. . . and those who have no insurance can be hospitalized free for ten days for the same condition that I would be hospitalized for 3 days with high quality insurance. . . .
You are right. We probably shouldn't get started on this.

Yeah, don't get me started on that.... my BF and I own rental properties that we rent to tenants with Section 8 vouchers... they live far, far better than we do.

I wish you could live here then. I'm on maternity leave for a year, paid by the government ( do you have similar things there ?) and my husband is going to university full time and we don't pay a cent for health care. Never have.

I wish we had single payer health care here and that it wasn't tied to a job. My boyfriend and I have our own business, but I still work full time for the health insurance. I would quit my job in a heartbeat if it weren't for the health insurance.

Oh boy am I ever glad to live in Canada where I don't have to worry about health insurance coverage, etc. As far as I can tell up here everyone receives the same quality of care, though you can sometimes pay extra for a specific service like an MRI so you don't have to wait as long in a queue, which makes perfect sense to me (paying for an early MRI saved my aunt's life).

Getting a doctor with field experience in Afghanistan would be unusual any where.

We don't all get the same care. I watched a press conference this morning. A doctor said that Congresswoman Giffords' husband is an astronaut and in the military. The military sent their top doctors, who are experienced in gunshots to the head, to help her. The the military doctors spoke. They praised the hospital doctors for their good work.

I have to say that when my grandson was injured in a motorcycle accident, he was medivacced to a hospital in St. Louis since the local hospital wasn't equipped to handle a trauma of this magnitude and he got excellent care even though he had no insurance and they helped him get qualified for medicaid-after the fact. He had a head trauma-no helmet!-and 2nd degree burns requiring skin grafts. He is still not himself and receiving outpatient help but probably not as much as he really needs but now they are limiting his care but glad they got him thru the worst of it.

I want to add.
I think we all get the same care in an emergency.
Not so sure when it reaches the point when there is time to consider multiple options and how much it costs.
Especially in regards to the elderly.
And, of course the skills of health care providers will vary from place to place, day to day, and shift to shift.

I believe we all get the same care. It's possible that the ER surgeons didn't even know who they were working on.

I agree with you Linda AND I agree that the media are filling the airways with news that may not be news and may not be presenting an entirely well-rounded, researched perspective.

Do we all get the same medical care? I think we have the opportunity to get the same care, but the quality of medical facilities can fluctuate. I believe anyone in the medical field has that desire to do everything in their power to bring healing to any patient. However, I believe we need to look to the family members to be involved, ask questions, research what is best for their loved one, and ask more questions.

We learned this years ago from a friend of ours who is in the medical field: any patient needs an advocate, someone in the family who makes it clear that the doctors must communicate what is going on with their loved one, and someone who is present to SEE what the different medical personnel are doing for their loved one. When the family leaves all that level of responsibility to the medical professionals, I don't believe that is fair to the patient or to the medical staff. Care begins with the family unit.

Sixty - you are right. Basically, if you have money and well know you will receive better care than if you are one that doesn't. I have seen it working in the Medical field. The old you get the more expensive it becomes. I know more older people that can barely pay for there meds.
Sorry, on my soap box. But, as far as the what happen I feel that if it were anyone else no they would not have received the same care.

No matter what the media source we have to be aware that it is one sources opinion - or one persons opinion, but in the eyes of the fantastic medical personnel available in most areas, they treat the injury - not the person. I am sure we would all receive the BEST CARE that is available at that time, in that space. I wish the victims of the terrible Arizona massacre well and speedy recovery.

I realize that we are a world-wide community.
My question does not have to do with health insurance.
If you aren't familiar with the recent tragedy in Arizona:
www.sparkpeople.com/resource/health_news_d
etail.asp?health_day=648715

My husband saw an interview on Fox News in which some expert said that the average person would not of received the care that Congresswoman Giffords received. That it was unusual for the surgery and that in most cases the family would be told nothing could be done.

I did not see the interview. But I totally disagree with the spokesperson. I am a retired nurse with experience in Critical Care and Emergency nursing. I have limited experience with gunshot wounds, but I do have experience with head trauma.

My opinion is that the same thing would be done for anybody. The problem is that not all communities have the ability to provide the care Ms. Giffords received. I believe that if this happened to anybody in my town, they would have been flown by air-ambulance to a regional trauma center. As long as the person had evidence of brain activity and was not viewed as "brain dead" - everything possible would be done. A not-for-profit hospital would be chosen, of course, but more than half of the hospitals in my area would be so classified. I am basing my opinion on experience with head traumas that have occurred in the past in my community. Care was provided even when we couldn't identify the victim.
