One of the new activities in P90X2 is an emphasis on foam rolling. You don't have to do P90X2 to do foam rolling.
I am a believer! Wow - it loosens up tight muscles, relieves pain, releases tension and increases flexibility. Sounds too good to be true, but it is!
I work in front of a computer most of the day. I get hunched over the keyboard, shoulders forward, head down, forearms sore from typing all day. Sound familiar?
Today I had to participate in a webinar. Participate as in listen and watch - I was not presenting. So, while I listened and watched, I foam rolled my shoulders, my back, my calfs, my IT bands and even my forearms. That one surprised me - how good it felt to relieve some tension in my forearms from all the typing. And to do my back - open up my shoulder blades and chest - just the opposite of hunching over the keyboard. I could take deep breaths! Wow!
My wife, Linda, and I treated ourselves to massages over the Memorial Day weekend. I mentioned my foam rolling to my massage therapist. As she was working me over, she said "you don't need to come in here any more. You shoulders and back feel great. Your foam rolling is taking my place."
So there you go - get a foam roller and get a massage when ever you want. Take a break from your computer. Do it while you watch TV. Don't need to change into workout clothes. It can be as long or short as you want. You can focus on whatever "hot spot" you have at the time.
Working on the computer? Do your shoulders and arms. Just get back from a run? Do your calves and IT bands. Just want to close your eyes and get away from all the electronic stimulation? Just get on the foam roller and go to your happy place!!! :)
