The article was very interesting. I guess I'll continue to use my old Joy of Cooking that I got for a wedding gift in 1973! Some of the combinations in the pictures were very unappetizing to me--who would ever think of putting a cheeseburger in a bun on top of a pizza or deep frying a Twinkie!

I know Carol, of course there are times when we all overdo it a little; especially when eating out for a special occasion but I'm sure the biggest problem for people is doing the 'overdoing' every day!!
Unfortunately, many people have a mountain of weight to tackle at that point.

I recently saw an advertisement or an article in a paper of magazine (Boy! How I miss my mind!!!!) stating the same thing JanetR. It said something like "Is Your Cookbook Making You Fat?" Haven't had a chance to read it, but would think it would be similar to the article you posted.

JanetE, Those pictures are enough to make a person sick. I was nauseous just looking at them.

Portion control is certainly the issue and I didn't do very good in that area tonight. However, the rest of the day was good. And tomorrow is a Brand New Day. YIPPEE!!!

True, true, true....it's all about portion control!

Did you know...
"An average human stomach is about the size of a closed adult fist. It can expand, of course, to hold approximately a quart or more of food."

So....how much food do we put on our plates three times a day?? Not counting snacks of course!!

Carole, lifestyle changes have certainly affected my Spanish neighbours. They've sold their pieces of land and old houses and now eat to extreme; mostly a lot more meat, as you said!

Personally, I've never been a big meat eater and now only eat red meat maybe once or twice a month, I mainly rely on fish, eggs, poultry and beans for my protien.

Portion control is definitely the key like your all stated. Before I started this program we consumed a pound of pasta in one sitting. Now we have lots of leftovers. Steak, chicken and other meals are now portion controlled. I find now use my scale to weight my food...

I was talking to a woman at church Sunday.. She was telling me of this great recipe for tomato sauce. I couln't believe what she was putting in it. She used Prego, several cans of tomatoes. I asked her why the Prego she said it was to bring out the taste. I told her that's were seasonings come in to play. Oh well that's her choice... I won't make it that way.

Corndog pizza is just way too much! I've really never thought about portions increasing in recipes over the years. I will pay more attention from now on.

Very interesting article! I understood what it was saying, but not why, until I saw this close to the end: "Relative to household income, food is cheaper than during the '30s. So recipes once padded with less expensive (and lower calorie) ingredients like beans, now often have more meat."

My son loves to eat at IHOP (International House of Pancakes), and they have some breakfast creations that should be pictured on that website.

Dwight had the same experience growing up on a farm that Kevin mentioned, JanetR. It was meat, potatoes & and gravy, homemade sausage, everything fried in lard - but they got up at sunrise and worked on the farm until the sun went down.

I saw those pics the other day and I couldn't believe some of the combinations!!! I know that our portion sizes are really getting bigger but I had never thought about the recipes! Kevin is always saying how the old timers ate fried foods, eggs and potatoes but I said look at the exercise they got too plus they didn't pile as much on their plates as we do!

I saw a healthy version of oatmeal cookies today and I started to copy it until I saw that it was 120 calories for 1 cookie. I knew that I would want more than one so that wouldn't be healthy at all!

Portion is a challenge whether at a restaurant, in a cookbook or in my mind.

This site is helping me learn to recognize approximate calories in a portion visually and eat (& not eat) accordingly.

Thanks for bringing this up. Chow hounds we have become!
