I remember when a local movie theater would accept 12 bottle caps as the entrance fee for movies on Saturday mornings before noon. We were very studious in collecting them!

I remember when we would collect glass soda bottles and return them to a store for the deposits and we'd take the metal bottle caps, punch a hole in them with a nail then make a cap snake by threading a string through them. Innocent fun. -- Lou

I remember when marching bands and various majorettes from different cities were grand attractions in summer parades. We'd all compete for trophies, wear tassles on our boots, and traveled on buses for hours to get to the next parade to help make another towns celebration a big hit. Now all we ever have is firetrucks.

Every soul has a dream. Every heart has a way to make it happen.

As I filled my car's gas tank with $3.04 a gallon gas the other day, I remembered when there were gas stations on each of an intersection's four corners and they would have gas wars, dropping prices a penny per gallon. There were no self-serve pumps. The attendant would pump the gas, check the oil and the air in the tires, clean the windows and smile! -- Lou

Hats and hankies. I remember my dad always donning a hat when we went out and ALWAYS had a white hankie in his pocket. Mama had hats to match her dresses and always had a lacy hankie in her purse (which matched her hat). Ahhh for the days!

I can remember when I was in school and we thought we were so very cool when we dressed in black slacks and black turtleneck sweaters, some with black berets emoticon and went to coffee shops to listen to some inane patter that we thought was so hip like: "Rain. I remember that clothesline - I was 10 my youngest brother was a baby - my job was to get the diapers (yes cloth diapers) off the line and fold them when I got home from school...

Oh, yes, that yardstick, brandished just so, would strike fear in the hearts of kids and grandkids alike. lol Now I miss the yardstick.

Yes - and the yardstick was the stick of choice that was used and often broke over our bottoms... of course more for my brothers than for me emoticon

Do they make and use yardsticks anymore? That was always the term Mama used for measuring things. For instance: A man's honesty is the yardstick of his character. The hardware store in our neighborhood always gave away yardsticks with the company name on them. It occurred to me I haven't seen one in... maybe decades?

...the only dinner delivered to the house was Chicken Delight, brought with a cardboard plate stapled on top, before styrofoam took over the world. Pizza delivery began some time later. I don't remember ever having pizza delivered. Mama's cooking was SO much better than anything from a restaurant!

We didn't have Mr. Fifteen here. I do remember the first fast food place for us. It was Burger King. I got $1 allowance a week and tax in our parish (adjacent to Orleans Parish) was 5%. I could get a Whopper, fries and a drink for $1 but had to borrow a nickle from my mom for the taxes. lol

Leah, I DO and they sure did stink! LOL When I first began transcribing, I well remember having to type huge jobs, one a lengthy court martial of some 2,400 pages, having to print on a dot matrix printer then having to "burst" all the sheets: paper, carbon, paper, carbon, paper, carbon, paper. And the three copies could not be smudged! Oh, happy day when I got my first laser printer. lol

Honey, you must have been the most adorable little remote control ever. lol

For those of you who may not know, CaptainCookie is my husband, who went from being a chef (extraordinary one, I might add) to getting his merchant mariner's license to be a ship's captain. Thus, his Spark nickname! Cute, huh?

Oh yes! And, do you remember the old mimeograph copy machines? Instead of crisp, black ink on the oages, they were printed in this purplish/bluish colored ink. You had to turn the crank, (like on a ice-cream maker), and the pages always came out damp, with a very distinctive "fragrance".

I remember card catalog files at the library before computers. I wonder where they all are now? I'd so love to have a pair of them for knick-knacks and dodads. Ahhhhh the days when we would have to paste the card holders into new books and use a rubber stamp with the date the book was due for return on the card and put it neatly into its little pocket. Can you tell I went to Catholic school where we were taught to do things properly? lol

I remember my grandparents had a "wash house", which was a seperate building from their house. Of course, when they got a regular washer and dryer, they were on the inclosed porch of their home. The "wash house" was always a fascinating place for us kids to see, though. While I do not remember them having the wringer washing machine, I do remember the huge, square, metal tubs that were later used for many other things.

I remember those old wringer washers very well from the camp (above the water type of structure) where we spent a couple weeks each summer. That's where I discovered the ice man, too, who would carry two huge blocks of ice down the long, long pier for the icebox.
