I teach three shimmies to my beginner students. Hip twist (washing machine), hip lift and shoulder. It isn't until intermediate that I add vibrations, 3/4 and one leg bounce. I'll often add a few others just for fun.


Time spent with cats is never wasted.

At least you didn't start with "washing machine" aka twisting shimmies. This was the only kind my first instructor knew how to teach. I had to go way out on a limb to progress beyond her. Then, we changed studios about three years ago - thank you Desdemona!!!

Looking back, I can see my progression. I learned Suhaila style butt contraction shimmies first, in class, and I just assumed that was the right way when I started doing videos. It was at least a few months before I ever learned 3/4 shimmy, 2/4 shimmy or the egyptian shimmy. LOL I stuck with it, because it is easier to layer.

Reached my goal November 2009!

Weight Watchers worked for me and now I work for Weight Watchers.

It is a life style, not a life sentence.

A vibration is more of a muscular contraction than a regular shimmy - its sort of like shivering when you are cold. The movement can become so small and refined it becones hard to see. You should try and work on both small vibrational shimmies and great big loose shimmys to be well rounded in the shimmy department. :)

I shimmy flat footed for the most part. I still do not know if vibrating is good. :-)

I am glad it was worth the calories! LOL I use the calculator all of the time...and have since I started Spark People.

Vibrate huh??? Shimmy flat-footed or on your toes?

Instead of exercising like a good girl - I'm trying to get some on-line graphics group lessons finished. Too much to do - so little time! LOL

I shimmied for half an hour while my friend tried on clothes. My teacher pointed out that I "vibrate" when I shimmy. LOL

I am sure the celebration was wonderful and worth the intake of calories! :-D I use the recipe calculator all of the time.

Ugh - cooked son's 21st birthday dinner - all from the Royal Caribbean cookbooks. It didn't blow today diet - just put everything into it all at the same time! However, it was really cool using the SparkPeople Cookbook & calculator to figure out how to add the dishes up (not that there's a snowball's chance in Texas the recipes will get approved LOL) But man, the Chilled Apple Soup and Rum Rhapsody rocked!

Now, I'll have to shimmy for two hours to get it off!
