The thing about maintenance is that we can enjoy indulgences now and then as long as we can control it, and that's where I sometimes have troubles. Sure, I could avoid chocolate altogether, but then I would never learn how to kluse moderation. That is the hardest lesson for me to learn, but I do want to learn how to enjoy small portions of the "sinful" stuff without wanting more -- unfortunately, practicing that lesson sometimes does lead to binging, but sometimes it doesn't and I consider that progress!

Same with me on Wed. night MNNICE. DH brought home Paletta and fried chicken from a meeting he was at. I ate it and really felt groggy and sluggish the next morning. Back to healthy eating! And feel much better. Just proves the point that clean, basic foods are best for you.
BTW, I would never have ate these foods before--I need to kick myself in the butt and really do mindful eating with every bite!

Yes, did it again last night, getting into cookies and chocolates before bedtime. Today I am feeling the effects and am tired and groggy. The good thing is that I crave healthy foods after a splurge like that and eating very well today.

Once again, the importance of getting right back on track and not letting guilt get the best of you has proven effective. I concentrated on eating healthy and staying on my meal plan yesterday (low range of calories), and my weight was right back down.Hopefully my sweets cravings will stay away for a while now!!

I know what you mean MNNICE. Sometimes I could just die for something sweet! I tell myself it's hormones and try eating fruit or yogurt. It is hard once those cravings hit. Hang in there!

I can't even blame it on a vacation, but I have had some battles with sweets lately and give in about every other day, so my weight is up, down, up, down. Tonight I had one of the scrumptious DQ Midnight Truffle blizzards again. They are deadly on calories! Tomorrow I need to get in some good cardio and just keep busy all day. I know if I keep this up the pounds are going to stop coming back off!! I have worked too hard to NOT keep this weight off. So far I am okay, still in my range, but getting into some dangerous habits lately!

LOL Thanks Nancy. It was 5 pounds I had gained. I have lost 2 of them. I love Mexican food! That would be a hard tempatation!

Von, if I gain only 3 lbs on vacation, I consider it a victory!

I'm going to Texas at the end of the month. Hopefully, I'll not do too much damage. Lots of GOOD Mexican Restaurants there:)

I absolutely ate too many sweets yesterday. I am trying to correct that today. It seems at times that I just crave these sweets and sometimes I give in to it! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Add yogurt or drink milk with it. Dairy neutralizes capsaicin, the chemical that makes hot stuff hot.

I think it sounds like you improved it.

Thanks - I did much better yesterday.

I did mess up on something though. Dh and I went to the store to get some food for the potluck, I came home and realized at 9:30 last night, I took the wrong list, so couldn't make my dish I was going to make.

We're just going to pick up some turkey brats and buns and a ready made salad. That way I'll know the points.

Dust yourself over and start again right now. You can start your day over at any part of the day. Just brush your teeth and you'll feel fresh and new and ready to start again.

Thanks, Von. I didn't go near them today although I still have a few of them left.

I messed up today because with my business, I have not logged in my food intake for today. I could go back and try to remember everything but then I will probably miss something or at least the portion size. Oh, well as you said, "dust myself off and get off to a good start tomorrow."

Val, they are Weight watcher points. You get so many a day on weight watchers and you need to stay within that amount of points.

With weight watchers you can be on the flex plan or the core plan.

Sugar and menopause was my experience. I was never a sweets person, one cookie once in awhile was fine. But oh the salt! Oyster crackers or pretzels. Then came menopause and the crippling headaches, and I craved sugar. I convinced myself that sugar eased the headaches, though I really doubt it. I gained 10 pounds after keeping my weight at goal for nearly 30 years.

I started drinking gallons of caffeine free diet coke, which helped. Only time got rid of the intense cravings, but I was able to lose the weight by getting back to basics, even though the basics had changed in those 30 years.

I still drink caffeine free diet coke rather than water, I am still at goal and don't have the attitude of deprivation. I know that most of the people on weight loss programs insist on 8 glasses of plain water every day, nothing with caffeine, but I'll take my long term goal weight and diet soda with no apologies.

emoticon Team,

You all are doing great! Just confess and get back on track as you're doing! Drinks lots of water.
Someone told me on here as a matter of fact, that my sugar cravings were due to going through menopause. I was never a sweets person. I favored Salty tortilla chips with salsa etc. Then boom.....sweet attacks. I was trying to figure it out, maybe due to my diet change I thought. Then someone said it is due to menopause and hormones!
So what do we do about that? I'll have to do some more reading....lol.

Keep Kickin' emoticon the binge monster!!

Went to our favorite burger joint for lunch. Ordered the burger without the bun and salad instead of fries. Sounds fine so far, doesn't it? Ummm, well the burger was 6 ozs and dh shared his fries. And I also had a small lemon blueberry scone later this afternoon.

Confession over. Penance was extra exercise today and tomorrow.

Ya'll just had to talk about cookies, didn't ya? Now I am craving for some home made chocolate chippers!

emoticon emoticon emoticon

Tri training in full gear and I'm pooped! Took swimming off this AM as I was so tired! Didn't want to overdo it. The weather is so beautiful today that I got in a good ride on my bike.

Back to reality next week as the temps drop into the 30s! UGH!

Cookies seem to be my weak point. You know that it is Girl Scout Cookies sale time. I had no intention of buying any but a friend of mines who has a grand daughter who is a girl scout, so graciously bought a box for me and of course in a weaken state, I opened the box and the rest is history. At least I won't have to think about that again for a year. emoticon

Von,

I had a bad day on Friday too. I decided to have a small piece of chocolate and ended up eating a couple more, another, and so on. Then some angel food cake.

I'm surprised - I've not had a "sugar addiction" like this before, even when I was overweight, but I sure do now. So I'm staying away from it, unless it's very controlled.

Yes...kick'm good!!! Here's my shot! I had lost four pounds, gained one....held steady....weighed in this AM and still steady...weighed in this afternoon (I know, I know...quit being obsessed with the scale already! Normally not...just have a weigh in tomorrow and was hoping....) and was 3 lbs up!!!!!!!! HOW CAN THAT HAPPEN?! And then....this is WHY you DON'T do this....I ATE SOME SPICE DROPS JUST BECAUSE I WAS MAD!

Well....that is the end of that! Pick ourselves up and get right back on the band wagon (who comes up with these sayings???)!!!!

So, thanks for the kick in the pants, Von!

I'll be making my menu and healthy shopping list for tomorrow. We had torrential rains day before yesterday and there's still a flooded road between us and our grocery store. Should be down by tomorrow. Other places to shop, but who knows where stuff is then! Ha!

Have a BINGE FREE Sunday! :D

I really-really messed up yesterday!!!

I went to my daughter's to get my grandkids off to school and pick them up as my Son in law was getting his foot operated on.
My grandson only goes half day and we went to burger King. I also had to get a happy meal so his sisiter could get a 'prize' also. So I had chicken nuggets and french fries and diet coke. I know I could have chosen a healthier happy meal.
Then when my daughter came home she gave me the girl scout cookies that were in. I took all four boxes home and DH and I sampled every box!

I was so delirious tired yesterday from lack of sleep-having to get up at 3:30am, that I just went off track really well...lol. That is why sleep is so important so you mind can function and tell you 'no'!...lol. No excuses....I messed up big-time and am back on track today and drinking lots and lots of water. emoticon

emoticon No wonder my end of month weigh in is 139.8! Geesh!

Kick the binge monster...huh Lynn?...lol! emoticon

Have a great day everyone and stay on track!!

The treats really are like a drug. At one point, I was eating heavily frosted birthday cake even though the frosting with gross! Still ate it!!! Just like a junkie!

Anyway, I weighed myself again and already lost 3 lbs of water. I figured as I have spent more time in the bathroom than I care to know! So for now, the weight gain is at 6 and not 9. I'll take it!

LINDA...Good for you on dumping the stuff too! Proud of ya!

I almost had the "shakes" this morning throwing that plate of cookies and chocolates in the garbage -- like a junkie flushing her "fix"!! But I did it. It is so easy to have a little cookie here, a little piece of fudge there, a tiny piece of pie - and by the end of the day it's 1,000 calories or more. My scale was up 5 pounds the day after Christmas but didn't go over the high end of my goal range -- and two of those pounds are back off, so I'm good. But I have slacked off on the exercise and need to get back in the routine. It's so hard to get motivated, especially with the winter "blahs" coming up now that the holidays are almost over......... It does help to come in here and see that we are not alone and we all stumble, but with each other's help we get back up again!

Good for you Linda. You can do it!

Our family celebrates on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. There's tons of cookies, fudge, etc. in the house right now. I'm doing ok, but could do better. It's hard not to take a lot of tastes of things.

I plan on allowing for plenty of treats New Year's Eve and then getting on track for New Year's Day. I decided it would be best to pick one day instead of two and then letting it get out of control.

I will not even think of stepping on the scale until Sunday.

12 pounds??!! I thought it would be 5 pounds.

And my question is: if Americans are getting so much bigger, why do they keep making aisles in stores narrower?

Nell... Sure does feel great getting rid of it... I do have a few things still left that DH wants. Of course, I've indulged in that stuff already today since "it's there!" But I at least had an actual breakfast, a real lunch, and am having roast and veggies for dinner. I've had days this holiday season where my meals were cookies, candy and cake! Good Grief!

BTW!!!!! I know EXACTLY what episode you are talking about with Rhoda!!! I REMEMBER that episode! I laughed until I cried because what she said was SO true! That is so funny you mention that episode. I saw it years ago and didn't think anyone else had remembered that! She was a hoot!

Linda... Well, as you can see, you are not alone in this struggle! Let's hope the thrill of a new year and starting fresh will kick in and take control. Keep your hopes high and be determined.

Nancy... two pounds is sure better than my 9 lbs. Mercy me! I went to Caribou Coffee shop and their trivia question of the day (you get 10 cents off your coffee if you answer correctly) was, "What is the average weight gained by Americans over the holiday season?" A) 2 lbs B) 5 lbs C) 7 lbs or D) 12 Lbs. I said C, 7 lbs as I was sure I read that somewhere. She said no, it was D - 12 lbs! No way! That's a lot of weight and I really find that hard to believe. I guess it depends which study you listen to! LOL You are right...no way is it one lb either! In our dreams!!!

Don't blame you with the DIL cookies. That's a hard one. Share with neighbors, coworkers maybe?

Here's to a Slim Healthy 2009!

I forced myself on the scale this AM & was up close to 2 pounds in 1 week. I heard a couple news stories recently that the average person gains just ONE lb. over the holidays. Those people obviously don't have the abundance of cookies & other goodies around. One pound is nothing... I could gain that in a single day!
I will be throwing out cookies also - both my adult daughter & future daughter-in-law baked & brought cookies when they visited. I feel bad throwing out their cookies! (this is an excuse, I know!!) emoticon

Tenis: Doesn't it feel good to throw out food? I remember a line on the old Mary Tyler Moore show when Rhoda said that she didn't know why she was bothering to eat the candy, she should just apply it directly to her hips. I figure that the food is just as thrown out in the garbage (or down the disposal-my favorite) as it is to eat it.

The first arm movement is hard but after that it is freeing. Don't you feel great?!

Yes...I messed up big time over the holidays too. And I said this year would be different! Well, it wasn't. It was like every other year. Binge on Christmas goodies! I didn't even maintain. I faced the music and forced myself to weigh in today and adjusted my ticker/tracker whatever you call it. I gained NINE pounds! I do believe a lot of it probably water. It was mostly carbs I binged on and that has a way of holding a lot of water. So...the good news is, it should come back NOW that I will be eating better!!!! I don't even plan on "waiting until Jan. 1". This afternoon, I cleaned my refrigerator out and threw junk out. I had peppermint oreo type cookies left that I love and tossed those out in sloppy garbage so there's no chance of me digging them out later to eat! Whatever it takes!!!!

Here's to making 2009 a GREAT HEALTHY SLIM YEAR!

Yes, I messed up,too! The sweets were just calling me and I was not strong enough at the moment to resist. I did do some exercise but I don't feel that made up for the sweets. I am ready to get back on the bandwagon. I am thankful that there are no more holidays that call for eating for a while. emoticon emoticon

Lynn - Holiday traditions are so important to many of us that it is disappointing when they need to change and when our family situations become beyond our control. Just be creative and see if you can come up with a new "tradition" with the two of you. And yes we all have those days but we are all in this together and sometimes it helps us get back on track just knowing that. And we are all entitled to feel down now and then.

Lynn,
You are not wallowing in self pity--you are disappointed. A big disappointment. The holidays for me are always one disappointment after another as we have so many family 'issues' going on. I love my family but dread the get togethers sometimes. I was reading on Oprah's site yesterday about the holidays and family issues.

You always do well Lynn--you have already shown that you are in this for the long haul. We are all human and need comfort at times--and you needed it big time yesterday. It will be ok, don't beat yourself up over it. I know you will be alright and are back on track already. I have gone days with bad eating when emotional issues get me down.

It's ok to think about you and not always others. You are a good kind person, I can tell from your posts. So take care of you today.

Lots of love and huggs to you!
Von

I was doing SO WELL until yesterday when I found out my Mom won't be able to join us for Christmas as planned. That means it'll just be DH and me on Christmas morning. (DD and SIL will be away visiting his family this year, and DS and DIL live 500 miles away). I felt so sad all afternoon and ate, ate, ate to comfort myself - to the tune of over 2,000 calories. sigh My head knows better, but my heart wasn't listening.
Today is a new day, and I know I have so much to be thankful for. No more wallowing in self pity... I'm off to work off my "sins" on the treadmill and think about how I can focus on others (who have REAL problems)instead of myself.

Hi MNNICE,
Glad you posted here!
Yes, we all fall off the healthy weight loss/maintenance wagon. But this is a life style of being healthy as you know, so we all dust ourselves off and get back on the wagon as soon as we can. No body should feel guilty as we are human...lol. If we feel guilty then we will binge! (been there, done that...lol). So it is best to just jump back on and start the next minute after a mess up or binge.

You did great! emoticon I am proud of you-that's what this lifestyle is all about!

And you're right, you are not alone--we are all in this together! emoticon

I was doing better than fine yesterday, with weight down and all going well, so I figured it was okay to have frozen pizza for supper. And it was... but it led to a carb and sweets binge that included... well, I won't say what all it included. Just say I exceeded my calorie range by about 600. It is comforting to read that those of you who inspire me with your dedication also fall off the wagon from time to time. Sometimes just knowing you're not alone is all it takes to get back on track. And I have done that so far today.

I confess-- I fell off the wagon on Saturday!

DH and I went out to dinner for our anniversary-the same place we always do. Instead of ordering a Chicken salad like I normally do--I ordered the Italian Sampler platter. It had lasagne, gnocki, ravioli and spaghetti. I shared some with DH and only ate half.

My favorite foods are spaghetti and hot dogs. I don't like the wheat spaghetti, so we don't have spaghetti at home.

But Sunday was another day--I jumped back on the 'healthy wagon' and did well yesterday.

Glad to see you back on the wagon!!

Sigh. I did it again. I zoomed around doing errands all morning and didn't stop for a proper lunch. By 2:00pm I was FAMISHED and ate way too much when I got home. Ah well, at least I got my exercise and water in. Tomorrow is a new day.

Hey Carole,
I didn't miss your post. Just jump back on the wagon. Get involved in writing your foods down and writing out your goals. Start with small ones-things you'll do on a daily basis and then bigger ones like so many pounds or a more healthy BMI. Try to keep the enthusiasm there by making you the priority every day!

I see from your other posts you did do well today. I think it is a great idea to keep a journal. We can check our different moods to see if that affects us. Hormones and certain foods we eat or don't eat can affect our mood. So journalising is a great way to find out what is going on.

Also you may think certain stresses aren't bothering you, but by journalising you can write down what is going on and how it makes you feel. Then you can check back on any patterns of mood or feelings and figure out how you got there.

Have a great weekend Lynn and see you on Monday!

Yesterday, out of the blue, and after doing so well through Halloween, I fell off the wagon big time. I ate WAY too much, didn't exercise, didn't even drink my water. I have to sit down and think about what triggered this binge. I have a few stresses and concerns in my life right now, but nothing life threatening. I think I should start a journal to see what's happening on a deeper level. Well today is a new day, so I will pick myself up (again), dust myself off, and get back on track. I WILL get on the TM and run off some of yesterday's sins.

Hi! I'm new to the team and have just found this thread. I have to confess that, after a very promising start with SP, I have completely messed up and need a big rethink. My motivation seemed to disappear and now I am hoping to reignite the Spark!

Hi Nell, I think this is an inspiring thread too. It's nice to unload it here, then start back on track right away.

Yes Lynn, I still have candy left from Halloween and DH just handed me a hershey bar with almonds and I confess...I ate it! emoticon

But back on track...
kickin' the binge monster back emoticon

I'll go log in the hershey bar on my tracker emoticon

You know, just reading these posts reminds me not to overdo. It's almost like sharing at a meeting. I'll have to come back here and reread it all when the boredom or stress hits.

Linda... I hope you are on back track and in control. Such things happen, but thankfully, it is not the end... We always can choose to leave it yesterday's problem and become positive today!

Halloween Friday and Saturday.... Ate too much candy! Done. Over. Today is a new day and it starts with today. The sun is shining and it should be in the upper 60s. Good healthy food and a nice bike ride should make it a positive one!

Whar are your positive plans for today?

I have messed up big time for a week. I have binged and pigged out due to what is going on in my life. I have let this situation take over how I feel, how I exercise, and made food my best friend

I started 3/6/07 at 149. I have lost almost 22 pounds.

Yep, last Friday night we went out for dinner and I ordered wisely and then brought half of it home, feeling quite smug. BUT, I also brought a piece of apple pie home, which wouldn't have been bad because I was still within my calories for the day. HOWEVER, it got that "sweets" craving going and I went to the freezer and scooped out a HUGE bowl of ice cream. It's nice to know we all have problems with this. I guess the main thing is just getting right back on track.

Hi all,
I thought of this thread as I ate a 3/4 bag of marshmellows yesterday. And thought a thread like this might help us all come together knowing we all mess up.

I know why I did it. --stress eating.
I drank a half a bottle of water and jumped right back on track that minute and told myself I need to limit the time I watch the weather channel....lol.

I got that idea of jumping back on track the very next minute I mess up from 'Fergie' Sarah Furguson. She is the spokesperson for weight watchers.

I try not to feel guilty, but felt like kicking myself in the butt! Especially knowing today was weigh in day.

As of now---I am back on track emoticon
