Photography turns into joining a troop, how does THAT happen? I haven't danced in ages and even then I was a rank beginner never having stepped foot on stage. I was talking to a woman about her troop posing for me for photographs and one thing lead to another and she asked me if I'd be interested in joining her troop. She's going to teach me for free so I can learn all the routines. Ack! She's already asking me for my hip size for costumes she is making. Sounds too fast for me but maybe I just need to say, 'yes' more? What do you all think?

They're so... fluffy! I love them, even though I wouldn't have conceived of them myself.

I do have a hangup about bare legs all the way up to the belt, though. I'd want an underskirt or harem pants under that thing!

Thanks Jill for the feedback. I contacted my former teacher bc I know she has a class running (it started last week) and see what she says. I think she's good and all but either my expectations are too high something bc I don't get the feeling that she's really a belly dancer if you know what I mean.

Hi Magik, I live, teach and perform in Northern NJ...I know Habiba only by her brilliant reputation...I was fortunate to watch her dance at Rakkasah year before last, but never had the pleasure of studying with her, though I would love to take a private or master class with her!

Whew. Taught my first beginner class of the session tonight! Bigger than expected, but not as big as I would prefer. It's a good size for learning, though, and they all left laughing, so it must have been a success.

I'm wiped though. Haven't done much SERIOUS dancing since they took out my gall bladder in December. Just around the house. I always forget how much more work teaching is!

My suggestion is to write to Fatima and ask if she knows of any quality teachers in your area. A VERY well known and much applauded teacher Habiba teaches in the Philly area...which is about a 30 min drive from KOP yes?
Also...try looking for teachers at OrientalDancer.net!

Hey ladies!
Is anyone from the Philly area? I am looking for a new dance teacher in the Philly area...moreso King of Prussia, does anyone know of one? I googled "belly dancing classes" plus my zip code and came across to a woman named Fatima that sounds wonderful to work with but she's in NJ. Just wondering if any of you may know of someone. Thanks!

Tomorrow I'm taking a three hour workshop on Modern Kathak, a style of dance from northern India. I know almost nothing about it so it's a bit of an adventure.

Funny differences - 'cause I danced a full faire season in them and ran all over the grounds. That was, of course, after a really good wetting and breaking-in. The mojari are definitely NOT easy at first! LOL

I am "jonesing" for a pair of jazz boots...but I've got too many shoes now! LOL!! If there is such a thing!!! 8)
The Indian mojari shoes I found to be beautiful, but totally unusuable for me...they're VERY hard vegetable tanned leather that doesn't 'give' at all...they were so painful to wear that I couldn't even walk in them!
I wish that Capezio would design a gorgeous sparkly dance flat...

True, true, Jill. I either use a lace-up jazz shoe or a slip on jazz boot (these are my favorites.) If you spin a lot, Indian stores carry a leather-soled shoe that is a dream to spin in. Leather soles are hard to come by these days - and they're quite cheap.

I was at a two day intensive with Mardi Love a while back and she suggested shoes too. :-) I have not found what I am looking for, I did NOT like any of the dance sneakers I tried on locally.

Reached my goal November 2009!

Weight Watchers worked for me and now I work for Weight Watchers.

It is a life style, not a life sentence.

Hi all...I've been gone for a while...but undulate back in here to read when I am able!!!
I urge my students to wear shoes to class...even those who prefer bare feet...our feet are our instruments...once you've stepped on glass, a broken bead or developed microscopic tears in ligaments from dancing barefoot, you'll realize how important it is to protect your body.
There are terrific dance sandals that work beautifully for Belly Dance including full and partial foot coverage. For shows and gigs, I always wear full shoes. In class, I tend to wear jazz sneakers or other jazz shoes because I need the support! (I teach an average of 8 hrs a week and then shows on the weekend...)

Ya...I am a bear foot gal too...but there are several different kinds of dance shoes you can get..I have the kind that lace op the front and ones that are leather and just have a bottom at your toes..these I like a lots, but just check out what is out there..a dance store is the best.

I prefer to dance bare feet but for those occasions when I don't trust the flooring I have a pair of shoes that have a leather bottom and just laces over the foot and up the ankle.

Do a lot of people wear shoes to classes, and if so, what kind? I know where I will be taking classes the floor isn't great (it's not a studio), so I was thinking I should probably wear some type of shoe, maybe a dance slipper of some sort.

I know where your are, I've been gone for a while.. same thing. Family stuff & work. Of course my lifestyle suffered the most. Will get back to logging & posting. Our studio had a "Winter Gathering" on Sunday. I danced to "Santa Bring my Baby Back to Me" by Elvis. It was fun.

Suhaila was just visiting Charleston and did a class. Any idea how many calories 3 hours with her burns? My glutes will never be the same!
