I have been running a 15 minute mile-with spots of brisk walking. I use my heart rate monitor and it screams at me that I am running.

I am disappointed in Sparks in regards to the Fitness log and running/jogging/walking times. I am, at 285 pounds, one of the many overweight people on here trying to get healthy. To run a 15 minute mile is a huge workout for me as well as a quick and efficient one(which is why I do it). I am running my first 5K Sat and registered as a runner. If I register as a runner I can walk some, if I register as a walker I have to walk.

It was a bit of a blow to see that I am not considered a runner here on Sparks but also an incentive to hustle. emoticon

I WISH I could a 13 minute mile! LOL That's a few pounds down down the road though, so until then I'll keep RUNNING at the speed I go...slow! This journey is not a race and there is no finish line, so I don't worry so much about my speed. I just want to keep on RUNNING!

I too wish I was running a 13 minute mile. I only started in May and have just progressed from 16 to 14 with walking and some spurts of running. I'll keep adding more until I'm totally running. But I do consider myself a runner and not a walker. Not sure why they list a time at all to differentiate between walking and running. In most competitions, if you run at all during your "walking" then you are to be considered a runner not a walker.

A goal without a plan is just a wish.

Last Saturday I "ran" my 5 mile race. I did it in 57 minutes, well under the 90 min. time limit. I think my pace was 11.35 and it sure felt like running to me.

The race is not always to the swift, but to those who keep on running.

So glad to see this thread. I have been "running" since February. I started running a 15 min. mile. After several months, I am now only running about a 13 min mile. It doesn't seem like much, but progress is there. Before, I would alternate between walking and jogging. Nowadays, I can "run" a straight mile without walking. That is a big deal to me. I may not be a fast runner, but I am a runner nonetheless. Keep up the good work everyone!

I run a 15 minute mile right now, and my speed has increased over the past few weeks. I don't get it, because I am a fast walker (when walking with others I often have to slow my pace). I suppose the extra weight doesn't help. And I'm built more for swimming than running.

I think I will get a HR monitor so I have a better picture of how many calories I'm burning because, given my effort, I can't imagine the Spark estimate is accurate.

I don't train for races; I'm allergic to crowds and competition. I do this for myself, so everyday I get out there I consider an accomplishment. Even if I remain a penguin.

This is a great Thread! I think my average is around a 14 now. Started out much much higher and over time has come down. I use to say I just walked and then I said I jog alittle. Now I say I AM A RUNNER and very proud of it.
My running speed might not be very fast but it is mine and no one can take that away!

The speed limits on running v. walking always made me indignant. So I got a HR monitor and punched in my calories manually! As a runner!!!

I'd love a 13 minute mile. I'm averaging 14-15 right now. But I have noticed, on the treadmill, anyway, that when I started out, I was going at about a 4.2mph pace and have worked it up to 4.6 or 4.7mph.

This discussion is a GREAT help to me! I was VERY concerned about my times/speed. I was kind of feeling a little discouraged because the times in the system make me feel that I need to speed things up! I feel good about my progress so I'm committed to keep pushing forward one day, my way, at a time! lol

Peles Jewel,

Great attitude! Also, it's nice to see someone else who runs at the pace I do.

I just completed my 1st 5k and my pace was 13:30. I was thrilled by that time since most of my training runs were at 14-15. When I looked at the official results, I noticed there were two women ages 70 and 71 years old with a pace of 10:18 and 11:13 respectively! I smiled and said - there you go...these women are my new inspiration!! Running your own race is really the best way to go.

My HRM tells me I am running ;). For longer runs can I can't break 4.4 miles per hour. I figure that is my happy pace :). One day it will be 4.5 and I'll celebrate!

I guarentee you, you burned more calories than if you had walked that pace. I am trying to break a 13 min mile myself.

I used to "run" a 15 min mile but after losing 60 lbs and more importantly, got of my beta blocker I now "run" a 12 min mile. Granted there are walkers faster than me, it still feels like running. I can defiantly tell a difference in effort, I don't sweat near as much walking. My company is a having a 5 mile on July 24 and when the first started advertising it they said runners only, as they are having 2 mile for walkers. I thought, well then, Do I qualify as a runner? Time limit is 90 min, which I should be able to do. It sorta angers me this time limit. The race is part of the Subway Challenge series and this year they added a walking division. If someone wants to challenge themselves to 5 miles why should a Bee Healthy run sponsored by a healthcare facility discourage them? The only other Subway Challenge race with a time limit is the two half marathons, which is 3 1/2 hours. I might finish last, but I'll show them, I AM a runner.

I still say I "jog" not run, and I averaged about a 16 minute mile for my first 5k (which was fast walking with bursts of jogging). When I walk on the treadmill, I walk around 3.0 and 3.5mph and I jog between 4.0 and 4.5mph. :)

John "The Penguin" Bingham signed the back of my race bib for the Seattle RNR Marathon I just did. He's funnier as a writer; nonetheless, he was interesting to listen to.

Of course he wrote, "waddle on!" on my bib. :)

I, too, "RUN" at a bit over a 13 min/mi and really don't like entering it as "walking".

I found the following tid bit on runnersworld.com and really liked it:
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I AM NOT A JOGGER
I may waddle when I run, but I'm running all the same!
~ By John Bingham

I AM A RUNNER because my runs have names. I do tempo runs and threshold runs and fartlek runs. I do long, slow runs and track workouts. My runs are defined, even if my abs are not.

I AM A RUNNER because my shoes are training equipment, not a fashion statement. The best shoe for me is the one that makes me a better runner. I choose the shoe that goes with my running mechanics, not my running outfit.

I AM A RUNNER because I don't have running outfits. I have technical shirts and shorts and socks. I have apparel that enhances the experience of running by allowing me to run comfortably. I can say "Coolmax" and "Gore-Tex" in the same sentence and know which does what.

I AM A RUNNER because I know what effort feels like, and I embrace it. I know when I'm pushing the limits of my comfort and why I'm doing it. I know that heavy breathing and an accelerated heart rate--things I once avoided--are necessary if I want to be a better runner.

I AM A RUNNER because I value and respect my body. It will whisper to me when I've done too much. And if I choose to listen to that whisper, my body won't have to scream in pain later on.

I AM A RUNNER because I am willing to lay it all on the line. I know that every finish line has the potential to lift my spirits to new highs or devastate me, yet I line up anyway.

I AM A RUNNER because I know that despite my best efforts, I will always want more from myself. I will always want to know my limits so that I can exceed them.

I AM A RUNNER because I run. Not because I run fast. Not because I run far.

I AM A RUNNER because I say I am. And no one can tell me I'm not.

Waddle on my friends!!

I'm doing about a 16-17min mile on the treadmill and yes, it's a run for me not a walk. the only thing that matters is we are doing it and speed will come with distance and time. My treadmill speed is 3.7 mph so you're fast if compared to me.

Hey, it sounds like running to me! You ran about 4.5 mph; my little short legs require me to start running at about 4.2 mph (or so the treadmill says.)

Way to go!!

I went out and ran a mile on the track by my house to see exactly what my mile time is now. . .it turns out it's 13 minutes 30 seconds, which according to Sparkpeople (and probably most of the planet) is walking.

I laughed when I logged it on my fitness tracker because I had to log it as walking, but my lungs and knees are 100% certain I was running. If I were to go by the way they feel, I ran a 6 minute mile. . .anyway, it just made me chuckle so I thought I'd share.
