I'm actually "upsizing" from where I am now, because I'm sharing a house with someone. But I'm leaving South Florida to get back to a less expensive place to live. Not leaving the state, but it's such a big state, moving from one end of the state to another is like leaving the state. Honestly, North FL is nothing like South FL.

I don't have a house anymore, so no worry about taxes. I just need to be somewhere that the rent is cheaper and utilities are low. The city I'm moving to has a great community garden program (the city plots are free) and wonderful farmer's market that is very cheap. They have a utility co-op with very low rates. Wonderful public transportation system (bus) and bike lanes all over town. Since I don't own a car anymore, that's very important.

Not near a beach like down here, but I never go to the beach anyway, and they have awesome biking/hiking trails and two great nature preserves in the area. Lots of free entertainment in the summer, and cheap seats at the local stage theater.

I am stuck here for longer than I want to be, but I'm going to be back there by February for sure.

Heading to Healthy One Day at a Time!

I'd like to move just for the adventure of it. Missouri sounds nice. Anyone live in Texas?

Yes, you can!

Thought this old thread might be worth reviving for awhile.

We visited when our son first moved to Fulton, MO in 2009. While I was here, I realized that (with my 62nd BD coming up), I was working full-time for nothing but housing costs in Orange County, CA. Retired here 3 months later, reducing our housing costs by 75%! Way lower taxes
And everyone knows that I saved a chunk on gas too

What I didn't expect - and love - is way lower medical costs too. Catastrophic medical only, also got a pharmacy drug card. Have spent less here without insurance than we spent on deductibles with company medical.

We've never regretted it.

It's funny you should say this about Tennessee. Hubby and I are thinking of moving there -- our daughter is in college and will stay here in MA. We really have very frugal needs now that she's grown. LOL

We are thinking TN or KY.

Well, I live in Tennessee...no income tax, but relatively high sales taxes. Housing is comparatively cheap, license plates ridiculously low, and generally the cost of living is low. I wouldn't want to move in without a job in hand, but it really is a wonderful state.

HOWEVER...if you have kids, don't do it unless you look very carefully at the school systems. Education is NOT valued, and K-12 ed is massively underfunded.

Avoid Connecticut! We have the 2nd highest cost-per-capita in the country, aging infrastructures, and sky-high taxes. Plus either 2 feet of snow or scorching heat, no jobs, and polluted air.

When you find such a place, let us know. We'll all move there with you. DO NOT COME TO MASSACHUSETTS! It sux here big time and the governor just added $.19 gasoline tax, like we weren't already the #2 state in taxes. Now, we're #1. Sigh.

Has anyone moved to a different city, county or state to save money?

I am wondering because i am thinking about it. I live in Wisconsin and we are taxed heavily to the point were the jobs are also moving out of state and people who want state benefits without working are moving in. We have a government that is skimming money off the top for pet projects so the services are not as good as they used to be (schools, roads). My hubby and i are thinking about moving to another state that has a growing economy and less taxes.
