Linda, 9 miles hiking IS NOT SLACKING! I am a hiker also, I was a hiker before I was a runner and I hope that I will be a hiker after I can no longer run. Hiking is great cross training and sometimes we need a hike more then we need the run.
The important thing is that you are burning calories and enjoying yourself in the process. Sometimes I get too hung up on how many times a week and how many miles I have run. But you know what? I am still doing something that is great for my mind and body whenever I hike, walk or bike or run. It's all good!

Live your life as though you are obligated to make the world a better place. Make a difference today.

Hey Linda, Hiking for 9 miles up and down hills is GREAT exercise so no need to apologize. It just makes me wonder whether the reason you are in a running slump is that you really enjoy hiking and walking more than running. If that's the case, maybe your slump is telling you to focus on what you enjoy. What do you think?

Unfortunately I'm still slacking. It was such a beautiful day I chose to go hiking instead of running. Great cross training though. Up and down hills climbing higher and higher and did a little over 9 miles. Not going to run today because I'm resting my legs but really going to try to get moving on running again tomorrow and get out of this slump.

This morning I actually got out at 7:46 - a full hour earlier than usual - and it was so much cooler it was amazing. But by the time I finished at 8:31 it was at least 10 degrees warmer. Now that I know how much nicer it is an hour earlier I really need to get adjusted to the earlier schedule.

I hope your weather is better today!

Today I'm going to be busy at a Family Fun and Fitness event volunteering so not getting a chance to get the run in today because I had things to do this morning. But tomorrow I want to get back on track with a run and a hike.

Have a great day everyone!

I just got back from my Saturday run and I feel like I'm sweating puddles onto the floor!! I got out the door at 8:47, which is pretty much my "normal" time but it was warmer than it has been. I can see that I'm going to need to get out earlier. I am NOT thrilled at the prospect!!

Going to work on my out of slump plan some more. I took part in a big event last weekend that I did a little running and a lot of walking for 11 miles, in hotter than normal temps (mid 80's by late morning) and I've been recovering from it this week and doing some other things. Going to get back on track again though. Glad you're doing so great!

I didn't get out the door until 9:15 yesterday so it was a little warmer than I like but I ran 2.1 miles anyway. I feel like I am pretty much out of my slump but I feel bad that I'm not seeing more positive news from the rest of you. Cathy, did you get out again in the morning? On Saturday I didn't run because my hip was sore. The problem is caused by a very old injury that "recurs" every so often. It really hurts while it's going on but then it just disappears until the next time. So I was very bummed on Saturday. On Sunday the hip was better but I couldn't run on Sunday because that would disrupt the whole running schedule. This morning I felt fine and the weather was beautiful. I managed to get out the door at 8:45 and I ran my two miles. I am so relieved that missing Saturday didn't send me right back into a slump!!!

How are you all doing????

There really are a lot of obstacles to overcome in order to maintain a running program. If I had to run at noon and then go back to work I doubt very much that I would EVER get out to run. And I don't run when it's dark out so that means I can never run at night. So with all those obstacles in your path, you deserve double points every time you manage to find a way to get your run done. Just keep on keeping on!!

My day got out of control yesterday so I didn't get home until 7:30 pm when it was too late for a 40 minute run. The sidewalks in my neighborhood are very uneven and I don't want to risk a fall.

Since there was a little light, I went out for 10 minutes with the dog. Not enough to count as a run, but enough to assuage the guilt a little bit.

One day at a time...

i run at noon from work, so the bag at home and me at work isn't so good! i ran today--it was crazy with about a 20+ mph wind. i kept getting pushed to the edge of the sidewalk, but it was actually fun! getting up and out works better for me on the weekend, because if i don't go first thing, i spend the day knowing i've still gotta run and trying to fit it in. i'm still trying to get all my ducks in a row again--they got kinda out of order during the winter.

Cathy,

Official day is no big deal as long as you get out and run any 3 days of the week. When you take your running stuff with you do you run after work? And do you run near work or near home? I'm just wondering if there's a way to make it easier to fit running into your day.

I know that for me the earlier I can get out, run and get back the better. I got out this morning at 8:50 a.m. and ran 2.3 miles. Then it was done for the day and I didn't have that big guilt cloud hanging over my head. On Saturday I'm going to try to get out even earlier.

Let us know what happens tomorrow.

well, i don't think i've ever be able to say i love running, but it was enjoyable. my running stuff stayed safely packed on my kitchen floor where i left it last night so i woudn't forget to take it, so so much for today. however, i will be taking it tomorrow even tho that's not an "official" running day.

Made a quick trip to San Francisco this weekend to see my grandson, and that meant no runs. But when I got home from the airport yesterday I did a 3.5 miler. I felt awful, and it was in the 80s already, so it was miserable. But it got done. I'm looking forward to the day when a run feels good. It's been entirely too long, and I'm ready to be out of this slump.

Way to go Linda and Cathy!!

Linda, whew, what a workout!! And you also got to the gym in spite of the bad weather. I have been known to use bad weather as an excuse for staying home so you did a lot better than I would have done.

Cathy, your weather sounds like ours and it really does make a difference. Isn't it great to remember that you really enjoy running!!!

Great job Sondra! I haven't run since Friday but I did do an awesome uphill hike on Saturday that really worked those leg and back muscles as well as my cardio because it was a climb up a high hill. Yesterday weather was really nasty and I went to the gym but I used the stationary bike for an hour instead of the treadmill and did a strength training workout. Hopefully I can get out for a run later today if the weather clears a little and doesn't have the high winds and blowing dust we had yesterday. Knocked electrical lines down in some places it was so bad.

Hi all,

Reporting in for Monday. I ran 2.1 miles and I managed to get out the door one hour earlier than usual - 8:45 a.m. instead of 9:45 a.m. It really did make a difference in the temperature. It was beautiful. I find that my endurance is still not back to where it was before my slump so I need to work on building that up but at least I am back on track.

I'd love to hear how you are all doing.

Here's my report for Saturday. I ran two miles even though I got out later than I had hoped and it was already pretty warm. So that means I ran Monday, Wednesday and Saturday just as I had planned. I am VERY pleased!!! But on Monday I will make a greater effort to get started earlier.

I can't imagine 2 am either but if I had a running group to run with I might decide to do it with them. Just not sure.
I got out and did 2 miles on the trails today. Followed it up with another 3.5 miles of hiking to finish it off. So I ran Saturday, Monday, and today which is a streak for me LOL!

I am so excited by how well we are all doing and I really do think it helps to know you are going to need to report to everyone.

Tomorrow is my next running day. Today I normally would have gone to a Pilates class but it was cancelled so maybe I will walk instead but I don't want to wear out my legs for tomorrow's run. We'll see.

I must confess that I will never be as committed to running as Dee is. Getting up at 2 a.m. to run is beyond my wildest imagination. Cathy, I have friends who live in Alabama about half an hour from Pensacola and I can tell you that you have much hotter and more humid weather than I do. Fortunately, I shouldn't need to worry about the heat until late May.

In the meantime, here's to everyone who got out and ran this week - YAY US!!!

Sounds like many of us have heat to contend with! For long runs my training group starts in the middle of the night when we get up in the 15+ miles. That can mean starting at 2 am by the time we're doing 20+.

Well, I got out there yesterday even though I didn't feel like it, and of course felt great by the end of the run. I will try to hold onto that feeling the next time I don't feel like it. During the week I run in the late afternoon, so it's hot and humid. I tell myself it's good training experience, LOL.

i live in pensacola, florida--right next to alabama! we had our first heat index today--wah! it was only 1 degree, so it was 81, not 80, but it still means real heat is coming. i survived tho, so now that's 2 for this week. longest stretch i've had since january i think!

Hi Dee,

I live in Florida, about midway between Tampa and Sarasota. It does get pretty hot here in the summer. I am trying to get myself out the door earlier in the day when it's coolest. It would be perfect if I could be out the door right after the sun comes up but being more realistic I am aiming for 9 a.m.

Sondra, I run outside year round, and last year that meant 100 plus degrees in the summer. Of course it also meant slowing down tremendously. Where are you located?

I have done the Bataan Death March Memorial the past 2 years so this will be my third. It is just such an inspirational event. Everyone wears a timing chip but it's not really about the time. The only awards are for the first 2 places in the 26.2 mile event. There was over 6,000 last year, about 2/3rd of them military in uniform. There are also past military and civilians. It's a rememberance honoring those men who were in the original Death March but it's also to me to honor all our past and present military.

Didn't run yesterday because my legs were hurting from runs on Saturday and Monday and Hiking on Sunday and water aerobics on Tuesday so I decided to give them a rest and do it today. I'm just getting back in to realy sticking to my overall exercise consistently as well as running and I don't want to injure myself by taking it too fast.

Awesome job to those who reported their runs!

Linda, I am so glad to hear you are running again!

I am reporting in to the group that I ran two miles this morning and I feel great! I had forgotten how good it feels to run - including the feeling of your halo shining for having done it.

I have to confess that I have the advantage of working part-time on a consulting basis so most of the time I have a fair amount of control over my work schedule. But even for me there are times when work trumps running because I put a pretty high priority on paying the bills!!!

My next scheduled running day is Saturday so I'll let you all know how I do. Knowing that I need to report to you really does help me get out the door!

I'm in too. I ran on Saturday for 20 minutes and then on Monday on a trail for 30 minutes. My goal is to get out there again today and Friday. The days I run will vary some and next week will be somewhat off and I'll run early in the week but on the 24th I'm doing a 15 mile run/walk (mostly walking for me) event called the Bataan Death March Memorial at White Sands missile range and so the latter part of next week I need to rest my legs somewhat for 2 or 3 days before since I don't bounce back quickly.
Great topic here. Good luck everyone and I'll be following you.

I read that, too! I think it makes good points. One thing I've noticed about my friends: my thin ones don't give themselves "breaks" from eating well and exercising, and my heavy ones frequently excuse themselves from making healthy choices. I'm trying to be more aware of my own choices in all respects.

i forgot about work in my "rules". if you punch in at 7:40 and don't get a chance to sit down until 7:10, and don't even get outside, much less run, that counts as a bye for the day, right??! at least it wasn't a great day outside until i got home, so i did get to spend about 20 minutes outside enjoying the sunset. so i'm going to move today to tomorrow and try again.

I've been in a bad place emotionally for about a week. I got a keratin treatment at the salon this weekend as a pick-me-up (thinking that if I looked better, I'd feel better) and then found out that I can't get it wet for four days -- so no exercise. That has really been a bummer. I'm hoping to kick all this stinkin' thinkin' to the curb and get back on plan.

Cathy and Dee,

Count me in. To start I will run Monday, Wednesday and Saturday outside. I need to get back to running on the treadmill by June because by then it will be too hot to run outside but that's a worry for the future. For now I'm just going to focus on getting out there 3 days a week.

Yes, I'm definitely in a slump.
I'll be happy if I run twice this week - Monday and Thursday. Saturday I'll be traveling out of town, so can't do my long run.

several of us are in a slump and need motivation/support. so what we are planning to do is list our running plans, either time, day, distance, whatever your plan is and then post here and let us know how you did. if you run outside only like me, you can plead rain, or if are sick, that counts, or if you have children or other family obligations and have to go to something with them, that counts.

so here's my plan: tuesday, thursday, sunday. log on the day you scheduled yourself and let us know how you did, even if you didn't run and maybe find motivation for the next time.

so if you need motivation,or want to motivate someone else, sign on!
