I turned 40 back in 2010 so next month you can figure out I'll be 43 yeah lol...I'm not married and never had any children so I don't have those obligations or goodies which is okay by me because I'm lucky to be alive honestly. I was a sickly child and into my early 20's I had bad bronchitis and was sick a great deal.

In my mid to later 30's I became more confident so it started before my 40's. I live for me and I do care for others but I learned to take care of myself and take care with my body much better and exercise and eating right has kept illnesses and other afflictions at bay so I'm not visiting the Doctor.

I think the biggest thing is learning to be grateful and not beating myself up for bad choices in life. So hard for a perfectionist but I'm learning. I'm getting myself together in every area of my life and maybe I'll reach my biggest obstacle of getting a drivers license. The test has always given me anxiety like you wouldn't believe. Plus backing up and parallel parking lol. I've never cared much to have a license but I suppose it may come in handy sometime.

Yeah, in a few select areas I am a bit of a late bloomer eh? lol~ But I have a lot to be grateful for so I don't stress~

"If a person wants to be a part of your life, they will make an obvious effort to do so. Think twice before reserving a space in your heart for people who do not make an effort to stay."

"Your happiness is up to you. Whatever happened in your life to make you who you are up until this point is irrelevant. It is your responsibility now to take control and change your life to be what you want it to be. Energy and persistence conquer all things. Make time, not excuses."

When I turned 40, my son was starting his first year of college. So my 20's and 30's were spent raising him (me being a stay at home Mom, which I truly enjoyed!). So now it was time for me to take on my own life and find what I liked to do. I have been enjoying my 40's for a couple of years now and I believe it only gets better! I feel like I'm 10 years younger! emoticon

I liked just not having to dress like everyone else or please anyone else. My extended family doesn't really like the new independent (ie. not willing to be pushed around) me, but too bad. I have to live with myself, not them.

Yes, you can!

For me turning 40 allowed me to truly (start) becoming my own person. I started doing the things that I enjoyed (even if I did bu myself without family/friend) and focusing on my needs. Now I'm 47 and much happier with myself. And my family and friends enjoy the new me.

I think turning 40 was the beginning of taking care of me. In my 20's and 30's it was all about having a family and taking care of their needs first and foremost. Now they are independent and encourage me to stay healthy. I have 3 amazing daughters and we work out together and play basketball weekly. I also think that I no longer find it important to fit in to all groups and committee's. I do what makes me happy!! I love being 40!!!

I finally realized that I didn't really owe anyone any explanation to why I do what I do! Additionally, I began learning to live for ME..not for the satisfaction of others b/c you really can't please all of those people, so why try? 40 was the beginning of emotional liberation for me...thank you LORD!

My outlook changed. I was a frumpy overweight mom in my 30's. When I hit 40, I decided enough is enough and started losing weight, taking care of myself, and dressing nice when I go out of the home.

When I turned 40 I graduated from college and became a Radiation Therapist (passed my Boards!), got engaged to an amazing man, moved to Texas with my children to be with him and started my new career! It was the best year EVER!!! This year I turn 50 and I've lost 30 lbs., kept them off for quite some time, still work as a RTT AND I got certified as an instructor and teach Step Aerobics. I feel better than I ever did as a kid!

Reconnecting with old friends. Everyone was having 40th birthday parties and I got to see a lot of people (and their families) that I don't always get to spend time with. Now we stay connected better because we understand how important it is.

A month and a week before my 40th birthday, I passed my motorcycle test - the first (and only) driving licence I ever had. And within the year, I (unexpectedly) got a Harley and found I could actually handle it! There are down-days to that, but generally this is the biggest and bestest achievement for me in a LONG time. I'm now taking that as encouragement to lose weight and like my ageing body - quite a challenge for me. I'm not bad looking nor really fat, I know that. But I'm far from being a beauty and my ideal weight.

Turning 40 was the beginning of a lot of things for me. I have taken little bits that I don't like about me and am working on changing them. This all started with quitting smoking.
I love it when people tell me I don't look old enough to have grand-children...that is the best part!!!

Here's to it and from it and to it again, if you can do it, then get to it and do it AMEN!!!

I'm 45 now, the 40's have been much better than any of the previous decades. I like myself much better, took charge of my health, and discovered both my inner child and my inner athlete. People are also surprised when they hear my age, probably because my 2 daughters are 11 & 6 (they help keep me young!) As far as mid-life crisis..I plan on getting my motorcycle license, and I'd like to get a Harley.

Got my first tattoo at 40 and the second one at 41. I'm about due for my third...!!! I hit a mid-life crisis at 40 and it took me until now to find myself again and figure out what is important. I constantly struggle between being successful and being a good family person. It's hard to do both really well. 43 is around the corner, and I can't wait to see what I do next!

The best thing about turning 40 is knowing what you want and what you don't want in your life. It's making a conscious effort to surround yourself with positive people and appreciating true friendships. It's the self-inventory of past mistakes and successes and the desire to want to make the moments count and to excel and learn from the past. I am 48 years old and I have 4 children and now a beautiful little granddaughter. Being over 40 is having time to enjoy your older children as adults and having more time with the little ones. I am now more health conscious as well and thankful for all the motivational tools that SparkPeople has provided for me.

I love my 40's. On my 40th birthday I had been w/o cancer for 6 months. Every year since has been a gift and I will shout from the roof tops that I am 47. My goal is to feel good and keep the energy I want for my 12 year old daughter. Also in my 40's I have found that I am comfortable in my own skin. I am nolonger trying to impress people. I just want to be good to them for the sake of goodness.

Wow! The 40's are great! I got pregnant about "30 seconds" after my husband and I got married 24 1/2 years ago so I've been an at-home, home school mom for that long. My oldest got married last year, I've had one graduate, one is in college, and I have a senior who is soon out. What great years BUT I am going to enjoy "retirement":-) and the "newlywed" time with my hubby!

I'll be 47 soon. My only son died when I was 39 and I got a divorce, so I went a little "wild" in my early 40's. Since then I married husband # 2, got my ears pierced on my 40th birthday and have tried four different jobs. I wish I could settle down! Maybe my 50's will be easier!

I know what you mean slenderkaren. At work when people find out I had a 21 year old daughter, they think I started in my teens. Far from the truth. I had her when I was 25. So compliments all around and with this new excercising and eating better thing I feel great... If I can stay away from coke. Right now coca-cola is my reward for quitting smoking. Quitting cigs was easier than giving up coke. Who would have thunk it?

You ran a marathon? Fantastic! That's awesome at any age! I ran a 5K one year ago, but one month after that, my back went out! After about 1 year of bad health, I'm finally better and getting back on track. I ran 2.5 miles today-It wasn't pretty, but I did it.I'm turning 48 next week, my oldest just went off to college, and I'm enjoying the time with the one left at home - he's a freshman. I'm enjoying my 40's and I'm working hard to stay healthy so that I can say the same about my 50's !!!

It's not 50!
Learning about Dara Torres. She motivates me!
Looking back and seeing how I accomplished many of the goals I set in my 20s and 30s.

having some life experience and seniority at work so I feel like I no longer have anything to prove or have to impress others. In a work FREEDOM. Of course it's not all about work either. Also really appreciating and understanding the expression 'life is short' so time to live it up a little.

You haven't failed until you stop trying!

Done being a gypsy. I graduated from college and began teaching at 22. I lived in MO, ME, PA, WV and then met my husband. He was in dental school in WV and joined the Navy as a dentist. So we then lived in SC and WA. When I turned 40, he had decided to buy a private practice in his hometown, Elmira, NY. We had sold our Stanwood, WA house and were living in a military hotel until my school year was finished. When I turned 40, I weighed between 110-115. How I'd love to get back there...

My mom suddenly got cancer and died at 60. She had always been fairly healthy and took care of herself. I was 38 when she died. After that I decided that I wasn't going to worry about my age, and I would just be thankful on each birthday that I made it through another year. Celebrating another year of life is much better than the alternative! I didn't let 40 bug me. I find it funny though because now that I'm over 40 sometimes I forget how old I am. When someone asks me my age I know I'm 41, but sometimes I have to pause and think about it because I don't feel that old. It just doesn't seem possible that I'm over 40. I'm in the middle of the terrible teen years right now. I know I'm going to miss being a full-time mom when the empty nest thing happens, but I'm really looking forward to the freedom some others have mentioned. It will finally be ME time!

I turned 44 in May I have a 2 year old daughter, and a 18 month old granddaughter, I just realized one day that if I wanted to see them grow up I needed to do something about my weight, health.

The best thing about turning 40 was a sense of accomplishment for raising my children basically by myself, and they are great people and I was proud. I also had worked my way up from the bottom and at that time I was a Components Engineer and was happy with my career success, so the best thing was being able to look back and feel good about being me.

It seems like I found myself, well kinda still looking emoticon ! But I stopped worrying about what others thought, started focusing on God's plan for my life & started LIVING. Stopped trying to make it all perfect, I can only control what I can control & that's not a whole lot. God is in control, he's steering I'm riding!!!

I stopped caring about what other people think of me so much.

I feel like I am finally starting to find myself again. I lost my self somewhere between getting married and having kids. Now that my kids are older 19 & 17, I have more time to focus on me and not others. I'm starting to put me first.

I had my youngest child at 39, so my early 40's is a blur, with running 2 teenagers around to sports & work. I just remember feeling run down & exhausted.
Finding a Quantum Energy practitioner and getting in touch with my body again has been the best thing about my 40's. I even let my hair grow out after dying it for 7 years, it is pretty gray but not so dry & fuzzy! I love it!

I became a Grandma 17 days after I turned 40, but I have always told my kids that when I hit my 40s, I am going to dress the way I feel like dressing, and if I want to wear socks with my sandles, I will. Then when the grandma part was added, I really went nuts with telling them, I am a grandma and I am over 40, I can do what I want, and if it embarrasses you, oh well, too bad for you!

I figure I have earned every gray hair I have, and nobody is going to talk me into trying to hide them either!

Go 40s!

To get something you've never had, you have to do something you've never done.
When God takes something from your grasp, He's not punishing you, but merely opening your hands to receive something better.
The Will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.

I think the best thing about turning 45 was feeling more confident about myself. I am also more aware of the importance of eating healthy and exercising to remain healthy -- I'm definitely far from being where I want to be -- but sparkpeople is helping!

Something inside me changed when I entered my 40's a couple of years ago. WHAT I am became not nearly as important to me as WHO I am. I have a new self-confidence that I have never had my whole life - much different than the confidence I had in my 20's and 30's. I don't care what people think about me and I don't worry about the small stuff anymore. I'm a much happier, grounded person now.

The best thing about turning 40 was, for me, reading A New Earth, by Eckhart Tolle. I finally feel like I am at peace in my life, and I feel free to be myself, without self-consciousness and doubt. Living in the now is so meaningful and fulfilling.

I agree with Rowanshadowwolf. I am less self-conscious when in front of a group of people. When I have an embarrassing moment I don't feel like I need to crawl back into my shell, I just laugh and go on with my life. I now have the freedom to be me.

Great thread. Thanks.

I don't turn 40 until August, and that is my motivation. I am going to be 40 in a better body than I have now (not that it would take much).

The grandkid thing scares me to death right now. I have a 14 year old son and a 6 year old daughter. I better not be a grandma any time soon!!!

I don't feel like I'm about to be 40 so I guess that's a good thing. emoticon

When I turned 40 in probably the most unlikely circumstances....I was in ICU after brain surgery...I felt kind of wise. A wise woman. I don't know why, I just did. As I approach 50 in six months I am curious to know how I will feel.
