That's a great motivation to fast. God asks the question of all fasts: Is this a fast that I have chosen? Very important question!

I am on a Daniel fast right now. It is not to lose weight but to get closer to my God.

Fasting is very much a part of my spiritual life. I fast all food and water on short fasts. Sometimes I go an a liquid diet so to speak. I NEVER use my spiritual fasting for weight loss. Kind of defeats the purpose of it. Make sure you are doing it for the reasons the Bible lists and not for self gain.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Pil 4:13.

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, constant in prayer. Rom 12:12

Thanks Purplevr7 and all for the responses. i love this team. Lose weight, get fit and get deeper spiritually. I couldn't ask for more!

Fasting should definitely not be used for weight loss... if anything, sustained abstenance will actually sabotage weight loss plans, like Victoria has pointed out.

Also, I agree fasting is personal, but there is sometimes a place for corporate fasts (for example, Esther invited the Jews to join in her three day fast 4:16). But then, even corporate fasts have to be 'personal' otherwise there is no point...

I totally agree that we can fast from other things as well. One of my mentors taught me how she would go off juice for a while and each time she got the urge to have a drink, she would say a prayer instead!

There are a lot of excellent responses, but the bottom line is that it is not meant for weight loss. If you have a health issue that prevents you from a "food fast" you can fast something else. Other options might be food or a favorite activity - the idea is to spend time with the Lord.

Yes, Iagree with Missy, a few years ago at a Bible Study group I joined, we talked about fasting being refraining from things other than food. Some of us gave up certain TV programs or talking on the phone and spent that time in Prayer. Also fasting is about time with God, not about weight loss.Yes I agree and I also liked the part about God not playing Peek-A-Boo, cute and to the point :0)

I agree, Missy. There are certain things I can fast from, just not my normal food intake since my blood sugar tends to drop too much.

Maintaining.

I think fasting is something we are all called to do. Some things in life will NOT be moved but for prayer and fasting. Jesus taught us that. I do think it is a personal thing, though. I do not believe all fasts are for a full day's food, either, particularly for those of us with blood sugar issues. If GOD calls the fast, then you are safe from all harm. When man calls the fast, be very cautious to see if God would have you join in. There are so many ways to deny the flesh for spiritual matters. I do think fasting for an entire week can cause you physical problems, so please, PLEASE be certain it is a fast that God has called you to do. I've known people to fast TV, filling TV time with praise and worship music. I've known people to fast something they love, coffee, soda, chocolate, bread for a period of time. God will lead and direct. He doesn't play peek-a-boo with us concerning how to please Him!

And of course, if you have either hypoglycemia or diabetes, it would be dangerous to fast.

Thank you for the reminder about what spiritual fasting is about. You all give great replies to this post. We should focus on the spiritual aspect of fasting and not try to use it as a way to lose weight. Victoria made a good point about what fasting can do to our bodies. Thank you all for the comments!

Today is actually a day of fasting and prayer at our church. For God's direction with both our church and school.

The purpose of fasting is not to lose weight or twist God's arm, but to humble ourselves. So our day should include some self-assessment to see if we are being proud and not being humble before God and others. God instructed His people to "humble themselves and pray" 2 Chron 7:14 -- notice the order: humble, then pray.

Humility recognizes ones, dependence and that the source of our strength and ability comes from God, not ourselves. So God's glory is chief concern in our prayers -- not just solutions to our problems and provision of our needs.

Remember tomorrow is the national day of prayer.

My name is Jewell.

The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail Isaiah 58:11

Hello :)
I have done a lot of different types of fasting over the years. It's not surprising that you gain it back. The Human body goes into a starvation mode which dramatically slows down the metabolism to conserve energy. Once a person comes off the fast, the metabolism is still slowed down. So the weight can come back on and then the metabolism starts to get back into the swing of things.

This is why fasting usually isn't a good way to try to Lose weight. Besides when it's done at church the main purpose is all about prayer and the fasting part is to really help the people to focus on what ever is being prayed about during that fast. It's purpose isn't to help in prolonged weight loss :)

Good luck with your monthly walk with prayer/fasting

Fasting is a personal choice at our church. At the church I used to go to, it was also a choice, but sometimes we were asked to fast for a particular reason...I always felt bad because I was unable to do it. No will power, I thought, but, maybe it was just the reasons were not good ones for me. But I have not tried fasting for years.

I fast and pray about once a month also and I do notice that I lose weight but i gain it back because of poor food choices after the fast. I think fasting is good if you are healthy enough to do it but not all folks can.

The ministers in our church (of which I am oneemoticon lol!) fast and pray one week every month - no solid food, only fluids.

I tend to lose 3-4kg (about 8 pounds) by the time the week is over, but I gain it right back!

I know this is not ideal when you are trying to lose weight and sustain it.

Any thoughts?
