Happy New Year, everybody! Dwight and I had a quiet New Year's eve at home, very enjoyable. I love the idea of starting 2013 with a clean slate . . . there's so many areas in which I need to improve, still working on my goals.

Lori, you skating party sounds lovely. I would have liked to see you skating on the pond. Makes me think of a Currier & Ives print.

I know I tend to romanticize snow, but you've got to admit that it's beautiful when it first falls. Always makes me think of the hymn, "Whiter Than Snow."

JanetR, what instrument does Gene play in his band?

Good Evening.
Been a pretty lowkey day. Just church this morning as we are on a break from Sunday School. I need to get to work on that for next week though. I am committed for 4 to 6 more weeks.
Had my party of sorts tonight only had 7 guests so it was pretty low key. We had a good time. I have a frozen pond at the base of my back yard. Different people skate on it at different times. It's a fun diversion for an afternoon. Got a little cold today. The sun was out early and it was calm but cloudy and breezy by the time we were out so we didn't last long. Than we watched a video and snacked and played a couple of games.
Most of the time I like winter. That's a good thing living hear. We probably have about 8 inches of snow on the ground more is expected this week and the temps are low now it wont be melting anytime in the next week or so.
You all should be proud of me as I actually skated today.
Your weather there sounds a little more trying Janet R. We have had a couple of big snows, it melted after the first storm. I am not sure what this week will bring.
I am not thinking that it will be long before there will be changes for our churches in a lot of ways. We'll see but I think tax status may be the tip of the ice berg. There is so much issue with discrimination right now and I am not sure we are going to be able to maintain standards.
We'll see.
I need to get myself in order and get back on track for the new year and undo some bad stuff. It's becoming a health concern not just cosmetic. I am getting rid of all sweets Wed. That may seem like an odd plan but that's when I have somewhere to take whatever is left. The youth eat anything and everything.
Keep on keeping on team.

Weather update! Freezing rain here tonight and then again tomorrow afternoon into night with snowand 1-2 more inches. I hate that on NewYears eve because people have to party and driving is bad without bad weather. I'm babysitting as Gene has a band gig. He told them that this was his last one!! Hope he sticks to it. I hate for him to be around the bar scene.

No we didn't have church. I watched the grandkids for about an hour and I have been downloading patterns for my embroidery machine. I will go Wed and clear out my Christmas items and hopefully add some new items. I checked out 10 day weather forecast and they hae removed the bad weather for Jan 7 and now shows temps rising into upper 40's. Please pray it holds. We need to do some ground moving to get ready for our garage building on Jan 18.

I never was a cat person until we inherited Bart. But Kevin and I have both decided that Bart will be our last pet.

I can see what happened with the Brethren Church in England happening other places. I'm afraid it is just one more sign of the times. Unless we do what they say and act as they say we are going to be in trouble I'm afraid.

I posted a new topic for new years. On didmis topic I saw some new names that I haven't seen in a while. We all seem to be hovering around that last "leg" of our goal reaching or really trying to maintain our position! I hope 2013 shows more activity and support among us!!
How about a new slogan for us? Suggestions?

Poor you JanetR with all that snow...I'm not a winter person either but to be a duck would help here!!
Hope you find the cell phone battery, don't suppose anyone is going to remember where they put it!! lol.

Elaine, what the charity commissioners said was that the Brethren don't contribute anything towards the community... Well as we know, that's not true. Yes it could have an impact on every church here but some have been smart and also registered their buildings as community centres. That could be a hard one if somebody wanted to hired the place for an (ungodly) party! The untapped source of tax revenue is at the bottom of it of course and the States could be next.
What a lovey way to get new books for free, especially as you love to read. Do the authors advertise for review readers?
I haven't heard you mention your son Drew, what's he doing these days and is he still living at home with you & Dwight?

Nellie you have a real houseful of four legged pets there! I do like dogs but as most of you know, I'm not a cat lover. Well takes all sorts. My niece has a little Pug dog called Lola, she's a real character. But as she didn't take good care of her, she lives with my sister and brother in-law now.

Lori, hope you finally finished cleaning the basement!! I assume it was a youth venture taking over your house again...gotta love those (Christian) young people!!

If I recall correctly, Sequim (pronounced Squim) is in the northerly part of western WA. Olympia and my little town Shelton are more in the middle of western WA.

I'm another cat person. At present I am down to 4 cats. I also have 3 dogs (2 of my own -- a Yorkie and a Chihuahua mix and I am caring for my oldest son's mixed breed mid-size dog).

Maintaining.

Janet, do you know if there was something in particular about The Brethren that caused the government to take away their tax exempt status? Or might it come to all churches in England? It could happen here eventually, as the government needs more taxpayer funds, but I don't think it will be soon - too much of a public outcry, I would imagine.

I'm glad you liked my Christmas blog post. I don't really like blogging because writing doesn't come easily to me, but I mainly use it to post book reviews. I've discovered that several Christian publishers will provide free books in exchange for posting reviews online - and since I enjoy reading so much, that's been nice. Most of the books are sent straight to my Kindle.

One of my favorite things about cold weather is bundling up in a long fleece robe, and yours sounds delightful with that "Merlin" design!

Nellie, you have a large family! It's great that you could be together, with the exception of your son in the Air Force. And you live in a beautiful part of the country. Is Olympia anywhere near Sequim? That's where Daniel's parents live (my son-in-law).

Elayne, I didn't realize you and Arjay had been sick. So glad you're better now! It always seems to take a long time for the singing voice to return. And "Mary, Did You Know?" is such a moving song! I get chills when Mark Lowrey sings it.

So you're a cat person too, Lori! Your two cats probably have a ball with those bows. My other cat is seven years old and never bothers the tree, so I'm thinking Max will soon grow out of this stage. Where are you having your skating party?

JanetR, I almost feel bad about wishing for snow when you're having so much! Dwight always says that I love to look at pictures of snow, but would grow to hate it if I had to get around in it. But I'm not so sure... Did they call your church off?

I've had a quiet Saturday, mostly spent in preparing for Sunday - listening to our worship songs, putting my music notebook together, making PowerPoint sermon slides for our pastor, etc. And I spent some time sitting in our den by the wood stove, which was very nice.

I too love that song! We have around 5 inches more snow today! But our temps are in the20's and 30'. Just cold enough to keep the snow around. Call for more on Monday. I'm just not a winter person. But it is pretty just to look at. We didn't have church last night and it looks like we might not tomorrow either!

Out tomcat Bart is not one to mess with much anymore. We have Whit's calico in and out and she is a little more nosey! But the twins and Caleb are the ones we loose things with. Last night the got my cellphone and so far I still haven't found my battery!

I love the sound of your robe! It does sound nice and cozy!!

Been a nice day for me...chilling out for a change. I've decided the good living sweet stuff is at an end for me! Clothes are telling me...enough!
Rainy damp day, not as cold as you Lori, doubt I'll every see -15! (I would perish!!)
Joseph had to admit that I look lovely as Mrs Merlin....the stars are white, mauve and pink. Lori, you got a bargain there!!

Nellie that is one of the bonuses of having so many children...glad you managed to get quite a few together over the holiday.

Elayne that is good news that you and Arjay are well on the mend...now to stay healthy!!
I love to hear that song too at this time of year.

Oh Janet. We had a robe similar in style to that but red, white and blue. It came from a thrift store near Cooperstown bible camp when Amanda worked their one summer. Now yours sounds perhaps a little furrier. Just the thought made me chuckle.
Cats and Christmas trees are an interesting mix. Mine do not climb the trees and have not chewed light cords, however they have destroyed a few ornaments. I am going to have to get a few shatterproof ones for the lower branches for next year. They are not as pretty but it's kind of surprising Esther hasn't hurt herself with a glass ornament shard so . . . Jasmine mostly likes to sit under the tree. I had a few packages with missing bows and keep finding them in odd places. All and all with two cats in the house it could have been worse.
Cleaned and cleaned and cleaned in my basement yesterday. I am having a skating party tomorrow and it will include food and games in the house so . . . Still have a bit more to do and I am putting it off by hanging out online.
Have a great day, Keep warm. Just for you Janet it was -15 this morning. High is supposed to be 19. We'll see if we get there.
Love the kitten Carole. Reminds me of Esther.

Hi Janet, My bronchitis has cleared up and I am no longer coughing. I still don't have a singing voice back yet. I couldn't sing Christmas Eve, so that was disappointing. But the good side is I got to hear what the choir sounds like from the congregation's view and it was very good. One song they did was "Mary Did You Know". I love that one. Arjay's cough is less and less now too. I'm glad he's doing better as well.

Everyone sounds like they had a good Christmas. I just wrote a blog about our Christmas if anyone wants to read it. emoticon

Of the ones that came in from out of town, my youngest son Bryan left on Christmas evening to get some driving in before it got dark. He was expecting some snow in the mountain passes, so figured he better stay in a town in Oregon before tackling them in the daytime. My ex went back to his motel about the same time, since he was expecting to get up early the next day to make it to the airport. As it is, his flights were hung up in Cincinnati since there was a major storm in that area. I am thinking he is back in the Washington, D.C. area by now.

My second son couldn't come since he is in Korea with the Air Force. Of the others, my oldest son, and 2 of my daughters live in Olympia, WA, and I and my second daughter live about 30 miles away from there.

Today seems to have been an eating day! I made Joseph & his sister a Christmas dinner complete with black forest trifle for dessert. Then the homemade mince pies... We exchanged presents and mine were a box of chocs, fudge and chocolate smarties! Is that little lot fair? lol. Anyway the day was very nice and then we drove her back to the station to take the train home.

Thanks Carole, I have read the history before we attended the meeting.
The Brethren were in the news here recently because the Charity Commissioners have ruled against renewing their Charitable Status. That of course means they will be liable for paying income tax. This is an issue because if they extend that to all churches they will all have to pay tax. Of course your churches come under that banner too, so that could be coming?
My brisk walk to the town only takes me 10mins, sometimes we walk back up the hill too! We feel we're so close to the town that we rarely drive there. When we move we shall not be close enough to walk though.
I wore one of my bargains this morning. (You have to picture this...) It's a long robe with a zip up the front, fleecy, grey with pink & white stars, two pockets and a hood. Joseph said I look like Merlin's wife!! lol. But it's very cosy and warm. The other bargain was some unmentionables, as Lori once called them!! lol.
I have been reading your blogs when you post them on fb. The Christmas one was very nice.

Elayne, is your chest condition almost cleared up now,and Arjay's too?

Nellie, how long did your family stay or maybe they are staying until new year?

Carole, Max is adorable and your tree, the top half is beautiful. I'll have to show my Max your Max's picture when he wakes up! We have all unbreakable ornaments. It's like baby-proofing your home but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Thank you, Nellie! It's like Elayne said in an earlier post, "Our kittens and cats rule our homes." With Beth and Daniel not coming home, it was hard for me to get into a decorating mood. And besides, I wasn't willing to sacrifice any of my ornaments to Max. We're pretty good about just doing whatever the situation calls for and not worrying about it.

Elayne said she'd like to see a picture of my half-decorated tree, so I thought I'd post the link to my book review blog where I did a Christmas 2012 post with pictures. There's also a little information on our new kitten, Max, the reason behind the oddly decorated tree.

Hi again,
I was more than ready for time with my son. It's been nice to see more of the girls too.
The weather has been relatively mild for us. Lows around zero and highs in the teens. It's been snowing a little most days and everything is very white. These couple weeks around Christmas and New Years it's good to see temps in the teens and 20's.
I hope to have a skating party Sunday and it's supposed to be 22 and sunny. Nice for skating.

I should chime in regarding kindle as I have had one for over a year now and use it a lot. You can check out library books for it at most libraries. Project Guttenberg has classics and other public domain books. Sometimes it's easier to get the same book from Amazon for free because they are better formatted. Most of the public domain literature is pretty widely available. Kindle only reads kindle format and a format called mobi. You can use a free tool called Calibre which is at caliber.com to organize your free ebooks and convert things from Google books to mobi so kindle can read them. There are tutorials on the calibre site for this. I learned about it when I was doing research to teach a workshop on ereaders.
I haven't used a lot of these things much as I download some free books from Amazon and use my kindle for aps, library books and bible reading. I love youversion.
That's my 2 cents worth.
Keep warm

It's good to hear from you, Lori! It's great that you've been able to have your family around you during the Christmas season. How's the weather in North Dakota?

Elayne, I've heard about Project Gutenberg, but haven't downloaded anything from threre yet. Don't they mainly have free classics? I don't know how successful I'll be, but one of my goals for 2013 is to read some of the classics. I never read more than was required in high school/college and I've probably missed out on some great books.

JanetR, here I am wishing for snow when you're getting so much of it! I had to laugh at your mailman analogy with Caleb. It's wonderful that you have such a close relationship. I imagine that he's quite a bundle of energy.

Janet, you said you walked to town. How long a walk is it for you? And what two "bargains" did you find? I've only done a little online shopping - bought a few bargain-priced Christian fiction books with an Amazon gift card and a couple of Yankee candles at half price, another of my weaknesses. Candles are about to get too costly for me, even at half price, but I have enough to last for a long time.

This is probably more than you wanted to know, but I was curious and had to look up the Brethren. Briefly . . .

-- The Brethren movement began as a melding of Radical Pietist and Anabaptist ideas during the Protestant Reformation.
-- The denomination holds the New Testament as its only creed.
-- Historically the church has taken a strong stance for non-resistance or pacifism.
-- The early Brethren were very meticulous in applying the New Testament to every situation. For example, they baptize in a forward direction because "we are baptized into his death," and at the moment of his death, Jesus' head fell forward.
-- Brethren often describe themselves in terms of what they do rather than what they believe, and have been heavily involved in disaster relief and other charitable work.
-- Historically, men wear black coats with no collar, and hooks instead of buttons / beards, but no mustaches, as the mustache was seen as a sign of belonging to the military / beards were cut in a manner to avoid interference with the kiss of peace.
-- Women would wear long dresses in dull colors, and a "prayer covering." The traditional Brethren plain dress is very similar to the clothing of the present-day Amish.

Now that "kiss of peace" is something I'd like to know more about!

I slept so long and hard last night, good to make up for some I've missed maybe.
Walked to the town to peruse the sales and found two bargains, used Matt's gift card for those.
Tomorrow we have one of Joseph's sisters here for lunch...wonder if she's catch the train and actually arrive?? lol

Carole, the older women wore long skirts etc but some of the not so young were into more fashion. According to their booklet they have open days when the public are invited to attend so maybe we shouldn't have been invited? I just think they were very suspicious of us just turning up. There wasn't a sermon, just the short readings by several men and so fast it was hard to catch was what said. I said to Joseph, a meeting 30mins long....yet about 200 people arrived and then left straight afterwards. Although I don't think they live in communes like the Amish they do a lot for their members financially, helping them get established workwise and housing etc. The do street witnessing here in my town a couple of times a week and I was interested because I found out that a few generations back my family were Brethren. It really wouldn't be possible to go back again because I think they would labour the point about a head covering for me.

Glad your all explaining the kindles, I just might get interested in one!!

Lori, glad you've had lots of family time, I know you needed that badly!!

JanetR...my 7yr old twins are into Tablets now!! Fortunately they have Uncle Matt on hand to help them learn they way around!!
Uck...that snow doesn't sound good! Keep warm!!

We are active here today. Caleb is shooting ducks in myliving room! I has a roll of my wrapping paper as his gun. What an imagination. I've decided that he is going to be a mailman, snow, rain, nothing stops him from coming to Papaw's LOL.

I was agreeing with Carole that the group sounds more like the Amish. We have a Menonite Church here close to Anna and they are a lot more friendly. I've never been in one of their services but I know some who have visited.

I didn't put up the tree this year but I usually just take it down I'm in the mood.

I didn't realize that you could underline and print out from the kindle. I will check into one sometime. After my embroidery machine purchase I won't be making any purchases for a while.

We still have lots of snow and another front is coming in tomorrow. Starts with rain then goes to snow around 4 pm so that means slick conditions, looks like we will probably have services cancelled tomorrow night.

Oh my. I have only read a few posts and wont try to go back. Just move forward.
We have had such nice times with family of late.
Austin was home for 2.5 weeks around Thanksgiving, on convalescent leave because he had a rather odd foot surgery to remove a mass of bone which grew there. It was benign and there seems to be no residual problems so that is a blessing. We feel like we are more in touch with him as he has been here more even though he wasn't able to come back for Christmas. Spent time with Amanda who is home with us now for a few days and Emily and Andrew in Fargo before Christmas and exchanged gifts and ate holiday dinner. Also trekked to Grand Forks to visit some older folks on Sunday than home and had Christmas eve service Mon. and some of Ted's family for supper on Tues.
Yes yesterday was the sale day. I was out and about for a while. Didn't get up early and brave the doorbusters though. Bought a few clearance items and browsed a little. They will have insidewalk sales at the mall on the first probably and if I want any clothing or such I will shop than.
We have two large artificial Christmas trees. I will take them down sometime after the 1st. Ted's birthday is the 6th and I am kind of setting that as a goal as I go back to work on the 7th.
I need to take out some trash now and than head to the Y. I checked the tv listings. Have not been highly motivated so I go when I can watch something I enjoy on the monitor.
Have a great week.

I am not skilled to understand what GOD has willed what GOD has planned I only know at his right hand stands one who is my SAVIOR

Hi Carole, Yes, we know about that website. Thank you. Do you know about Project Gutenberg? It's a free e-book site too. Huge library. Amazon.com has free e-books too.

Wish you had a picture of your half tree. That's too funny. Our kittens and cats rule our homes, that's for sure.

Janet, the day after Christmas is a big shopping day here, second only to the Friday after Thanksgiving - although it's probably more about returns than anything else. I don't venture out on those days at all. And it sounds like you're really enjoying being close to your family. I'm glad you were able to move back to England.

Thanks for telling us about the Brethren service. The farther I got into your description - the way the men/boys dressed, men and women sitting apart, etc - the more I thought it sounded similar to Amish. If so, it probably wouldn't feel warm or welcoming to outsiders. Did the women dress in any special way? And was there a sermon?

Elayne, do you know about the ereaderiq.com website?

Beth didn't know that you could "gift" a Kindle book to someone until I sent her an advent devotional book last month. Now she enjoys that feature . . . when I opened my e-mail on Christmas morning, I discovered e-mails from Beth, announcing two books for me to download. One was a one-year chronological Bible that I had been wanting. Now I will think of her every time I open it to read, as if I didn't already!

When do we take our tree down? We have an artificial tree that stays in a corner of our sunroom the year round, so I just take down the decorations whenever I get around to it. You guys should have seen our tree this year . . . thanks to a new kitten in our family, we only had 1/2 of a tree. In other words, only the top half was decorated. Our kitten loves to climb the trunk almost to the top and look out at me through the branches. My ornaments are all precious to me - and breakable - hence the empty lower half.

Janet, I can see why you were uncomfortable at that service of meeting or whatever it was. I don't think I'd want to go back there.

We both do a lot of reading so I am finding books for free and they are good ones We can also borrow from our local library too.. I like humerous books, mysteries, medical mysteries, inspirational, biographies, and classics. I just finished reading A Christmas Carol eventhough we have the classic hard back among our collection. I did read it from there before. But what I read now also has The Chimes and The Cricket and the Hearth, all by Charles Dickens. I'm starting The Chimes now. I don't remember having read that one before. The Kindle can store up to 1,100 books. Don't have anywhere close to that number. I can't imagine having that many books. My Kindle will highlight whatever I want and will save it as well. What is so neat is that when you turn the Kindle on, it goes right to where you left off in your book. No searching for where you were.

How long do you leave your tree up? I usually leave it until Jan 6.On the 5th I'm going to the work party at church and help un-decorate there. We work from 9 to noon and then our Pastor provides lunch. He cooks! It can be anything from chili and a salad to sandwiches. Someone usually brings a desert. Not that I need that, but I usually have a small bit of whatever was brought. Anyway, I guess I'll start putting our stuff away on the 6th and use that Sunday and Monday to get it all done. Or I may do it Mon. and Tues. and leave Sunday as a quiet day. We'll see what my mood is like. Sometimes I get in the mood to get it all down at once. LOL

Hi everyone and looks like the celebrations were all lovely for you.
Today is still a holiday here, Boxing Day and traditionally the day the sales begin with vengeance! I stayed home. We were at Sarah's yesterday and it was really a good day. She said this was the first time she didn't have a good cry when I used to phone and skype. Today Matt came for lunch and although he was there yesterday too didn't really chat too much too him so it was good to have some quality time with him too.
We have much heavy rain here but thankfully no snow as yet!!

JanetR, that sale sounded very good and no wonder you went a little mad!! Glad your family time was good too. Of course missing loved ones is hard at these times I know. Somehow not visiting my mum now I'm home feels strange.

Carole, I know the airfares are prohibitive at this time of year, glad Beth & Daniel have some good friends over there to fellowship with.
The brethren service was nothing like I'd attended before and to be honest it was not for me at all. We were invited to attend and when we arrived in the car park we were a little early, so sat in the car praying. A man started tapping on the window and asked if we were attending the meeting? The told us we couldn't go in until 5.15pm, although everyone else was arriving and going straight in. We waited until the appointed moment and as we were getting out the car the same man asked us if we had any 'listening or recording devises on us'??? I was really shocked and found his manner more than a little threatening. Anyway he said we could go in. Just inside we were told to hang our coats up and then they wanted me to wear a scarf to cover my head. I refused to do that, Joseph gave them the scripture why women didn't need to cover their heads. They reluctantly let us go in but the same man escorted us to some seats set apart and sat next to us!! All the men, young men and boys wore white shirts and black trousers and sat in circle of bench seats, there were probably about 100 of them. The women sat along the outside of the walls and behind us there were more women, young women and children. The service lasted about 30mins. Two hymns sung sitting down and then several men read a few verses from some chapters of the new testament which took a hurried 5 minutes each. Afterwards people chatted one to another and some of the older men talked to Joseph and and asked how he came to the Lord. Finally they did say we'd be welcome back anytime but.... I felt very uncomfortable there and not a welcoming spirit. They gave us one of their books about their beliefs etc and they do seem similar to the Mennonites/Amish folk. They only permit marriage at a certain age and amongst themselves but looking at some of the young girls I could see the world has crept in so maybe it doesn't always go according to their plans. Sorry this was so long! They were Plymouth Brethren and are also referred to as Exclusive Brethren.

Elayne I think you and Arjay will make full use of your new Kindles!

Nellie, I don't know anything about Kindles, except what they're used for. Do you read many books?

JanetR and Elayne, I can understand how you feel, because we have so many treasured family memories around Thanksgiving and Christmas. Time helps, but I find that memories keep flooding back, even years later.

Elayne, I wish I could have heard you and your friend play The First Noel; I'm sure everyone loved it. I have every one of the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas CDs, obviously a favorite of mine. I have the piano music to a couple of their albums, and have played Silent Night and Hark! the Herald Angels Sing, which weren't all that easy to learn.

I adore reading on my Kindle and am glad to hear that you like the Paperwhite. I have what I believe is now called the Kindle Keyboard, but would probably go for the Paperwhite when it dies. I have no interest in the Kindle Fire because I only use my Kindle for reading and prefer an e-ink screen.

JanetR, I don't know about the newer models, but I can underline or highlight easily on my Kindle, then pull them up quickly or even print them out. But probably my favorite feature about using an ereader is being able to increase the font size.

Nellie, I think your daughters and granddaughter will love their Kindles! There are several websites that they can subscribe to and receive daily e-mails about free or bargain books.

Has the storm passed by where you are, JanetR and Elayne? We had heavy rain and thunder storms during the night, now it's windy and much colder. Dwight left a fire laid for me in our wood stove and I'm about ready to strike a match!

I talked to my brother last night too! This is just a rough week for me. Fri will be 2 years since Dad passed away.

We got our snow, about 8 inches. Suppose to get more Fri and Mon. I'm ready for Spring already

Hope you stay safe Elayne. That's a bad storm system. Hope Carole is OK. Janet told me that she is having lots of rain

Janet, I understand you missing your Mom. It was really strange not calling home to talk to Mom or Dad this year. My one brother called me around the same time he would have been calling Dad. What brings me comfort is knowing they are happy together again.

We're suposed to get heavy rain and winds today as the cold front passes over Fl. I went and worked out this am. Now I can stay in and read my book on my Paperwhite. I really like having the screen back lit.

Have a good day everyone.

I haven't upgraded to a Kindle yet. I like to underline in the book I'm reading but I can tell getting the version with the light is a great idea! I do have a Azus tablet which I really like. In fact I'm charging it and my hotspot right now along with my laptop and cellphone. We are under blizzard warnings with wind gusts up to 45 mph expected later so I'm trying to prepare in case we loose electricity.

Had a very quiet day today and I've been remembering my mom and really missing her today.

Speaking of Kindles, my ex was here for this Christmas and got several Kindles for those who had expressed a desire for one, which ended up being my 2 older daughters and my oldest grand daughter. They were all exploring what they could do on them!

Merry Christmas Carole, Janet and JanetR. Sounds like everyone has been busy but had a nice Christmas Eve and Day. We had a nice Christmas Eve Service too. I still don't have the voice to sing but played on 3 carols and my friend Debbie and I played The First Noel in the style of Mannheim Steamroller when people were leaving the church. It's a jazzy, funky arrangement that our Pastor loves and requested that we do it again this year after hearing it last year. He said we could play it forever and he wouldn't tire of it.

Now JanetR, I can tell you what Arjay and I got one another. Last year we gave each other a Kindle reader but it didn't have the bult in light. We enjoy reading so much we decided to upgrade and get the Kindle Paperwhite which has the back lit screen. It's great. You can adjust the brightness, and this model is a touch screen one. I really like it. In fact I've been reading Dicken's "A Christmas Carol" which I like to read every year at this time.

My sister sent me a beautiful Pandora bracelet with a cross charm on it. My brother and his wife (the same ones who sent the pie) were at a craft show and found a lady who makes teddy bears. I love bears. But, this is no ordinary bear. She takes old mink coats and makes bears from them. She even includded a photo of the coat my bear was made from. I don't have a problem with that since the mink had already been a coat and she is just recycling it. What she makes on the bears goes to cancer research. I'll take a picture of it at some point when I clear out my Christmas pictures but I have more to put up before New Years. My other brother sent Arjay and I a gift card to a store we like. So we did well. Oh, My friend, who is the choir director gave me a neat inspirational boook called "Paws for a moment with God." They are devotions best enjoyed in the Company of a Cat. The back of the book states, " There is wisdom to be learned ob observing the habits, curiosities and antics of a cat." It goes on to say that one of our many blessings I have been given is the companionship of a wonderful cat.

So, now you have all my news. Loooking forward to being more active here in the New Year. Have a good rest of the night.

Merry Christmas, everybody! I hope everyone has had a wonderful time with family today. A big part of my family is in Germany, Beth (daughter) and Daniel, but we had a long visit thanks to Skype. Beth's whole mission team stayed there because air travel is so expensive around the holidays, but they were having frequent get-togethers at each other's apartments to celebrate and just enjoy being together.

Elayne, I've heard of shoofly pie, but had no idea what was in it. I can't believe all the sweetners . . . it would be interesting to try and figure out the calorie and carb content of one slice. Many people suppose that its name originated because you had to shoo the flies away from all that sweetness, but actually Shoofly was the brand name of molasses used in the original recipe back in the 1800's.

Janet, it sounds like you had a lovely visit with your friend. I've heard of the Brethren . . . what was the Brethren service like?

JanetR, you must love being surrounded by all your family! I remember those days of toy shopping and it's certainly hard not to get carried away.

I played for two Christmas Eve services at our church last night, and spent most of the day preparing for them. Driving back and forth to church, it was so foggy that I couldn't help but think of Rudolph, "Then one foggy Christmas Eve..."

Today has been pretty quiet and peaceful. I took my time preparing brunch for us, visited with Beth on Skype, and am writing or calling a few friends this evening. Our rain chances are at 100% over night, with thunder storms toward morning, then turning much colder. Good wood stove weather!

Christmas Eve here and we had our family get-together tonight at Gene and Whitney's. Leah and Mitch also there. I made a pot of Italian Beef and it was good. I think Kevin and I got a little carried away on our gifts for the kids but we hit a great sale at Rural King Sat evening. All toys were 50% off. So far the kids have had an awesome Christmas with Santa still left to come, Mommy and Daddy and Mamaw Gina!

We had a wonderful get together with Lon and family. I'll be posting a pic on facebook soon. Then Sat aft had the twins birthday party at McDonalds. I've been so busy with so many deadlines that it seems odd to not have ay deadlines now. Tomorrow I'll cook a ham dinner for hubby and his Mom and Dad and then just relax.

We have a blizzard warning for tomorrow night until Wed noon. Blowing snow and cold temps, possible 12-15 inches of snow! Not looking forward to that at all!

Everyone have a peaceful, loving Christmas!

Hi Elayne, I read your blog about the antics of Max...what a blessing you spotted what he was up to!!
I think I've heard all about Shoo Fly Pie on SP...as you say, not calorie friendly but it was a gift after all from your thoughtful brother! Glad you had a good taste of it!

We were blessed today in our morning meeting and after lunch went to visit a very old family friend, Joan who is 89. She's in a care home and it was lovely to see her again. Afterwards we visited a Brethren service. That was very different to anything I'd seen before.

Hope everyone else is doing well as we approach the holidays.

Hi there. Three friends and I went to lunch yesterday. We call it our Christmas lunch. It was the first time my friend Elsie and I have invited the other two women. I had a delicious roasted turkey, cheese and avacado sandwich on toasted rye bread. I couldn't eat the whole sandwich.

We got a gift from my brother who lives in Pennsylvania Dutch Country where the Amish live. What we got was a Shoo Fly pie. Not diet food at all. It has molasses, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, white flour, vegetable shortening, brown sugar, water, white sugar, corn syrup, and refiners syrup. Net. wt. is 2 lbs. 6 oz..( That's exactly what I weighed when I was born) Anyway, the note says for best results for the pie, place in microwave for 15 secons per slice and serve with whipped cream. We did not have any whipped cream so that was good. I took a slice to our pastor as he loves shoo fly pie. We served a piece to our guest on Wed. afternoon, and I admit I have had 3 small slices since. I told Arjay the rest of the pie is his to enjoy now.

Max gave us a scare twice this week. Please read his blog from today to see what happened. He's ok, thank God. He needs his own guardian angel.

It's been a day running for me, late lunch and then off to see my younger sister, brother in-law and niece who happened to be there too! We stayed to eat which was not at all on my food list but what can you do? Tomorrow is another day...
We're just having a little downtime now before bedtime. I did get some pressies wrapped today.

Another Thursday and a rather damp dismal day for me down south. We are getting into removal companies and prices now so am pleased about that. Yesterday we gave our agent the written notice of when we shall leave this place....the countdown is on now!
School run this afternoon. The boys are so tired and Sarah too, it will be good when Friday ends and the holidays start!!

JanetR...I did chuckle at your post because I knew Holden is your pastor...of course it could have been a child too I suppose.
I'm not sure what Adam had to say about Sarah getting stuck, the boys will have related the drama for sure! Have a lovely time at your family meal.

Elayne, good to know that Deanna is doing alright and shall continue to pray.
I know you would have been very sad to miss your church events so glad all that is progressing well for you now.

Nellie...I stood outside when they tried to move the car and the shingle was spinning around like a machine at me...I quickly moved!! lol

First I want to apologize for my last message! It was a mess, I just read through it. Chalk it up to being busy and typing on a keyboard minus some keys thanks to my sweet little grandchildren!

Elayne I'm glad you are getting back into the swing of things. We are having our church get together after church Friday night. And I meant to tell you that I love Hobby Lobby for trims, etc.

Oh my, getting stuck sounds like what I would do. Been in that situation many times! Doesn't make Kevin too happy! Glad you are coming along with your moving. It will feel like moving day when we get the garage finished!

Lovely couple of days with Leah. Really enjoyed myself. Meeting with Lon tonight and his family and our Uncle Larry and Mary. Then trying to get Chrismas gifts finished up

Glad you got un-stuck. That's no fun. To answer your question about Debbie being a member of our church..no she isn't. They met outside of church. She is a sweetheart though.

Went to a church member's 102 b-day celebration today in the nursing home she's in. She is an amazing woman. I think half the church was there to celebrate with her.

Our church administrator, Deanna, had double bypass surgery yesterday and is doing pretty well for the first day post-op. She'll need continued prayers though as she has a long recovery ahead of her.

Looking forward to going to choir practice tomorrow night to get ready for Christmas Eve. I said my voice isn't that great to sing yet and my friend/choir director said that was ok..I become another warm body in the choir. LOL

Been chasing around today. Drove to another town for lunch with a friend and we walked at least an hour before lunch and afterwards! Home for a while and then went to watch the twins school concert this evening. That was lovely...Sarah parked the car on a grassy bank and got stuck in the mud so needed a tow out!! What a drama!

Hope everyone is having a great day!

Did a little more present hunting this morning and then home because a removal company were coming to give a quote. This is the 2nd company that didn't show! This one did have a valid reason though...
Out to lunch with a friend tomorrow...wonder what I shall eat?

Nellie...that has to be a POWerful message! PTL

Elayne, you were surely missed so glad you're back now, keep well.
Sounds like your fingers are going to be kept busy. How wonderful that your pastor is engaged. I'm sure they will make a happy couple. Was she already a member of your church?

JanetR glad you had a lovely time with Leah and the twins. Is Holden the only child in the nursery?

Hi everyone. Happy third Sunday in Advent. We lit the candle of Hope today.. Our Pastor's sermon was on..Hope.I have a project to do this week. The congregation is making a "square" for our banner "quilts" I have a piece of purple felt to do something with and take it in this week. Have to see what glitter or beads or smething I can find or get tomorrow so I can start workng on it. Pastor Paul told me I have to make one! LOL I want it to involve music somehow. Hmm....that's my project for tomorrow afternoon. I saved all my cards from last year so perhaps I can find something there to cut out and use. Any ideas you have, please let me know.

Exciting news. Our Pastor became engaged on Wed night. We are so happy for them. His fiance' is so nice, so warm and outgoing. She's a hugger like I am. We are all excited for them.

I had a great welcome back from everyone today...Starting with our Pastor. He said he was glad to see me back after my long haul. Everyone clapped! This was after I had played 2 carols with our organist and pianist. He said this as I was walking back to my seat. It's nice to be loved.

I think that's it for now. Have a good rest of the night. emoticon

Elayne that is indeed wonderful news. PTL. Also that your brother is much better too. Hope you're progressing well too now.

JanetR...yes we have turned warmer too, I don't mind about that at all.
Looks like you are going to be very busy for the next few days, all enjoyable I know.

Had a blessed meeting this morning and after lunch made sure we exercised again. We both want to get into the pattern of doing regular sessions of LS again.
This week I need to finish up mailing cards, hand delivering some and any last minute presents.

Elayne that is wonderful news! Glad to hear you are all on the mend.

Janet our rain is just the opposite. Instead of bringing in the winter stuff, we got warmer. We had quite a bit of wind yesterday and last night too.

Our program was a success last night! AND when I walked out with the choir guess what I found? A hubby and daughter sitting in the congregation!!

This is going to a busy but happy week. Going to daughter's tonight for dinner. Then going back just me tomorrow and shopping with Leah Then we are making cookies tomorrow night and I'm staying all night. She has a meeting Tues morning and then we are going to Cape and to the cemetery to put a wreath on mom's grave. Tues niight babysitting while Gene's boss taking then to dinner. Wed night neeting up with Lon's family and my family for our Christmas. That's end of plans for now. Of course, still working on gifts

Good news..Deanna did not have surgery and her heart is improving now. Praise God.

Just talked to my brother and he is feeling better now too. He had a bad sinus infection and headache and he went to the Dr. Monday. He said the medicine is working. So it looks like we're all on the mend. Looking forward to being back in church tomorrow.

Well, I'm off to help Arjay with making our Welsh cookies now. I just hope I don't "taste" too many of them. Have a great weekend.
