Wow! Is it really the end of year six?

My participation has been on and off, I suppose like many people.

I'm doing well with my current goals, although they're much adjusted from my original goals as I gained weight over the last few years.

Hope everyone is well!

OOH! Hoping no surgery! Zumba is a great workout. Once you adapt to the instructor and figure out their routine, it will be a snap.

I think the Holy Land would be a great trip. Heading to South Korea in September to visit a friend in the Army. She is stationed there for a year, so I have a place to stay. She said there are a lot of places to hike, so I should have an active vacation.

We all have stories to tell about our husbands don't we. I wonder what they say about us.

So how's everyone doing. I have been busy with work and saving up to go on a pilgrimage trip to the Holy Land next March. going with a girlfriend and sure there will be others that we know going as well. My walking has improved greatly since hip surgery but I am dealing with a problematic knee on the opposite side now. I see the specialist about the knees at the end of August. Hope I don't have to go through knee replacement surgery. I have been going to Zumba dance classes - I can get some of the moves but the footwork and legwork is still pretty tricky for me. I just do what I can and try to keep up with the fast pace. I still have weight loss issues - my body shape has changed but the scale does not seem to go down in pounds. Oh well, at least I feel good.

LOL on the slobby husband; hope your eye is better so you can get your surroundings like you like them. My husband never dries his hands after washing them and treats all sinks like he's a hot, dirty bird at a birdbath so I always have to deal with often invisible water on railings, countertops, etc. Hate putting the bag of sugar or cardboard box of dishwasher detergent on the kitchen counter only to find it was wet. Then there's reaching into the gel pacs of dishwasher detergent to find them all stuck together because he didn't dry his hands when doing the dishes before getting one to put in the dishwasher. . . :-)

Yes - and no exercise or housecleaning for a week. The cleaning part is driving me nuts! I was out of town a good bit over the last 2 weeks and my husband is a slob. Vision is pretty good (according to the doc this morning). Since I can't do anything, I think I will sit on the porch and listen to music. At least I won't have to look at the dirty house!

Feeling the need for some support! I have cataract surgery in the morning. Just got back from taking care of my sister after her hernia surgery and it is just now hitting me. Trying hard not to stress eat!

I tried melatonin and it gave me a weird hangover, not too bad but didn't do enough to help anything and scared me some.

I've tried melatonin and found it did not make much of a difference for me. I usually wake up in the night cause I have to change position, then I decide I have to get up to go to the bathroom.

Have you tried melatonin to help you sleep? I know folks that swear by it. Check with your doc first if you are on other meds.

I had never heard of Trager, that sounds interesting.

I was sent to physical therapists once for my neck/arm a few years ago for 3+ months but it didn't do much. Now we did the xray and know I have arthritis so probably why.

I've been getting better sleep this last few weeks and I don't know why for that either; I had been getting up in the middle of the night and going downstairs I either hurt too much or had too much going on in my head :-) I only wake once now usually and that's okay, I may have a little trouble getting back to sleep but I do eventually.

I don't remember the last time I had to get up for a bit until the pain was less or I was sleepy enough again, etc. Something good must be happening or maybe it's just the better sleep; sometimes I wish it were easier to figure out but then I'd have nothing to experiment with or complain about, LOL.

Oh yes, definitely. I go to a chiropractor who gives me a one hour treatment - he is an older guy that does mainly massage and ends treatment with an adjustment at the head/neck. I also have a Trager practitioner that I go to when I need a 'fix'. Trager is like massage but they do not use oils. Those are my rewards.

So far so good with my eyes. I think it would be weird having eye surgery cause you can see what is going on. Would make me nervous for sure. Hope it goes well for you Deni.
I was at physio this morning - put 10 lbs on my right ankle and 7 lbs on my left during the muscle stimulator exerciser. Don't know that I'll go much higher than that as I was kinda sore this afternoon - and tired! I also used the NuStep machine for ten minutes so that probably was a big workout for me.

Glad you are doing well! Hopefully you will be able to exercise more easily now.

Looking at cataract surgery next month - getting old stinks (but it beats the alternative!)!

Hello Margo and Deni,
Well I guess we are now into year six - can't say that I've gotten very far with the weight loss, but I do notice a big change in my body shape. I have lost some inches and I think that is pretty important. The best thing I have done is to have had a total right hip replacement. This was done on February 25th so I am well on my way to a full recovery. I have just returned back to work and am getting back into the crazy kind of life that I had prior to surgery. It is getting so much easier for me to get around now. I have gone back to the exercise club since last week and am hoping to get out for some walks soon. I am still using a cane until my balance and gait are closer to normal.
I am grateful to have the Spark People teams and friends for all the support and encouragement. Hoping that we all do well this year, getting closer to our goals. Good luck!

Well, 2 more days until I start year 6. I'm starting my new program early, just erased all my data to "start over" yesterday.

Yes, I still want to get around well and losing some of this weight will help that. I'm not into cosmetic surgery though, not into any surgery at all now after what happened with my asthma last/first time. I'll just have to see how much muscle I can built back, now that I don't have the help of much estrogen.

Well, Phyllis Diller and Joan Rivers prove you can get cosmetic surgery at any age (although they should stop and donate the surgeon's services to those less fortunate)!

Regardless of the skin issues, your joints will thank you! I have far fewer ankle aches since losing the 45 pounds - a lot of weight for a short, small boned person (28% of my starting body weight).

Yes, I'm getting most frustrated due to age-related, chronic stuff. Can't "go" as you say. I can't even decide to lose a lot of weight anymore, my body wouldn't like that since the skin is no longer elastic and I'm too old for full body cosmetic make overs, etc. It's very hard to stay positive some days.

I have definitely learned a lot about nutrition and exercise - much to my husband's dismay! Since he gained weight and was found to have high cholesterol, he gets constant lessons.

I still struggle with maintenance and have to fight to keep from slowly backsliding to the beer and fries diet I consumed before SP. I do enjoy exercise much more that I thought I would, but the slowdown due to the hip issues is a bit depressing at times. Some days I don't want to exercise because I can't just GO. But, I have learned from experience - and SparkPeople - that committing to just 10 minutes will get me in the mood to finish.

Mostly, I have learned how much the support of others means in an uphill battle - whether they are pushing, pulling, or cheering. You have all been greatly appreciated!

I know we all planned to be where we wanted by the end of year 1 :-) but how are you doing now that we've had 5 years on SparkPeople and are starting year 6?

Even if it had only been good for its social aspects, I still think being a member here this long has benefited my life. I am more knowledgeable about food, diet, exercise and my body and feel more secure in myself and my knowledge of myself from having been here. I have good friends I've only met online as well as some I've met in person, etc. Membership has been valuable to me in ways other than I anticipated in April of 2008, when I joined.

Minor disasters keep life interesting - or at least that's what I tell myself. Our new dog has learned to open the partition to the exercise room. Our old dog chews and has developed a taste for DVDs and CDs. Fortunately, after trying to eat one and getting really sick, he has decided to only chew the covers off now.

Ah, MaryBeth, big changes in your life! Exciting and scary all at once? Keep us informed.

We keep having minor disasters; last week it was the car (and then the rental got a flat :-) and one cat to the ER vet then the other cat to the regular vet over the weekend (first time they've gone in 4 years; too hard to catch on "demand"/scheduled time for office visit) only to find she was riddled with fleas and had a nasty allergic reaction, thank goodness, or we wouldn't have known we had fleas! The other cat "started" it I think but he's non-sensitive; I got enough flea dirt off him to form another whole cat out of fleas/flea dirt.

DH suggested it's time to get a weekly house cleaner so I found a company and they came out yesterday to do an estimate, will call today to decide when to do the initial, deep cleaning.

Oh, I'm so sorry; that sounds awful, reminds me of my arm back when I was doing Curves and their fixed machines wrecked it and I needed 3 months physical therapy and lots of pain meds. Some days I despaired of ever feeling okay again.

My weight is up as well. I usually do my 'official' weight on Friday morning since Friday evening is 'date night' and we usually eat out.

I love the advances in computers. With the new ipads and other small personal devices, we look like Trekkies! I especially love Skype since the grandbaby is 4 hours away.

I appear to have gained weight rather than lost last week but I'm putting off "official" weighing until next Monday at the earliest. This whole mother's day party and procrastinating about cleaning the house thing has me bummed. Just a couple more days and I should feel more relaxed and maybe by then the weather will be acting more consistent too and life will be good :-)

I got rid of my really old computer last year :-) but had already gotten 99% of my stuff on here but now this computer is getting pretty old and my stuff on here is so messy I don't know that I ever could change over again.

It is so interesting and weird to me to just think about the last 25 years? I got my first modem in 1991, seems like only yesterday and all there was was CompuServe and a bunch of BBS's and text. I find it funny that we go from texting on computer modems to Microsoft making Windows and graphics and so we can go to texting on phones? I still remember when computer software was only compatible with brands, not all computers and now we have phone wars. Who would have thought? And computer were so "new" and scary and interesting and now we get new applications and it is all ho-hum.

So jealous - I am eligible as of May 23, but can not afford to retire yet.

I am trying to fight off menopausal weight creep. I am also dancing as much as possible and back to working on my genealogy project (funny how I keep running into others with similar interests). It is on my REALLY old computer, so I can not just download it to Ancestry.

Dancing as often as I can. I'm in a showcase in May and a competition in July. More of that to follow. Also working on videos which I post on You Tube. Lots of fun. I love retirement!
