BittyGirl, I have read too, that limiting especially sugar & white bread, white rice etc can make a big difference in belly fat. I have been doing strength training for almost 3 years--usually 2-3 times weekly and am firmer but it hasn't gotten rid of that belly. This is worth it. I hate the spare tire going on.

Also, menopause has totally changed the way my body looks. I never carried any weight above the belly button before. It was usually in the bum, thighs, arms and everywhere else, but now I'm starting to look like an apple. I'm hoping if I can get this 45 pounds off, it will come off my belly as well and hoping I don't look like a thin apple, haha!

I'm so impressed with the weight loss of you guys! I just started and going through the initial rough period, but I did lose 2 pounds this last week, so that is good. I can't believe how hard it is to lose weight at my age!

I have the same problem with a big tummy with loose skin. I lost
weight and reached my goal, when I had BC and surgery, last Nov.
Honestly, for some reason, I seem to have gained, only in my tummy.
I have not gained any pounds. I remain the same weight loss.
I am not taking any medication, no radiation, nor chemo. I do take
diuretic pills. I think I need to lose lots of inches, not pounds.

Someone advised me, to take walnut oil, to reduce tummy fat. They
saw it on Dr. Oz Show. Has anyone heard about this?

Well...I think I've answered yours and my own question....SUGAR does seem to be the culprit. Many of us don't want to hear that, but I conducted an experiment over the last 10 days and have fasted all REFINED sugar from my eating (with exception of a sm. ice cream cone) I had yesterday.

My swollen belly is going down and I have lost 4.4 lbs I have read alot on SUGAR and how little it benefits us, so for what it's worth - I think of it as a "wolf in sheep's clothing". LOL

I'm gonna keep working on it. My little sweet treats "may be permissable, but are they REALLY beneficial?" Lysa Terkeurst

I'm back with Sparkpeople to try again! I started it several months ago and somehow lost my motivation to keep going! I so want to get rid of the middle aged spread and belly weight, but it's so hard. Hopefully I will do better this time around!

This is an interesting topic and one I am still intrigued with. I have always had a "thick middle" for as long as I can remember. Even when I was 14 and not overweight I still looked like I was 3 months pregnant. I have lost a significant amount of weight/inches around my waistline, but I'm still not happy.

Has anyone heard that cutting way back on sugar can make a difference also in belly fat? Doesn't sugar convert to fat? No amount of working out seems to address this problem.
Any ideas?

I have lose skin on my thighs, on my butt, arms and tummy. If I could just fly like a squirrel, the arm skin might not bother me so much.

Even all those years with a 24(!) in. waist, I still had the loose skin from my pregnancy & a big butt, but now I have a menopausal middle. My waist just keeps getting bigger but is not in the "danger zone YET. I have a sleep disorder which also contributes, but isn't it frustrating to exercise and not see much change where ya really want it? Of course if I upped my cardio and crunches, that would help.

I too have the loose skin and floppy middle, but when I think of the rolls of fat and the barrel shape I had 2 years ago, I think its silly to worry about the spare tires. I do have a waist and a feminine shape. I have lost ALL the markers of metabolic syndrome which is highlighted by a large middle. I am healthy, I am strong, I am a SPARKER.

I agree with Joy and anyone else who said that an overall healthy eating and consistent exercising plan, with some cardio, core, and strength--without necessarily flogging yourself like The Bigges Loser--helps. I still have annoying softness in the belly, but to be honest, we can't all have abs like Jillian Michaels. I've put on a few pounds this winter, but I know that, when I lose them again, my belly will tighten up.

Joy, I have to say that "standing tall" definitely makes my middle feel thinner, if not physically, definitely psychologically!

I haven't noticed a difference, except for the lose skin. It has tightened some over the years since I lost the weight, but I'll never look like I'm 20 again! lol No bikini for this lady, but it really doesn't bother me and hubby says he's fine with it too.

Even when I was overweight, I didn't carry my excess weight in my stomach, though. I carried a lot of it in my chest area and that seems to have shrunk down to nothing. I know a lot of it was weight, but wondering if it's also from being menopausal?

I have thought a lot about this since posting yesterday. Observations that have come with age: standing tall makes a significant difference on your middle--- and the smile on your face far exceeds the size of your waistline as far as the impression you make on others. Too often we hold ourselves under too powerful of a microscope.

My whole life it seems I have carried my weight in my belly and middle back, so I'm used to it and haven't really noticed an increase. Of course, I'm not officially in menopause yet because I haven't gone the full year. Hoping I don't get any thicker in that area! I know some of it has to be loose skin, also. I just keep working on the cardio and core. Seems it's a common problem for our age.

I have to agree with CAT. But, I admit that postmenopausal belly fat and or loose skin were a real concern for me as I lost weight. I've blogged that Journey and don't want to flog it. Menopause was covered in Part V, March 27, 2010. The Journey blogs start on March 20 with the before pictures appearing mostly in parts III and IV. I've been happily surprised that my core has tightened up as much as it has; took time. But I continue to see progress. I do exercise, walk, do yoga and other core exercises. But, I like the way I look today and I haven't had any surgery to do it. Abs picture is in the March 27, 2010 blog. If you lose the fat and exercise you can look good. Not necessarily like a teenager, but good.

I posed this question to the message boards a year ago and was told by the Spark Nutritionist that the only way to lose belly fat is to lose fat.

Yes, the elastic can be gone from weight loss as Joy says, but that is different from belly fat.

You can not target exercise to rid yourself of this. You must lose fat by diet and a full body exercise program.

Good luck.

I, too, am so frustrated with the softness and pudginess of my tummy and whole sparetire area; with abdomen the worse!! I do strength training and core exercises and am consistent with my cardio--usually 6-7 days a week but I guess it is just a part of mature, child bearing women. I will watch other replies, too!! Seriously, mine showed up overnight or so it seems. Until 3 yr. ago, my waist was 24-25 in. Then after I had breast cancer and even tho I am not on meds for it, my waist is now 27. cannot lose any in. there and there is this softness above my waist that's gross.
I wish I could help you with ways to lose it but I am at a loss, too.

My belly fat is the thing that annoys me the most. I am thin, I am in good shape, I am muscular. I do a lot of cardio, and a lot of strength training. I do not ignore my core. But I really dislike my belly. I'm sure what I've got now is not belly fat. It's just where my skin stretched and won't snap back into place. I wish I could afford a tummy tuck, because I'd have one in a heartbeat.

Hi All! I'm new to Sparkpeople and love it. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to target the belly fat that occurs during menopause? I can lose weight, but the belly fat just won't budge it seems. Thanks all!!!
