Oh my goodness. 4 years and still not much progress for me. I guess it just takes as long as it takes to get to where I want to be!

I went to the local hair cuttery and the result wasn't exactly what I was looking for but will do; I'm glad to get all that heavy, long stuff out of my face, especially at night on my pillow when I'm trying to get to sleep and turn over.

Well, tomorrow we head into our 4th anniversary month(s)!

Margo, a new hairstyle might be just the thing to make you feel good. Please post a picture. My eating habits will be out of whack this weekend as I have a client that I will be out with both Saturday and Sunday. It is maple syrup festival tomorrow so pancakes for lunch and then I will be taking her out for supper too, before going to a musical show at the playhouse. On Sunday afternoon I am taking her to a Jamboree and there is a ham and scallop potatoe dinner at that event. Well, maybe I will get enough exercise while out and about - hoping anyway!

I'm going out to get my hair cut, semi-traumatic; haven't had it cut since December 2010. I'm not going to my old hairdresser I was going to (cancelled my May 2010 appointment and never rescheduled), just going to do the local Hair Cuttery so the whole hair cutting "thing" I have will have to be worked on again this coming year I guess.

Tonight we have our usual pizza night (I have a salad, it's actually a good "Italian" restaurant and there are some better/healthier choices than pizza :-) the first we've had since we went away the end of January. Will be good getting into that routine. However, we're celebrating our granddaughter's 8th birthday tomorrow (it was actually last weekend but we didn't get home in time to celebrate then) and she wants to go to the same restaurant (but near their house, not ours; they were going to come out here, deja vu :-) so I'll have to choose well tonight so I don't feel bored tomorrow. We'll stop by the Target before we go to the restaurant and get her gift daughter-in-law cued us to.

So, this weekend is a little busy starting today. I'm having a little trouble with my asthma again and perhaps my thyroid med (hard to get up in the morning sometimes). I think I need more exercise and getting out; at least I can do that today and tomorrow.

Seems like everyone has had craziness in their lives. I plan on getting plenty of rest this weekend and trying to get back on track - but mostly getting the rest!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Wow. I've been living with a crazy schedule and it is hard to maintain a regular routine. It's good to keep busy I suppose. Just having a hard time fitting in regular exercise that would bring my heart rate up. I've been trying to cut back on my food intake, or eat the proper foods that should help me lose weight. But, I still am travelling on a yo yo weigh in at TOPS - up one week, down the next. Maybe a weekly weigh-in is not the greatest idea in the world. It sure does get me discouraged at times.

Gee - time really flies.

Been off lately. My father in law slipped into a coma, making a trip to NY necessary. He passed while we were there. I ended up in the emergency room right after we returned - our overly excited dog accidentally knocked me out and injured my eye while greeting me. Add one wedding, a house closing, and hot flashes - it's a wonder I haven't just moved into the Cheesecake Factory refrigerator! (The smallest piece on the menu had 840 calories)

Things should settle down now and I can get back on track. My weight is up a bit, but I will just jump back into my routine and hope to be back to normal soon.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Margo, I hope you are better soon so you can enjoy the rest of your vacation time.
It is Lent now so I am going to be more conscious of what and how much I eat and try to exercise more. By Easter maybe I will have established a new healthier routine.

I have a week left on my vacation. I've been sick the last one and a half with a horrible sore throat; will probably have to go to the doctor's when I get back and get antibiotics. But my energy is coming back a bit so I don't feel so washed out; not fun feeling washed out on a vacation. We've found great places to eat but haven't really "done" anything; a lot of reading, which I've enjoyed but. . .

Getting some help from the chiropractor for my aches and pains.
Feeling rather tired today. I was out late last night at a parish valentine dance. I actually was able to get up and do some dancing without pain.

MaryBeth, hope you're feeling better. Boo, know you'll enjoy the kitchen work being done; I'd like to trash mine and start over but don't think DH would go for the expense so I guess I'll try for a new dishwasher next (mine is cheap and the inside racks are all rusted/broken, etc.).

Florida is okay but still overcast and rainy. Today's clearing (finally) should last for 4-5 days though. Warm isn't bad; I think they had snow up at home.

I haven't gotten any of my projects I wanted to work on here started though. I'm eating okay when I eat out but too much junk here at the cottage (chips and stuff). I had some mysterious aches and pains that were plaguing me but now think was too much vitamin D so I quit that pill for a few days; hopefully when the sun comes out I can get 20+ minutes in it each day and get some naturally that way.

I have recovered, thanks. I am going to my chiropractor tomorrow, probably for an assessment to see what she can do for my arthritic knees, hip and lower back.
It is nice to hear from people on this team. Take care everyone.

Haven't been on for awhile because we're having some work done on the house. Unfortunately, the kitchen was out of commission for a few days so it was easier to grab a bite to eat out. I did manage to lose 2 lbs since my last weigh in so I'm hoping to get back on track now that the kitchen is done. Margo, enjoy your time in Florida - I love the idea of watching the boats go by. And MaryBeth, I hope you've recovered from your fall.

Hope your aches and pains have faded!

We're in Florida, it has been overcast and has rained a couple times since we've been here but it's warm and we're settled in and comfortable. The Internet appears to only want one person at a time on it or it slows way down and I'm first up so. . .

Have a good trip Margo.
I did manage to have a .6 weight loss at Tuesday's weigh-in so I must be doing something right.
Today I was at work and for some crazy reason, while I was just walking to go get something off the table, I managed to trip over my own shoes and feet and landed on the floor. Boy it really hurt and I was so embarrassed. A fellow in wheelchair with strong upper muscles who was right there lent me his hand to help me get back up on my feet. I went and sat down and put ice pack on to prevent any swelling. Tonight I feel sore - better go get some Tylenol into me!

MaryBeth, so sweet of you to help your client with her fries because there were too many! emoticon LOL

I saw the doctor for my quarterly checkup on Wednesday which went well; he wants to do a full physical (check heart, EKG; lungs, pulmonary; etc.) when we go again in April. I'm determined to lose 5% of my weight by then and address a couple other issues. For the Florida vacation for February, I've decided I'm going to live on fish since we eat dinner out so much. I do not make it at home since (a) don't really know how/the mess & potential for smell and (b) DH does not like it or only very very occasionally, battered and fried, preferably with more batter than fish :-) That and calves liver (I'm getting my B12 tested in April, he's thinking it might be a problem).

Other than that, I'm going to walk each morning with my coffee, we will be in a great place to do it, equi-distant from the Intercoastal Waterway (sit and watch the boats go by) and the Ocean.

Right now though I'm both procrastinating and panicking at so much to do by 10:30 Monday morning. Not a good combo!

I ordered a salad with blueberries, feta cheese and chicken, which came with flatbread tonight. Then I ate a few of my client's fries as there were too many for her. And, when I got home my husband had made a meal so I tried a little bit of the Polynesian Sausage and rice.
Well, I am trying to be more conscious but it is hard to resist the temptation of food all around me!

I have a couple of years before I can order the senior portions. I have tried since they are smaller portions and I don't usually eat a lot, but most places say "Sorry." Works better if I haven't just dyed my hair and the gray roots are showing!

Glad you have an incentive program. I keep trying to start one, but that gets sidelined even more than my exercising!

Thanks Deni.
I guess I am doing OK. I had weigh in tonight at TOPS and was down .6 Sometimes I have been having supper before I go weigh in but last week and this week I waited till later to eat. Maybe that is better for me. I do have a motivational project going though - a little gift box to hold onto for 4 weeks that will get me a nice gift if I am successful at having a loss each week and attend the meetings. Plus we just started a loser lotto game - can fill in a square with my name each week that I have a loss so more chances to win when all 50 squares are complete.
I was good today at the restaurant during my school lunch break - I chose the senior's fish and chips with veggies rather than coleslaw and used no butter, there was no dinner roll served with it either and a senior portion is smaller than regular so not too many fries. That's a start!

I'm having a tough time with food now. I have 3 clients that I take on outings and most times it involves a meal so I find I am eating at restaurants much more than I normally would. These are fairly new job positions I have and I do love the outings because of the social aspect, but am finding that it is costing me money in order to make money. Oh well, what's a person to do? eventually I will find a way to not have to eat every time I take these individuals out I suppose.

Sounds like we all have challenges right now! Longer daylight hours are coming and that will help out - puts me in a MUCH better mood and gives me higher energy levels.

I have been making home made soups and chili a lot lately. When I have time, I make home made bread to go with it. I found that my weight goes down better when I eat home made rather than processed food - even if I consume the same number of calories.

I motivated myself to go to the fitness club yesterday - did the whole 30 minute circuit then 6 minutes on the vibrating machine. Today I was in school all day so not much exercise. We have an hour lunch break - I went to a Pizza Hut buffet. Not the best choice but was really good. My weigh in was better tonight - starting to go back down again. Now I have an incentive - a little gift box that I can only keep if I lose every week for 4 weeks and attend TOPS meetings - if successful I will get a 'real' gift prize. Wish me luck. This is the 3rd time my name has been drawn and I have yet to be fully successful.

Deni, be careful! I decided I did not like falling :-) back Christmas Eve 2010 when I fell on my face and knee, broke my nose, needed stitches and felt like I broke my knee (fell on the exact same spot I'd fallen 35 years previously) but only made it really unhappy. But now I can't watch "America's Funniest Videos" on TV without thinking most of the falls and accidents aren't very funny.

I'm recovered from my cold and learning a lot with my blood pressure trials; I felt so bad and was on meds such that coffee went by the wayside and I wasn't eating much so I decided to do a week or two of no caffeine, sugar, or alcohol and see what my blood pressure did. As I have started feeling better, my bp has started to rise a little, which was interesting; I am now thinking it is the added food (was less hungry for awhile and ate mostly fruit, vegetable soup, etc.), especially the hidden salt. I got into easier to prepare foods for dinner and stuff my husband could make us (until he caught the cold and got as sick as I had been :-) But, that's what I wanted to see, it's obviously not so easy as just caffeine, sugar, and alcohol.

I feel well enough to re-instate my walking practice so when I go to Florida next month I'll be comfortable walking on the beach.

Thanks for the encouragement! the past couple of months have been hard. I fell running last Feb and then - as soon as I was back to normal - took a bad spill on my bike in October. Still achy and out of whack. Hoping to get back to normal by warmer weather!

Motivation to exercise is difficult for me during the cold, dreary days. It gets dark so early and I want to sleep. I have been doing 10-20 minutes of yoga before my workout and it seems to energize me. We will see how it goes!

I can relate - it is hard to get motivated to do workouts. I wonder if playing music takes off any calories. Today I had a funeral to play organ for, then a children's choir practise tonight followed by a practise with the weekend cantor. I spent time getting organized too this morning, and practising piano at home for all my musical adventures of this day.

Another rainy day here, off and on, but at least no snow. Supposed to get colder the next few days and windy. I stayed on track with my food today - still haven't gotten motivated to start working out again. That's the hardest part for me, just getting started. Hope everyone has a great evening!

Hope you're feeling better, Margo! Rainy day here in VA - every time I looked out the window at work, I was wishing I was home curled up with a book or watching a good movie. Oh well, it's Wednesday and the weekend is in sight!

Hope you are on the mend Margo. It is not fun being sick.
I was back to school today - we had to attend a workshop on "Bridges Out of Poverty". - a real eye opener. I had attended this workshop a few years ago, so it was not all new information. Their "Circles" program seems to be beneficial to anyone that wants to make life better for themselves.

I have been really sick the last week and that has got me re-energized (finally :-) today and on the right track so I'm with you all! I'll weigh myself in a couple days, see what that is doing with having eaten lightly and well the last 3-4 days and lots of liquids and a few other good things "started" again, even if against my will emoticon

Let's do it, Mary Beth! I have a group of ladies at work who I'm 'dieting' with. They got a head start on me, but it's never too late to start.

I too want to start with mini goals. I was down to 197 lbs a couple months ago so that is my first goal - to get back down to that (5 lbs to lose).

First weigh in day since I got back on Sparkpeople - lost 1/2 lb. A little disappointing but not really unexpected. I need to start working out and walking, as well as watching what I eat. My first mini-goal is to get below 200 lbs.

Yes, I have been doing some tracking here and there too to keep myself honest.

I borrowed a cold from somewhere, a couple days ago so I'm not doing much of anything but resting and drinking plenty of liquids. I was doing some walking daily so when I get to Florida next month I'll be ready for the beach but this has side-lined me for a few days. We have bitter cold too so I'm only getting my walking doing chores/shopping when I have to.

Tomorrow's my weigh-day. I started the week (and the year) off pretty slow as far as watching what I eat. But I did start tracking all my food so I can at least see how much junk I'm eating. Just seeing that made me eat a little healthier each day so we'll see if there's any progress yet tomorrow morning.

Trying to get back on track. Spent most of November sick (stomach bug, respiratory infection, ANOTHER respiratory infection), then my husband had surgery and I spent a week keeping the grandbaby while the daycare was closed. I feel SO far off track! But, I started Spark in much worse shape (more than 40 pounds heavier), so I will just have to work it!

I've been away for awhile, and I've gained my weight back so I'm starting over. It's good to see some familiar names here. I wished I'd stuck with it from the beginning, but it's not too late to start again. Beginning tomorrow, I'll be tracking my nutrition daily, starting a dumbbell routine and will try to walk each day. Wish me luck and keep me in your thoughts and prayers please emoticon

Is this really the fourth year? Geez. I don't know how all of you are doing but I think I am finally getting somewhere. I decided to go for it ant it has been great this month (yes, after 4 years it took this particular December to get motivated enough). So, I just wanted to check in and hope that y'all are doing great. Peace.

Yes, congrats on the grandchild; what fun (for you, having babies isn't particularly fun at that moment :-)

We've been having internet problems all morning; lots of rain went through yesterday and today is really windy and the river is acting up, halfway to our steps in the bottom yard.

QUENNEVILLE - congrats on the grandbaby! I think they are the best invention EVER!

Made it through the Komen breast cancer run this past weekend. Ended up putting a lot of miles on the shoes walking back and forth to the car (3 round trips x 1 mile per trip), running (3.1 miles), and more walking (app 3 miles) when I finished running and walked back to join my walking friends at the halfway point. It was a lovely day and a great cause.

Yes, I hit the Kit Kats a bit too hard yesterday so couldn't breathe well all night, I'm all congested and itchy; like I need more proof that sugar and inferior chocolate aren't good for you? LOL. I hope it wanders away this morning; it's raining and perfect day for a nap.

Prizes sound like a good option.
The health fair went over very well in my small town. There were 25 vendors and 100 people attended throughout the day. They might have to find a bigger location to hold it at next year. This was the first year they had this in Petrolia. I brought home some information - there were some speakers throughout the day as well. Lots of options available - just need to find whatever works for me.
I might not be home for Halloween. My daughter is expecting a baby and is due Oct. 28th so I will be spending some time with her. She is 2 hours away from where I live.

Haven't bought any candy yet - I know I will eat some! I always bring my leftover candy in and put out for any students that might want to snack. We don't have too many students these days, so I was wondering if the local food bank would take any. I could get the little packets of raisins and other healthy items. I had thought about buying a bunch of 'prizes' instead (halloween themed pencils, bouncy balls, finger puppets). What do you think?

How was the fair, MaryBeth? I've always wanted to go to a health fair but then never bother as I can't have my blood pressure taken comfortably by an arm cuff like everyone uses (registers very high because of the pain; is "accurate" but not from a "resting"/normal point of view) and I don't have any of the other chronic stuff or worries.

I just had my Halloween candy delivered (all my food with Peapod.com); that should be interesting, whether I can stay out of it enough until then/after. I bought enough for 200 kids probably and we only get 25-30 max.

I will be going to a health fair this Saturday. Looking forward to trying out some of the treatments. I may be manning the TOPS booth for a little while too.
Just won a family entertainment package from a free draw at the local fair. Lots of snack foods in it - husband and I split them up - I know I should not eat this stuff but hey I don't normally buy this junk so I'll just treat myself a little bit at a time. Some of the things will go to kids/grandkids.

Yes, MaryBeth, I'm having trouble with the aches and pains and difficulties of being older too and trying to lose weight; I've adapted some of my goals for that -- don't want to be a 65-70 year old with really baggy skin, LOL.

I haven't heard from Shellpro for a long time; hope she's okay, just busy with her health concerns.

Calories: Nasty little critters that live in your closet and take in your clothes at night while you sleep.

Age makes you 'sticky' as far as calories are concerned. When I was 20, I could eat a pan of brownies and see no effects. Now, I just look at a small brownie and my butt gets bigger! Being vigilant is sometimes a pain, but I like my new clothes!

Glad you are both doing well. I have been concerned about Shellpro. Anyone been in touch with her?

Good to hear from you Margo and Deni.
I haven't lost much more yet. Just trying to get back down to what my lowest weight was back in August for now. It sure is hard work to lose weight - I think my age and my arthritis and against me somehow. At least I am a happy person though!

Let us know, Deni! Sounds good.

Tracking can be hard but I pretty much have all my own foods in there so it doesn't take me too long. Does bore me, being so predictable :-)

I lost 3-4 pounds on vacation; I'll have to go to foreign countries and walk too much more often!

I don't use the tracker on Spark. I find just writing it down on paper is helpful. Takes too long for me to find all food items on the tracker.

I sometimes log daily but usually after breakfast and then I put in what I'm "planning" for dinner and my snacks, etc. but I can run into resistance from myself when I run out of food available/left on the tracker, will start adding things and get over my limit.

I have been journalling my food intake almost every day. Seems to help me figure out when I am eating too much or the wrong foods. My weight tends to yo yo from week to week. I hope to get this under control soon so that the weight can start to fall off and stay off.

London - how nice! I am too jealous!

I am trying to be better about logging my food. I tried logging at the end of the day rather than throughout and my weight started drifting up. So, I am making sure that I put it on the list as soon as I eat (love the phone app). Exercise has been slower since I fell in Feb, but the past week or so I have been able to get in a 30 min run. Hopefully I will be good to go for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on October 15.

We're coming up on half-way through our 4th year! How's everyone doing?

I'm going to London for two weeks here next week and am concentrating on getting ready for that most of this month. I'll be curious how this trip impacts my life. Could be a good thing with the additional walking I'm expecting and the scheduling (being retired I don't have a schedule anymore) and being immersed in things I enjoy.

No, I don't have a church here. I'm sure there are things I "could" do but it's getting harder to want to do them as I've done or rejected them already in my previous life :-) I like being retired but it is a big change as a lot of "automatic" motivation goes away. I don't "have to" do anything, like go to work or go anywhere, could sit around in my pajamas and rot all day if I chose, LOL. The things that interested me as a younger woman aren't that "important" or easy anymore or I've been there/done that and am running out of things to try that might interest me.

It's not menopause that women should worry about; it's the surprises 2-3 years later when all the hormones "disappear" that cause changes that make life "interesting".

Are you active in a church? Often many activities in small communities (at least here in SC) are centered at the local churches. A number of churches (especially African-American) have started working on health issues. Years ago, our church back home started a class for women that encompassed diet, exercise, and (of course) Bible study of various issues pertaining to women.

Wow, I feel bad for you Margo. I live in such a friendly small town and there is lots of stuff to do here. I do hope you figure something out as I hate to see you sit around not doing anything. I guess maybe retirement can really suck if you are not living in a place where you can find enjoyment.
Take care.

I haven't found anything to do around here that I would like to do enough to get over the barrier of distance. The local senior center doesn't have any interesting classes; I've been to the junior college but the last class I signed up for there, an interesting genealogy class was cancelled because of lack of interest. It's a working class county instead of a "professional" one like the one we moved from; less expensive, why we moved here to retire, but that comes with a price. I'm still shocked about the library. I was taking online college courses and went to research Franz Schubert, the eighteenth/nineteenth century musician, wanted just a kind of overview and my branch had nothing at all about music! No Bach or Beethoven even. I don't know how this county's children manage in life :-)

I thought about the animal shelter but it's a 45 minute drive, all the way on the other side of the county and I can't see "working" at getting there. The volunteer activities in this county are coordinated by a single entity; I tried that when I first came here and that didn't work as I would like. You can't just find something, enjoy it and ask to volunteer, you get screened first and I got screened but then they give you 5-6 names of places they think you would like and the opportunities are a bit lame too being a working class and rural county. I called a few places but nothing happened. I tried the gardening club here, too, but they just kept inviting me to business meetings in the middle of winter, at night! I had trouble getting motivated to go out in the cold and dark after dinner for that :-)

I was all excited back in November/December; I found a good fencing club with lots of classes, etc. and I took fencing in college but then I fell and wrecked my knee Christmas Eve and that with my gross obesity/unfitness/lack of arm strength kind of rules that out; I can barely stand for any period of time, hate to walk, I can't see doing thrusts/lunges for more than about a minute and a half. I am afraid to try anything "organized" like that; I tried tai chi 10 years ago and bombed with that. I have a friend who just opened a yoga school/classes but won't even try that (other than nothing to wear) as it's a bit of a distance and he has no/few students and I'd be embarrassed to show up and be by myself and it isn't something I can see myself wanting to do that much.

Well, enough of what I can't do emoticon I'll figure out something.

I agree with taking a dance class or volunteering. I made a lot of new friends when I started bellydancing. There are also groups around for contra dancing, line dancing, etc. And, don't knock the senior center - you can join ours as young as 50. I often see groups from the center walking or jogging in the mornings of my days off.

Our animal shelter is constantly begging for folks to help exercise the animals. The hospitals need volunteers to make deliveries and help escort people. If you are want something physical you could try Habitat for Humanity. These would be a great way to meet people and get some activity into your routine.

The only restrictions any of us have in life are those we place on ourselves.

What do you like to do Margo?
If you like dancing, may I suggest belly dancing. It is great fun and good exercise. Or you could do line dancing or maybe arobic classes. What area are you from? Interested in volunteering at all? Are you involved in any church?
Lots of questions - just trying to get to know you.

Oh, MaryBeth, that sounds like interesting fun. I can't quite figure out how to meet others in my area; it's such a mixed area (indeed, parts of it are not safe!) with mostly old industry/car parts lots, run down strip malls with vacant stores, etc. such that I have to drive half an hour or more to get to areas that I'd want to find people to associate with and that's just too much trouble.

When I moved here 6 years ago I looked into all the "usual" organizations but just didn't find one of interest; I did join the local Curves but that wrecked my arm and then went out of business and the old, stale organizations; garden club, library friends, etc. are just not my cup of tea anymore. I'm a bit too young for the senior center and it's one of the not-very-good neighborhood ones so I'd have to go to another and that's the drive thing, etc.

Well, I have just returned from a 3 day TOPS convention. I volunteered as a hostess because it was held in my local area. This was my first time attending one. It certainly has given me some motivation to keep on trying to reach my weight loss goals.
I can do this - one pound at a time!

Slow going for me. Seem to be stuck at 200 lbs. The weather is getting nicer and I've had lots of physio treatments to help with my arthritis so maybe I will get into a better exercise routine. Can't do much about the way my hubby cooks but can somehow learn to cut back on my portions - yea, easier said than done!
Nice to know we still have some active members. We are not alone - all of us have struggles with weight loss so it is nice to have the support of SparkPeople. emoticon emoticon

Tom - I love the fact you dance so much! Wish I had the energy, but mostly the time, to do that. Sounds like so much fun!!

I'm trying to take things slowly so I don't get discouraged this time around. My body is really sadly out of shape since I really haven't exercised since I got pregnant in 2009. My upper body strenght is pretty good after toting that baby around but my cardio is really really sad.

But, I'm following the Spring Bootcamp plan (most days anyway) and tracking my food (most days anyway) and as long as I get enough sleep, I feel pretty good.

Sounds like year 4 is starting out rough for a bunch of us!. Since my fall in February, I have had trouble exercising because I am still healing and going through therapy. I get bored and want to eat - and not the good stuff either!

Glad you all have my back! I am hoping to get a new (FASTER) computer so I can get on more often. Mine is a dinosaur and takes forever to load most stuff.

Struggling, I put on 10 pounds around the holidays and I haven't really tried seriously to take it off. I keep saying that if I would not eat this or that I would take off the weight. Old habits just Never go away. Summer clother are tighter than I would like so I really do have to get back into the whole routine of tracking and more exercise. I am not about to let myself get back to square one in the weight department. Lorraine

I'm off to a very good start because of a medical emergency last weekend. Too bad it takes being scared by one's health to start really paying attention again!
