I have been adjusting my meal tracker, so I haven't gained weight. I did this mentally, by counting calories. I'll be adjusting it now. Have yourselves a nice sp day!

Sheila that sounds like fun! I wish I had a vacation. But, I get around enough. I got so much exercise yesterday that I'm resting by the TV! Memorial day will be good, and I just have a barbeque, which means the calorie level is lower!

My son is now 36 years old, and he's my baby! LOL My other son is 39. We had a wonderful dinner out... I had a greek salad, with pork chops, and a baked potato, and garlic bread. He had the canneloni
and a greek salad.

For his birthday... I got him a pair of Wrangler Cargo shorts, and two knitted shirts to match. That way, he has a choice. LOL. He was very happy, as he said he has worn out all his cargo shorts.

My son is a builder, and in the summertime, wears those kind of shorts to work a lot. Its funny... his tastes have changed over time. These items were like an army olive green color? In the old days, he would have hated that color. He wore blues a lot, and pastels.. he looks great in yellow. But any more, he likes the beiges, and dulled colors... gray, green, black. He has blonde hair and blue eyes, and is 6'5" tall... so, you can see him coming from a long way off. Physically fit. He has two daughters, but is not married. Life gets tough at times, doesn't it? Things are so different now than when I was young. He's a good son, and has a good heart, but sure did sow some wild oats. Now, he has settled down, and just works his life away. But he stays close by, and I'm glad for that. My two sons check on me pretty regularly, which is a good thing.

I know you are proud of your daughter. My son Jon, the youngest, went to college, and did very well, excelling. Won several awards and scholarships, including one from the Women's Alumnae group... first time ever given to a male, AND first time ever to an under grad (sophomore.. normally juniors or seniors) He got straight A's through 2 1/2 years of college. When he got his first B, he just... quit. I think you could say he is a perfectionist.. so I'm glad he never married. Its hard to live up to the expectations of a perfectionist.

Well... thats enough for now. LOL.

Hugs,
sheila

Worked a lot on ebay again today. Tomorrow, I think I'll take the day off and go to town shopping. Haven't done that in a while... my credit cards need a boost. LOL. Have to buy birthday gift for youngest son, whose 36th birthday is Friday. We are having dinner out tomorrow night, so I'll have his gift and a card all nice for him. :-)

Hope you have a great day, my friend....

Hi sheila. I am looking forward to a graduation party for my daughter! She is finishing up at a two year college, and going to a 4 year school in September! She is graduating with extremely high honors! Sheila the dinner out sounded enjoyable. My party is a meal, with healthy foods. I am glad. Have a nice day Sheila.

Thanks Therese...

Had a wonderful day out having dinner with my son and family. It isn't a long drive... only about 20 miles to where we ate...

Another cloudy day today, and bad weather predicted later. We had horribly high winds on either last Friday or Saturday night, whichever day it was that the tornadoes hit south of here... and I didn't sleep all night! I hope tonight isn't another one of those.

Hope all goes well your way, girl. :-)

I have two grown sons, and their mothers day celebration usually entails taking me out to dinner...

Each.

So... I will have my own calorie watching to do. But... we can prop each other up, I guess, Therese.

Next month, I have a week in Las Vegas, and there is NO WAY I can watch calories very well there! I'll just have to walk them off... and maybe just eat two meals a day.

Hugs,
sheila

No, actually, I don't use it in sewing, Therese.. I sell small lots of lace on ebay, in 5 and 10 yard lots, and I buy it in bulk, on big rolls of from 72 yards up to maybe 350... I have hundreds of laces, and thats mostly what I sell in my store on ebay. :-)

If you ever go on ebay, you can check out my store... my ebay id is strawberryfields55. Just search for that under sellers. :-)

We dont get a lot of what I call "the good" fresh veggies in the wintertime, but.. yesterday at the store, I got fresh asparagus, yum! and fresh hydroponic tomatoes, so I sure got some of those... some yukon gold potatoes, which I love for their flavor, and really good fresh green onions, not those piddly things that pass for green onions all winter.

So I just had a fantastic dinner, and one that was good for me.... a small tiny 2 oz. pork cutlet, pay fried with pan spray, and two small yukon gold potatoes, boiled, then chopped and fried in the pan spray, sliced fresh tomatoes, sliced fresh green onions, and steamed asparagus spears! Every part of me is very happy right now. LOL....

Hugs,

I got great exercise yesterday! I am planning on just that today! I missed dinner out Friday. My sis has an inflammation in her voice box. She was given meds for it, but she still has more tests to see if it's more serious. I am very supportive! Hope it's nothing worse, so I pray about that. I walked 4 miles yesterday! What a walk through the neighborhood! Have a great day Sheila and all!

Speaking of that. I spent all day yesterday dragging branches to my garage that flew off in a hail storm we had several weeks ago. No fun. It was great exercise and I'm pleased about that! Have yourself a great day!

Well, pulmicort is an inhaled corticosteroid, designed to help people with asthma. But the main purpose of the steroid is to reduce inflammation in the lungs.

I was on Advair, which was a corticosteroid, in combination with another drug, that would be similar to what is in the study drug, if I were actually on the drug. Therefore, I must come off the Advair during the drug study. So, the Pulmicort is to replace the steroid in Advair where I'm concerned.

Hope that helps... LOL

On my second day at the drug study, I again reported at 8:00 am. I would have liked to have slept in a bit, as... an 8:00 arrival time means I have a wake up call by 6 am. It takes that for me to get my morning routine in, bathe, and have breakfast. I'm fortunate in that the Fairfield Inn has a very nice continental breakfast, which really offers a great selection. Besides fruits and cereals, and juices, and bagels and a nice selection of sweet rolls , and coffee, they also have belgian waffles, hard boiled eggs, and yogurt

So, after signing in upon my arrival, I was immediately rushed in for a new PFT test, and then, given my study drug to inhale. And, 25 minutes later, another PFT test, and one hour later, a third PFT test. My numbers never moved. I am for sure on the placebo. This is the first time I've ever been on the "non" receiving end of medication.

But they will provide the Pulmicort, and the albuterol to keep me going for the three months of the study.

At the end of the PFT tests, I was given the study drug box, which contains foil wrapped capsules of my "study drug". In addition, there was a zip locked plastic bag inside. I am to keep the empty capsules inside this bag once I'm done taking the doseage. There are already two capsules inside. The research director has saved them from my doseage of Day 1 and Day 2.

He also instructed me to write the time of each doseage administration down, in my daily journal they provide, which is to be, as near as I can do it, within a one hour time frame of the first doseage taken. Thats why I had to be there at 8 am, and at each subsequent visit, at the same time!

I also will be taking a peak flow meter reading in the morning and the evening, and answering a set of 8 questions morning and evening in this journal.

For your own information, there are "Drug Study Monitors" who travel about and keep records and follow very closely, every drug study that is conducted. I am assuming these are from the FDA, as they are monitoring the drug companies, as well as the study sites. I have been visiting when the Monitors for a certain study, or for all studies at this site (I don't know... I'm not told these things) are there. They have a room set aside from the rest of the research facility for the Monitoring Station. I do know they take loads of files in there, for the Monitor, and that usually "her" visit (I've seen three Monitors there over the years) will last for at least 48 hours. I find it comforting to know that these drug studies are monitored, to make sure they are on the "Up and Up". Not just because I participate, but also because, that should be insuring that the drugs that reach the pipeline are actually tried and tested as we are led to believe they are. From my perspective, I can say, I drive the 220 miles each way to THIS drug study site because I am so impressed with their professionalism.

Hugs,
sheila

Hi Therese...

Here's a wrap up of this two day visit to the drug study....

On the first day, there was over six hours of closely timed, and regulated, testing. At specified intregals, I blue PFT tests (pulmonary function tests) SEVEN times (total of 21 Hard as you can blows each of them seven seconds long, into a slightly resistant tube)! For all of you who have this lung thing, you KNOW how tired you are gonna be after doing this!

I had three different SETS of EKG's... one before I received my study drug, I think it was 25 minutes before) Another set 5 minutes after I received the study drug, and a third set (each set was an EKG test, three times, one minute apart) two hours after I received the drug.

I also had blood taken three different times, two tubes, at the same three times as the EKG's above.

In addition, I filled out a long questionaire early on in the day. Questions that were designed to "hone in" on, or... provide them, with a what is called, BASE LINE, of how I felt, and what physical exercise I could achieve, before I ever received any of the drug.

I began this day at 8 am... and it was 2:30 pm when they were through with me for the day.

To come back again, the next day.....

BUT, by the time this day was over, and i had received my first one day doseage of the medication, I was well aware that I am receiving the placebo in this drug study. I say this, because... my PFT's remained steady, and within the same 35-37% lung function range the entire day.

The research director of this Drug Study program, is my Drug Investigator for this study. It is the first time I've ever had him do one, though he has "helped" a little with some of the others. There are three women there... all with way advanced nursing degrees, and who have received additional schooling for this kind of thing... (For each study, whoever is running the study (each one does one, or two or three different studies... I don't think the director does any, but.. he is doing at least me on this one)

They have different protocols for each study. I don't know for sure how many studies they have ongoing right now?? but I know that it will be more than five, and maybe even more than ten. I will find out.

Anyway, the research director told me, in the morning, that i would know before I left that day, whether I was on the drug or placebo, because my numbers would show a dramatic increase! This new drug, Indacaterol, is going to be something really special for us, people! He is seeing a 17% to 30% increase in lung function in people!!! Amazing! One dose! (per day)

I have a friend who lives there, that I've gotten to know over the years of going to the drug study... I've even stayed at her house several times for a day or two after the study, and we did "fun things" together. She has sometimes been in the same study as I, or.. a different study. She is not as advanced in her COPD as I, her PFTs are running in the mid-50's she told me on Thursday evening, when we had dinner out together, along with her husband.

She is in this study, and, her PFT performance increase, at least to begin, was 18%. She's very happy with it.

In my discussion with the Research Director, he indicated to me that if all things are "GO" at the end of this study, it should be on the market in one to one and a half years from end of study, maximum two years.

This is NOT albuterol and serevent combined, as I had thought. I misunderstood. It is "in the same family of drugs as albuterol", but it is NOT albuterol. People in this study, whether they are on the study drug or not (which, theoretically we are "not supposed to know" because its a blind study, BUT with the performace records they are seeing, its pretty darn easy to tell whether you are on it or not! LOL) do use albuterol as needed as a rescue medication. So it is NOT albuterol. It is "something else" that happens to be in that same drug family.

Now, here's the even better news...

The research director told me, that... with the medications that are in the pipeline now, and.. coming, there is no reason why, with proper utilization, etc... that COPD will need to be what I die from. They will be able to control this disease well enough to "maintain current levels of performance" soon in medical time terminology. So.. I took from this, that... sometime, in the next 4-5 years maybe??? but.. this INDACATEROL is leading edge of the coming events, ... as long as we do as we are supposed to, and take the proper medications, we will be succumbing to "some other variety" of disease, most likely.

How's THAT for some great information!!!!

This is so long, I'm going to do Day 2 on a separate post!

Hugs,
sheila

I will do even better when there are more fresh vegetable choices. For example, fresh tomatoes?? I'll eat sliced tomatoes three meals a day! And, I'll eat a salad made with fresh veggies, also will cook more fresh vegetables. I buy frozen, but its still not the same!

I'm so ready for spring! Today, I planted inside plum tomato seeds, fresh basil, and parsley starts... I will set those out soon. And I'm getting ready to do cucumbers and regular tomato starts. I don't plant a big garden, but I love having a few things planted for myself fresh off the vine.

I hate to say it, but I don't cook! I find it to be too much, with a busy schedule, since I go slow with preparing meals. I have a tv dinner for dinner. The rest of my meals are easy. Oatmeal for breakfast. A sandwich and yogurt and cottage cheese for lunch. I vary it day to day. It works so far! Anyway, have a nice day!

I'm doing pretty good on food choices. Had the same thing for dinner tonight that I had last night, I liked it so well.

Perch fillets, oven browned potatoes, and fresh veggies (frozen stir fried) Sure was good!

Several glasses of chocolate milk between the two days, and a salami sandwich.

Oh, and two eggs and 2 whole wheat toast this morning.

Thats it for two days. :-)

Hugs,
sheila

Yes, it will come off again.

I'm so tired of yoyoing myself. I can't seem to break the barrier of 213 lbs. It doesn't seem to matter much what I eat either.

Its another cold bleary dank day in my part of Missouri. We're supposed to have weather like this for the next week! Hard to feel "up" when its gray like that constantly. LOL

But spring will get here, sooner or later!

Hugs,

Sheila-I am more than ready for the spring and summer. I love getting out with warm temperatures and a beaming sun! I'm a little discouraged today...I gained a few pounds and feel bad about it. I know, if I slow down my eating, it'll come off again! That's a positive resolution! Have yourself a nice day! I am planning on one!

Just keep on truckin'

Are you as ready for Spring as I am? More dreary drizzly days forecast for the next five days! I want to see sunshine.. days in the 60's and 70's. Course,
50's & 40's is way better than 30's. :-)

Actually, Therese... I didn't have a single Easter egg, or candy!

My son Jon came and took me out to a late afternoon lunch, or dinner.. what would you call that, lunner?
I couldn't eat it all, so... brought some home, and ate that later. So, yes, I did real well through Easter.

And today as well. :-)

Glad to hear you're back on track!

I'm back. This two days was for some intensive testing. There are some prerequisites, and ... I go back in two weeks, to finish up on that testing. They've already had to adjust two of my medications, as... they are "not allowed" in this study.

My Advair, they switched out for, during this study, Pulmicort, and my Lasix, to another diuretic (water pill) I forgot the name of it, but I'll be picking the prescription up tomorrow. They called it in to my pharmacist. It starts with a "D"... Something about this diuretic is a potassium drainer, and the drug I potentially will be testing, can also do that as a side effect, and they want to be able to test for that, and so, I cannot take another drug that would produce that result.

And the advair has Serevent in it, which is a similar component to what will be in the Albuterol, so... I have to go off that, but will still be receiving the steroid benefit for my lungs, from Pulmicort.

I'll know more when I go the next time, April 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. The study will last three months, over June 30th, July 1st for me. That will be my last trip. (I drive 440 miles round trip, but they will be reimbursing me for my travelling)

I had an EKG done, several PFT tests (Pulmonary function tests) a blood workup specific to this drug study, plus some testing regarding my diabetes to make sure that I am within the guidelines for this study.

Hope that was interesting for you all. :-)

Hugs, sheila

My walk went very well, and I did indeed go all over the Walmart Store. I will say that when I got home, I was extremely tired. LOL.

And Sunday after church, I spent the rest of the day working on my ebay listings.

And today, I spent wrapping ebay packages for mailing, and going to the post office. I'm also very tired this evening. But I'm happy for the ebay things, because it keeps me busy, and brings in extra money, which is always nice. :-)

I haven't lost any weight lately, but as soon as spring gets here, I'm going to re-energize in that department. I have to drive about 20 miles each way to get fresh veggies now, and so... I only buy enough for salads, and fresh fruit. but... about in April, the Amish have a vegetable stand about 4 miles from my house that I visit at least twice a week, and I eat lots of fresh vegetables. I also grow some of my own, like tomatoes and cucumbers and radishes. :-)

Good talking with you....

Hugs, sheila

Sheila-Thank you for thinking of me. My mom is on oxygen for emphysema. She is barely able to breathe. So, I know how your routine goes in some ways! You are brave! Today, I'm really watching my eating. I want to lose a few pounds of weight this week as a start to give me motivation. Then I'll go back to .5-1 pound! Have a great day!

Hi Therese!

I'm going to walk today! I'm gonna walk all over Walmarts, leaning on my cart. Thats how I can do it.

With the COPD/Emphysema, I get out of breath if I walk far, but I've found by leaning on the cart, and supporting myself with my arms, it gives me "breathing room" or something, so I can walk all over the store, up and down, back and around, and feel good doing it, and I don't lose my breath!

I will be thinking of you as I'm doing it, and saying... Therese is right here walking beside me. LOL

Have a great day and hugs to you....

sheila

Well, thats just terrific, Therese!! I'm getting ready to sneak up on my scale, and check it out. LOL

I have diabetes, recently diagnosed (November 2007) and I've had a real struggle trying to get my blood sugar stabilized. I still don't understand how that works.... its just crazy to me.

But super congratulations to you on your weight loss!

Hugs, sheila
