Know the Difference between Cold and Swine Flu Symptoms

Symptom - Cold -Swine Flu

Fever -
1. Fever is rare with a cold.
2. Fever is usually present with the flu in up to 80% of all flu cases.
A temperature of 100°F or higher for 3 to 4 days is associated with the flu.

Coughing -
1. A hacking, productive (mucus- producing) cough is often present with a cold.
2. A non-productive (non-mucus producing) cough is usually present with the flu
(sometimes referred to as dry cough).

Aches-
1. Slight body aches and pains can be part of a cold.
2. Severe aches and pains are common with the flu.

Stuffy Nose-
1. Stuffy nose is commonly present with a cold and typically resolves spontaneously within a week.
2.Stuffy nose is not commonly present with the flu.

Chills -
1. Chills are uncommon with a cold.
2. 60% of people who have the flu experience chills.

Tiredness -
1. Tiredness is fairly mild with a cold.
2. Tiredness is moderate to severe with the flu.

Sneezing -
1. Sneezing is commonly present with a cold.
2. Sneezing is not common with the flu.

Sudden Symptoms -
1. Cold symptoms tend to develop over a few days.
2. The flu has a rapid onset within 3-6 hours. The flu hits hard and includes
sudden symptoms like high fever, aches and pains.

Headache-
1. A headache is fairly uncommon with a cold.
2. A headache is very common with the flu, present in 80% of flu cases.

Sore Throat -
1. Sore throat is commonly present with a cold.
2. Sore throat is not commonly present with the flu.

Chest Discomfort-
1. Chest discomfort is mild to20moderate with a cold.
2. Chest discomfort is often severe with the flu.

The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible not coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).

3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at using a Neti pot, but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton swabs dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C. *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

Good luck and enjoy your walk today Jeri. I am so sorry that you had to go through all that. You are a real fighter with alot of determination! Hope your RA flare subsides soon. When I get a fibro flare I am out of commission too. But just have to do relaxation exercises. With the stress of everyday life--sometimes that's hard to do...lol.--as you well know! Take care today and let us know how your walk goes.
Hugs, Von

Von, my shoulder is great -- finally! After I had surgery, they found an infection that required a picc line for 3 weeks, and then 3 months of oral antibiotics AND antifungals (two different infections). Plus, I had a blood clot, and then I got a staph infection. It was one thing after the other. But now I'm doing well, except for an arthritis flare. RA doesn't seem to like physical stress, so it's keeping me pretty much sidelined until it decides to go away. I'm pretty sure it will subside in the next week or so. I'm going to go for a walk today for the first time in over a week. I haven't been able to run for over a week, so this walk is really important to me today.

Oh Jeri! That sounds painful! My sister has had that done and she said it was awful. Sorry to hear you had to have it done. I hope it feels better soon. How is your shoulder doing? I remember they were going to operate?

My mom use to do those when I was little for ear aches.
Mine are store bought and had a scent to them that aggravated my allergies, so the plain rice would be a better idea.

You can make those little microwave heat things yourself by putting rice in a sock and tying it up. I make them a lot.

I have had a stiff neck for 5 days that seems to be letting up finally. Also a severe headache for days. I know the stiff neck was from working in the yard and the headache is I think from my allergies. I have an allergy shot scheduled for today.
Biofreeze is a life saver!...lol! I have those little bean bag thingys to put in the microwave for my face and neck--Wonderful!

Hope everyone else is doing well!

I don't know if that is what I had (have). I used to get my period for 9 days ever 21 days. I bled heavy and I had a lot of lower back pain. They realized I had cysts on my ovaries but told me they would go away when I went into menopause. I have to say I have been better since then.

Hoping for good news for you, Val. We are all pulling for you! Diane, you said you had cysts on your ovaries that got better after menopause and was just wondering if you have PCOS (polycycstic ovarian syndrome)?

I wish I didn't have to wait either. So many up and down moments.
Yes, I've had fibroids for years and all the other docs just kept saying "wait until after menopause and they'll probably go away." This doc said that I do have a cyst but the cyst has matter in it and that has her concerned. And, although I'm 56, I'm not in menopause yet. Aside from the odd twinge in that area from time to time, I've been so healthy. I've been healthy all of my life except for the usual battle of the bulge. I hike for hours, do Leslie Sansone Walk Away the Pounds almost every day, etc., etc. At least the up side is that being in good shape will help if I do have to have an op, right?

Diane, the doc said that there was "matter" in the ovary after the u/s. So she sent me for a CT scan last week and told me to make an appt with a gyno oncologist. I did so--April 3rd. My bil is a doc and he said that they won't be able to tell for sure whether it is cancer or not until they biopsy it. From what my doc said the last time we spoke--before the CT scan--the oncologist will look at the CT scan and then advise whether a biopsy is needed or not. Slightly different from what bil said but a bit more hopeful of avoiding an op.

I would do the same thing - not worry her until I knew all the facts.

My Mom is notorious for worrying. I haven't told her that I'm getting a stress test done on Wednesday. If it goes well, I'm not sure I'll even let her know. She just frets and worries over everyone and everything. And this is just routine!

Will be praying for good news Val:)

Thanks, Val for the feedback.
My first thought would be to do exactly what you are doing. However, in past experiences with my two grown children, when I withheld information about their dad or my health, they got upset because I didn't let them know what was happening. Now as for me, I did not see the purpose of giving them something to worry about when maybe it was not a serious problem. I guess it just depend upon the children and how they look at things.
I do hope the "C" is not a part of your health issue!

Thanks for your reply Diane. I'm getting great support from friends and from SparkPeople. I can't tell about dh--he doesn't seem to want to talk about it except to say "well, we'll see what happens." Telling dd really wouldn't help because, knowing her, she'd do what I've been doing--reading lots of articles on ovarian cancer--and probably getting as up and down about it as I've been.

Thanks again!

I would do exactly what you are doing. Let her know there are tests but until you find out what needs to be done don't tell her. That is unless you need the support. If you need the support and you are close I am sure she would want to be there for you.

I once had a PT tell me I had sciatica years ago when I was having burning pain in my right thigh. She gave me some gentle stretching exercises for it, told me to take ibuprofen and it eventually went away.

Now I have a question--I have a 29 yo daughter that I usually share everything with. I've told her that I've had "tests" recently for some problems in my ovary but haven't told her that the "c" word was mentioned. I don't want to worry her until I actually see the oncologist and I hear what she has to say. I was just wondering--if you've had a serious illness, how much about it did you share with your adult children?

Hi Diane,
I should look back on my foods next time I get a severe one. I know I can't eat onions, green bell peppers or avocado, they trigger a headache. I was blood tested for allergies and the only food that came up was cocoanut-but I never noticed it bothering me. Maybe it does weeks later and I never realized it! I'll keep all that in mind.

Thanks Diane.

I have friends with fibro so I wouldn't try to give advice. As far as migrains if you keep a headache diary you may be able to pin point what is causing them. Some things will trigger a headache 10 - 14 days after you eat it. Also certain medications will trigger them. Good luck.

I posted that tip for you hoping you would see it. I love chickpeas too and hummus.

Diane I have terrible headaches everyday. Some are migraines, some are from allergy's. I have fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome and other things. But day to day it is hard to tell where they come from, but yes I get migraines too. Those I just lay in bed with a heat wrap. Most people use cold to constrict the blood vessels but I like warm so maybe some of them are cluster headaches. I have so many aches and pains I quit trying to figure out what disease process they come from....lol.
Thanks

Oh, I LOVE garbanzo beans. I eat them on my salads, I sprout them and put them on my Boca Burgers and Turkey Burgers, I snack on the sprouts just plain. Yum!

Glad that they might help lower cholesterol. I have these a few times a week. I doubt I get in 25 ounces, but will start checking.

Old Country Buffet has Garbanzo beans on their salad bar. I always put some on my salad there - while they don't have any Fat Free dressings, it's nice that they have chickpeas!

Share your tips for HEART HEALTH:

The Legume That Lowers Cholesterol

There's a certain bean that may have
cholesterol-lowering powers.
Where can you get it? Try a creamy side of hummus.

Research shows that chickpeas, the luscious legume
that's pureed for hummus dips, could go a long way
toward improving your cholesterol profile.

Gaga for Garbanzos
In a small study, people who ate roughly 25 ounces of chickpeas
(also called garbanzo beans) per week for 12 weeks showed
an improvement in their total cholesterol levels compared with
when they ate a chickpea-free diet for 4 weeks.
And that's not all: Their insulin levels also improved,
and they lost a small amount of weight -- without dieting
or exercising. All good reasons to fall in love with this legume!

Pass the Chickpeas, Please
Researchers think the fiber, protein, and polyunsaturated
fatty acids in chickpeas should probably get the credit for the
cholesterol improvements. Chickpeas are also a great source
of vitamins, minerals, and phytoestrogens.

~Who knew?~

*Eliminate ear mites. All it takes is a few drops of Wesson Corn Oil in your cat's or dog's ear... massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat's skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates healing.

*Kills fleas instantly... Dawn Dishwashing Liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Good-bye fleas.

*Rainy day cure for dog odor: Next time your dog comes in from the rain, simply wipe down the animal with Bounce or any dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.

*Did you know that drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately-without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional pain relievers?

*Did you know that Colgate Toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns?

*Before you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints. They'll clear up your stuffed nose.

*Achy muscles from a bout of the flu? Mix 1 tablespoon horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as a massage oil for instant relief for aching muscles.

*Sore throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.

*Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer. Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer b egins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly-even though the product was never been advertised for this use.

*Honey remedy for skin blemishes... cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight.

*Listerine therapy for toenail fungus: Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine Mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again.

*Easy eyeglass protection... to prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of Maybelline Crystal Clear Nail Polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them.

*Cleaning liquid that doubles as bug killer... if menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you can't find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409. Insects drop to the ground instantly.

*Smart splinter remover: Just pour a drop of Elmer's Glue-All over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.

*Hunt's Tomato Paste boil cure... cover the boil with Hunt's Tomato Paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.

*Balm for broken blisters... to disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops of Listerine, a powerful antiseptic.

*Vinegar to heal bruises... soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process.

*Quaker Oats for fast pain relief... it's not for breakfast any more! Mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in the microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to your hands for soothing relief from arthritis pain.

I have had a severe headache for the last 3 days. Not sure if it is due to allergies or the constant antibiotics I have been on. I am allegic to alot of antibiotics so I quit taking them and went to the nutition store and got cranberry pills and a tea for bladder infections. Hope this helps.

sorry I haven't been around for a while. I wasn't doing too bad but the last month or so I was wiped out. Turns out I had/have acute mono, possible Pneumonia (CT scheduled for Monday) and my bladder is acting up again.

I feel like someone tied a ton of bricks to my back that I'm dragging around.

Please know I do try to keep up, but as far as exercise goes and eating properly its a challenge.

Love ya all.

Yes, I take a multi-vitamin every day -- and log it on the team goals page! (Thanks for the reminders!) Getting sleep is an issue, since a bit part of the problem is jet lag. I'm hoping by next week that I'll be sleeping normally again. I have an appointment today with a dental specialist for "first aid" for my tooth, so that is as under control as I can get it. And drinking an enormous amount yesterday seems to have gotten my other symptoms under control. Exercise is a problem until I get my sleep patterns back to normal, since walking is my exercise of choice, and it's too hot here to walk by the time I've been waking up (8 this morning!) Usually we get up at about 5 and walk before the sun comes up and the heat becomes unbearable. I hope to be able to post tomorrow that I am doing much better! Thanks for your support.

If not now, when?

Hi Sara,
Sorry to hear you're not feeling well. Sounds like you might have run yourself down traveling. Do you take a multi vitamin? You want to be sure and keep your immune system up. Make sure you get enough sleep also. And drink plenty of water. A doctor and dentist can tell you what is going on right now. Try to keep your immune system up so all those germs don't attack all at once again. Keep us posted and let us know how you are doing. Hope you feel better soon!

There don't seem to be many posts here. I hope that means that everyone is healthy, or doing fine with chronic illnesses and other problems.

Here is my whine. I am still jet lagged after almost a week of getting back from North America. I feel groggy and I am sleeping at weird hours. Yesterday I felt fine, today I feel "off" again. I also have a toothache. I went to my dentist yesterday and have been referred to a specialist. I have an appointment for tomorrow, but I'm afraid it is not a simple problem. And finally, I think I have a urinary tract infection. I am susceptible to them. Another pain. I will do a urine culture tomorrow morning and will get the results in a couple of days. Sometimes life can throw you curve balls.

Thanks for being there.

That was fine where you posted it Cathe as everyone who posts there will see it. If members don't post in each thread first, they won't get follow up posts.

Keep us posted on what is going on today. And like I said try to stay calm. Take a deep breathe and let it out slowly from time to time.

I have not had my flu shot. I did have it one year. Both my mom and I ended up sick on New Year's Eve and watched Swan Lake on t.v.
