I definately have issues with some of the run around. I am a visually impaired vet and yet the VA still makes me go through my primary care MD to see my eye doc. Now where does that make sence?

I use the VA in Dayton, OH. They have been awesome....from my primary physician to the folks in podiatry who totally rebuilt my foot.

I love Long Beach VAMC. They are the first ones to listen to me when I told them my back hurt. For 25 years I've been complaining to various doctors about my back and they all just told me to lose weight and the pain would go away. When I went to the VA about it, they sent me to get an MRI and now I've got a diagnosis of herniated and disintegrating disks and I'm on the road to getting it fixed.

Sometimes they can be a pain in the neck, but my complaints so far have only been with the business office about such things as their losing my means test and my having to resubmit (twice) and billing me for an appointment when I don't have a co-pay (once). I have absolutely no complaint about the medical staff so far.

The thought that keeps going through my little brain - if the government has trouble operating the VA Hospitals and Clinics how are they going to manage healthcare for everyone. Don't get me wrong - I am 100% behind our new president, but I have sent my concerns to the White House. emoticon

I use the VA hospital for my medical needs as well as counseling. One thing that I am upset about is with the Dept. of VA and how they take forever to make decisions on disability claims and then offer the absolute minimum for an injury that will affect a vet for their entire life so that the vet has to keep going back and fighting to get what they deserve. RIDICULOUS!!! I thought these people had been in our shoes. Guess I was wrong!

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, margarita in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally wornout and screaming, "WOO HOO!! What a Ride!!!

Update - very upset with the Department of the VA - not a specific hospital. They did not renew the contract with the local clinic that I have been going to for 7 years. They awarded the contract to a new group and are in the process of opening a new clinic in town. IMHO, they have already violated their agreement with the VA, because they are scheduled to open on June 1st, but the clinic is not ready to open. My former VA clinic doesn't know whether to keep treating veterans until the clinic opens or not (I spoke with my doctor Thursday). Their contract ends today. I like the doctor I have been seeing and it is good to go to someone who KNOWs me, knows my history, and takes the time to look at my record. One of the reasons I dislike going to the VA in Memphis - is - it is always a new doctor, a new intern and they don't take the time (or have it), to review my records. So you have to answer all the questions, over and over. They just don't know you. I have blue cross through my employer at a low rate, so I can continue to see my doctor and use my insurance. However, he will no longer be allowed to order meds for me thru the VA. So I would have to pay a big co-pay (most presciptions it is $50 per 30 day supply versus the $8 I pay the VA). So that can get expensive real fast. I am very angry at the VA right now for doing this. And come tomorrow, we will actually be without a clinic until the new one opens, which no one knows when that will be.

Just venting! emoticon

I've had good experience with the VA here. There is a satelite clinic in my town. I've seen the same doctor there for 7 years (which I love!). I see him for routine care. If I need surgery or mammograms, etc., I go to the VA in Memphis. I have always been treated really well (and for the most part, prompt) by the folks at that VA. I also have very inexpensive employer Blue Cross insurance - so I use it from time to time - when I don't feel like making the drive to Memphis, etc. I am not drawing any type of disability like most of my retired military friends. So I am a low-category veteran and sometimes have to pay a co-pay. But it isn't much.

Each state also has veterans assistance. Each state is different in what they offer. Many also have VFW. DAV, American Legion post. We are here to help & also need help in doing our community services.

If I have not told you "Thank You for your service".

I do use the VA on a somewhat regular basis. Since I collect disability, I found that if I use another health care provider, I will get word from the VA that they want to take away my disability because they think that I'm no longer having problems. So . . . I do use them. For the most part I've had good experiences-and I've been to many different VA hospitals-in about 5 different states! I had a problem at only one of them-in Alexandria, Louisiana. The doctor didn't speak English well so I had a hard time communicating with him and he didn't even seem to want to listen to my concerns. And if he did hear and understand them, he didn't respond to them.
