Minnice, I was in Minnesota for a family reunion in September. It was beautiful then, and the weather was what I consider perfect. Hold that memory. Here I am in California, fretting because it got down to 47 last night. My comfort zone is usually 70 to 80. DH shakes his head, and calls me a hothouse flower.

I'm working hard on those last 5 lbs., hoping to celebrate New Year's Day at goal. It's sooooo close now.

I am jealous of your being in FL where it's nice and WARM!! I think if I went someplace warm in the winter I'd never go back home. Snow is nice for Christmas, but then it can go away! I was thinking about this a few days ago -- why we always think of snow and icicles and evergreen trees at Christmas -- don't think it snows in Bethlehem, and I think they have palm trees there????

Hi Jeri.. emoticon on your new grandson. Praise God all is fine with him and his Mother. What a wonderful Thanksgiving gift.

I'm also happy about your new part-time job. Sounds like things are working our for you at this time of year.

All is well here in Fl although it is raining and has turned cold. Hey, at least it's not snowing, so I'm happy. The house is all decorated and birth trees up. Thor is sleeping under the small white tree in the computer/music room here with me. He won;t be so content at 4:30 when I put him in the carrier and take him to the vet for his bi-weekly blood sugar check. Yes, he's an insulin dependent diabetic. He'll be writing his blog tonight about his adventure and what his numbers are. Be sure and tune in around 8 pm.

That's about it from here for now. Hope everyone is having a good day. I have Christmas CD's playing as I Spark...Even heard Perry Como sing...

I'm sort of looking forward to our first snow. There were a few flurries today and a possible dusting tomorrow....LOVE White Christmas'. Ready for it to go by January, however. Still....a lot worse can happen in life.

Jeri, congrats on the grandbaby and also the new job. I think you are going to definitely be busy! Winter has arrived here in Minnesota, with a dusting of snow overnight. I woke up feeling grouchy about it, but then looked noticed how much more bright and beautiful the green wreaths and red ribbons looked hanging on the garage in contrast to the pure white snow, and that made me feel more festive and positive!

PS, Tenis, let's get our doctors and PTs together and give them a little lecture on communication.

Jeri, best wishes for the new addition to the family. What a joy.

Well, Cindy Lou, you can keep the cold, but I'd like to borrow some of your rain. We've had less than 2 inches in almost a year. I look out and see this huge ocean and not a drop to drink. I'm ready for some wet stuff to fall.

I'm off to the gym to see if I can work up some fat-removal. Weigh-in tomorrow, and it's my first one after Thanksgiving. I suspect there will be lots of weeping and gnashing of teeth at the meeting. Mine included.

Good morning. It's been a while since I checked in here. My daughter had a baby last Wednesday (the day before Thanksgiving), and he was a 34-weeker. He had to stay in the NICU for a week, but he came home last night, so yay!! I've been running back and forth between the hospital and their house, PLUS I got a new part time job as a cashier at Walmart. So I've hardly had a chance to even breathe, let alone get on the internet. I'll do some catching up later. I've got to get to my daughter's house and help her with the kids. She experienced some severe epidural headaches, and her blood pressure shot up to 197/86, so she's not allowed to drive anywhere for a while. I'll be back later to catch up.

She woke up one morning and threw away all her excuses...

Thanks, Cindylou! It was really warm and sunny here in Chicagoland...Like 60 degrees or so! VERY unusual. Might get snow tomorrow night and into Thursday, so of course...it doesn't last!

"Mary".... I had a similar situation where the PT disagreed with the doctor! The doc thinks my sciatica issue stems from a back problem like a herniated disk. The PT thinks its an inflammed joint where the hip connects to the spine. Only an MRI will tell the story (and hopefully...it would). If I am not satisfied with progress in another month or so he'll order the MRI. Time will tell....Surgery should be the last resort of course, when all other options have failed. So best wishes and hopeully, you'll get some permanent relief!

I may have to do the cortisone shots, but I'd really like to get a permanent fix. The funny thing is I can do most of the weight lifting exercises in my Active class and I can lug all kinds of heavy things in the garden, but silly movements like reaching into my purse on the seat beside me or running my hand through my hair may or may not drop me in a paroxysm of pain for about 30 seconds. The orthopedist said it's a frozen shoulder after a very cursory exam and xray. The P.T. says no way it's a frozen shoulder; it's tendinitis of 2 shoulder tendons. If they can't agree, I think I'll need a 3rd opinion, but it's cramping my style and that's not acceptable.

By the way, Molly was the pet name my father had for me. My actual name is Mary, but, as you can imagine, there were way too many "Mary" usernames here.

Have a great Tuesday, everyone.

Mary

Molly... Sounds like quite the adventure! Can't have Thanksgiving without pies! So wonder if you got faster service than if you didn't have the pies. LOL!

That's good to hear about the sciatica and exercise. No problem with exercise for me, but it's the type of exercise! I do sprint triathlons and 5K races (and hoping to further those distances) so it's all anaerobic type stuff for the most part. But I plan to get back into the weight lifting which really helps prevent injuries! So...hoping to get back to this weight lifting class tonight!

Shoulder issues... Got that too! From all my swimming! For me it's called, "swimmer's shoulder". I have some exercises with a band I do that REALLY helps a lot! Previous to swimming, I had weak shoulders and each side has had a shot of cortisone that knocked out the pain and stayed pain free for a long time. I hope you can find ways to avoid surgery...and hope I can too!

This must have been the Thanksgiving of break-downs. While the food preparation went okay, our breakdown happened on the way to the dinner. I had made the dressings and a cousin made the pies at my house. Then we loaded it all up in DH's beloved 1940 sedan as a special treat. The car died on the long downhill into town. We limped into a parking lot and had to call another relative to come pick us and the food up.

Sorry about your sciatica, Tenis. I've had enough bouts of that over the years to feel your pain. Funny, though, since I started working out consistently at the gym, the sciatica seems to be gone. Instead, my shoulder is coming unglued so there may be surgery in my future, too.

Saw my ortho today for follow up and he said to make sure I continue the exercises at home. I'm 80% better than what I was and although this is great news, Sciatica can easily come back. If it's due to a bulging disc or herniated disc....surgery may be in order. An MRI can tell. So...since I'm so much better, for now...ab work at home...if it gets bad again...MRI time. Ain't aging fun??? Ha!

Tenis, at my age I've given up EVER having good abs, but at least the core work has pretty much solved my lower back problems. They say engaging the core is just plan all around good for you, so I try to do a little of it a couple times a week, although I tend to neglect it sometimes!

So sorry to hear you couldn't affort a Thanksgiving. I hope 2010 is a good year for you.

We had a small Thanksgiving this year...just DH, our two adult sons and in-laws.

Thanksgiving night our microwave broke. Then the next day, our oven broke! Both were 13 years old. New ones will be delivered/installed next weekend. So,in the interim, we are using an old Nesco (electric portable oven). I'm talkin' WAY old. 61 years old! It was a wedding gift of my MIL's. She'll get a kick out of this when I tell her! She gave it to us when they moved into a senior center. Using a 61 year old oven b/c my 13 year old oven died!

Tomorrow, is weigh in day for WW's at work program. I sure hope I can do it this time!!!!

Have a wonderful week, ladies! emoticon

emoticon Good Afternoon All!!!!!! Have had my three youngest grandchildren for the last six days and wow, what a refresher course!!!!!! And not a dull moment either!!! LOL

Well Thanksgiving, now that's another subject. We didn't have one at out house this year. Couldn't afford to. but that's ok as there's always next year. Everyone I've talked to had a nice day and that's good.

Mary I'll try to keep you company but no promises with the grandkids. Yes, Christmas and New Years are just around the corner. It's good you are preparing; we all need to be doing that.

Here's wishing everyone a wonderful afternoon and evening.

Hmm, it looks like this chat room has been a little empty lately so I'll jump in and see what shakes out.

How did everyone's Thanksgiving go? I worked pretty hard to keep my eating in check because I still have vivid memories of a long night of groaning stomach pain last Thanksgiving after ingesting way more than I should have. I promised myself that endless night I would never, ever, ever eat to that stuffed feeling again. So far, I've kept my word. Before yesterday's Thanksgiving dinner, I always thought I could never stop eating the two traditional family dressings as long as there was still some left in the serving bowls. I discovered, happily, that my world does not come to an end if I only eat one small serving of each. Whew. That was an epiphany for me.

Anyway, I'm now preparing myself for the next holiday onslaught which is around the corner. I wish us all good eating and not so much of it.

Mary

Crunches seem to be outdated these days. They've got me doing planks, bridges on a ball and then lifting one leg at a time, alternating, side planks, Squats on a ball, A different kind of leg lift on a ball (can't even describe it), the clam, walking sideways with a stretcchie....all after being on the ellitpical... I sweat bullets by the time I leave! Boy oh boy...I should have great abs after these workouts! LOL!

Did everyone get that warm, sunny weather over the weekend? Beautious! Probably the last 70s and sunny weekend until next spring...boo hoooooo

Have a marvelous Monday!

If anyone has been contemplating getting the SP balance board, I would recommend trying it. For only $13, it is an easy way to strengthen your core without taking alot of time. Is MUCH more fun than doing crunches!!!!

Good morning all!

Just saw the Digest for this team and I have to say... What an active group we are! I had an especially active week with over 600 minutes of activity. I thought for once I'd be in the top 5 on this group which is always incredible in activity points. Best I could do was Number SIX. All my other teams, I was in the top 5. LOL Of course...not many of us can beat Pam!

Have a blessed Sunday.... Off to church and then visiting my sons'in their new apartment in Chicago! 70ish and sunny yesterday and today! Love it!

Wow Lynn! Great article! I didn't know the only thing cancer cells eat is sugar. That sure is a good motivator to stay away from it!!

Here's a good article on GREAT reasons to avoid sugar and sugary foods, if you are like me and love these useless carbs. Both my parents were big sweets fans and both died in their 60s of aggressive cancers. My dad at 61 died of pancreatic cancer and my mom at 67 of ovarian cancer (she spent most of her adult life very obese). Both cancers are silent killers as they show few if any symptoms until the final stage. This artical tells you how cancer cells love to eat sugar! UGH! I should hang this on my computer at work so I don't visit the office candy dish anymore!!! www.everydayhealth.com/blog/grossman

I think this is a great idea!
(Thanks for posting this here)
I have thought of this for a long time as Oprah can reach so many people. I remember about a year ago though someone writing her but got no response. On her site there is a spot where people can post to be on her show. Everyone can post there. Maybe if she gets enough posts, she will reconsider. I know Spark People is getting the word about about health, fitness and weight loss, it's a shame though that everyone doesn't know about this wonderful free site. There are so many people, Oprah included that are suffering from being over weight and don't know what to do.
Great post! Thanks!

There is a link on Oprah.com where anyone can write in and suggest a show topic. Here's the link:
https://www.oprah.com/ord/plugform.jsp?p
lugId=216

I just wrote to Oprah at that link and suggested making SparkPeople and Chris Downie a show topic.

Here's what I wrote (simple and to the point):

Please consider having a show about SparkPeople.com and it's founder Chis Downie. His vision has created a website that has encouraged 1,000's of people around the world to lose weight and live healthier lives. He has just written a new book, that won't be released until after Christmas, but is already on Amazon's best seller list. The book is called: The Spark: The 28-Day Breakthrough Plan for Losing Weight, Getting Fit, and Transforming Your Life.
Thank you,
[my name]

It's easy to write to her. Let's do it and get Chris on the show!!

Kay from Tennessee

DFolkard, I have never had pomegranate but see they are on sale this week and was thinking it's time to try them, although not sure I will know what to do with it when I get it home! Von, you make me want to get another poodle! I miss mine. My neighbor at the lake has a little black one that is just adorable - I wanted to pupnap her! I have a 5-day streak going on avoiding binging, and I think if I can keep it going through Saturday I will treat myself to a single candybar or maybe a small Dairy Queen treat on Sunday. Haven't decided. The Halloween candy is always a challenge -- I buy too much, not wanting to run short, and then get very few kids coming to the door (they are smart - they go to the RICH side of town where they get better stuff! ha-ha).

Same here LynnTW, not buying any candy till last minute or I'll eat it...lol! I love this time of year to make pumpkin thinks, like pumpkin fluff etc.

Today we got another dog. Not sure if I am just going to foster or keep her. My Step daughter couldn't keep her and so we got her. She is a 7 mo old miniature black poodle with hot pink hair on the top of her head...lol. My SD dyed it and asked me if I wanted the dye to do it again when it washes out...I can't imagine that!..She is so cute but I already have 3 dogs. She is so little though. My DH keeps saying it will just be like having 3 dogs and a cat because she is so little.

I ate well today and more than normal exercise with the dogs at the park. It was really windy here today.

Have a good night everyone.

Yup gross candy is the way to go. Stuff you wouldnt want to eat.

I clean sweeped the food recepticles today. Measured out some snacks etc that should take me through the weekend including work.

And the tracking of food, which I hate to do, has restarted. Probably do it for at least a month to get that binge monster under control.

And oh happy day for me. Pomegranates are back at the grocer. This is "THE" thing that helped me way back when I strated spark. 2 oz of those little seeds is a perfect sweet treat for me. Plus it takes so long to peel the little devils, that I treasure them and make them last.

Picked up ingrediants for a healthier version of a chicken pot pie that I found on Spark. Tweaked the soups to Campbells healtier lo fat & sodium and changed the topping to Pillsbury reduced fat crescents. Big hit at the table.

I'm doing pretty good so far this week as well. Day two of staying on plan. Tonight, I'll be at a house warming where someone is bringing pumpkin bars. I LOVE pumpkin desserts. She E mailed this so I replied to all how nice I thought she was to bake and bring something (freeing up the hostess who works long hours). But I also explained I've been gaining weight lately and will discipline myself to having only a half of a bar. This way, people will watch if I really stick to my plan!

Tomorrow, someone is bringing in a homemade cake for a co worker who is having her last chemo therapy treatment. The woman can bake a cake like you wouldn't believe! They are so good, she has a side business for it (she has her professional baker's license). So...I have that evil thing to kick down too! If I can hold out until lunch, it'll be gone by then! I'm afraid to even have a little of it because it's so good, I'll want more. Better to have nothing than to cave into the constant desire for more! Major red light food!

I've started a journal with some before pictures and writing all my food and exercises in it. Hopefully, this will help keep me on track. :D

Hang in their all...Do NOT give in to the Pumpkin' Treat Monster! I'm not buying any candy until the last minute and then, gross candy at that! (is there such a thing?)

Yes, our poor hubbies should know by now that they can't win! Mine knows that if he brings anything "good" into the house, he hides it - but if I have "one of those days" and "need" it, he is happy to share. A while back I added a new goal to my tracker of eating only a planned snack at night that fits in my nutritional plan for the day. Tracking it and seeing the results does seem to help. But let's face it, there are those times we just don't care, we are gong to eat everything and anything in our path until we have made ourself sick. Why we do that, who knows?? Blame it on hormones, I think. But I have had a pretty good week and feeling very good today.

Yes..that creep does get around (binge monster)! emoticon emoticon

I tamed him today as I've had a great day food and exercise wise...Gotta take it ONE day at a time!
emoticon emoticon

VON... I treat Ellie like the little girl I never had. Today, I had to get a new "gentle leader" (a head collar for dogs who really pull! She's terrible!). While there, I saw these cute Halloween collars that were orange and black and had a skeleton medallion that glows in the dark. On the collar, it says, "Bad to the bone!" LOL It was so her. So she's wearing it now. DH just rolls his eyes!

Speaking of DHs...It DOES sound like more than a few of us have these "nice" guys feeding us chocolate. I'm sure they mean well. My poor DH... If he goes to the store, I WANT to tell him to get me candy, but know I shouldn't so I don't. I expect him to read my mind anyway. So if he comes home without it, I'll say, "I was hoping you bought some candy." If he DOES bring it home, I say, "You know I'm trying to watch what I eat! Why are you buying his junk!" LOL The poor man can't win!

emoticon emoticon emoticon

There's our aging parents' issues and then our adult children's issues! We truly are....the sandwich generation! No wonder we struggle with food! Too often I use it as a reward for dealing with a stressful day. How goofy is that?

emoticon

Well, hopefully, I can build on today tomorrow and keep it going!

Hope you all are having a good start to your week so far.

Gawd, that awful binge monster gets around better than the tooth fairy. I think he attacks me 2-3 times a week. If I'm lucky I binge on healthy things, but chocolate is my downfall. My hubby is kind enough to keep his dark chocolate peanut M&Ms hidden from me -- but when I am in feeding frenzy mode I can sniff them right out!! Night time is always a struggle for me -- I can sit there before bed time and eat twice as many calories as I've eaten the entire day!

Hi Lynn!
Yes, Getting elderly can be sad. I noticed when I worked that if a patient had dementia then the other parts of them were healthy and if their mind was sharp then they had all kinds of illnesses. My Mom is doing pretty good mentally, I just need to watch as she is quite forgetful. My daughter and nieces keep trying to help my Mom with cleaning or bill paying, but she refuses. She doesn't want any outside help either. At one point she refused to get in a wheel chair for me to take her to the drs. I had to really insist. When a parent or grandparent goes down hill it is hard for the child to become their care giver--they being use to being in the child role. But luckily with my job I had to talk to patients families about role reversal-even when their loved one was being nasty about giving up control.

Glad Ellie is doing well. They are so funny aren't they--they need to be in a pack and you're their her pack leader. I enjoy my 3 so much.

Lol!! I just gained about 7 with that old binge monster. So I am watching out for him--trying to be prepared...lol!

Deb is talking about her DH too with bringing goodies into the house same as yours and mine. My Dh knows I love chocolate, so he brings home Hershey bars with almonds all the time and of course I eat them...lol...I guess they mean well.

Deb, I am in awe of our runners on this team. I am lucky to get up a fast run...lol. I am proud of all of them though and sit back and root them on :0)

I got a headache am am going to go rest a while. Have a good evening all!

I think I should hop into this post and get to know you all.

I envy you runners! Both of my knees have had ACL repairs. They are sooo much stronger since I lost the weight, but not runner quality.

And the binge monster is a great name for that creep. Mine came around during the end of the summer and graced me with about 8 extra pounds that have crazy glued themselves to me. Think it's time to move husband's junk food supply out of sight and clean sweep the cabinets and fridge again.

Wow, Von... I can relate to some of what you are going through. My in-laws are well into their 80s and suffering from some health issues. My FIL has bad dementia, but they haven't diagnosed him with Alzheimer's, but we wonder some times. MIL has macular degeneration but her mind is as sharp as ever. So she is my FIL's mind and he's her eyes. Either one of them goes and the other is going to have to have care. MIL is so against that it's driving us crazy. Doesn't want ANY outside help and she needs it BAD! Back is out of whack and she's hunching over, but refuses cleaning help and assistance for my FIL who is HEAVY. Arguments, etc....Getting to the point where we are going to have to force this thing! So we often go out there to help when we can with shopping, etc.....

Ellie (my beagle pup) is doing fine. Got a wooden fence this summer so now she can play out back alone...but she wants us out on the deck when she's out! What a queen bee! LOL

I DO remember that mean old Binge Monster! He attacked me about a month ago and I went down! Gained 5 Lbs and am still nursing that wound. So I'm with you...I gotta dump this surplus! DH isn't a help buying chips and baked goods all the time. Tried talking to him to stop, but he doesn't! He doesn't need it either! So I've got to face these demons head on and use my "kicking image" more often!

emoticon

Get strong!

emoticon

and rid those demons once and for all!
emoticon emoticon

And live happily ever after!
emoticon emoticon emoticon

So let's do it, all!

Tenis, I just ran our local 5K and that's probably what I will do next year, IF I decide to do it. Not at all sure about it yet. I agree this is a very motivating team. I've maintained for over a year now and part of that success is due to all you ladies!

Hi Lynn TW!! How are you? I was wondering if you were still here. I posted a emoticon
and thought of you and the binge monster...lol!!

Sorry to hear you have to take it easy. It's best we listen to our bodies though. You always do great and push yourself to the max-just hang in there. Good luck with the turkey trot.

I have had so much going on with my Mom and her health. Out of the blue she was in terrific pain and unable to walk. (She has spinal stenosis and had one operation before for it.) So I was driving her everywhere--drs. tests and running errands for her. Finally she was able to use a walker and she just finished up some PT. She's doing much better and is able to actually drive now.
I have the 2 corgi's and My Kota, the Australian Shepard--he has so many allergies and I am constantly going to the drs. with him and everyday trying to do things to make him comfortable.
My sister has alot of problems and I have to run down there from time to time. Geesh, never ending. I have gained about 7 pounds due to not planning ahead so I really needed to come back and get on track myself. Being on this team keeps me so motivated. So it's good to be back.
How is your pup doing?
Glad to see you here and always nice chatting with you. Please keep in touch!
Big Hugs, Von

Hey gals! Nice to see this team come alive again. Von...I was wondering what happened to you an am glad you are back. Where've ya been hidin'? How are your pups (you have two, right?).

Jer...Nice to see you are still "runnin' around", no matter the distance...

You too, MNNICE.... You young duckling! Good for you for having a plan for the winter months. What 5k are you looking at? I haven't raced since my last triathlon in August (had some injuries and slowed way down for recovery...now slowly building back up). I'm planing on running the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving, a 5K. Then I might take a break from running until after the holidays and do walking and step aerobics. I hate to lose what I've built up to, but I think my muscles just need to recover. Back to the weights as well!!!! They helped me stay injury free when I was into to it the year before last.

Again...Nice to see some activity back on here!

It's good to have both of you back - you are so motivating with all your successes, even with the setbacks you've faced! Jeri, 8K is still something to be very proud of! I am toying with the idea of maybe doing the 5K again next year and working on speed over the winter months on the treadmill. It would feel good to kick some 30-yr-old butt next year! HAHAHA! On the other hand, I seem to enjoy my running in shorter distances, so might just stick to wogging in order to avoid burning out completely.

That sounds great Jeri that you will still be there and having fun with your friends. Good luck on the 8K. Make sure you share your pictures and stories when you get back. Wow! November is almost here already! I have never been to the OBX in November. Bet it's still nice though.

Von, I have to back out of the Half Marathon because of a huge arthritis flare that has seriously interrupted my training. BUT... I am still going to be there with my friends while they run, AND I am going to run the 8K the day before the Half. So I still get to run, just not as far, and I still get to have fun with my friends.

Hi Jeri!
Thanks, I missed you too and all your antics...lol! The how are you doing today thread is still here. Probably when you looked I was moving everything around and had to bump it to the top. Nancy and Lynn have been doing a great job keeping everything going. I was thinking about you and wondering if you were still going to the Outer Banks in November for the Marathon? They have it advertised every where down there.

Thanks gals... Since I last posted, I went to the beach pool here to practice the swim portion where the REAL event will take place. Law of laws, that water is COLD! Only in the mid 60s! I may break down and rent a wetsuit! I've never used one before and usually, it's not recommended to do something you haven't trained much in. I can't decide! It's less than a 15 min. swim (or one would hope!), but 15 min. can be a long time if you're miserable. Hmmmmmmmm

Hope you all are having better weather than me! Cool and cloudy almost the whole week! So far, Sunday, race day, is 80 and sunny. But that water hasn't had time to warm up this week at all. It'll still be COLD!

Hi Lynn!! Good luck on your triathlon on Sunday!

Hi Jeri, I hope your shoulder mends quickly after your surgery. That OBX race should be fun. I checked it out. But we usually go down in September. November is kinda cold, but great for a race!

That's right...I remember you saying you had a lot of problems with your shoulder. I'll be out of town by then, so ahead of time, many of God's blessings for successful surgery and quick recovery! I hope you can put this issue behind you once and for all!
