Sounds wonderful Slinky!! I grew up in a warm climate area too and always have missed it. Maybe someday I'll get to Florida and be a snow bird too. Many of my relatives have retired there and want us to come down. I have looked on the internet for housing and it seems very nice, small but nice. Especially the over 55 areas where they have organized activities, swimming pool etc. I could go for a good game of shuffle board or bingo now and then...lol.
I do worry about the hurricaines though as my relatives have experienced a few of those. But not matter where you live it is always something with the weather.

All my life it was my dream to end up in Florida. Maybe it's because when I was a toddler we lived here, and my memories of a struggling young family in a warm place stuck with me well enough to re-surface when I came within 10 years of retirement age and started noticing the intolerance to cold.

Anyway, here I am in a sleeveless top and summery print cotton skirt, where I did my walk just before lunch and at 2 walked another few blocks to our clubhouse for a community meeting.

After dinner we went to the grocery store, and it was a jolt to see a brass band playing Christmas music, while the shoppers were in shorts, tank tops and sandals. There were free samples in all parts of the store to welcome the snowbirds back for the season, and I even got a sip of cheap Zinfandel wine (not good enough to buy). Some shoppers seemed to have their whole dinner there sampling all the freebies. LOL!

Anyway, I did my exercises after getting all the groceries put away and then put my feet up to enjoy a glass of wine.

I am the same way Slinky. The cold just goes right through me. I have a real hard time in the refrigerated section when I am shopping...lol. I think I was meant to live elsewhere too!

My fingers go numb when they get cold, and my hands turn red, white and blue. It takes a good half hour after getting into a warm building for the color and feeling to come back into my fingers. Even pushing a grocery cart in a cool grocery store causes the numbness. I was never meant to live where they have winter.

Thank you Slinky and Pam.

I think I have the Reynaud's Disease too. My feet freeze terribly summer and winter. I have enough confirmed dignoses I don't need another...lol.

Your weather sounds beautiful Slinky-wish I could just take off and go.

Von, I just read about your hubby's big win. That's wonderful! As his "first lady" I know you had a big hand in his success. Congratulations to you both.

I'm sorry to hear about your weather-related discomfort. I have Raynaud's syndrome, which I've almost forgotten since I moved into the deep South. Every Christmas I go back to visit the kids in Ohio, and I am again reminded about the pain caused by cold weather.

The solution is to retire and move to beautiful Florida. LOL. It's not for everybody, but it sure is for me! Yesterday's walk on the beach, seeing the sand sculpture competition, and sitting at an outside table with full view of the water of the Gulf was a poignant reminder of why we love it here. We watched dolphins feeding as well as the pelicans, gulls and other birds, and then there was that gorgeous sunset on the water that holds everyone spellbound.

You should at least come down here for a weekend to celebrate your victory.

Hello Everyone....

Von, thank you for sharing the information about your sweet pets. I would love to have a small inside dog, but I don't think I am currently at home enough to go through the "puppy" stage. PLUS, my cats might really take offense if a frisky puppy came into the household. LOL...My frisky one year old cat "Freedom," is almost too much for my senior cat, "Cricket." However, Freedom might meet her match if a puppy was brought in, and perhaps she would leave Cricket alone..LOL.

Oh, Congratulations to your husband! I only picked up bits and pieces of the conversation, so I missed the details, but I am very happy for him and his running mates.

Still a lot of things going on around here. Saturday was my youngest son's 23rd birthday. I gave him an I-Pod and some money. Next Friday is my oldest son's 34th birthday. Then it's Thanksgiving and then Christmas...(Cha Ching!!!!). Gonna have to take on another job...LOL.

Have a wonderful and blessed day!

Good Morning...actually, I haven't been to bed yet, but it didn't seem appropriate to say, Good Evening, at this hour of the morning. How about just beginning with a big old "Howdy, from Tennessee!"

I sort of got behind on checking in. Things do get busy around here, but I think staying busy beats the alternative.

Yes, Von I do like cats. I was really never much of a cat person in the past because we've always had big dogs outside, and having a cat or cats never really much occurred to me. However, a couple of years ago, my youngest son mentioned how much he would like to have a cat, so I said, "Let's get two kittens," and that is just what we did. They are two years old now. About this time last year, my neice adopted a senior cat, for what reason, I don't know because she "forgot" to check with her mom before taking all of this on. So, she called and asked if he could stay with me until she could get an apartment in something like about 6 months. I said, "Sure." After I had him for about two minutes, I thought, "She is NOT getting this one back," and she hasn't. Of course, a little of that had to do with the fact that he was ill a couple of months after I had him, and the vet bill was over $200, so I asked if she just wanted to let me have him, and she jumped right on that offer. He is 11 now, and so sweet, just like my other two. Then about the same time last year that I got the senior cat, I began to feed a little stray kitten who'd been abandoned in a park near my home. After three months of feeding the little one, she finally trusted me enough to let me pick her up. By that time, the weather was getting very cold, so I brought her home with me. Little "Freedom" completed my family of cats. They are all spayed or neutered, and stay inside 24/7, and rule the roost. So, I guess one could say, "Yes, I like cats very much." LOL

Good Morning Linda,
Yes, My Richard Simmons Tapes are old ones. I love music. I would rather dance than any other cardio but try to mix it up. Pilates looks wonderful. I really need that as it concentrates on the core. I injured my back some years ago and I always thought that would be beneficial.

I woke up at 4am,No exercise as of yet.
Have a good day at work.

I used to have Richard Simmons' DVD's and Vhs. I now have Denise Austin's. I did her Boot Camp DVD. That was a workout. I also have a few Winsor Pilates and I did tape Fit & Lite and Daily Workout as it is on when I am getting ready for work.

I'm doing good today. Exercised for 1 hr.

You must be a cat lover Pam! DH and I love Dogs and cats.

I keep saying I am going to get a stability ball. I really need to get into more strength exercise. I wish I could keep up with you and Linda! Linda does pilates too. I have 3 Billy Blank tapes. I always wanted to do Tae Bo. One day it threw my back out so I am back to Richard Simmons...lol. I do strength training throughout the day but want to use more weights and bands.

I also like the Stability ball. It really works those abs by just trying to stay upright...LOL. There are a lot of other exercises one can do which get easier with practice. I have no luck having one here in my home. I've purchased two and my cats have pierced each of them with their claws. So, unless I get four cats declawed, I will only be able to use the Stability ball when working out at the gym...LOL.

Hello Linda and Everyone Else. I am doing well today, and yesterday was a beautiful day here in southwest Tennessee. Linda, you mentioned doing exercises at you desk, have you tried sitting on a Stability Ball at various intervals throughout the day, while at your desk? I have not tried this because I do not have a desk job, but I've read articles about it, probably here at SparkPeople, and it is mentioned as another good way to work exercise into a busy work day.

Good morning everyone. Just stopping by to see how everyone is doing today and how they did yesterday.
Portion control and water is good. I'm stretching twice a day. I even do this at work as I sit at a desk for 6 hrs. I have a cubicle so the other girl in my department cannot see how funny I look. I've done crunches in my seat, squats, etc.

Hello Von,

Thank you for the helpful tips. Actually, I began doing the things on the Spark Points list some time ago, and yes, all of that information is extremely motivating and encouraging. I learn a jillion new things each day...LOL. Matter of fact, I think I could spend hours on the computer each day just being logged into "SparkPeople." Getting involved in the message boards and teams is the last thing that I've done, and I am really enjoying making friends and getting ideas from those with whom I have corresponded. Thank you for your help and kind words of encouragement.

Good Pam,
We are glad you are here. It must be hard after so many years of marriage to get a divorce. But I am so glad to see you doing things for you. That is a big step in the right direction!

I would encourage you to go to your my points page.(On the far right of your screen at the top) and do everything that is there each day. This page has so many wonderful things to keep you motivated. Also if you read the articles (3 pts each) you gain a wealth of information that will help you along your way.

Each day be sure to
drink 8 glasses of water
at least 5 fruits and veggies.
3 milk servings
a multivitamin
2 good oils (like 2 tsp olive oil)

Get exercise in.
cardio
strength
stretch
All 3 are very important.

Good luck to you!
Von

Hello Everyone...I am new to the team, and I do thank all of you for such a very "welcoming" welcome. I am very happy to have discovered this team, and I hope to make new friends while also learning new ideas about nutrition, health, and fitness. I have just recently become divorced, (after a 40 year marriage), and I find that I have mostly been "doing for others," for all of those years. Now, I find that I basically have to only "do for myself," and that is such a strange and odd feeling. I tend to keep busy, but yet it seems that I do not get much accomplished, so I need to get myself organized, and "into the swing," of a routine that works for me. Right now, I am still on the path of thinking about a lot of things that I "might" do. Any ideas, suggestions, or "pushes," to help me get motivated into doing things for just "me" will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Von! Glad you're doing well.

I'm doing even better than yesterday. I got in a 70 minute walk this morning, and this afternoon did all my exercises. Hubby and I had to run some errands after dinner instead of taking our walk, but I ended up with well over 12,000 steps for the day.

My calories came to 1215, and logging my dinner showed me that I should not take in any more calories via wine. So I resisted the temptation, which made me feel strong.

Hi Team,
How is everyone today?
I am doing well. The last few days have been a little hectic, but now that halloween is over hopefully we will get back to normal. I did not gain over halloween, thankfully. In fact I was down a pound this am! Hope you all are doing well.

Four ounces? That's probably just a little water or intestinal contents. I'm very glad my scale just reads by .5 increments. I'm staying at 110 now and only when I overdo the salt late it goes to 110.5, so I advanced my ticker. I really was ambivalent about admitting I had reached my goal, because the grip on a finish line is pretty tenuous and one can slip back easily. I've hovered around this goal for over a month, going from just below to just above many times. Today I decided to just declare the battle won and see how well I hold onto my victory.

I hope the rest of you are having a great day and being good to yourselves.

I'm doing great! I had to dodge a few raindrops on my morning walk, but it cleared off quickly and I got in 75 minutes. We had to run some errands, so I still have to do my 20 minutes of exercises before dinner. Guess I'd better hop to it!

Have a good day.

I must have done great, because I'm really tired. I had a lot of stuff to do around the house, like laundry, cooking, dishes, changing linens, etc., but I got 70 minutes of walking done early, and also did my exercises after the last batch of laundry was put away. After dinner and cleanup, hubby and I went for our walk. I just thank God I can do all these things. I know people younger than I who can't.
I am so blessed.

I always did that too Slinky. Putting it on first thing in the am. I have one that talks and does all kinds of stuff but I found it to be inaccurate in the Steptember Challenge with AOM.

So I collected 3 UPC codes from Lean cusine and sent away for a free one from AOM and lean cusine and it is simple but accurate.

I'll try to remember tomorrow to put it on.
Have a great day.

I always attach my pedometer when I get dressed in the morning, and I don't take it off until I undress at night.

I joined a challenge long ago to walk at least 10,000 steps a day, and I've kept at it ever since I bought the pedometer ($5 at Wal-Mart). With the long morning walk (70 minutes again today), I usually have my 10,000 steps in by noon or shortly after. I'm doing laundry today, so I'll end up with another big day.

Good morning Slinkie,
From your post on the 27th:
"Like they say, when one door closes, another one opens. Each obstacle overcome strengthens you for the next battle. I think faith in God and in yourself is most important no matter what your goals are."

This is so true. Yes, obstacles definately make you stronger and if the Lord brings you to it, he'll see you through it.

You're doing great I see from your post on the 28th.

It's been a beautiful day here. I did my morning walk, 75 minutes around our community. After lunch I did my exercises. We did some shopping in the afternoon, and took our evening walk after dinner. I ended up with well over 15,000 steps for the day.

My weight this morning before breakfast was 110.5. Calories today: 1134

My years as a transcriptionist took a toll on my body, and I became prone to back troubles as well as a general weakening, so I made a lot of effort to walk in my free time, weather permitting. I belonged to a YMCA "Litercise" class which I attended regularly for a few years, but my work schedule changed and I dropped that. Then hubby died (heart disease) and my whole life changed. I had been secondary to him for 38 years, and suddenly I became the head of the family with one kid still in college, so I had to become a whole different person as a single mom in charge.

Two years later I met the man of my dreams, and we were married the next summer, when I retired and moved in with my new hubby. This chapter of my life has been glorious, and I thank God every day for giving me the strength and determination to do the right thing for myself, to stay in control and enjoy life.

My hubby and I both started our weight loss journey in January together. We still splurge now and then but we decided last year that this was going to be a healthy change of eating for us for life.

You might be older than me but you sound quite active! That is fantastic. I see you worked in a hospital. I was a floor Nurse for years and it took a toll on my back. So some times I am not up to par on certain exercises. Linda, my co-leader here is the exercise person, she is great at it.
You have a good night,

I try to be consistent. I see from reading some of your threads that you are much stricter about what you eat than I am, but I have a big man to feed at the same time, so I do my best to give him enough of the things he needs as well as a few of those he likes. He has dropped about 15 pounds too, so we are both benefitting from SP.

I think the exercise is every bit as important as the healthy food choices. At least for someone my age it is. I see the people around me who look much older than they are, simply because they have become sedentary and they gain a lot of weight. I walk every day, at least an hour, and usually more. That's helping my arthritis and osteoporosis, as well as keeping my blood pressure low and has brought my cholesterol down.

I realize that I'm a lot older than you, but I'm not yet in the "rocking chair" set, and I generally keep up with the younger people well enough.

I am low today on calories, but it's too close to bedtime for snacking. I tend to go under one day and high range the next, and so far it has worked just fine.

I did my walking, 70 minutes this morning, and 11,000 steps for the day (still have my pedometer on). I also did all my scheduled strength and core exercises, about 20 minutes.

Spark points show 99 right now, but I still have a few things to check off.

Did good with my food today. Had a serving of fruit and veggie. I do have a question about ICBINB. I use Promise margarine. Is ICBINB better?

How are you doing today?..'Commitment Circle'

This is the most important thread that we will have on our team. So please don't skim
over it. Read it, digest it, and make your decision to totally commit or not.

One of the most important things on our healthy weight maintenance journey is support.
This thread is our Commitment Circle. We come in here throughout the day and
say how we are doing, good and bad. This is not a choice, this is where we recommit.
If you feel you don't need to come in here to say how you are doing, please come in to
support your team mates. Everyone on the team needs to do this if we are to maintain our
goals or to get back on track.

This is a kick in the pants-we either commit and put our whole selves into this
mind, body and spirit or we don't. The choice is yours.

1. How are you doing with your food?...not just food but your choices. Are you still eating
white bread, pastas, and sugar? This is a healthy life style change. These are not healthy
and are counter productive to your goals. What about oils, butter and salad dressing?
Why aren't you using ICBINB on your toast and veggies? Spray olive oil for cooking?
skim mik, non fat cheeses.

2. Also portion control--Are you measuring everything that goes in your mouth?
Are you writing it down or just trying to remember it?
* Anything throughout the day, that piece of cake at work or your childs' leftover
piece of meat, anything you were going to put in your mouth that isn't in your plan
---put in a baggie--see at the end of the day what you would have ate. You might not
think that little bite here or there adds up but at the end of the day --you will see.

3.Exercise is very important in so many ways. You need cardio -your heart pumping
for 30 minutes at least 3 times a week. Are you consistently doing stretching and
Strength exercises? Are you doing any exercise each day?

4. Learn to say no. Be prepared around family and friends. Anything that takes away
from your goals--whether it is the wrong foods or not being able to do your exercise
due to other people wanting you to do different. Are you able to say no?

5. Support: This is one of the most important aspects of healthy weight loss and maintence.
And this is why we have this team. We need to be more supportive of each other.
We need to be more helpful and give each other ideas. When we are messing up we need
to tell our team mates and our team mates need to tell us to get back on the wagon.
We need to tell our team mates different food choices to make. Do you know what you
are and are not suppose to eat? Are you supporting your team mates totally?

This is not an easy road, it takes total commitment. You have to really want it and
commit -mind body and spirit.

***You may really want it but are not totally committed.***

The dictionary says says commitment means:

Commitment:
1 a : an agreement or pledge to do something in the future; especially : an engagement
to assume a financial obligation at a future date b : something pledged c : the state or
an instance of being obligated or emotionally impelled -a commitment to a cause-.

Did you read that: "A commitment to a cause, a pledge, an obligation".
That cause is you!

Let's all totally commit ourselves to our
healthy weight maintenace journey! Let's do it!

Von
