Hello Laraine,

While I admire you for wanting to keep a group going, I am not the person to help with that. However I would be interested in joining any or all of the idea's you listed. Especially the "meeting & walking" part. I have yet to be successful in finding someone from SP to be an excercise or walking buddy & I've been on here almost a year (although not seriously until the past few months. It seems like everyone is all gung ho about excercising until you actually try to commit them to a time & place and then excuses come flying out of the wood work as to why they can't meet today, tomorrow, next week or next year.

I have a few health issues & one of them is memory problems. Short & long term (especially in the list making area), so I really don't feel comfortable being leader or co-leaders of anything. Plus I have depression issues & it doesn't make me the most reliable person to co-lead!

However I would love to try out anything you suggest...I am a go getter..at least I am that!

We need some input on what it will take to get this team to be more active. Please submit your ideas. For example, special challenges, topics you would like to discuss, books we could read an comment on, a meetup somewhere central to all of us so we can meet and maybe go for a walk...someplace interesting.

Hi Laraine - Sorry I have been absent! Since my daughter had her baby we have been very busy. They live with us and it has been joyful but has gotten me off track with diet and exercise. Time to get back at it.

Hello, just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Joy and I work in healthcare IT in Kansas City. I live in Shawnee.

I have been on SparkPeople since November, but really started seriously and reset my goals on January 1 of this year. I have about 50 pounds to lose. I have lost the same 20 pounds over and over.

I joined SparkPeople because I was trying to cut back on spending. I dropped WeightWatchers meetings and online after trying out this sight for the month of November.

I started visiting this group and noticed that the leader had been inactive for awhile. I hope everything is ok there. I offered to take leadership to keep the group going.

I hope we can get our message boards active again too.

200 lbs.!!! I had surpassed it and it showed. I had to start shopping in the plus sizes. I felt the spare tire around my middle. 200 lbs. is the reason I wanted to lose weight.

Oh, you've done soo great Laraine! Good luck keeping on the wagon. Don't push yourself too far...remember to have fun with it! Once you stop having fun, you'll have even less motivation to keep it up. I'm proud of all that you've done, and I'm looking forward to see what all you can do!

Let's get this group active again!!! C'mon all you Kansas girls!!! We can do it! What's your motivation for losing those extra pounds we've packed on?

For me, it's mostly health reasons. My family's medical history is horrible, and I'm bound and determined to change my life now before it's too late (like my family unfortunately). Another reason is I'm in my early 20's *blushes* so I wanna look gooooooood for the boys ;-) (and myself of course!)

I admire you for hanging in there and am anxious to see the new you. I know I will be green with envy, but that too is a good thing maybe it will get my butt motivated someday to do more. I still admire you for sticking with it. Keep it up. Your friend, Shari ( ladybug) from Great Bend. emoticon

Laraine,
Just want to say you and others keep me motivated. Your 130 lbs. lost is incredible. Just seeing what others are doing for their health helps me to not give up. I don't do message boards a lot, basically I don't have or take the time. I just wanted to let you know that you and so many others are an inspiration.

Laraine, I won't be able to make it to the Fair on Friday. I am sooo sorry. I would love to go but all my kids are sick. Luke just had his wisdom teeth out, my middle son Kyle has poison ivy and my youngest daughter Raychel has strep. Ohh how much fun can this be??? My daughter has been on antibiotic since tuesday so she shouldn't be contagious anymore, but my middle son with poison ivy is my new concern. He is in football and will have to miss his game today. I really hate that. This is the 2nd game of the season and he is having to miss it. I hope you and Becky have a great time.

We live 6 miles out of town, mainly west of Valley then some north. My father in law and many other family members live in the town itself. He came to our house and stayed for a night, went home the next morning. He's recently retired and had just gotten home from a celebratory trip to CA, spent one night home and got booted out! The solvent company is being very generous to the people of Valley. They are asking people to bring reciepts for food, lodging, etc.. from the displacement for reimbursment. Something they sure don't have to do. They would like to rebuild there, but say they won't if the city people won't have them.
As for Mr. Etheridge, I couldn't agree more with you. I don't know him really well, but I work in a nursing home that had his mother for a couple of months before she passed and he was something else to deal with. I guess Valley Center saved him for a while, displacing him in the news and all.
All is quiet here, just needing to go out and mow part of the yard. Almost 2 acres and you just get done and it's time to start over again!
Have a good weekend,
donna

Oh my! I was so sad to hear about Valley Center. We used to live there--on Burns street actually--several years ago when we were first married! That was our first "REAL" house together as husband, wife, baby, and baby-on-the-way!! Two more children later, we moved out to the country--but unfortunately just across the street from where that manipulative man put Prairie Rose Chuckwagon. (Oh, I could tell you some things about TE and his "dealings" it makes me cringe everytime he calls himself a christian!)

So, CLDLG02, are you ok? Did you have to evacuate? Also how long have you lived around VC? Do you live north, east, west? I have an "adopted" son (not really adopted as he has a great mother, but he is part of the family) who lives outside of Whitewater but calls Newton "home." He called us up the day of the explosion to tell us about it. I think if it weren't for him, we wouldn't know anything as we are unconventional about not getting a newspaper except for the small-town weekly paper and we do not have television! I have to get news from friends, and online....

Please be careful!

Oh yes...as far as exercising in the heat...I too just can't take the heat...Ugh! I try to do my stretching on a yoga mat and with my cup of coffee in the mornings as the sun comes up--it is a nice relaxing thing (although have not done that in over a week now as due to injuries and illness--have missed it though). BUT I am so very lucky to have a free membership to a WONDERFUL!!!!! Wellness Center that is run by our local hospital! It is really so VERY nice and staffed by GREAT people! It has an exercise room with circuit training weight machines, 3 stationery bikes, 2 rowers, 2 eliptical machines, and a row of different kinds of treadmills--complete with pulse watch and calorie counters etc! (good quality) The exercise area of this part is nicely carpeted, but the other 2/3 of the room is like a dance studio in that it has highly polished wood floors and wall mirrors. It has mats in one corner where I stretch and do my core exercises as well as resistence bands and tons of fit balls! There is a separate free weight room. Then just across from the reception lobby, is some small but VERY clean locker rooms which lead into the swimming pool. It is not a really big pool and is 4 ft deep all the way around, but it is heated and has bars all around the pool for water aerobics and water exercise. There also is a stainless steel jacuzzi. The best thing is that this place is not only spotlessly clean, but it is AIRCONDITIONED!!!! Very nice! So....I really have NO excuse not to exercise!!!

Man, has KS ever had some struggling times in the last 6 months! Glad for the internet to meet others in similar situations! We live outside of Valley Center, 6 miles. Nothing like the tornadoes or floods but inconveniencing (sp??) anyway.
Do you all stay inside with workouts in the heat? I just can't take the heat, seems the older I get the less I like it (could say the same for cold too though)!

Hello fellow Kansans,
I joined this group long ago and haven't been on Spark People for quite a while. I'm back to try it again, hopefully less stress in my life! The last couple of years were pretty trying.
Wishing everyone who is dealing with weather related woes the best. We've had a bad year in KS weather wise.

ZANESMOM: Oh Trish, again let me say "I'm sorry" for your town's loss...I went back and read some of the news articles on the flooding there and didnt realize until now that you also were dealing with oil spill issues with all your flood waters as well. (We don't have television and we don't take but the local weekly paper, so the only news I get is just what I happen to catch on the radio or what I purposely go glean on-line...so sorry for the ignorance.) I know flood water contaminates and ruins so many things, and that petroleum products are always a big problem with flood water, but gosh, that is such a mess. As I tried earlier to say but so-uneloquently put, I hope your town can turn this negative event into a positive thing for your future.

Oh my...and we need rain up here in NCK!!!

I am so sorry!
May you have many blessings from this--as the river floods bring nutrients to the soil for benefits of plant and animal, may this flood bring you "nutrients" and a better life as well!

Hey everyone. It's starting to finally dry out here in Coffeyville. The whole east side of our town is pretty much gone. When you see flood damage on TV, it doesn't do it justice. My family was very forunate not to receive any damage, however my office building is a total loss. We were able to get almost all of our office equipment and files out.

Take care and keep Coffeyville in your prayers.

Trish

It is good to see that everyone is doing well. It is a really busy summer for me. Fixing up the new house and packing the old one. Starting a new business with hubby also. Lots of changes, although sorry to say that the weight has stayed the same. Take care everyone and good luck. Ladybug emoticon

I don't know about the rest of my fellow Kansans, but I'm fed up with the rain for now. I know bite my tongue b/c once Aug gets here, we'll probably be begging for it. But right now I've had it. In the past two weeks we've had 5 softball games cancelled due to the rain. Okay, thanks for letting me vent. Take care and have a great day.

If I knew we was going to get all this rain I would have lanted the corn the other day it would have had a great start with all this rain My poor wheat though don't look to good that freeze sure did a number on it may just till it all back up and plant corn. I'll have to get a bigger freezer for it all or sell what we can't eat at the farmers market this year but the goats and sheep will like it too this fall.

Laraine,

I was so proud to open my emails today and see your post on walking. I have been extremely busy and pushing my exercise out of the way, after 3 months of great progress. I will start again right now to get back on track. I am pretty happy with my weight, but I'm not happy with my eating and exercise patterns. So thanks agains for the boost, and I will try to be more consistent with my posts!

Sonia,
I have lost my weight following the princples of this site. Eat right, count calories, and exercise. Although I must admit that I have been really lax with the exercise lately. I really need to get back on a schedule.

So, if you do a video, such as walk away the pounds, does that count towards the miles? Or is it just outside walking?

Laraine,
Sounds like fun to me. Where do we post our miles walked? On this page or on the team page? Let me know, cuz I plan on doing a lot of walking this spring. Gotta lose that additional 30 or so.

Silverkelz,
I will add my congrats to your graduation as well. I too know how long it takes to get through school. I got my first degree in the average four years, but my Masters took a little longer as I did it through night classes and was a mom and wife at the same time. I too am a teacher. I love my job and wouldn't do anything else. My advice on losing while teaching is pack snacks that are healthy and avoid the starchy school lunches as much as possible. I pack my lunch most days and reserve my eating at school to those days they fix something really yummy and adjust my calories accordingly. Best of luck as you venture out into the wonderful world of teaching and molding young minds. What is your teaching area? I teach special education at all levels K-12 in a very small district in the northwest part of the state.

Silverkelz, Congrad's on your graduation. I am a teacher myself, and the only advice I can give you as far as weight loss is "STAY AWAY from FOOD in the TEACHERS LOUNGE!!!!!!!!!!' We learn in school that flour and water make glue, and when you add all of the extras like eggs and sugar it sticks too you. I find a lot of these sort of science experiments as some call them lurking in the lounge saying, "Eat ME!"

I am glad that you are enjoying your student teaching, and hope that your first job will also be one that you enjoy and learn from. Take care. Shari.

Hi everyone! I joined spark earlier this week and found this group and like the thought of others being so close!

I live in Manhattan and am graduating in May at the age of 27. It was a long haul to get here, but I am so excited I could burst!

Right now I am doing my student teaching in Topeka and am loving it. However, it takes all my freetime so motivation is hard to come by now!

Haven't done well with the exercise challenge, but my diet is improving. So this is a step in the right direction. For me it is baby steps at this time. Take care ladies, I now have a new walkman, so plan to try walking some this afternoon if I get a chance. Shari. emoticon

Hi all,
Well I worked out three different days this week and logged 180 mins of cardio. I also walked almost 11 miles on the treadmill. How did everyone else do with the exercise challenge?

Yes.. PLEASE HURRY BACK!!

It's so nasty dreary outside today. Looks likes there's precipitation up in those clouds, but weather.com just says cloudy. The snow is supposed to come Saturday. :(

Morning everyone hope you are all doing great with all your snow. I got a story to pass along .......

Finally, President Bush and I agree on something. He came right out and said it in the other night's State of the Union speech: ”America is addicted to oil.”
Of course, he's talking about the oil we use to run our cars and heat our homes, not the kind that's clogging our arteries. The problem with his kind of oil is that there's only a finite amount of it to meet an ever-growing global demand.
No such shortage with the kind of oil that fuels our French fry fetish! Our nation's deep fryers are filled to capacity, always at the ready to meet the demand for deep fried donuts. But our fondness for fatty foods is widening our waists, shortening our lives, and ballooning our health care costs.
Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Nicholas Kristof has finally dared, this week, to say in public what I've been saying privately for years: Americans are at far greater risk of heart attacks than terrorist attacks:
“Imagine if Al Qaeda had resolved to attack us not with conventional chemical weapons but by slipping large amounts of high-fructose corn syrup into our food supply. That would finally rouse us to action — but in fact it’s pretty much what we’re doing to ourselves.”
As Kristof observes, “Obesity is reducing not only the quality of life of Americans, but also the fiscal soundness of our government and the competitiveness of our businesses.”
Doesn't that qualify as a crisis worthy of a presidential counter-offensive? One Republican who's championing the cause of healthier habits is Mike Huckabee, the formerly fat, newly enlightened Governor of Arkansas.
Huckabee was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes back in 2003, and given about 10 years to live. Evidently, the prospect of dying inspired Huckabee to make some drastic changes. Today, he's about 120 pounds lighter, his diabetes is cured, and he runs marathons.
Now that he's the perfect poster boy for the benefits of eating well and exercising, Huckabee's trying to convert the entire state of Arkansas to a healthier way of life. He recounts his odyssey from foodaholic to anti-obesity crusader in a self-help memoir, “Quit Digging Your Grave With a Knife and Fork: A 12- Stop Program to End Bad Habits and Begin a Healthy Lifestyle.“
Maybe Huckabee can convince President Bush to launch an initiative to fight our other oil addiction. How about it, Mike? The next State of the Union is a whole year away. If you start now, there's no telling what you could accomplish.

I do! I do! Well, it takes the edge off for me. There is a product called Premysn. It is like Motrin, but has something that calms me down. Sorry, don't remember where you are, but if you are near a Walgreens, look for it there. Or order it online, which is what I do cuz I live way out. Hope it helps.

Speaking of PMS...I always get irritated the week before I start my period. Does anyone have a remedy for this besides high salt/high sugar treats?
