Ok....so it took GreenLayer 3 months to FINALLY mail out my SFHM tech T! Unbelievable! For those of you who opted to wait for your HM shirts, look in your mailboxes. On top of getting my shirt, I also received a plain red visor with an elastic back. Cool. But also, I received a coupon from Green Layer with "Our Apologies". They are giving us 30% off of Greenlayer apparel. Very Cool! Maybe I'll look at some more CA Dreamin' apparel from them!
Denise

Update: I tried to use the "coupon code" to order arm warmers. It only gave me 10% off, not 30% like the coupon said. I have my serious doubts about Green Layer.

As some of you may know, on Saturday 7/25, the SFM expo ran out of HM tech T's. We had the option to wait for them to send it to us or to take a Marathon shirt instead. I chose to wait. So I got an email stating they got my request and the shirt will be mailed out to me in September. If you did not get an email and you chose the same option I did....here is the website to email them.
http://www.green-layer.com/halfmarathonshirtupdate.php

ALSO, while I was perusing the website, I found some REALLY COOL shirts, hoodies, jackets, and accessories from the SFM. They also have the same stuff with the THREE RACES (SF, LG, SC) & California Dreamin' printed on it. Check it out! I was impressed with the products. It isn't cheap, but it is comparable to other similar products. Wouldn't it be cool if you could have it by Long Beach for those of us yet to earn our CA Dreamin Jacket & Metal? Also CA Dreamin' runners get 10% off!!!!
Check this out!

well, by now we have gotten it *done*.
missJC i looked out for yr shirt but you were probably too far ahead!
it was incredible being out there with all these runners. i was thinking "do they know how incredibly fantastic they look, so strong....."
the first half was great. then the sun came out and i wilted. still great though.
found some pix at SF chronicle thought you might enjoy.

I have a really hard time running without music, although I usually try to run with the volume low and/or only one ear bud in. I think I would skip a race if they absolutely didn't allow ipods.

hi sonasmom
when i ran it in 05 i wore headphones. to be honest, i have worn headphones on every race, even ones where they discouraged it, like SD RnR. there is just no way for them to police everyone.
otoh, i did find this on the runsfm.com website, under general info, under faq's:

Can I use headphones?
We strongly encourage runner's not to wear headphones during the race. This is not only due to runner safety on any race course, but also because we are on an urban course. It is important that runners are very aware of their surroundings and what is going on in case of emergency, and also to be aware of the traffic and your surroundings. If you must wear headphones then we do ask that you only wear them in one ear.

not sure why the conflicting info. i m going w/ the one i like better...

I was reading the race's website for the route, etc. and saw that they aren't allowing ipod/headsets....I'm not sure how I would do without music. Is everyone just wearing them any way or just going to cope without music??

Hi Everyone!

It has been awhile since I posted, but was able to catch up on all the comments and good info here and am excited for my first half marathon this weekend in SF too!

I've been training...not as consistently as I'd have liked but hoping for the best with what work I have done.

This is also my 2nd race of the CA Dreamin searies. I'll be driving up tonight from Orange County with some friends and staying in a hotel in the city.

I would love to meet up with you all at the expo and hang out!

it's wendy but dirtdogs sounds cooler IMHO emoticon

tammy, hope your achilles is healing. says a lot about our sport when you go to any running retailer's website and there is a whole link to "injury prevention and tx". OTOH, for someone as klutzy as i am, it is still probably safer overall.

my achilles has been pestering me, too, it is related to the sprained ankle and the gimpy gait. i fill a freezer bag w/ crushed ice and ace wrap it after runs, and bf i run i heat up my moist heat heat wrap and warm up and then gently massage the calf/achilles area. i am also experimenting w/ sleeping w/ an ace wrap bandage around my lower leg, from below the knee to the ankle bone. not too tight though, it should not cut off circulation or make it so it hurts to walk. i am also massaging the calf/achilles/arch area w/ tiger balm in the evenings and plan to bf the start of the race. i am not usually this conscientous, i am more likely to flop on the sofa and ignore the problem, but heh, with a distance race there are those moments of truth..... DH just mentioned that the house smells like "essence of old man". huh.

SF might be a bit on the cool side. if you are in the first half you will be starting at dawn. accuweather says the "real feel" temp will be high 40s, with winds in the teens. so make sure your lower leg, including your entire calf area, is nice and warmed up.

Hi Everyone! Welcome Dirtdog (and so we meet again... teehee). I'm with you and Sonasmom - injured and hoping to just make it through... a little nerve-wracking, no?

Jackie said she had tried to map all our hotels but got frustrated. I don't know how to do that either, at least not on one map, but what I did do was create fitness maps that you can all link to showing each of our hotels in relation to the expo! Maybe I'll even get motivated and do one with each hotel in relation to each other, like a loop... OK, I said maybe.

I just decided to list them in another post... sorry if that's confusing.

Ananda I got the same e-mail...did you see the CA Dreamin clothes and accessories...I love the ladies singlet!!! I posted it on my Facebook page!!! I don't usually buy expo stuff but this time I might have to make an exception like I did for the Jiggy skirt at Surf City!!!

Great info about the course and running the bridge...I haven't been doing much hill work but am not really trying to get a PR with Disneyland and Long Beach coming up soon!!!

sonasmom: i hear ya on the nervousness. i hope my L leg holds up. still definitely borderline, but i just checked the runsfm.com website and they say fewer than 100 spots left so i quickly gave them my credit card number! so i guess i am paid up now.
of course, we could go all yoda on you.
there is no try......do or do not.....luke.....

ananda: just dont be too frustrated if the bridge is congested. if it is and you can just tuck in and rest up a bit then you can blaze once you get off the bridge. the sitch bec and i got into was that we were trying *so* hard and expending so much energy just running in place and going sideways....
if you have been training in the heat down here, and you get up there and it is all nice and cool you are gonna be like on jet fuel!

I hear ya on the So Cal heat! I will be super bummed if the bridge is crowded and slows me down to a 13 min mile - I'm going for a PR! Maybe all that hill training will help me stay ahead of the slower runners.

hello everybody.

sorry to just jump in....found out about this team fr msjc's post in the marathon team.
i am planning on the full this wkend. getting around to committing....sprained ankle on last long run and healing up from that and all the other things that it triggered! the family will be driving up early sat, staying at the hyatt. got the marathon rate.

for those of you who havent done this race bf....SF is my favorite, tied w/ Catalina. the weather is great, esp after struggling in the heat in So Cal, and SF is such a great city. there are hills, yes, but not terrible. the way i remember it (i did it once, in 05), you are climbing this hill, and just getting tired when it flattens out, or going downhill, and just starting to feel it say in the knees when it flattens out. running thru the neighborhoods, people left signs on the cars....."nice a**". i actually found it easier than SD bc my run-flat-continuously muscles dont work so good.

for those of you doing the golden gate route, this is what i learned. i was running w/ a good friend who is terrified of bridges, so we worked very hard to try to get off of it as quickly as possible. this does not really work. they close something like 2 lanes for the runners, but there is still car traffic in the other lanes. trying to pass expends a lot of energy and you look at yr GPS and your pace is uh, 13 min. so just tuck in and enjoy the ride and cruise along w/ the crowd.

hope to see some of you up there.

Super shuttle is a good alternative for airport transportation to the hotel. I think when I looked its $17 each way.

No more news on BART - both unions have rejected the offer and supposedly are going to restart negotiations. I'll be watching..

The big hurdle is Airport to Downtown transportation - I haven't found a good alternative yet myself - but if the strike happens before I leave on friday I'll call SF transportation agency for recommendations. Once in the city, though, bus and light rail work quite well.

Getting together at the expo sound like a great idea.

Welcome to the team Bob!!! I think you are the first official male member of the California Dreamin team...although there are at least two husbands running their first 1/2 marathons on San Francisco!!!

I'm sorry I haven't updated on this thread more often...seems like things in my non-running life have been crazy hectic AGAIN!!! NO need to go into all the details but let's just say getting out of town for a few day and a beautiful race with you wonderful people is just what I need right now!!!

Any word on the BAART strike...anyone know the logistic of getting from the Oakland airport to the Chinatown area cheaply...I'm flying in Thursday late afternoon and leaving Monday late afternoon!!!

I would love to meet up at some point for some pictures at the Expo on Saturday and maybe late lunch/early dinner!!! If you want to share your cell number, send me a Spmail and I will compile a list and circulate it!!!

I'm sure there is more I am forgetting...I'll try to update more as the week progresses!!!

BTW...How is everyone feeling...I did my last long run on Saturday...8 wonderful cramp free miles!!! My food has been all over the place so my weight is up a little today but I can feel myself retaining fluid...I'm going to be drinking a lot this week to combat the heat and dehydration from flying!!! I would hate to cramp up going over the Bridge!!!

See you all soon!!!!

I'm running the 2nd Half. Sorry I'll miss the Bridge, but someone told me the 1st half is hilly (isn't the whole City?) and I always have a weird phobia about being on high open places - like I wanna take flight! I think it's the Icarus Syndrome or something - there's a name for it, anyway.

My wife is running the full.

My SIL is in San Carlos, so we'll be hanging out there most of the time. We'll also be jet-lagged as all get-out, having flown in from Seoul just a few days prior. We just hope to get to the start AWAKE and go from there.

I know on Saturday morning we'll be dropping my HS junior son off at USF for a baseball camp then probably heading over to the expo.

(Lived 10 years in Santa Barbara and am a UCSB grad, so I joined the team!)

Hey Everyone,

Just an FYI, there are reports out about a possible BART strike. Apparently the workers have been without a contract for a while and a new offer went out that they will be voting on this week. I'll be watching for updates.

Ok, I just booked my hotel in SF for the SFHM. I know I am late doing so. I will be staying at the Club Quarters on Clay St across from Embarcadero One. My family will be joining me and we will be there from Fri - Mon. We are making a mini vacation of it. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

My son and I will be flying in on Saturday morning and we'll be staying at a hotel about a block from the start and we'll be running the 2nd half. We fly back on Sunday afternoon after the race. No time to stay an extra day because my son starts school on Monday!

My plan right now is to use bart for transportation to and from the airport and to the expo, it looks like it's pretty easy to use from what I see on the website.

Sorry I will miss the Sparkrally, I live too far away.

I am staying at the Harbor Court hotel right by the start with my Hubby and my family is coming to watch me! Woot! I will miss you all at the Sparkrally because I will be in Agoura Hills that weekend for my cousin's 8th birthday :)

How is training coming along? I have hit one 14 miler so far and have been running some hills - they are killing me but I hope they help me be ready on 7/26! I have one more 14 miler planner before SF.

Hi Everyone! I have been in "forced rest" mode for nearly a month now, excepting the duathlon I did last weekend because I still have acute achilles tendonitis and now some disturbing knee problems... I'm still planning on flying into OAK on Friday and leaving on Monday race weekend; just hope I'm healed by then!

I'm staying at the St. Francis in Union Square... would love to meet up for meals, exploration, etc! I won't be in LB for the rally, otherwise committed that day, but wish you all a great time!

Good Morning Team!!!

We are ONLY 38 days away from San Francisco...I can't believe it is almost here!!! I am really excited about this trip although I am disappointed my favorite runner girl may not be joining us...as many of you know Janey has been battling an Achilles injury since March and running San Francisco's hills may not be in the cards for her this year!!! I know we all wish her a "speedy" recovery and are looking forward to welcoming her back to the racing world at Long Beach in October!!!

On a different but related note, I am wondering if any of you are traveling up alone or are you traveling with spouses and kids...the reason I ask is I reserved a timeshare and if Janey does not go, I will have room to share my space with one or two other people !!! The room is a one bedroom mini suite with a pull out couch in the living room and has a mini kitchen...the room are fairly small but does allow privacy!!! It is located .8 miles from the starting line!!! I am planning on going up Thursday evening and leaving Monday morning but I have the room reserved from Wednesday to Wednesday (timeshares have to be booked for a full week when booked far in advance)!!!

If anyone is interested in sharing please send me a e-mail so we can discuss the specifics!!!

See you all soon!!! Don't forget the SPrally on June 27th in Long Beach!!!

Jackie!!!

Well I just took a leap of faith and registered for the half (1st half that is). I still have my xmas gift money that I can use for airfare, and hope that I get enough for my birthday (which is on the 4th) to cover the room).

The husband just left for Ensenada for the Baja 500 race so I may have some leverage when he gets backemoticon

By the way, De, which half are you doing? The first or the second? I signed up for the 2nd, I wanted to finish at the finish line, not be bused to the finish....

Yes OAK is a much easier airport to get around in, I agree, and it usually is cheaper. Just be aware, on the day of the race, BART does not run that early.

Good luck!
De

I can't remember the last time I flew into SFO. We always go OAK. My inlaws live in Hayward, and we used to live in Castro Valley, just south of Oakland, so OAK is MUCH closer

I live in the East Bay. Absolutely fly into OAKLAND. SFO is always a MESS. Bart is right there. It will take you straight into the city. Avoid the Oak Room - pricey. Check out sanfrancisco.Citysearch.com for ideas on where you might like to eat.

Thanks De! I checked the website and airline prices and unfortunately the cost into Oakland was much less, so I'm going there... I hope I don't regret that! It does say you take AirBART to the train station, then BART into the city. But they sell a package ticket for AirBART and the train that is discounted.

I appreciate the feedback! Now, any suggestions on places to eat that won't break the bank? I'm staying in Union Square...

I lived in the Bay Area most of my life. I'd say BART is easier to use from SFO. OAK airport is easier to get around in, but I do not recall BART being close by. You can take an AirBART shuttle to BART. OAK is closer to SF then SFO. SFO is actually in San Bruno on the Peninsula. I grew up viewing SFO airport from my bedroom window. Before I moved out of state in early 2004, the NEW airport/Millbrae stations were not quite finished yet, so I have yet to see them. If I were you, take SFO to BART. Here is the website for BART to give you an idea.

http://www.bart.gov/stations/index.aspx
hope this helps!

I booked into the Westin using frequent flyer points, just have to pay the taxes...

Do any of you know if its easier to ride Bart from OAK or SFO into the city? I'm flying up on Friday and back on Monday so I'll need to get myself to the airport and am looking for the easiest transportation...

Is anyone doing the 2nd half? I thought that might be fun since it finishes with the marathon...and do you know what they mean by keychain medals? Are they smaller? Do they come on a ribbon or just a keychain?

I really hope I get to meet some of you!

Janey,
I am considering at least the 5K in Pasadena. I am tempted to do the HM, but have not committed to either yet.

As far as the shirts go, they do sell them at SOME expos on race day, but they caution that it may cost more. I may check the shirts out at Pasadena and then go online to purchase for SF and/or Long Beach.

Denise, I was so temped to get that Wear Your Number Shirt for Pasadena. I was gonna have "See Jane Run" on mine. LOL

They make them right at the expo if you want to wait to check it out in person. But at the expo they are only prepped to do that race's shirt.

Are you running Pasadena, too?

I was checking out the SF Marathon & Pasadena Marathon websites and was wondering if anyone was going to get a www.wearyournumber.com tech T for the SF race? It is soooooo cool looking. It does cost $28-30 for the bib-shirt, but it is a memorable keepsake to wear while training for the next HM. The WYN T is available for many M's & HM's, SF, Pasadena, Long Beach, Carlsbad....to name a few.

So I pose this question.

Who is getting a wearyounumber Tshirt? And what comments are you considering placing on the bib?

I am considering the WYN Tshirt bib and the comments I'm considering are the following:

"Running My ASS off"
"Will Run for Beer"
"Running 4 my Boyz - Eric & David"
"Leading by Example for Eric & David"
"Running....It's all about ME!"

Denise,
Wow.

You'll have to email me you FIL's name - bet my dad knew him..

I know what you mean about the cementaries in that area, a bit weird. I have two friends that lived in SSF, near there.

Me, I graduated from Notre Dame in Belmont in '83. Most of the people I went through elementary school with graduated from Carlmont in'84 (yea, skipped a grade, long story). After HS, I went to UC Berkeley and graduated in '87. Moved back in the with folks and worked in Foster City until end of '89 when I transfered to the office here in OC (Tustin) - they're we're closing my office and I had a choice of Tustin or Concord - I was ready for a move.

I went back to school in '94 to Cal Poly Pomona and graduated with my engineering degree in '98, and then off to work again.

I was born at Mt. Zion - there's a story there too.
I moved south in nov '89, just after the big quake, and then got to experience the northridge one down here.

I still miss the bay, especially the greenery. AFter a months of 90+ degrees and santa ana winds, around the fall, I still get homesick for fog.

Suzanne,

FIL worked for AA in cargo handling or something like that. He retired late in 08.

I went to Crestmoor HS in San Bruno my freshman yr then they closed it and I was bussed to Capuchino in Millbrae. I lived directly off 280 nearer to Daly City. It seems weird to me now to have a front and center bedroom view of a huge cemetary. But I didn't think anything of it then. Every once in a while we had to crank up the TV to hear it as the planes flew very close overhead. I had my 20yr HS reunion in '03, but no 25th (it was cancelled early on). We had it at the Embassy Suites in SSF. I went to USF on Fulton & Arguello, probably near you. Graduated in 94 from their nursing school. I hope to visit USF during the SF marathon as it will end very near there. I also worked at Mt Zion, UCSF Med Ctr, Sheraton Hotel, Hyatt Regency all in SF. My Mom & Sister also lived in SF in the Marina during the big quake. That was scary.

How long has it been since you lived in SF? What school did you go to?

Denise,

OMG, talk about small world....

I grew up in Belmont (we moved when I was 4, in 1970 - we lived next GG park and my parents thought it was getting a little too weird for them). We had a view of the planes in their landing pattern too (no cemetary view though).

What HS did you go to?

My dad also worked for AA - 37 years before retiring in '97. Most of his years were spent in freight service, but he worked a few other areas too.

I don't get back often either. I was their in Sept for what was supposed to be my 25 yr HS reunion. I got up there on friday and got a email that the reunion luncheon for saturday was cancelled - yea I've was peeved about the lack of notice. But I'd gotten a great rate on a room at the Sofitel and ended up spending a rather pleasant and enjoyable day in the city on my own.

Hey Suzanne, I grew up in San Bruno right in the flight pattern of the SFO Airport (SFO is in San Bruno, not SF!). My bedroom overlooked the Golden Gate Cemetary AND the Airport. I knew the back roads to SFO too, and my Father-in-law worked for AA for 30 yrs and recently retired. Huh, small world! I haven't been back there in 12 yrs, except for Mi Abuelita's funeral in Oct.

Janey I have the timeshare so if you can stand to bunk with me again, don't worry about a place to stay!!! Too far ahead to say if Kenny is going but it is really doubtful since he has a Vegas convention sometime in July!!!

Just a note - I read on the Runsfm site that the Bart doesn't run on Sundays until 8:00 am, so not an option for race day.

EDIT: Just read your post Lasirinita! I just booked the Harbor Court Hotel as well. I stayed at a kimpton hotel for my Bachelorette party and it was awesome. I am super excited now!

Ok, I'm not a TON of help but I've figured out my plan at least. I live in San Jose so I was just going to take Caltrain to BART to the city, but BART WON'T BE RUNNING EARLY ENOUGH SUNDAY AM TO GET TO THE START IN TIME! Ahh! It's awful to not have BART! So, I decided to get a hotel because I definitely don't want to have to drive and park that early. Ugh, I am not a morning person.

I'm flying my sister up from OC to have a sister weekend (she'd never even think about running but she's supportive at least!). I booked her flight from Long Beach to San Jose on Jetblue for $120 with taxes & fees. It's about an hour drive from SJ to SF so it's not too bad, and I'd be doing the drive anyways! If anyone hadn't checked/didn't know, Virgina America is going to start doing the OC/SFO route in April for $60 each way. Something to look into. Also, know that traffic permitting, the drive isn't bad at all. I drive from SJ to HB all the time and it's NEVER taken me more than 6 hours (with the exception of the day after Thanksgiving. Stupid fog on the 5 made everyone go 45mph), sometimes closer to 5 hours. So, add to that the +1 to SF and it's totally do-able. Then again, I've driven from HB to Seattle in one day so I may have a warped sense of do-able.

I booked a room at the Harbor Court Hotel which is .1 of a mile from the start. I opted for a big room/nice view (extra $$) because I've promised a fun sister weekend, but if you have AAA it's $199 a night for a double or queen room WITH PARKING which is amazing because last time I stayed in the city parking was an extra $40 on top of the room. I read a zillion reviews and the only complaint about the hotel I picked is that the rooms are tiny, but hey, I live in downtown SJ in a 100 year old victorian in a 400 square foot unit, I'm familiar with tiny. Anyways, when you book your room anywhere in SF don't forget to ask about parking charges! =)

**I need to add more details that excite me about my hotel. No hideous flowered bedspreads! Aveda toiletries! They have a wine reception in the evenings and milk & cookie time at 9 pm! How awesome is that! I always opt for boutique hotels over chains and this is one of those examples why! **

great info, thanks!

Jackie, I once looked into taking the train and it doesn't go straight to San Fran, you have to take two trains and takes about 11 hours to get there. I was shocked that there isn't a train straight there.

Still thinking about San Fran Half - will decide next week and start looking into reserving hotels and saving the money to do it.

But cheering all of you on whether I go or not!

Well as a native of the city (okay it's been almost 20 years since I moved south), a few suggestions here.

Now I haven't looked at the course map, but knowing what I do about the city. There are a lot of hotels in SF. Check the major travel sites, expedia, orbitz etc. You can do better than $500 a night. Granted summer is tourist season, but I'd expect this summer to be a little slow. A good site is also Hotwire.com. I've gotten great rates there, just read the terms and conditions as it is a discounter.

There are a lot of smaller hotels around the union square and downtown area, as well as around the fisherman's wharf area. SF is pedestrian friendly with good public transportation, BART, Bus, cable cars etc. You can plan on street closures around the route, and watch the web site for updates.

As for flying, yes Oakland will generally be cheaper, as will San Jose. SFO is notorius for being one of the most expensive airports, and can be difficult to get in and out when you don't know your way around (my dad worked there for over 30 yrs so I knew the back roads). I'd be watching fares on Southwest, Jet Blue and Virgin America.

Parking in the city is difficult and expensive. If you're on a budget, public transportation will be your best bet.

AS to whether I'll be going? That remains to be seen. I really would like to to complete the 3 race series, but....not sure I can both afford it and get away.

Ideally, I'd like to make it part of a larger trip for the week. This year's NDSC convention (National Down Syndrome Congress) is going to be in Sacramento the weekend after SF Marathon, and I'd like to attend (the last one on the west coast was 5 yrs ago, and I learned so much). I'd like to be able to take a week off, go to SF for the race, then go spend a few days at my parent's house in Lake Almanor, and then head back down to Sacramento for the conference. We'll see...emoticon

Staying in Oakland as well as flying into Oakland Airport is probably a better option. BART will take you directly into the Embarcadero. You could stay in Berkeley too. BART is quick and easy, but I do imagine it will be packed with other runners that day too. I will actually be staying in Benicia at my Mom's condo and probably BART in. Parking anytime, anywhere in the city is always a nightmare, let alone during an event. I will be driving up to the Bay Area with my family.
De

PS: My Mom worked and lived in The City for many years near the Embarcadero. I will call her to pick her brain to get some options for some of you.

Patty you might want to check flights into Oakland instead of San Francisco!!! We flew into Oakland and took the BAART into San Francisco..it really was pretty easy!!! Flights to Oakland seem cheaper than into San Francisco...at least from the LA area!!!

Remember if you drive...parking is REALLY REALLY expensive in San Francisco!!!!

What happened to $49 one way flights?????

Andrea, I think I know where you are staying, but I'm not a 100% sure yet. If it's the one I'm thinking of it's quite beautiful and it has a restaurant at the top that rotates slowly giving you a 360 degree view of city lights and more. My husband and I ate there once, it's on my list to get there again. It's pricey and its well worth it if you want to have a date with your husband while here. You may want to call them and ck it out. I think there is a menu online.,,,ughhh, I can't recall the name of it. I have to find out. Anyways, it's amazing, but I am a foodie and cocktail person...I rather cycle than give up treats. Call way in advance for reservations if you look it over and decide to go. You're staying in a nice area. There's plenty of room to run by the water...it's gorgeous.

Jackie, I'll be sure to hook up with you then. I'm not sure what your near either. but we'll figure it out. I'll pass you my numbers tomorrow so you have them on hand.

I've been looking at the flights to SFO and it's expensive but I'm trying to convince myself it'll be better than driving 12 hours to get there and another 12 hours back (sore and tired).

I have no clue as far as hotels go, the Hyatt and the other race hotels are too expensive. I hope someone can give us some input on that.

Also, whats the deal with keychain medals for the half?? what does that mean??

There really is a lot more to consider when you are racing out of town...this will be a learning experience for all of us!!! Good thing we are on this early...I was surprised how quickly things filled up for Surf City...although we had the perfect motel and were luck to get it!!!

Elsa...you are definitely on my to do list!!! LOL!! My timeshare is located at 590 Bush, SF 91408 if you want to map it...we stayed there once before but for the life of me I can't remember what it's near...I know we walked to China Town!!!

Well, the hotel I booked for major $$$$ is right at the start, and racers get free shuttle back from the finish, but unfortunately, the start and finish of the half aren't in the same place. If my family wanted to cheer me on anywhere other than the start, they would be SOL without the pass, but $20 seems excessive for three stops, you know? I know the spectator pass will take them to the finish of the first half, and it might let them stop at mile 5/10(which seems like a good place to cheer on in the middle of the race, right by the Golden Gate), but nothing else really. And I doubt they are going to give me tips on how to not give them my $20. I thought maybe biking would work for them, but maybe not.

Jackie - The train is not only expensive, it takes FOREVER. I know H and I will probably stop a few places on the way there, and one the way back, so driving will work for us fine. I am still trying to figure everything out. For the cost of that room, I can stay in my favorite B&B - If we can get everything figured out, maybe we will only stay at that Hyatt Saturday night, and then stay out of town on Sunday.

i am not following what the bike or spectator pass if for...to get to the start? Biking in SF is not soo easy. I wouldn't recommend it if you have a race. It can be hilly...biking lanes are virtually non exisistant, there's a lot of tourist driving around who don't know where they are going...it could be dangerous. I road bike and wouldn't do it without being in a group to show me the ropes.

The link has maps...I would call someone as ask your questions about road closures. I imagine there's a contact number for such questions. I'm not sure if you are in the first half or second half. The first half starts in the Emabarcadero which has a fairy that goes there if you stay north of GGB. I have to ask around though. If this is your first race, and I also have never witnessed the race (that's right in my back yard LOL), you may be trading $ for peace of mind.

Jackie, do let me know when and where you are, I would love to drive out and meet you. If you are here a bit before, maybe I could show you around a bit...although, I'm not that familiar with SF...I HAVE A GARMIN b/c I kept getting lost going and coming from client appts LOL

gotta run for now...no pun intended. emoticon

Being that I booked the timeshare so far in advance I had to book a full week...I have it booked from Wednesday to Wednesday but will most likely fly up on Thursday night and fly back Sunday night or Monday morning!!!

I also looked at Amtrak but it wasn't cheap enough to deal with the time factor but with the price of gas the train might still be an option...might be fun if a bunch of us took it together!!!

I put Nike out of my mind since I'm running Long Beach as my first full the week before!!!

Timeshare! Awesome idea!

I ended up booking the Hyatt Embarcadero - I have until 3:00pm on Friday, 7/24 to cancel it. I figure we will be driving up, esp. because the flights are so much! Boooo!

I didn't really think this would be so pricey! I also wanted to do the Nike Women's Half in October, but maybe not... emoticon

Hey Ananda!!!

I reserved my timeshare for San Francisco which is .8 miles from the starting line so I'll most likely be walking!!! Not sure if Kenny is coming with me so I haven't thought any further than room and airfare!!!

I was checking airfare this morning and it is higher than I thought...cheapest round trip I found was $138 on Expedia.com and $156 on Southwest!!!

Are you flying or driving up???

I really want to book everything early so all I have to worry about is training!!!

The website is: www.runsfm.com/

I guess one of my biggest questions are how much of the roads are closed off! Like Surf City - they close PCH entirely from 2:00am - 2:00pm. I did find that a spectator bus pass will cost $20 per person (emoticon) which seems so pricey!!! I wonder if it would be cheaper to rent a bike. This is becoming my most expensive race by far - and I wanted to do the Nike Women's Half in October too... *sigh*

hmmm, I'm going to see if Jackie has input for you. I think she's done this one. I'm not sure where the race is? Could you post the link. I do have friends here that run, so I need to ask them questions about the bridge and when it closes etc.

I live about 15 mins. north of the GGBridge. There is an Embassy Suites etc....not many options but a few. 500 bucks seems high but probably not for SF. I'll ask around. If you have a Garmin or other GPS/Navigational device, bring it. I have one that gets me around everywhere and it does help me get around accurately.

Let's see if Jackie has suggestions of where to stay, if not, I'll be happy to inquire around here. I have a friend that does a lot of the marathons, etc. and I'm thinking he may be able to give me some advice and help. So, in other words, don't despair...we'll find out what you need to do a successful race and have fun with it!

Okay, I know some of you might have the same questions as I do! I posted this on a few sparkteams, so hopefully we will get some good feedback!

Has anyone done this race before? I am signed up for the first half, and I need to book a hotel room, logistics, etc. - everytime I have ever been in San Francisco, I have gotten hopelessly lost. emoticon

I was looking at the Race hotel and it is almost $500 for two nights! I am afraid to look for any other deal though, because I don't know how hard it is going to be to get to the race.

I am also wondering about my family and friends - since the half doesn't start and finish in the same place, will they be able to get around without a car?

Is there anything else that I am totally not thinking of?

Anyone who has run this race - have any insight for me? I am feeling like a fish out of water since this is the first race I will have run where I didn't know the area like the back of my hand.
