Glad to hear things are going well with your recovery. I also had AVN.

I am amazed at some of the quick recoveries I am reading about. I had my left hip replaced on May 28, 2013...AVN and arthritis. I teach elementary special education so I will have all summer to recover. I am praying that I won't have to do the right hip next summer. My adult daughters and son-in-law have been helping me at my home. I have a tri-level, so that has been challenging. I use my cane on the stairs and at times for balance. I am feeling stronger everyday but still need plenty of time to rest through out the day. I am enjoying being back on Sparkpeople after being gone for over a year. I am a yo-yo dieter. My range is 148-227 though I have been steady around 200 for the past 10 years. Looking forward to getting my BMI normal weight of 178.

Tnyterror - This was a post from April, so the surgery had taken place ....just wanted to let you know.

Good luck with your surgery. You won't regret doing it. Sure it is scary, but so worth it. I didn't have time to scared when I had mine, because I was diagnosed and scheduled it right away. I did that because I wanted to be free of pain. I would do it again in a heartbeat if I had to.

Well, today I had the ultimate challenge: field trip to the Seattle Aquarium with second graders! This involved a lot of walking, and climbing stairs, about five miles total, as well as corralling a couple of boys. Like herding cats. It was a beautiful day and I survived! I took my cane to keep my gait even. I did great. 8.5 weeks post surgery!

..and the cares of tomorrow can wait, 'till this day is done.

Hi everybody! I'm now a little more than 2 months post surgery. Like have had the clearance from my surgeon to be as active as I can tolerate. 17 days post I was back to work, a week later I was driving again. Today I was fishing on our boat with my family. I garden, do house work, and try to keep active. Life is good and I'm looking forward to an active pain free summer! Thanks for your support- it was really important to my recovery.

I had my left hip joint replacement in December, and I am so glad I did it. It is making a difference in my life: I am able to do things that I could not do without excruciating pain before the surgery. It is not quite 6 months from my surgery, and I am pushing a grocery cart in the grocery store, walking to church, gardening, and riding my bicycle (first time this past week). Too bad the surgery didn't take care of the arthritis and deteriation in my back. If it had, I would be nearly perfect. LOL. emoticon

Are you having a physical therapist come to your house? Listen to them, and do the exercises. I should still be doing my everyday, but sometimes I forget; however, I am so much stronger. Be patient with your body. It will get stronger as you do more. I cannot believe how much muscle I had lost: they keep reminding me. I had gotten so sedentary, because of pain. At first, it seemed like I hurt everytime I added another activity (not in my hip or leg, necessarily), but in my calves, my knees, my back, my shoulders, my chest, my arms. I would ice those places and use a heating pad, take some ibuprofen, and rest if I was miserable; but, when I felt better, I would get going again. Now, 6 months since my surgery, I am amazed at the change in what I can do; and I am dealing with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome too. I must add that I am thankful to God for helping me to do the things I need to do to heal.

I hope telling you about my progress is an encouragement. I did not mean to talk about myself so much.

Hugs,

Debby

Good luck! It'll be great :)

I'm 31 and had both of mine done last summer, 8 weeks apart, and life is amazing now. I go to the gym for hours at a time, i work full time at a fast food place (most days with no break to sit and rest), and can do anything i want with my 5 year old now :) Life changing for sure!

I had mine done in December. It is great not having the arthritic pain in that joint, and the muscles have healed well. I am definitely glad I had the surgery.

Don't be nervous if you have a good surgeon, You will do well. Being pain free after all is healed will be a blessing. After surgery, do your exercises and walk, walk and walk. I walked with my walker first, then a cane and about 3 months later with nothing. Make sure you have a grabber or two around the house, as you won't be able to bend down for a while. It's amazing how much stuff falls on the floor when you are not able to pick it up. I was 67 when I had mine done. I had mine done in July and by December, when I walked up a 15 step flight of stairs with no pain, I was so excited. I was also walking about a mile or more by then too. When weather was bad, I went to Walmart to walk several times around the store. You will do great. We are here to help make recovery easier. Figured out lots of little tips to make things easier during our recoveries.

I was 42 when I had my left THR and that was 5 yrs ago. Hard to believe it has already been that long. I guess I really didn't have time to worry about surgery, because I was in so much pain and if it meant relief I was at peace with my decision. I really had no choice because I had Avascular Necrosis of the bone and it was at stage 4 - worst you can get...so it had to be done. I only got really nervous the day of surgery and only because I thought they were going to postpone it. There were issues with my bloodwork, which I don't remember what they were, but they decided to go ahead afterall and I was fine.

You will be fine. I am a single person and live alone, so I spent time in a nursing facility for nearly 2 wks. I won't do that again if I can help it. I will go home or stay at my sister's and have someone there with me.

Hi folks,
I will have my lft hip joint replaced on Thursday morning. I go through periods of being really nervous about it and at peace about it. I am really confident in my surgeon, which helps. I am 53, so I am not too young for this. I am ready...my husband and teenage son will be here to help me out and I think I will turn out better than ever. I have been reading everyone's posts with great interest. Thank you.

..and the cares of tomorrow can wait, 'till this day is done.
