I'm here for you! As long as you'll do the same :) I keep falling off the wagon, getting frustrated, and resenting my lack of commitment! Let's get this fitness party started :)

Just take five minutes to regroup, and don't ever forget to make time for what makes you happy.

Wow this was posted a while ago but I have to say you made a very good point. I think it does depend on the exercise you do and the foods you eat. I believe everyone is different and must find what works for them to lose weight.

Has anyone ever thought that it is not what we eat or how much we exercise but HOW we eat and HOW we exercise? I think weight loss is a lot, if not more, about habits. I have realized that keeping up with my "good habit goals" like: not eating in front of the TV or mixing cardio with strength at least 4 times a week does a lot more than just calorie counting on our food and elliptical machines.

I agree! 10 minutes of activities each day is a great goal. With classes and other obligations, its hard to make yourself set off time to exercise.
I also suggest that a goal be drinking 8 or more glasses of water a day.

My short term goal:
Lose 10 pounds by July 1st.

This might be too simple but I find it sometimes really hard to fit in exercising each day. I'm reading the Spark and I'm thinking a team goal could be to attempt to get at the minimum 10 minutes of activity in each day. 10 minutes is all it takes!

Ha! I'm the complete opposite. I'm always the last one finished eating. It's a little weird chowing down while everyone else is watching and waiting for you to be done, but I like to enjoy my food, plus it gives me indigestion when I eat too fast.

I actually told two people today about SP and they joined as soon as I was done talking about it! They absolutely love it and even though the three of us are new to SP, it is so helpful and such a relief to find other college girls like us who are looking to lose weight and a healthy environment to discuss our real life issues and goals. This website is so much more than just weight loss! I love it!

How about encouraging someone to join SP! If it is a friend, you can keep each other motivated on (and off) the computer. It will also motivate you to stay on track.

This seems silly, but I think it is also brilliant.
I have a friend that had bariatric surgery. I don't think surgery is the way for me to go, but after her surgery her doctor told her to eat with a baby spoon to train her to take smaller bites. It also helps her to chew her food properly. Because she takes more bites that are smaller, she feels full faster (though I'm sure the surgery helped this too). Logically though, smaller bites would be able to go down easier and thus entering the stomach faster. So instead of food sitting in your esophagus waiting to get to your stomach, it will already be there.
Eating with a baby or "small" spoon. (They do make ones without the rubber stuff.) Atleast when you are at home. Any response?

i don't know about everyone else but one of my goals is definitely to slow down when i'm eating! i always tend to scarf down my food so fast and i don't realize that i'm really full. especially when i'm eating with others i always seem to finish my food before they finish theirs and then i eat more becaues they're still eating. i want to be able to enjoy my food, not inhale it, and listen to my body when it says i'm full!

I love this goal! It makes your teeth whiter and prettier- while also curbing your eating. =)

A new team goal that includes how you eat your meal has been included in the list of Team Goals for the month of March.

Some wanna no eating after a certain hours like 7 or 8, but that's actually okay as long as you're not eating like 2 hours before you go to bed which is the "clean eating" rule that's included.

There's others listed also, with @ least one including something about snacks. So please everyone go and check it out.

The first couple of days were really hard with the late night eating. I usually drink a bottled water or a huge glass of water before I go to bed. Occassionally, I will have a light string cheese or a chocolate biscotti. These do not have too many calories. This is if I have some extra calories left over.

Hey, I don't know about anyone else but sometimes I tend to eat to the point where I'm like bursting. So maybe a goal aimed towards cutting the amount of food eaten at one sitting?

I think that is a fantastic goal and I'd love to work on that too. I often feel like have too much work to do so I don't take the time to have a real break. I eat in front of the computer all of the time and then eat much more than I intend to.

One thing I have problems with is saying "no" when someone has brought food unexpectedly to work or school. I know they do it with good intentions, but those 3 pieces of cake each week could add up to a lot of calories. I think since this would be my first goal, I would have to start with saying "no" to unplanned meals for atleast 3 weeks, until I start thinking about whether I'm hungry or not and whether or not the food is something I should eat.

So my first goal: Say "NO" to unplanned meals for 3 weeks. I'll have to add that to my goals and keep track of it.

Team Goal Suggestion: Most of my eating habits come with the stress of being at the computer... instead of taking a true break (mental and physical) away from the computer I grab some food and keep working, or check my email. My mind, nor my eyes get the break it needs. My goal, which I would love to offer up to anyone else is to NOT EAT WHILE WORKING ON THE COMPUTER. I think even laying in bed listening to a song would be more relaxing, taking a walk around the block while talking to a friend. Or making a propper snack and enjoying.

Anyone care to join me in this goal?? I am going to try it for 10 days.. depending on how it goes I will modify my goal and repost Nov. 1st as a month long goal. msg me with any thoughts!!!

I agree with the three week period for the habits...I'm on my third week of working out and I know that if I can get this week going, I will be set.

On a side note...It's kind of interesting to see how the health and fitness goals affect grades. I feel like I have become stronger in my studies since I started working out and going to bed earlier. And the nice thing is, you can get class reading done in the gym, leaving you more time to enjoy life..

I agree with once a month. Make one good thing a habit and then start another goal. After a while, none of it will be something we have to think about, it will just be something we do.

You raise an excellent point, but it usually takes three weeks to make or break a habit, so instead of doing one once a week, how about once a month? That way that allows the three weeks to make the goal a habit in our daily life.

I agree with MLG394, but I feel that we can start to become "overwhelmed" with goals to keep up with, ya know? Maybe instead of like adding on one a week, we can add one on when we can show consistency with acheiving that goal.

I like the idea of adding a new goal every week. that way, we can put most of our focus onto one thing until we get "used" to it and then begin to focus on another.

i also think the academic goals are a good idea along with the weight and exercise goals. it's important to remember that sparkpeople is about lifestyle, not diet, and i guess that means academics too, right? so we'd be striving for healthy habits in all aspects of our lives.

meal planning (i try to plan 2 a week)
calorie intake/calories lost
cardio/strength minutes
days exercised in general
grades
amount of sleep
drinking water
posting messages (how about make a point to talk to someone new every week?)
try a new exercise
try a new recipe

i know a lot of those were borrowed but i like them

sounds like a plan about the inches.

But I also think you need something for school goal. Like perhaps getting all your homework and papers in every week. Or how about make a schedule for a day or two a week.

I have the lbs lost goal on other teams too, and although its a bunch of people, they have a hard time hitting the goal. I'm thinking about putting in another option for losing inches. Since sometimes people gain the weight maybe due to muscle but lose inches.

What does everyone think?

Caelyn sounds like you've hit a plateau. You probably need to shake up something in your diet like your exercise but moreso your caloric intake.

Here's a link to an SP page on it:

I love the list of goals so far. My suggestion is to maybe try them all at once, but concentrate on adding one goal a week. That way, if you don't meet all of your goals, you can at least say "well, I met the one goal this week that I was trying to make into a habit". We'll just add on a new goal or two every week. I'm suggesting this so that we won't get too discouraged and give up if we don't meet them all at once.
My goals this week- try to go to bed at a decent hour and start tracking my calories.

The one that worries me is the weight loss goal. I've been stuck at 210 for quite awhile, so I am starting to lose faith that I'll manage to lose 4lbs this month.

I can't fail if I don't quit.

I like the goals, except for the 1000 fitness minutes a month. That's 32 minutes a day, every day, for the entire month. I think it's way too unrealistic. I personally am only scheduled to work out 30 minutes a day, 4 days a week.

Well, we'll stay with what we have for July but I already thought about adding a mile or step goal for the entire team.

Ok, out of those goals I think the best one would be setting a goal for posting messages for this team. It would be a great way to get current members involved.

I was thinking since our leader isn't really around to set goals, we could actually get a google spreadsheet and track everything like that. We could just set down and put in stone what goals we wanna do and I can set a spreadsheet up.

I also was thinking a sleep hours related team goal. I'm doing okay with the sleeping right now with it being summer, but I get pretty bad during the school year, staying awake until 2 am the night before a test (and then starting to study, lol)

Here's a good one...if everyone would read these goals (or even interact in this team) we could meet the goals below.

Perhaps one of our team goals could be related to the number of hours of sleep we get each night (since so many college students are so sleep-deprived... and getting a decent amount of sleep is so so important).

I'm so happy you're going to define some goals! Some ideas: Tracking workout times, amount of steps to take in a day, making at least one meal a day a conscious one that isn't in front of the tv or PC, substituting processed snack foods with fruits and veggies when studing, exercise at a defined amount at least per week, strecthing daily, giving yourself a motivational pep talk once a day, writting in a journal daily.... lol I could keep going but those are a few.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

Keep moving

your analogy is perfect and i am right there with you.

i am kind of obsessed with assessment right now in my classes and so my suggestion for a team goal is related. I think something measureable would be best. Like a certain number of cardio minutes for the team to finish, or calories burned. I also like the streak idea but it might need to be more defninte- rather than seeing how many days we can do it maybe a series of steps with finite deadlines. For example, five days within your range, then another ten, then another twenty, until you dont even have to think about anymore.

I think a team goal would be fantastic. Just like mentioned before it does make people work harder. But remember people have to be here and work hard cause they want to, but it always helps to have motivation..
So I don't think this is a bad idea at all.

Yea. i would like to participate in a team goal. I feel like it just might be the jump start I need. I like Chris's Idea as well, but I am too clear. Are we talking about school or are we trying to apply the concept of school to our diet and fitness?

I like Chris's idea....

but if you're going for dietary/fitness goals, I think a good streak would be staying within your calorie range every day. I'm having major trouble staying within mine. I kind of feel like I'm playing 21; I feel like I get 19 and keep saying "hit me" until I hit 37. I hope that analogy makes sense. :)

I think a good one would be to challenge everyone to try and get an A. Sometimes there are students that are B's and C's. I think that if we all can get A's that would be awesome. This would be a hard challenge, but it would push every member to remember we are going to school to better ourselves not just to get a better job. That is really not the reason to go to school. I mean it is only part of it. Trying to get the whole team to compete for an A would make you use the most valuable asset we have OUR BRAINS.

I'm hoping to create some team goals for our group, but I need a little feedback from everyone on what a good goal for our team might be. Any suggestions?
