I use the mrs dash spices,TRACYZ what's the name of it? maybe can find it. i can go to a SAM'S CLUB on occasion. Maybe she can take some out before she adds salt? Or make a separate dish. I will do that when i make for others.

Don't know what i would do if Mrs. Dash wasn't around. Hidden Sodium is a problem for me. I use Himalayan or celtic salt sparingly. I like using garlic, lemons, paprika, cumin and all the sweet spices, fresh herbs like basil has become my new favorite and cilantro. Spices and herbs have been a lifesaver.
OWLWHO that sounds like a really tasty quick recipe

We use a lot of spices now, and don't use much salt anymore. We do have some sea salt for when we do want a bit...but it doesn't get used that often. Mrs. Dash, fresh ground pepper, garlic, Italian seasoning, any fresh herbs, paprika, red pepper...those are some of our favorites. :)

Well I substitute lemon, herbs, garlic for salt... I try to keep my sodium at a minimum!

I have a problem with edema and I am also on diuretics and potassium.

Also drinking water helps get the water off.

Hi Kim,

I understand what you mean about your insides corroding (like what happens to cars with road salt), because of all the salt, but actually salt is a preservative, when it is used with meat, so it's probably acting like that in our bodies too. Just about any prepared food or packaged food we purchase is probably loaded with much too much sodium. The "Rice Diet" program uses zero added salt, with their homemade foods, from what I've read. I find that to be quite interesting. I do have blood pressure problems, and take medication to keep me in as close to normal a blood pressure reading as I can have until I take off all my weight. My doctor has me on a diuretic, because I was really retaining fluid. He told me to be sure to have either orange juice or a banana each day.

I have to admit that salt is not usually a craving for me. I suggest that you make a small goal. Maybe you regularly ingest 4000mg of sodium daily (track it for a while). Then make a small goal of trying to ingest only 3500mg and do it for a while. You'll find that this might take a while, but will be infinitely easier than jumping from 4000mg to 2000mg daily.

I found that sodium hides everywhere, even in salsa, and especially in soup. I do two things:

1. I try to make my potassium numbers higher than my sodium numbers. I have to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables to get it to happen, thus eating less of other foods.

2. I try to make my own food instead of using processed foods. Instead of buying soup, I make my own, using low-sodium broth or water. When I cook, I usually omit the salt completely, figuring that I can add it at the table if it really needs it. When I bake, I use half the salt.

Making my own food takes more planning and a little more effort (and definitely more dishes). At first, I had a couple of "go-to" type meals that I could make quickly. On those nights when I know dinner would be late, I take out chicken, shrimp, or fish to thaw. Add a bit of oil, tomatoes and spinach and you have a nutritious and delicious dinner in 20 minutes.

You can set up that on your spark diet it will only allow you the amount of sodium that you request! I have it because I swell!!

Has anyone tracked their sodium?
I have never had high blood pressure not even come close to it. Now I wonder how I havent. I decided to see how much sodium I take in each day, I didnt think it would be that bad. I been eating reasonably falling into range for calories, fat, fiber, protein, and carbs. Then I told the site to track it and went back and looked how much I take in. I was totally shocked, I mean just floored most days were over 5,000 mg. The daily reccommended amount shouldnt be over 2400.
Does anyone think drinking a lot of water washes a lot of that out. I feel like my insides should be corroding with all that salt.
Looking for opinions on this subject

Kim
