Easternstar,
I have a couple of pictures of myself in bellydance costume on my page. I had some professional pics taken last weekend, though, and I can't WAIT to see how they turned out. I'm borth excited about it and dreading it a little.

My goal is to get back to 168 (within my healthy weight range) after a stressful relocation.

Hello Easternstar,
thank you so much for the birthday gram-WOW!!!!
I have started dancing in my chair at work, everyone looks at me funny, but I don't care. It is one way to get a little extra exercise and I need to tighten up the jelly belly. I was was fat and firm, now I'm losing and loose!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's bad enough that I could hurt someone with my boobs or the flab under my arms, but now I can give them a gut punch too!!!!
Keep dancing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bonnie

Love the sights I got directed to also.

Aeroflot, I have three belly dance pictures on my page that I googled once upon a time. One I'm using as a profile picture, the other two I added for you to look at if you like. We really should all put pur money where our mouths are and put our own pictures up. Blow the dust off those harem pants, put our best belly roll forward...

Hello, hello! I followed Bonniebee and her trail led to the Belly Dancers.I started dancing about the same time as I joined Sparks. January. But I take two classes a week and I am loving it.
I just finished making an outfit I felt comfortable in- no belly peeking out yet!- and am looking forward to making a skirt. Don't care much about wearing it but I am intrigued by the rich embroidery and colourful resourcefulness of the tribal costumes.
So that's my exercise. A WHOLE lot better than nuttin',honey!

Hi everyone. My name is Phoenix and I'm new to SP. I've started dancing after a trip to the Middle East 7 years ago. I took American Tribal lessons for about 2 years but then moved to a part of the country with no teachers (MS). I've tried dancing on my own but haven't been as consistent as I'd would have liked. Now, I am looking forward to losing the 20-something pounds I've gained during my first year of marriage.

Happy May Day everyone!

My bellydance style is pretty much Egyptian cabaret for now, though I've done some tribal. As for bellydance dvd's, I must admit to being a Neena and Veena twin. I haven't taken any classes for a while, thanks to no money and a bedrest-filled pregnancy, but as soon as the doc gives me the ok on it, I'm going to start dancing at home again. After all, gotta teach my brand new daughter, right? emoticon

I can't believe I only just now found this group. I'm going to run off to join straightaway!

I do American Tribal Style and had a wonderful dance performance last night. Today, I'm coming down hard after all the performance jitters, but my new goal is to try to practice dance at least a bit every day. I'm glad to find you all!

Do you have your tivo accessing through the computer or the phone line? If it is through the computer, all you need to do is get a linksys for the tivo (you'll have to check their site to see which one works for your model tivo since they are different) and then add it to your network. Tivo has some software that you can download so that you are able to transfer things back and forth! They have some great information about how to do it at tivo.com.

I already have a wireless network for my computers in the house, but I'm not sure how to hook the Tivo up to it.

You can network your Tivo to your computer and transfer the programs there and burn them to DVD...I do it alot! I tivo my son's favorite programs and burn them on disc to look at later, that way I don't take up precious space on my tivo! I have mine set up on a wireless network in my house (costs about $80 to get the whole system set up, including your hardware costs). Its made life a lot nicer!

Does anybody have a good bellydancing picture that we can use to go with this Group Forum? I belong to a Buffy group (don't laugh, my daughter got me hooked on Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and they have a cool little picture of the whole Slayer gang.

Hi, my name is Tara.

I have TIVO, so I have two bellydancing sessions recorded on my television, from a PBS special that was on last year, which I've been planning to do for a while, but have yet to do. They were supposed to send me the tapes as a gift for my donation to PBS, but I never got them.

I really like dancing, and bellydancing certainly uses a lot of muscles I'd like to tone, and it is so sensual and womanly, that even when you're heavier than you want to be, it still feels good to do it. So, I'm glad I saw this site!

If I could just figure out how to get my VCR hooked up to the TIVO, I could tape the shows, or maybe I can try to find them online somewhere. How about a BELLYDANCING CHALLENGE for the weekend? We can all report in how much bellydancing we did over the weekend, and give ourselves points. I'm very much a beginner, but I have a lot of enthusiasm!!

Hi Girls,

Just found this group, hope you don't mind that I joined :)

I am a total closet belly dancer - was planning to go professional back in the day but then I got pregnant and destroyed my belly. Now am starting to practice again at home.

Glad I found this group :-)

I was so excited to trip across this group! I signed up for sparkpeople earlier today so I'm just starting to learn all the features. I LOVE belly dance...its my main workout and my stress relief. I'm just starting to get into the performance end of it after two years of dancing and learning to love even that! Look forward to meeting everyone here!

I live in Clackamas, Oregon which is just outside of Portland. For being a "big" city, Portland is still pretty rural. I went through major culture shock when I first moved up here! I just like the scenery and pace of life better. Plus the cost of living altho not matching wages here is still a lot less than California.
I'll look on Amazon, but I'm not sure who or what I'm seeing. It'd be nice if there was a preview!!! I did pretty classical dancing before. I even have some old vinyl albums that I wish I could find on CD now!!! I'll look at the titles and maybe you might recognize them, maybe not cuz they are from almost 30 years ago. I still love the dance, just do at home for the exercise and for the joy it gives me.
Happy dancing!!!

Bonnie, I don't have access to any DVDs either. I ordered these from Amazon.com and had them delivered to a friend's house in the states. Some people are coming down to Costa Rica the 27th and they'll bring them to me. Check out the selection on Amazon...they have quite a few.

That's a riot that you guys could use your real names and have it sound so professional!! I bet you miss dancing. Where do you live now?

BGINCOSTARICO,
Looking forward to what you think of the DVD"s.. I don't live in an area that carries much in the standard stores and I haven't found any specialty places either. I got out of dancing while I was raising my kids, but I'm going to look around for a class or something like that. I took lots of classes and danced with a partner when I lived in the Bay Area, California. We were Bonnie and Rawnie, both our real nmes!!!!
Hope you had a nice Easter. I'm tired from all the services, I need a week to rest up.
Blessings,
Bonnie

Bonnie, I'll get my DVDs on the 27th and I'll let you know what I think of them. The newsclip of our belly dancing class aired last night, and a neighbor called to say that the whole family was gathered around the TV laughing so it must've been pretty bad. Then this morning when I went in three different places while out running errands someone in each place mentioned that they saw me (with a big smile). Thank God I didn't have to see it!!!

Good morning girls...

I had two shows this weekend, and both went pretty well.

I still get SO nervous before I have to perform, especially sunday's show, since it was in front of the entire local bellydance community.
At the very least when I'm shaking so bad, my shimmies look pretty good!

It's getting better all the time.

Hi! I signed up to join this group today...I haven't been taking belly dance lessons in over year due to an injury, but I LOVE this art form and the way it makes me feel. Belly dancing changed my life when I started it almost 8-9 year's ago. I've taken class lessons off and on ever since, depending on the instructor. I've found another really nice studio with an awesome instructor close to my house, so I'm planning to resume the lessons here within the next 3-6 months. What I love the most about this dance form is the women who are involved. For the most part, women who belly dance are very nice and pleasant to be around. It's a great cardio workout, the costumes are so cool and women of every shape and size take it. I hope to get to know all of you. Have a great Thursday!

also, you can hurt your hip joints, your knees and your shoulders.

Don't get me wrong... bellydancing is a great low-impact form of activity, but since there's a lot of twisting and isolation of your muscles, it's important to do things properly. A lot of girls arch their backs when they're dancing (because it kinda looks cool - like the james bond movies) but that is SO hard on your lower back. not bending your knees or trying to bend forward too far can definately strain your joints.

It's getting better all the time.

MISS MURKY,

That is so true. If I did a video I would've never knows there was a way to hold your body so you don't hurt your spine. I'm so happy I had a live teacher to help me with a lot of the moves.

In a lot of cities there are belly dancering instructors. Shop around for one. I highly recommend it.

It's really valuable to have some live instruction...it helps you with proper form.

A lot of people use the videos, and since they don't always explain how to properly stand, or break down the moves it can lead to injuries down the road.

It's getting better all the time.

CG, you're so lucky to have one on one classes. I'd love that!!

I just ordered three belly dancing DVDs from Amazon. I hope they're good. When you don't know much about something it's hard to make an educated decision. I also saw on-line that Rachel Brice (I think that was her name) from Sahara Dance is coming to Costa Rica to give a weeklong workshop at a yoga retreat down in Alajuela. The workshop is aimed at people from the states with airfare and room and board (all inclusive). I might call the retreat direct and ask about drop-ins from Costa Rica and see what the price would be like.

Hi everyone!

I started belly dancing October 2005 year by seeing a flier in the curves gym I work out. I signed up for lessons and learned a few dances and a lot of moves. I was very nervous because everyone in there was a size 4 or below and I was the only big girl. It didn't stop me one bit, my teacher remarked on how well I was able to move, she said I was a natural.

I love it! We had to stop the lessons because everyone stopped coming. As for me I'm starting up private lessons with my belly dancing teacher.

She is teaching me all sorts of belly dancing, Modern Egyptian, Turkish style (I really loved the dress she shown me for this one), Shimmy (I do this well), American Tribal (I like this because of the drums), Folkloric, and Middle Eastern (Indian, my bf is Indian so I try to learn this but it's really hard because any wrong move and its insulting).

I don't know a lot about each of these different styles, there is even more than this but each is very interesting. My favorite is cabaret because I like to use a lot of my feet, legs, and I like to feel the beat with the drums.

It was probably at least a year before I felt like I was "getting it" And after 2.5 years, I've only recently gotten to the point where I can start performing solo (and I still have a lot of room for improvement!)

I mostly dance at student shows and showcases that are a part of weekend workshops with master instructors. Over the summer, we'll probably be dancing at street fairs and festivals and things too.

I'll check that site out. You wrote that you've been dancing for a few years. How long did it take before you felt like you were "getting it"? I wish our class was offered more than once a week, but that's not going to happen.

Where do you usually dance when you perform?

There's a really great collection of reviews of DVD's here:

t.htm

I've never seen Amira's Bellydance 101, but Jillina's series is pretty good. It teaches a choreography, so you'll learn the moves in the choreography, not an overview of beginning moves. Discover Bellydance may be a better choice for learning technique.

I'm with Mary. I need some ideas on DVDs. I've narrowed down my search to these three: Amira's Belly dance 101; Instructional Bellydance With Jillian; and Discover Bellydance. Are these good choices? Our gym started offering BDing two months ago so I am REALLY a beginner but I love it. The class is only offered once a week so I need something for home practice.

I was thinking of trying belly dancing. Can you guys recommend some DVDs that you think are good? I looked on Amazon and there are so many different ones I have no clue what's worth it.

Thanks,
Mary

I used to do Egyptian. I danced in the bay area ages ago, usually with a partner, as I've always had asthma and 45 minutes by myself killed me!!! But I also did a lot of charity functions cause I worked for a social Service agency. The guys at the fire stations were the best tippers!!!!
Now I have a mix of CD's and I do it for the exercise, although if I drop enough weight and get a new costume---who knows???

So who should I be talking to that you know who needs my skills?

Hi everyone!

I didn't realise there was an offical belly dancer's group!!!

I've got two shows coming up next weekend, I'm performing my first duet, with my own first choreograhy that I designed myself. I'm pretty nervous.

Where are you all located? I'm in Calgary, Canada.

I used to take lessons and learned some awesome moves. They closed though (I cried) but picked up a couple of DVD's to practice and use as cardio as well. Fun thing I did last year (when I was taking classes), I made a costume for halloween. I should take a picture and show y'all.

Anything is possible..

I just started doing belly dancing for my cardio. It's a fun way to burn calories. I just love it. I am not good at dancing, normally. Somehow I've been able to keep up with the belly dancing moves.

Okay, I am not a true dance like everyone else is, but I do enjoy watching and trying some moves out. I regularly use belly dancing movies to exersice and get my cardio. I can't believe how hard it is and how like jello I feel afterwards.

But great fun.

I'm doing great. I just got home from a weeklong vacation in England. I didn't lose anything while I was gone, but I didn't gain either.

Just to get people started talking, I figured I'd ask a little question... What style do you all dance? I've been studying Egyptian style for a few years and *love* it. I love dancers with a slightly folkier edge. I could watch Fifi Abdo videos all day long!

Any other Egyptian style dancers out there? AmCab or Tribal sisters? I'd love to hear what you're up to!
