I underlined at one time, with different color ball point pens (pink, purple, and blue were my choices).
Never took to writting in any of mine, other than the front and back pages like a year book, that fellow friends signed after a SEARCH weekend. That may change this time around...
I like the idea of highliters intended for thin paper... gonna have to check that out! Thanks for sharing Gospel Clown!

Yes, it helps me to remember certain points from sermons or studies. Also underline or highlight favorite verses.

I also write in mine. Way back when, my spiritual mother taught me that it was okay. It opened up a whole new world of study and a closeness to the word I hadn't had before.
Yes, I do; it helps me remember where to find favorite verses.

After eight years of religion classes, all of my Bibles are written in, underscored, etc. It is great to go back to my study Bibles when I have a question and the answer is usually there for me and usually marked from previous study.
My Bibles are all used over and over and are well loved. My study Bibles have grown in size due to the constant use - my first one is very worn and the pages are thin and has been rebound several times - my new one is large print and thicker than the first and I notice that it is showing a lot of wear and tear.
I do not feel writing in them defaces or defames them as you can see they are well used.
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thy own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths. Prov. 3:5-6

Lamentations, one of the verses I love most says God gives us to will and to do His good pleasure, and I think that's part of God giving us the desire of our heart. He places within us the desire, the yearning, the hunger for what He's leading us toward, preparing our hearts, putting the WILL to do and the DO to do His good pleasure in place. That's the longing of my heart, that I will be filled with a heart that will follow hard after Him, aligned with His plans, snuggled just that close to Him. Thank you so much for sharing with us. It's awesome to see you posting already!

Beloved Sister, you are setting yourself up for defeat with a very subtle deception Satan has managed to weave into a scriptural truth when you say "My wants and my needs will be met because God is my source." It is true that your NEEDS will be met. The life experience of Job, Joseph, Paul, and Jesus show that "wants" may be met, but often, God says, "No" to prayers for wants because HE has a different purpose. Christ fervently prayed for his "want" to avoid the pain, shame, humiliation, and death of the cross; yet His perfect example for us was to pray for "wants" but allow God to decide what is best to glorify Him and/or serve others. In regard to his "wants" Jesus prayed, "But not my will but Thy will be done." He willingly left his "wants" on the alter before God and accepted the Cross because He knew that His Father in Heaven is always faithful and would use His (and our) suffering for His glory (and in this case the salvation of all who believe in the resurrected Christ). This should be more than a tag line on our prayers. But a heart-felt desire that we hone through practice. See Phil 2:3-4 which shows the goal of our maturity. Here we see the willingness to put others "wants" ahead of our own. May you be filled with and empowered by the fruit of the Spirit!

I sure do, and I really miss those notes when I begin using a new Bible. Seeing those notes often reminds me of times when a verse or passage has been particularly meaningful, like looking at old photographs from special occasions in the past. Going back to an older Bible is like reconnecting with an old friend. I like the idea of dating notes; I haven't done that.

yes. I highlight, take notes and write prayers next to scriptures I stand in faith on. I have written prayers for my children and others too. I passed one bible down to my oldest daughter, who treasures the messages I have written. I also date scripture I read. It may sound weird, but I like to know how fast/slow it takes me to get through my bible in a year.

Well.. I was brought up strict RC, and it was unheard of back then to even think of writing in the Bible other than the title page...When I became a born again Christian and attended a new spirit filled church for the first time, I brought my Bible with me and the pastor actually said to underline such and such scripture.. I was thinking, "wow, you're actually allowed to do this?" lol.. Now I take notes, underline, and write whatever comes to mind in my bible when reading it..

I go in stages about this. I will occasionally put a note in a study Bible, although never in my leather-bound pulpit Bible. I own at least 10 Bibles, plus assorted commentaries, so if I have something special I want to remember about a passage, I print it & stick it in the New Interpreter's Bible, which I know I'll be looking at any time I study a passage seriously. I never highlight because of the bleed through.

I have one paperback bible that I write in. My leather bound bibles or hardback bibles I don't write in because I am particular about the condition of my books.
The Almighty will provide regardless of any opposing circumstance!
I write in my Bible extensively as it is also my Study Bible. When I was growing up...many, many years ago..., in Sunday School the teacher told us it was perfectly okay to write in our Bibles and that this was an honor bestowed on The Lord Himself. I have three Bibles used over the years and they are all written in, I have never got rid of them and they are part of my spiritual collectables which I look upon as I smile. Have a blessed weekend.

I highlight my bible but I keep corresponding notes in composition notebooks. I keep a small spiral bound notebook in my van for sermon notes, and then I transfer them over to my devotional notes, highlighting the accompanying verses of scripture. I don't make notes or underlines in my bible (or in any of my other books), just highlighting.

I'm glad to hear that you have been keeping notes and underlining. Did you know you can order a loose leaf Bible to add blank pages for longer notes?
Do look for the Bible highlighters in your Christian bookstore! They are made to mark thin sheets--- you'll never go back to the original 'seeping' type.

Yes, Lou. I write in my Bible, and underline, too. I have one old Bible that I look at sometimes (it's King James Version) and am interested in the notes I made way back when. I have a NIV that's old now, and it's heavily lined and notated, too. Soooo, because of that (and due to advancing age), I got a new NIV in large print. heh-heh. It's getting lined, too. I figure that God would rather that I make notations (underlining, etc) and get more from His word than to have a 'fresh' book that doesn't get much use. And, it IS neat to re-read notes I've made.

I have gone through a couple of Bilbes that were thoroughally marked, highlighted, underlined and full of notes. The Bible I have now does not really have much space for writing.
As far as the highlighting, I had a problem with it bleeding through, too. So, I started using just the black, blue, red and green ink pens.

As noted earlier, I write in my Bible. I have a question for those of you who say you use a highlighter. I have tried this in the past but have a problem with the color seeping through to the other side of the page. How do you deal with that? I have begun to use the 4-color pen to have the multi color effect.

Absolutely!! I also date what I write so I can relate back to what may have been going on at the time that made that verse stand out to me. I write in any white space available. If there is not enough room for what I want to write I put a sticky note on that page and write what I need, including which verse I am referring to.

Sometimes I feel sacrilegious doing so but I underline in my Bible, highlight passages and make notes in margins. Is this weird or do you do this, too? -- Lou
