Hey everyone..I'm back and here to stay! I had nearly forgotten I joined THIS belly dancing team.lol..
I'm ready for some real butt-kicking ladies!
I want to learn BD so I could dance at my wedding and surprise my darling future hubby. Any ideas where I could start off?

Greetings Fellow Belly Shakers! I'm Jazz. I just joined this month - I'm a newbie & this site is an awesome weapon to have in your arsenal. I used to Belly dance 3-4yrs ago & I'm trying to get back in the swing of things. I love variety in my workouts so if anyone has suggestions for workout DVDs I'm all ears. I'm also looking for some BD music for meditation, warm-ups & dances too! Looking forward to chatting with you!

Hi,

I've been losing weight on my own but just discovered Spark People last week...what fun!

I've been taking Tribal lessons for about 4 months now and I'm hooked! My hips are finally starting to listen to my brain lol. I only have class once a week but practice several times a week. I'm also a big fan of Cathe Friedrich workouts. The combination of belly dancing, weight training and regular cardio workouts has helped me lose 53 pounds so far. I still have about 30-35 pounds to lose but I finally feel like I can do it!

Welcome to the harem!

Our best suggestion is to always find classes. If that's not possible for location or financial reasons, there are great lessons available at Expert Village online and on YouTube. There are also some really good DVDs available.

Hello,
My name is Carole and I've been with SP for about 2 months now. I have never belly danced before, but think that it would be fun to do. I love dancing and having been dancing for several years, nothing serious or professional, but it is something that I do enjoy doing.

Any tips for a newbie who has never belly danced before?

Looking forward to getting to learn bellydance and getting to know you.

Well, I'm always looking for different classes to take! Texas is kind of out of the way for me, though :) I can't believe that it took me so long to figure out that belly dancers might be spark people- I'm usually not THAT slow, lol. Thanks for the welcome- the harem looks like a fun place to hang out.

Hi all! I've been on SP for about a year and just figured out that I should look up a belly dance spark team. I've been dancing for about a year, taking lessons from a local dancer (San Diego area). She's an excellent instructor (Egyptian style) but I'm also going to try American Tribal tonight! I'm excited- good luck to all. Reading everyone's stories are so interesting and helpful!

Hey everyone! I've always loved watching belly dancing, and lately things just seems to be appearing everyone to push me into trying it for myself. I'm bowing to the inevitable and starting my very first class this month through the university extension here in Lafayette. Wish me luck!!

It's amazing how this dance is wonderful in so many ways!
Don't forget how it makes you feel inside, too: joyful, sexy, graceful, empowered, strong, beautiful, capable, athletic, and sometimes like a clumsy bumpkin, too *grin*

Hello. New to this group, been on SP fro about 2 weeks now. Back when i was young and thin i used to go to the clubs just so i could dance. Now almost 18 years later and several lbs heavier i have decided that the one exercise i could do was to dance. Some years back (5?) my husband showed me a tape of belly dancing, Arabic i believe. Ever since then i have had a fascination with it. So now that i have begun a new journey for a healthier life and some weightloss i decided to give belly dancing a go. I bought a 3 DVD set by Neena and Veena (basics, beyond basics $ mystic) I have had them almost 2 weeks. The first time i tried the basic one i couldn't believe how much fun it was and that i could actually do the moves and finish the entire thing. And i like that i can turn off the narration and just enjoy the music and moves. I am by no means graceful YET but one day after much practice i intend to be. And i'll tell you this does not make my hips, back and knees hurt like some impact exercises do.

I keep reading that a small snack after exercise is good. I like bananas, mangos, or toasted cinnamon swirl bread.

Sorry you're not feeling well - blech! Flu is no fun. Take care of yourself.

As for the "after exercise munchies" - the top advice would be a glass of water. Second up would be to work your calories around so that you have a small snack afterward.

ROSZINN,
Yes, DARTHLAURIE loves herself, as she should. Her posts are always well thought out and she has a large amount of common sense. Because of all that, we love her, too.
Tell us more about yourself, & be sure to check (& maybe join) G.I.Jane's newest challenge.

Hi AMBERHUDSON4,
I started decades ago with a book from the library, then recently moved with Shimmy on FITtv, then started buying a few videos. There is a whole thread on which ones various members like.
I'm really uncoordinated, so I stink no matter which format I use. Now ask me if I care how good I am!

It's all about enjoying yourself! Wait till GIJane posts a challenge for us! I don't always get to post, but I really love those challenges.

Do you have a mirror that you can workout in front of so you can see what you are tiring to do.

I'd have to say you're onto something great there Mama! That's so much of what the dance was about to begin with.

Absolutely! Make or buy her a fringed hip scarf. Jingly or sparkly is okay, too, just let her have it only when she's belly dancing with Mommy. And if you make one for her, why not make one for yourself? Something swing-y and/or sparkly that appeals to YOU! And maybe you can get hubby into swinging those hips, too. Keep us updated, Lauri

Thank you ^^

Actually I did have a question lol. I was wanting to let my daughter watch me bellydance however she's only two. Of course she wouldn't be able to do anything drastic, do a rotuine, but I do think she'd enjoy just dancing in her own way, since I don't expect much besides her being active and enjoying it. Till she can get old enough to pick a sport of her own. Any thoughts or suggestions?

First off - long posts are not a problem here. It helps us to know you better (you know, nosy belly dancers and the like.)

Oooh - new baby! Take it easy on yourself while you get back to some kind of normal.

I'm really glad that you've got a therapist on your side that's making you realize that you're a wonderful, valuable, worthy person. Keep it up - bipolar is tough to deal with, but we've got a dancer in our troupe that does a great job of it as well as handling her teenaged daughter who is also bipolar.

Pipe up if you've got any questions - or heck, if you just want to talk.

Hello. My name is Crystal. I have two daughters, the youngest is 2 weeks ^^; I'm new to the mother and wife scene but I really want to be a good example to my daughters and tone up for my husband emoticon and I've kinda always admired bellydancers from afar as something I'd like to do but never had the cahoonas to do it for very long.

I'm also bipolar and working on myself through theorpy. I've had a wonderful theorpist recently that has really changed my perspective of who I am and who I can become.

I really want to be a healthy person who is a good example to her daughters and a beautiful wife to her husband, I know he'll love me no matter what, but why not be attractive and all that adult stuff lol ^^;;

Because of my recent changes of view of myself and the situations I put myself in I want to do the only excersize that made me feel like a true woman in all her glory, bellydancing. I'm very much a beginner but I'm hoping to be better over time ^^

Sorry long post ^^;

A few quick questions :)

One... I'm trying to motivate myself to get to the gym more often and I figure by catering that time to my dancing as well it will encourage me to go. Are there any strength training exersizes (and anything else) that will benefit my dancing.

Two... I'm having a hard time finding tribal style belts (jingly hips) that are geared for larger frames. Any suggestions on websites?

Thanks in Advance :)

Fabulous in Fall
