did the cash only thing. However she was good at the "get this for me & I'll pay you back" thing, Then she would insist that she'd paid you back (didn't) or tell you she was running short & would pay you later (also didn't) . Bad thing was, my oldest daughter would do the same thing. It got to where I was "broke" all the time & wouldn't buy anything when I was with either one of them. Was told that I was "tighter than a tree bark", but that was OK as I didn't have to be upset with them. It's easy to be taken advanage of if you don't watch out. Too bad it's family/close friends that try to do it.

It's raining out, very cool and grey. Think we'll work in the craft room today.

Hope evryone has a good & safe day! emoticon

Good morning team.

Darla - you are doing good with your weight loss. I got down to my first goal weight in April and decided to hold there for a while to see if I could maintain and also to give my body the chance to get used to the lower weight. My thinking is that when it gets used to that I can go on and lose some more without it freaking out and thinking it is starving or something. I am happy to say that I held the loss - being up or down in a range of 3 pounds or so every since. This gives me confidence to go on with some more reduction now.

As far as my chair from Pier One goes, I need to get a big pillow for the back of the chair as it is a deep chair and my feet stick straight out when I sit in it, thankfully I also have the stool. But there may be times when I don't want my feet on the stool so now I am looking for a very large pillow to match the chair.

When we lived in Minnesota I had a friend who did what you are talking about with all cash and money orders to get a better hold on their finances. As far as I know they are still doing it and it has worked for them. Like she said, when you are out of cash you just stop spending. No checking account to overdraw and no credit cards to try to pay off. I think they had one card which they would use in emergency situations only, like if the washer needed replacing or car repair.

Hello Again,
Laura sounds like you got some good deals . I love Pier One and went there to get some real colorful pillow to go on my 2 brown coaches when I bought them. They look really good on them.

I went to Weight Watchers and lost 4 pounds and according to their scale I weight 250 and my scale 245. So it is either 55 or 60 pounds gone according to the 2 different scales. I have WW until the end of Oct then I am done. I hate to quit but I can do it on my own or start doing Spark again. I just can't afford the $40 a month anymore. I am closing my checking and saviings account since I had things automatically coming out and didn't want them to hit my account and have late fees. the bank was really nice about it and I can always reopen another one when I get a job and get back on my feet but I have been watching this finacial woman from Canada that has everyone do things with just cash and I might just do that so I can keep track of all of it. It is pain to get money orders for bills but I can do it. Hope everyone has a good week! Darla

That was a great deal SL. I didn't stop at garage sales much but have been a little more lately as we just built a 3 season porch and I would like to furnish it without going broke.

Yesterday I stopped at a sale that they were just closing up because of heavy rain. There was an extra wide wicker chair with cushion, the footstool to match with cushion, and a 4x6 jute rug all from Pier 1 and I got them for $95. I found them on the website and the rug was $70 the chair $249 without the cushion, and the foot stool was on sale now for $99 without the cushion. Oh yeah, and a real cute fringed throw pillow to go with the set. We just picked it up about an hour ago in between rainstorms.

Hello Everyone,
Copper Penney- It is great that Bil has stopped smoking! I wish my kids would stop that! They have both tried to stop but end up going back to it. My son 's Father in Law owns 3 cigar shops so it makes it kind of hard for him to not smoke cigars! Even my daughter in a law smokes cigars! But I don't smoke or drink so it is kind of strange that my kids do but their Dad smokes and drinks so he has kind of gave them persmission to with his behavior. Niether one drink that much anymore. My daughter is too busy raising my granddaughter and since my son got married he has just spent time with her and his best friend trys to do things with all 3 of them. They are both busy going to college so that takes up most of their time. It is hard for anyone to break an addiction to something. Glad Bill quit!

I am just working on my apt. We are having an inspection tomorrow and I am also going to OKC to apply at Cox and get my medications too. So we will see what happens. Hope everyone has a good week this week!

Be glad Bill is still crabby! Yes, my husband quit smoking and now he is happy as a lark. Yup, he went back at it, except now with pipe. If you thought cigarettes smelt bad, after years I never smelled it any more but the 5 weeks of not smoking now the pipe is like terrible smell.
I know crabby is baddddddd!!! but it will stop and at least you won't have to go through it again. emoticon

emoticon Bill doesn't think he's as crabby as he is. Yesterday I stayed in my sewing room & watched the 3 DVDs of MIDSUMNER MURDERS & then read another of J. D. Robb's death series. They are so good! I keep getting told that he'll get better. One can only hope!

emoticon That was a good deal, SL. Bargains can be found if you look. I just - somteimes- forget ot ask myself if I need it or just want it. I still need to do some more de-cluttering.

It's raining this morning & is rather cool. They're having a dinner, at the church, at 4 pm. Have no idea of what Bill plans on taking. They just said to bring something.

I think we're going to clear off the beds & such beffore winter this year, Last year we didn't (read to leave it for the birds) and we had a mees to clean up in the spring. We have 2 different feeding stations so the birds will be OK.

Hope everyone has a good & safe day! emoticon

I would just like to share the fantastic bargain I got today. A full wall-size mural for a dollar at a garage sale. Woo Hoo! We were planning on ordering one; this was not exactly the one I wanted but it is very nice. We are getting ready to move into our new house and had a wall we were planning on a mural for. This saved us about 150 dollars plus shipping. emoticon

Oh my goodness there was a lot to catch up on today. The weather has cooler off by about 30 degrees here. I think the high today was 56 and it is finally raining which is good, but it could be warmer. It is hard to go from the 80's and 90's to the 50's and 60's in a day. We are supposed to warm back up next week.

Linda - Sorry to hear about your fall, hope you are healing well.

60 - About the class you went to, I am hearing a lot of people telling us to be prepared and it is not all because of natural disasters. As the economy keeps getting worse, those who don't or can't take care of themselves could be coming to those of us who do take responsibility for ourselves. I also know what you mean about not turning on the furnace. We do that too, just like in the summer we wait until we can't stand it to turn on the AC.

Kurt - I too see illegals in the post office or grocery getting money orders to send home. You are right, they don't spend it here and have no respect for this country. It used to not be that way, I think now they here politicians talking about how we need to take care of them and let them stay here. They have more rights than we do.

Darla - good thing you called to complain about your Cox bill, it could lead to a job should the others fall though. You just never know where a call can lead.

Gail - I only have a small vegetable garden this year, hopefully next year I will have a much bigger one. Most of my gardens are flowers and shrubs. Sounds like you have been real busy getting produce out of your garden and putting it up. I too like to cook from scratch as much as possible. I do not bake really as we don't eat bread products very often, but I am going to be trying a pizza crust that is gluten free this fall to see if it turns out.

Penny - Good for Bill losing 15 pounds and quitting smoking. I am rooting for his continued success.

Hope you all had a great Saturday.
Laurie

Good Evening everyone-hope you are all having a wonderful weekend. I have finally stayed home and just gotten things caught up here today. Thursday & Friday took some time for DH & I and that was nice-I call it a Staycation since it doesn't seem that we can get away for a vacation!
We went out on friend's pontoon on Thur after I got back home from taking dad to the dr for his followup to his hospital stay in July. There were 6 of us and we had a leisurely trip across the lake and up a creek to some friend's daughter's restaurant for a late lunch. DH & I were good and had the salad but the burgers looked really good. I even got in a 90 min workout in the pool when we got back so it was a great day for me
On Fri DH did rehab and I went to the gym and then we took off with friends for the rest of the morning and afternoon. Again, it was good to get away from everything and relax a bit after the past 10 days.
I paid for it and today I got things caught up at home but in pretty good shape now. DH took the golf cart he bought for our friends to them today. Our friend was hospitalzed with cellulitis for 5 days and still having some problems and had to go to ER on Thur nite as the antibiotic was causing him to break out. Now he will be able to move around their campground without having to walk on his leg! He got a bargain as this was our original golf cart and just 3 yrs ago we pd $400 for the new charger and $200 for the wind cover and we had put new batteries in it so for $200 they have wheels to tool around in!
I am envious of all those cooler temps although we have cooled off a bit-going to be high 80's this coming week and down to about 70 at nite this week - we won't get the really cooler temps for another month or so.
Kurt I do not envy you with the melting pot you deal with and I am sure everything you said was true. Even in the midwest it was bad enough. I remember going to a dr who had to examine my DH when he was going for his disability (at 63) and they had a big sign in the office, free mammograms for all Russian women. Why isn't it free for all the people who have worked and supported the economy of this country. This country has gotten so far out of whack I don't think it can ever be brought back.
I remember when I went back to college in my 30's and all the youngsters were there, it was terrible-they interrupted the teachers, didn't show up half the time, etc, all because they had no stake in things-they weren't paying for their education, either their parents or the government was. You could tell those of us who had to pony up for our schooling, we paid attention and worked for the grades! That was nearly 30 yrs ago and I am sure it is a lot worse now.
Have a great weekend.
Pat

Hello Everyone,
Gail and Sixty- I make things from scratch too but also know how to read a recipe so my Mom thought I was a better cook than she was since I could read a recipe and she couldn't but she made everything from scratch. I was very busy single Mother so I was doing good to just get my kids fed at all! lol I would still like to make some homemade tortillas like my Mom use to make.

I got on the scale today and I am 245 down from 305! So 60 pounds gone! I can't afford to go to Weight Watchers anymore and get all my support on here anyway so when I get a job I will start doing Spark again. I have not been exercising but need to get back to that too.

I enjoy all the comments on here and wish everyone well in all that you do! Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Harplute (& everyone else):
Someone at another team posted articles about how the food we have now can make you fat -- everything from what the animals are fed to the lining in cans and plastic packaging. One of the articles is here:
www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/02/11/e
ar
lyshow/health/main6197493.shtml

These "things" have been categorized as "obesogens" (they can also be toxic as well as fattening).

Goof Morning:

It will be a beautiful cool day today, here in Madison, WI.

I just read Sixty's posting and was intrigued by the fact that she said she wanted to cook more like her grandmothers. I guess I've most always done things from scratch, and since I learned about pesticides and all the preservatives they put into canned, boxed and frozen foods I do yet more. As you well know, I now grow and freeze as much of my own food as I can. I sometimes make my own yogurt and make bread and pizza dough during the winter. I started out doing this decades ago because it was cheaper. In later years it wasn't so much to be economical as it was for my own enjoyment and creativity. In recent years it's been because I didn't want to introduce any more chemicals into Vic's diet. He gets plenty of poison with the chemo. I rather lost track of the savings aspect the last few years because I've had other things on my mind, but if you think about it, it's outrageous how much they charge for things. Hummus, pizza, pasta sauce, stewed fruit and applesauce, salsa, deli salads, etc. are so much less expensive and better tasting when made from scratch. I also don't by prepared food. When fixing meat balls, casseroles, and other dishes I freeze at least half and pull them out when I don't feel like cooking or have had a long day. I've done this for close to 50 years.

These days I figure I spend less on food than the average household, even though I buy organic fruit and veggies.

Enjoy the weekend everyone.

Gail

Enjoy each day.
