Boy FROSTY, you did have a busy day! A small amount of our snow melted. I had wished it would've melted off of our steep driveway, but no luck yet. Maybe tomorrow.

Felt like I the hamster in the wheel today. Had to be up early to get ready, eat breakfast and have Dad to the lab for his bloodwork before 7. Hubby went along to lift the wheelchair in and out of the car and take him in for me. After we got him back home and settled back in I had to get everyone together to take the food and money to the food bank. They were very happy with the donations-355 lbs of food and $950.
When I got home, I gathered a couple of my volunteers and we worked in the park flowerbeds for over 2 hours and got them mostly cleaned out. Think another couple of hours will get the job done. I certainly hope so as it got pretty warm this morning and I think I had a slight case of heat exhaustion as I felt pretty weak and yukky when I got home a little after noon. Ended up taking a 90 min nap and woke up feeling a lot better after that.
We are supposed to have a cold front come down and maybe give us some much needed rain (wish we could take some of that excess from up north) and our temps are to go back down into the mid 70's instead of upper 80's.

emoticon Good Morning Team. It is Green Tea Time.

emoticon Kurt sent a message that he is having internet connection problems. He may not be on line much until this changes.

SIRIRADHA emoticon We are glad your minutes are counting. I didn't know you could get your totals that way. Do you suppose the team is haunted.

FROSTY99 emoticon Sounds like a fun event.

MEGANROYAL1 - hope you are staying dry. I was surprised to see most of the snow melted this morning. We have one big puddle that is a good distance from the house, plus a damp area that is too close for comfort next to our kitchen. Some county roads are expected to have flooding problems along low areas and streams. We will just stay on the "HIGH"ways.

KRAZYWOLF - Sounds almost like whiplash. I bet yoga is a great help. emoticon on the weight loss.

Gail - Perhaps your ideas for local dishes should be in a thread on our Simple Menus & Cooking; Simply Housekeeping Forum. I have not had much time online lately & neglected that forum. I will start a thread on it. I bet Teri would enjoy it too.

I have had back problems for a month now that seem to be getting worse. I am going to call my chiropractor in a minute. It is keeping me from doing my cardio. Guess I need to do yoga with KRAZYWOLF.

Last Day of February. Oh My. Where did the month go?????????

KRAZY- I'm with you on the lack of exercise, at least from last week. I've been helping my husband with an overtime project for work that he's doing from home, so one hour every night last week was taking the place of my hourly workout. I was so frustrated, but I know he's getting paid extra for it, so I was trying to be a good sport and help him out to make it go faster.

I chatted with him on the weekend, while we were still working, and told him that I had to get back to the exercise, so he would be a little more on his own at this point. He didn't mind, partly because he's just about done with the parts I could help with anyway. But I do feel better getting back to the exercise:)

Good Afternoon:

I made a discovery and would like to share it with those of you who like eggplant. I found that if I peel the eggplant, slice it, and then steam it in the microwave until it is tender. There are no added calories and it is great. (I use a 1970's harvest gold tupperware microwave steamer with a bit of water in the lower level; the eggplant on the insert doesn't touch the water.) If anyone wants some tips on how to prepare some healthy, delicious local dishes, let me know and I'll share with you. Today I put the eggplant on pizza. Yum.

Gail

Enjoy each day.

Slower day today-got in my walk this morning and trimmed Abbie since I can get her into the groomer till the end of Mar. Even got Dad all cleaned up so he is ready to go to get his blood drawn early tomorrow morning and this afternoon I have taken time to sit and read the paper and now I am online before dark! Still have to get dinner but enjoying a bit of a break today.
Got pics from a friend up near Buffalo on the Canadian side showing me all their snow and it sure made me shiver-we are about 84 this afternoon-warmer than usual, but I am not complaining.!

Why is it that every week something seems to happen to try to derail my exercise? Even tho it might slow me down, I won't let it stop me! Press on! Last night was the first time, in a long time, I tried to play a game with small kids that involved running and boom got tripped by a little girl. Now my whole left side is aching along with my neck but oh well, must go on! My yoga stretching is helping emmensly.
This week I lost 2 pounds
This month I lost waiste- 3", thigh- 1 3/4, neck- 1/4, upper arm- .5

It does feel good helping others:) And Linda, we have the possible flooding coming here in WI, too. I live up on a higher elevation in my neighborhood, but we're always getting the water from the house behind us. Luckily, we don't have a basement, but we'll see how we fare.

What a rewarding day here. It was our annual tea party which supports 2 wonderful groups, our local food bank and our soldiers. They are both staffed totally by volunteers and 100% goes to helping those less fortunate. My van is loaded with food to take to the food bank on Mon and another huge SUV was loaded with things to go to our troops. In addition about $1900 was earned by ticket sales, silent auction and donations and was divided between the two. I am still excited tonite that a small group like ours did so good. This will sure help keep the food bank going for another week and this will help send more goodie bags to the troops. Their biggest expense is the postage so the money will help with that. These volunteers send out approximately 1,000 bags each month.
I am very excited tonite knowing that this day will help so many people and we had fun doing it-there was a fashion show, a silent auction to help raise the money, lots of nice door prizes, and of course, food. All donated so everything made went to support this effort.
Even though she will never read this, thank you Nancy for your hard work-I know you stayed up all nite to finish things up. You deserve a big round of applause for doing this every year.

Have you considered consulting with an exterminator. It might be cheaper than delivery.

My weather is still very winter. We haven't had the ice in recent days. It is suppose to warm up by Monday with a risk for floods. I may go see my mother today instead of Monday for that reason. Some of the roads on the way could be water covered. I hope water doesn't sit in our yard or get into our crawl space. Our river should be find as it has dams protecting it. But smaller streams can be a problem.

I pulled up the thread about gas prices. As I noted there - walking might be encouraged because of the awful price of gas. It is expected to continue to rise.

Good Morning Everyone,

I'm excited this morning because I did my weekly weigh in and my ticker moved down, oh yeah! I've got to admit, though. Due to our ant issue, we had a lot of food delivered and fast food and I was only able to cook once this week. Plus, no exercise due to migraines and helping my hubby with overtime data entry type work this week at home. So, I'm really shocked! But I'll take the loss and aim to do better next week. Have a great day all!

Good Morning:

We never got out yesterday .... even to get the mail. Vic said it was sooo bad there was no traction on the walk. It was a sheet of ice. We are hoping it will melt today.

Hope things are better where you live.

Hello Everyone,
Thank you all so much! It still seems strange to not have any parents now. My Dad died in 1975 at 44 of a rare blood disorder. Mom was 75 but never took care of herself or her diabetes but she fell and broke her hip thinking she was chasing the boys which is my 3 older brothers.and she just coudln't survive that. I am doing something fun this weekend. I am working full time now at Office Max and we are having a Black and White party with dancing and comedians so it should be fun. I am doing that Sat. night. Tonight there is a singer at the Theater in town that i might go see. The Glen Miller band is coming next month! Trying to get back on track eating. I have been off track since before Thanksgiving with Mom just going back and forth between getting worse and getting better. So maybe now I can get on track and I plan to join the YMCA again and swim. Hope everyone has a great weekend. Darla

Darla, so sorry for your recent loss.

I have a really busy ten days and haven't been on line much.
Things should quiet down now.
We had 6" or more forecast for last night. It is really hard to tell what actually fell, because there was a lot of blowing snow. DH just finished clearing the driveway with our blower. It has really gotten a workout this year.

My back and joints are bothering me with all the weather changes. So, I am going to get in our hot tub to loosen up.

Everybody have a great weekend.

Darla - I'm so sorry to hear about your mom.

Seems like we've been crazy-busy lately. We finally got rid of the ugly bushes in front of our house that I've hated since we moved in. Now I have to get rid of the lava rocks that the previous owners put in the flower bed. I think I'm going to focus on the garden this weekend. A coworker gave me a couple of tomato plants so I want to get them into the ground before they die.

Enjoy your Friday everyone!

Darla so sorry to hear about your mother. May you enjoy many blessings from all the years you had her. I still miss my mom and she has been gone since 1968!
Had another full day here-hubby had to go for more bloodwork and we attempted to do 2 sets of labs at once but he isn't sure they got it right so here is hoping they did. Tried to run some errands after that but it was not successful-wanted to pick up a retractable screen door so we can get some air in our kitchen without the bugs but they didn't have what I was looking for so had to resort to getting a friend who works at Home Depot to pick one up at the store he works at. Then when I went to the bank to get cash, the computers were giving them fits so took a long time to do that.
My poor dad was sitting in our driveway waiting for us to get home as I had told him I would do his shower at 11 but didn't get home till 11:30!!! I got him taken care of and he said he enjoyed sitting out in the sunshine.
I worked in my flower garden this afternoon but it is going to take me several days to get it all cleaned up.
Hubby actually got up early and he and Abbie walked with me before we went to get his blood drawn. I was shocked when he got up to walk-that is 2 days now. Hoping he will get into it more. His glucose level is inching up and I think he is afraid it will be one more health issue so hoping this keeps it in check.

Darla, I'm sorry to hear of your mom's passing.

Hi Everyone, I've been MIA for a few days as work has been quite busy. Plus, I am helping my hubby with a work project on overtime at home as well. I did read the posts below and I will check out the copy cat recipes.

We are still fighting off the swarms of ants. The newest issue is that we cannot pull out the stove as it is wedged in and we think the nest is back there. It's a gas stove and now I'm not sure if we can drop anything down behind it without causing an explosion. Still looking into this.

Hello Everyone,
Sorry I have not been on here. My Mom passed away Feb 6th on Sunday morning. We had the funeral and graveside service that Friday. She is buried in Laverne OK where we all grew up. We moved there in 1967 when I was 3 years old! Her and my Dad both are buried there. My step dad spent $120 on a gorgeous plant that my brother brought me along with some of her things. I have 3 older brothers and the middle one went to her house and got all the pictures and has scanned them and sent them to us. I am so glad she saved all those pictures even if some of them are embarassing! lol I already miss her and miss talking to her. My son's wedding is in 3 weeks and my 3 year old granddaughter will be the flower girl so that should be funny! Not sure if she will really let go of the flowers! lol Thanks so much to all of you for being so supportive to me in this time. I will try to post more often now. Darla

Good Afternoon:

I spent the morning volunteering at our local community radio station's winter pledge drive.
As a resident of Madison, WI, I'm where all the action is right now. On the various programs they were discussing the events at the state capitol where the protests continue with as much or more vigor and determination as they did on the very first day. I am so bummed out by the proposed legislation and by the national media coverage which is reporting only a bit of what is happening and what the bill entails.

Learned how to use a chainsaw, was very cautious; kicked my toosh, but did yoga stretches afterward to ward off any pain or stiffness and woke up feeling a little stiffness in right leg, but stretched it out. Feeling energized! Was able to bypass Pizza last night (major weakness: "Can't eat just one") at Bible Study

Yes, I will pray for COPPERPENNY--I think she was having cataract surgery, but I'm not sure.

Today was a school day for me and I had to take a makeup quiz because I missed it last week due to a funeral. It's not easy to catch up--especially in Spanish! LOL I think I did okay, though~ Now I have the weekend to do the work I missed.

I'll probably be helping a granddaughter with her 4H project too.

Evening-another long and full day but got a lot accomplished-another flower bed cleaned out and a huge trash bag of stuff I cleaned out or trimmed off taken away. Hubby, Abbie and I walked about 3 miles this monring before I got busy on the flowers. I made a bunch of phone calls to straighten out a mess with hubby's meds. Had given them our credit card to charge but then they sent a bill and I didn't want to pay for it twice-hardly can pay for it once!!! Supposedly when I got done, it was going on the cc but then not 10 min later I got a phone call from their computer saying they would not release his meds till the older stuff was paid for soooo I had to call back to make sure things were straight. Oh the joys of dealing with insurance. After dinner tonites, friends came over and we played a domino game, chicken foot for a couple of hours.
I am sorry so many of you are dealing with lousy weather-it has been beautiful down south and we are soaking it up. Only downfall, our pool is down-shut down by health dept and needs repairs and will likely take up to 2 mo sooo no swimming for awhile.

Afternoon,

Hubby & I just got back from our trip. So, much has been going on. On the trip we found out that my Hubby's Aunt passed away. Then we got home and I found out that my very close friend lost her battle with cancer and another found out she has cancer. So far it hasn't been good. Trying to stay positive and active and happy. It's not easy.

Snowing here today and it is 27 degrees but, feels like 22.

Hope that everyone has a good week.

@Krazywolf -

Congratulations! Isn't it great?

I made the exact same discovery yesterday!
I was able to shovel for a full hour without stopping.
Keep on going and more power to you!

emoticon I don't have much time today because we are emoticon driving my oldest back to INDY today to catch a flight to Denver. We have had her with us for a full week. It has been a great visit.

Speaking of driving. Thankfully, I filled the car with gas on Monday at $3.039/gallon.
Tuesday, the price went up to $3.369.

Megan,
I saw somebody on Food Network that was teaching healthy menus say - learn at least 3 Go-To meals by heart. Even if you just keep rotating through them. I have at least two that I make with the frozen chicken tenders [no breading or seasoning] One is an Asian stir fry. Another is more like the salsa chicken recipe for the crockpot, but I can do it in my wok. I then can make tacos out of them. The frozen chicken pieces can be rinsed under cold water to start the thawing. But they are small enough that they cook through quickly from the frozen state. I also use my countertop grill a lot.

I hear a lot of you saying they need to get back on track.
I rode my bike for 35" yesterday. If I stay on doing that, I will be on track.

Terri,
Sounds like you are having fun with your DGD.

KRAZYWOLF emoticon Great Progress! emoticon

Gail,
My freezer was packed with bread that my DD bought. I don't know why she bought so much and she is leaving today. I had intended the lasagna to be given away. I gave it to some shut-ins or house holds that are living on food stamps.

emoticon Got to go get cleaned up for my day on the road.

Good Morning:

What a bummer. I was trying to start over with my food yesterday and did so well until dinner. WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH ME? AM I NUTS?

I'll try once more today...tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow...will this never end?

Kurt: Yes, I've done that too. The one for Claussens pickles was quite good, though I did tweek it a bit. Last summer my dining room smelled like a pickle factory. LOL BTW, if anyone needs white sauce, especially one that calls for cream, you can get the same consistency and a very good taste using skim milk and cornstarch. You can even use a bit of real butter (but not margarine) without adding many calories. I do it all the time.

Once you get more experience cooking at home, and you find a number of recipes you like (and aren't that time consuming), the food will taste much better than what you can order from outside.
I've found that if I make a dish at home, I don't gain weight, but if I eat the same dish outside, I do.
If you like a particular dish from a chain restaurant, search for "copycat recipe" and the name of the dish.

Good Morning Everyone,
I've been a little off track as well. I was supposed to have a workout last night, but skipped it to do taxes. I did a little shoveling, though. The hubby and I need to stop eating out and getting food delivered. It of course tastes so much better than what we make at home, but we need to buckle down and do it. One day at a time.....

Evening all, think tomorrow will get me back on track. Been hard to get it all in the past few days and I feel like I am running on empty, but plan to get up and walk early (my normal routine) and then get into the rest of my chores for the day.
Our company finally got away about 10 am-they had said they wanted an early start which to us it about 6 am! Oh well, different strokes for different folks. We had a 1 pm lunch date with more friends from up north who are also heading back north this weekend-saying goodbye to the snowbirds.
I have to concentrate on me now as I have to go for bloodwork next week and dr the following week. Still hard to put myself 1st.

I got a call from one of the dgdaughters yesterday to ask if she could come after school and work on a 4H project for Textile Day. She came last night and we chose a project and the pattern. Today, she'll come again and we'll choose some fabric out of my huge stash, and get started. She already has her eye on the next project if we finish this one quickly--that's my girl!

I've got to get some more chores done before she gets here!

Made an awesome discovery today! I did 2 miles with a steep incline in 37 min power walking yesterday and did 1.28 in 30 min casual walking today which I wasn't able to do before. Not only does exercise make you fit, it causes your body to naturally perform better without trying!

Good Morning All!

NEWMEPA - We don't have a Target and no real competition for the local Walmart - except the groceries. I tried something similar here, but they were not as customer oriented. In fact, most of their groceries are more expensive than any of the the 3 other local grocery stores. I only buy food there if I am in a time crunch.

It doesn't look like I sparked much yesterday. Only earned 44 points. I didn't get any exercise in. My oldest DD and I spent much of the day prepping food for the Teen-MOPS. I started sleeting about 2 p.m. Then snow. We took the Lasagna to the church and put in the oven at 3p.m. We also made them a big salad with carrots. the snow continued. We had about 3 inches on the ground by 5 p.m. - which was on top of the sleet. So the adult leaders of MOPS had notified the outlying communities not to transport the young women into town.

They called me about 7p.m. to say that half the food was left over, even after sending food with the teens. Only about 25% of the girls came because of the weather. I am going to contact a family that has major financial issues to pick it up. I may take some to another family first. [I thought we were making too much.] We had made ourselves a small casserole of the Lasagna. We really don't need any more.

Today, I am not planning to leave the house until later because of the weather. I want to make suer the city streets have been treated. Tomorrow we will be taking DD to the airport. After that, things will get more back to normal around here.

NEW METHOD TO GET FREEBIES:

The site is called HouseParty.com [House Party™], and they find "hosts" for thousands of parties across the country. Each event is sponsored by a leading brand and focuses on something that the sponsor wants consumers to experience firsthand and share with their friends.
If selected to be a host, you'll get a box of freebies for yourself and freebie favors for the guests at your party.
The freebies you get will vary depending on which party you host but may include full sized products, free samples, coupons, and party decorations.

There are different categories, and one of the recent parties is from GreenWorks, so it's not all the usual brand names.

I've never signed up for this one, so let me know what happens (if anything).

I have been dying to share this with someone. I was at Target and I bought several jars of my iced tea. After I was rung up I realized they were much more expensive then I realized. I went back to check the shelf and see what the price was. They had been in the wrong place and they were on the bottom shelf so I didn't notice.

I took them to the service desk to return them. After I explained what happened she charged me the price I thought they were. This is a good thing to know in the future.

Good Afternoon

My friend, Celeste, loathes mayor Bloomberg. As a former teacher, she says he's doing awful things to the school system. Celeste is so glad she retired about a year or two ago.

Speaking of Celeste, she's doing great, but is a bit anxious because she needs to go for a PET scan this coming week to see if the cancer meds are helping. BTW, did I tell you she falls in the doughnut hole and is currently shelling out $1100 / month for meds? I cannot begin to imagine. That is in addition to all the other new expenses she now has.

My dil called this morning to tell us her sister had a baby this weekend. I have been planning to knit a layette....not sure what just yet.... and was fortunate to get quite a bit of peach yarn from a friend. Lucky for me the baby is a girl, so I'll be able to make an entire ensemble or a blanket. Another friend gave me a book with baby patterns so I'm all set.

Take care, be well, and enjoy the day.

Gail

We have no "dog problem" here. And the difference between $8.50 (for spayed/neutered) and $38 (for not) is not justifiable, at all.
Our current mayor has a corporate background and uses any "politically-correct" situation to make money.
There are dollars and dollars of taxes on items like alcohol, cigarettes (I think they're $15 a pack now with the taxes added), and other things, to discourage people from buying them, but people just get them from elsewhere.
Last year, they were still trying to push through a tax on soda and other items because the majority of people are overweight (supposedly to discourage sales of soda and unhealthy things).
He also tends to do things like his recent hire of a woman with a corporate background in publishing (no politics or Master's degree) to run the City school system.
I'm very apolitical, but I definitely have an opinion on this subject -- He's not popular with me.

Good Morning Everyone,

FROSTY-It's funny you mention cats on leashes. My cat Bella will walk right down the sidewalk with me on a leash. Eventually, she flops down and rolls around. But for the most part, she will walk quite a ways with me emoticon .

I'm waiting to see what the weather is going to do today before going grocery shopping. The weather people here have changed their minds about three times yesterday during the course of the day as to what was going to occur today. So I figured I would just see for myself today.

Our tax appt did not go well at all yesterday. Long story very short, our refinancing company lied and said we didn't have any points on the loan, but we had one so that messed us up. And also, the unemployment my hubby had with no tax taken out. I have never had it this bad, paying so much at tax time, but we'll get through it.

I hope you all have a great Sunday!

emoticon Good Morning. There is a full moon - Sun won't rise for a couple of hours.

Taxes. We took ours to our accountant a week ago. Expecting to get a lot back because we private pay health insurance. Wow - Kurt. That is a lot of tax on a dog. Are there a lot of stray puppies or something? I wouldn't think there would be in NYC. Locally, they have to euthanize a lot of cats. A good reason to push for spay/neutering. Dogs - I don't think there is as much of a problem. We have leash laws for both. People comply with dogs. But, have you ever seen a cat on a leash?

Frosty, I am at least going to mix up a batch of cookies. I am cooking for "Teen-MOPS" tomorrow. I am making them Lasagna, garlic toast, and cookies. Probably will make them a fruit salad as well. This is an organization for young mothers age 18 & under. Some haven't had their babies yet. As I understand it, it is the only really good meal they get. Most are on Medicaid. It is an organization that teaches them parenting skills & provides emotional support.

Happy Saturday all-I had the honor of going to Wally World today to pick up meds for Dad. What a treat, but I got there early-pharmacy opens at 9 so I was there before that and there was already a line! I decided to do the rest of my shopping and come back and by doing that I only had 1 person in front of me!
I spent part of the day baking-cookies to give to 2 friends for their birthday-both are husbands of good friends of mine so thought this would work for a gift for them. I also cleaned house as expect company Mon and bathed Abbie and by the time all that was done,, it was time to think about dinner. Trying to be ready for company when I don't know what time hubby will get done with the stress test is giving me stress!
Have a wonderful Sunday.
