When I left my office career and moved to FL, I gave away literally huge black leaf bags full of clothes and shoes. When I moved last year, I gave away some sentimental items I had been hanging onto forever that will never fit again. Now I'm going to finally give away the size 8's, because I'll be lucky to get back to a 10 one day. I work from home, so I don't have any dress clothes at all (since I don't socialize). I don't even own a dress, live in jeans/shorts and casual shirts. I still would like to get down to fewer clothes, like maybe 7-10 shirts, 5 pairs of shorts and 3 pairs of jeans. My bugaboo is shoes. I love sandals, and have about 30 pairs, plus about 10 pairs of flip-flops. Hey, a girl has to have a vice, right?

Hey girls! I used Polyvore to put together a couple of example capsule wardrobes for summer, winter, and in general. Each is 12 items. I'm just about to try doing another couple for spring and autumn, but my challenge will be to keep all of it to within 30 items. Here's the link to my profile with my stuff on it! www.polyvore.com/summer_love/set?id=

I just did a very needed 'closet purge' after getting a whole bunch of very nice tops quite inexpensively at our big city-wide Goodwill Store-- realized my new ones (size 'small'!!!) were all nicely *fitted* and much more becoming than my older typically 'box-y' blouses and tops. SO... before even hanging up the new blouses in my closet, I made myself pull out all the 'oldies' that I never wore, because I didn't think they looked good on me-- even if I liked the fabric. I could also see that many were VERY dated looking. I was happy I got *rid* of more than I was bringing in-- so my closet rod has some 'give' to it that wasn't there before ;-). No more 'guilt' at not wearing these old duds ;-)... they are gone!

Another plus-- I got my first-ever 'senior discount' at Goodwill ;-) (I'm just about to turn 60... their discount actually starts for 55 year olds, but I never knew!).

I keep myself within limits on shoes because I have a shoe organizer that holds 10 pairs. I can't exceed that. I keep a couple of pairs of boots elsewhere, but if I exceed 10 on shoes, something has to go.

Since I'm changing sizes, I needed some inspiration to actually go through all of my items and see what fits/goes with other items.

Seeing your list gave me a boost! Thanks!

If you have shoes you have never worn why don't you try a consignment sale/shop, or selling the at a yard sale, craiglist, etc. Then you can get some of the money back even

Thanks for the lovely comment :-) I'm sure you'll get there someday. I find it's easiest to go through in a few different occasions; first I got rid of all the "what the heck possessed me?" Clothes. Then another day, I got rid of the ones that didn't fit. Finally, the ones that didn't really suit me, and those that I liked, but knew I just would wear. This way it's not a complete purge, and becomes a much less daunting task.

A new level of frugality by the way; I plan to make these clothes myself. Yes, from scratch! I spin, sew, weave, knit and crochet so I've decided that with the exception of 10% of the wardrobe (mostly underwear and shoes) I'm going to be making it all myself, or at least altering something I already have (such as dying my currently cranberry red dress to claret).

I have been procrastinating. I need to organize my closet as I have skinny, not so skinny, big, bigger and huge clothes. I exaggerate slightly. I have to weed out the I-don't-wear, the doesn't-fit and the where-did-you-come-from. Then and only then can I start to coordinate my wardrobe. I envy you your emoticon plan.

11 Pink heels
12 Claret heels
13 Turquoise flip flops

Thems my shoes! I'm a strange girl; I have one pair I wear all the time, day in and day out (the sage boots; they go with green, blue and brown, even pink!), then I have the pink and claret heels for romantic and sultry evenings out, the flip flops for summer parties, and the pewter sandals and charcoal boots of work functions year around. I have yet to meet a woman who has "a pair of shoes for every outfit" and yet manages to limit herself to a half dozen pairs, lol!

I have seen plans like this in magazines, but I think you have pulled this off even better.

I am packing for a week long trip. I am going to be taking a lot of things that go with beige. I have been trying to get more color in my wardrobe and yet keep things mix and match.

You didn't mention shoes. I try to make sure that I don't have to buy shoes just to go with a new pair of slacks.

Sounds like you are doing a great job in creating a flexible and workable wardrobe. I am working on doing this, but taking things one step at a time. I have been sorting through clothes I will no longer wear and been giving them away or tossing them. I have a number of pieces that work together, and for now am not buying new clothes so am making do with the things I have.

Anyone else skimming down their clothes?

I'm planning to go for a 30-item closet, with a 30-item accessory drawer. Might sound a little excessive on the accessories, but I find it's better to have a glut of those than clothes, you know?

1 Chocolate cami/tank
2 Claret cami/tank
3 Spruce cami/tank
4 Sappire cami/tank
5 Cocoa top
6 Sage top
7 Pewter top
8 Turquoise top
9 Pink top
10 Chocolate sweater
11 Pewter waterfall cardigan
12 Pink sweater/cardigan
13 Sage super-jumperdress
14 Cocoa waterfall cardigan
15 Chocolate pants
16 Charcoal pants
17 Sappire pants
18 Jeans
19 Sapphire skirt
20 Pink skirt
21 Claret dress (date dress)
22 Casual pink dress
23 Casual turquoise dress
24 Casual spruce dress
25 Pewter and charcoal belted shift
26 Leggings
27 Sage light jacket
28 Claret winter coat
29 Charcoal winter coat
30 Charcoal jacket

From this, I can mix and match to my hearts content, but have several actual "outfits" for various uses;

Pewter and charcoal dress for business things in the summer, and the charcoal pants and jacket with the pewter top for the rest of it. Jacket can be replaced with the pewter cardigan for a softer still-formal look, and the charcoal winter coat can be used when it's cold.

The cocoa top can be worn with jeans or chocolate pants for a casual look. Can be layered with the chocolate cami and/or chocolate sweater or cocoa cardigan as desired in cooler weather.

Cute and girly casual or date wear can be created with the pink top and jeans or pink skirt, with or without the claret cami. The pink sweater/cardigan can be used with the outfit, or with the pink dress for the same look.

The sultry "date night" dress is the claret wrap dress, my version of an LBD. Can be worn with the claret winter coat if necessary.

The spruce tank and sage jacket look cute together with jeans, or the sage super-jumper can be worn over it instead. Also looks good with a lot of the brown and pink stuff; probably some of the most versitile items in my wardrobe. The spruce dress and jumper-dress can also be worn together. This is a very natural, comfortable look.

The turquoise top is fun, and can be worn with jeans, the sapphire pants, or the sapphire skirt, and with or without the sapphire tank underneath it. The dress is equally cute and fun; both are good outfits for parties and such. The top and skirt with leggings also forms the basis for my main dance outfit for workouts.

From here, I can identify the accessories I'll need;

1 A charcoal and/or pewter clutch bag.
2 A charcoal and/or pewter handbag.
3 A casual chocolate handbag.
4 A cute little girly girl purse.
5 A claret evening bag.
6 A spruce and/or sage messanger bag.
7 A fun and funky sort of turquoise bag.
8 Work-friendly pewter sandals
9 Work-friendly charcoal boots
10 Sage boots
11 Pink heels
12 Claret heels
13 Turquoise flip flops
14 Chocolate scarf or shawl
15 Pink scarf or shawl
16 Charcoal scarf or shawl
17 Sapphire scarf or shawl
18 Sage scarf or shawl
19 Beige and chocolate summer hat
20 Turquoise summer hat
21 Spruce belt
22 Charcoal belt
23 Chocolate belt
24 Claret belt
25 Sapphire belt
26 Pearl earrings
27 Claret earrings
28 Charcoal earrings
29 Turquiose and sapphire earrings
30 Green earrings

That's my starting list; once I get to that, I'm planning to whittle down further.

What about you?

Just because you have been through the rain of life doesn't mean I have to walk around in wet clothes forever; there is a warm towel, a big hug, and a mug of low fat cocoa waiting for you somewhere!
