I too have taken my Reiki level 1 class in the Usui tradition. I found the class to be informative and rewarding. However, it is only the beginning. There are a lot of practices and information to process and incorporate. I find that the more I study the more there is to learn. It may only be my learning process but while I too have stumbled over access to the symbols I find that like complex medical terms they mean very little to me at this time. I focus on the basics I have been instructed in and find that for me that is enough. When I am ready I will return to my teacher and receive the attunements and symbols and then once again study and practice.

THESE ARE SOME REALLY GOOD ANSWERS.

I LIKE DIANE STEIN'S BOOK, A LITTLE HEAVY AND TECHNICAL IN PLACES BUT I USE IT MORE AS A TEXTBOOK FOR REIKI.

CAN ANYONE SAY WHAT TYPE OF EXPERIENCES THEY HAVE WITH THE DIFFERENT SYMBOLS. I MOST USE JUST TWO.

THANKS,

I think the reason they are considered "sacred" is that there is a certain amount of self-care and respect that goes into wanting to be a more balanced person and since Reiki is about balance that is an important factor. Someone who isn't willing to do the work so to speak, that is just looking for a quick fix, should not have access to something that is more deep and meaningful than they are willing to go into. I do think Reiki should be available to anyone who wishes to use it, but those who are using it tend to be those who are interested in being balanced and whole.

Live to impress yourself.
Blessed be.

I had Diane Stein's book, too, and the symbols didn't really register with me. I don't care who sees them, or lineage. You can tell if people are good by just feeling it

Everyone has the right to use the healing power of the Reiki symbols-maybe we should do practices daily or at least weekly. What do you say?

I don't think the symbols in and of themselves are sacred. I think it's the intend of the practitioner that fuses with the universal force and gives the symbols their power. I am a Reiki master but I feel that everyone has access to the energy...knowledge and intention infuses the energy and turns it to power.

Exactly but not pertaining to any religion -its more like the universal poer is one and the symbols should be a marker of that .

I too am a Usui Reiki Master Teacher and have to agree completely with everyone else. When I took my first reiki course the first symbol was given to me that day. I thought that was how it was suppose to be. I have been practicing reiki for over a year now and have just started teaching a friend. She wanted to learn and I needed practicing in teaching. I too gave her the first symbol. Wish I had read this first. She has been trying to rush to get her Master level and I have been slowing her down and telling her to practice and then practice some more. I do believe she will be more appreciative in the long run.

One thing that really bothers me is someone who says attunements can be done long distance and that they do not need to pay a bunch of money for a certificate to do reiki. They criticized me because I wouldn't open a reiki business before I had reached my masters level and said the certificate meant nothing. It was sad that I couldn't make her understand, it wasn't the certificate, but the experience, attunements, guidance and practice that I needed. The actual hands on with a reiki teacher. I feel I have lost a friend over this....really sad. But I have made several new ones here!

Peace all,
Terry

I'm so glad to find this group and to see this discussion. I also honor the Usui tradition of waiting until students are ready at the second degree to pass on the symbols. They are so sacred and powerful, not to be taken lightly or handled as just a little hobby.

This idea also fits in with the notion I have come across about teaching people Reiki in an evening + half day session or less. The argument for this is that people are very busy and nobody is going to take the time to spend a whole weekend to get a degree. Quick demonstrations are given along with handouts and that is about it. Then students are encouraged to go to Reiki shares to get practice. I really question this notion of bending the traditions of Reiki teaching so much to this fast-paced culture or ours. We can learn so much if we step outside of our own cultural and truly try to learn Reiki at its various levels- spiritual, mental, emotional and physical. I believe there is not a lot of responsibility taken for the students on the part of the Masters in this way of teaching. As a Master teacher I have a responsibility for the quality of Reiki being practiced. It seems that too much of what isn't Reiki, ( and yes, other healing practices have their own validity) is then being put out there as Reiki, watering down the perception of what Reiki is and causing confusion out in the world. That doesn't help the cause of building understanding and respect for Reiki and its traditions. The focus cannot be on trying to get as many students as possible in order to meet a financial quota. Students need to be brought to Reiki with respect for it's power, tradition and love and the way of life and thinking it represents.

I know this is a strong opinion and I am always open to listening to others. It is good to be in a group where we can help each other achieve our goals for health and balance with the understanding and application of the special love embodied in the power of Reiki.

Glad this discussion is happening about the sacred symbols of Reiki; I love Reiki and I love my teacher; going through the attunments and the whole experience of the course is something to be treasured. I feel the experience of receiving them when ready should not be taken lightly; I also feel that they come when the the student is ready to handle the energy of them. I yearn to get back into some regular Reiki exchanges! It's been too long!

My husband and I are Reiki Master/Teachers in the Usui system, also. I think one must be attuned to the symbols for them to be effective. Since Reiki can do no harm, I don't think there is a danger with unattuned people knowing the symbols. But, until I was actually taught about them and attuned to use them, they held very little meaning for me. I also believe in respecting traditions, so, we allow no students to have the symbols before Level II. I don't have fits if they do see them; they are posted all over the internet and are in a lot of books. I'm sure a lot of people see them before they actually should. I can't police other's behavior, but I advise them to leave it alone!
Linda

Heather,
I'm so happy to read your words. I joined this team a while ago but did not participate because I was not attuned and did not feel I could follow the conversations. Last weekend I was attuded at Reiki 1 level with an individual who has impressive lineage and everything you are saying is in keeping with what I learned from her. There were 4 attunements and no symbols given. She recommended that we practice daily for several months before considering a move to Reiki 2 level so we could become accustomed to the energy. Additionally, we learned that if Master Reiki level is in our future (if we would like to teach Reiki) we should expect a year of intensive training with a good Reiki Master.

I returned here today to participate in the team but realize that there is alot of misunderstanding about the levels, the attunements and what happens at the various levels. Last year I searched online for a course and found a couple of online courses. I actually signed up for one and received a book full of symbols and instructions but realized that something was wrong. I'm glad I waited.

It seems there are alot of people who believe they are practicing Reiki but who are really playing a kind of game, not that there is anything wrong with that, it is just that there is a difference between "being" and "doing" and it takes some time and practice to know the difference. Maintaining silence and respecting tradition requires some maturity. I believe these things cannot be rushed.

I use the analogy of the car and the teenager, when it comes to things like the Reiki Symbols. I'm completely unattuned, and yet have studied reiki on and off for a few years now. As curious as I am about the symbols, I haven't trained in Reiki, and so I wouldn't know what to do with them, or whether I'd use them incorrectly. It probably wouldn't be dangerous to use a symbol incorrectly, or without training, but your reiki attempt would be fruitless.

As for my analogy: I was given a stick-shift when I was a teenager. I knew how to drive, but I did not know how to drive stick- no one taught me. So the car just rusted away in the driveway, it was there, but unusable. That's how the symbols would be to someone who knows them, but isn't ready to use them yet.

I know I am late in answering but here are my thoughts.

I am a Master Teacher of the Usui Tibetan tradition and it was taught to me that there are no symbols given until Reiki Level II.

I am honor bound to maintain the tradition the way it came to me. I think to often now that people are adding their own flair to it and then it is no longer the tradition. I call that knock off Reiki...Do I think it's less effective, not necessarily, but I disagree with them calling it Usui Tibetan. Even Stein has symbols that are not correct to Usui.

The Asian culture as a rule are so rich with tradition and I feel it is really important to honor that and the gift of Reiki.

So I can say that no student of mine will be given the symbols before it's time. Sorry for the rant.

Be well
Heather

i agree. the symbols are supposed not to have any power unless a practioner is attuned to them. i had diane stein's book before i took my first class so had access to the symbols a long time until being attuned to Reiki 2. that's when they came alive and had meaning to me.
we should always treat the symbols with respect and dignity.

Personally, I don't think that it necessarily harms anything, but I do believe in sticking with traditions. I felt honored to be able to use unknown symbols when I was attuned at Reiki2. I understand the dilemna of those who want to stay Reiki1 and have no plans to move onto Reiki2.
