welcome to our little group! sounds like you've got a plan, so that should qualify for "de-slumping"! i'll be the first to admit i really don't like to run and i basically do it because i have to. i so wish i could be one of those people who love to run, but my idea of a great day is warm (not hot) sun and a good book with nothing to do all day. exercise is NO where in that recipe!

Don't know if slump is the proper term, but it is time for me to start speed work for real. I've been running (run-walk-run) mostly half marathons, long and slow, but now is time to change to 5Ks as I want to qualify for National Senior Games. I did run a 5K on Nov 30th in 29:05. To qualify for NSG I'll need a 28:09 or better for the age 65-69. My PR, earned in April of this year was 27:33. But I had an injury soon after (glute area) and don't trust that training program. It had me running 4 days per week, and I am thinking I need a day off between each run. I think what really got me was too much hill work too soon.

I see from scanning through these posts that some of you are dealing with some big issues. Hope to get to know each of you and I would love it if I could offer something helpful.

linda, you need to tell your therapist that you've got to get out walking soon, so you can start collecting $$ again before sondra and i pass you by! but then considering how far ahead of us you are, you probably have lots of time to achieve that goal!

sondra, do you think your fitness minutes might be a bit high for december? sometimes you just run out of time. do what you can. if you can't do an hour, then see if you have time for 15 minutes. it's certainly better than none and you won't feel as guilty about it. and i know i won't do great the next couple of weeks with christmas and then i'm going to atlanta for a week, but i'll do what i can. you can re-set your priorities in january--god knows that it's not that far away!

hope you both have a good tuesday!

Linda, I found a beautiful bright shiny penny at Publix which I am dedicating to you too! You won't get rich at this rate but at least you know that Cathy and I are thinking of you and cheering for you. Keep up the great progress you're making and let us hear from you when you can.

I have been having a very tough December. I'm way off the track on my fitness minutes but this is always a hard month for me and I'm sure things will improve in January.

I completely agree with Cathy. I am relieved to hear that you'll be staying with your son. Much as you love your daughters and grandchildren, all that you were doing for them had to be stressful. You really need to let someone take care of you for a change so that you can recover. In the meantime, if your daughters don't have you to lean on they might step up to the plate. Let's hope this turns out to be a good thing for everyone. Please stay in touch and let us know how you're doing. We really do care.

from what i've heard, the emotional part of a stroke can be difficult because of the disruption in your life and from the physical part of it too.

for what it's worth, from what you've said, it's time to let your NM children take care of themselves and you take care of you. sounds like your son is stepping up to the plate to help you so that's good.

glad you're moving forward. take it easy and let us know how you do. :-)

Thanks you guys. I'm learning from different resources that it's normal to go through a range of emotions, and I'm sometimes feeling those now! Still waiting to hear from the outpatient rehab today or tomorrow. We ended up with Friday thru Monday with lots of things shut down here in Fort Worth due to the ice and snow, which they said was the worst in decades. I am planning on staying here in TX at my oldest son's house indefinitely and right now an not planning on returning to New Mexico or bringing them to me. Time for them to grow up and me to take care of myself. I believe too much stress had a lot to do with this.
Maybe more later! I've found out how important my online connections are. I kind of knew it but now know it in a different way!

linda, how frightening this must have been for you! no wonder we haven't heard from you--guess we were right to worry. i'm so sorry. all that hiking and walking you've been doing might have actually saved your life and i'm sure it will make your rehab better.

take care and let us know how you are doing. even if you just sign on and say hi, i'm ok, that would be good. :-)

Linda, you are doing SO well!! I am just amazed. And I know several people who have had strokes and who didn't recover as quickly as you seem to be recovering. The fact that you were able to send that message - even if you had trouble doing it - is absolutely wonderful. I'm sure the doctors are right when they say that your general fitness before the stroke made a huge difference in your survival and in your rehab.

So when you say you will be going to for outpatient therapy 10 minutes from home does that mean in New Mexico? If it does I hope your daughters are going to be able to help you and be supportive. That can also make a difference in the speed of your recovery. But bottom line I am just so happy that you're doing so well. I think about you a lot and keep you in my prayers. Please stay in touch with Cathy and me so we can keep cheering you on to that complete recovery!

I am on the computer more but do better with point and click than with actual typing. Still having some trouble with the writing. Iím still seeing kind of blurry although somewhat better. Iím been at my sonís house in Fort Worth since late afternoon Dec 3rd. Before that I was in a hospital in Dallas that also specialized in rehab, and had about 4 hours of speech, physical, occupational, and recreational rehab a day. I was there from Nov 21 until Dec. 3rd. The day I had a stoke with a severe brain bleed was Oct 31 in the morning at home with both my grown daughters and youngest son (I have 5 grown kids). I was taken by ambulance to Gila Regional Medical Center there, then flown out that evening to Phoenix where I was until early Nov 21. So it seems Iíve been all around. And Iíve never spent over a month in hospitals before!
So now Iím walking with a walker, have some weakness on all of my right side, and some vision problems. I have to type anything in Word first, then copy and paste to Spark or Facebook or I accidentally erase the whole thing. In Word I can use the function to retype what I accidentally erased. I canít do that in some apps. Iíve started this before and erased it in Spark before till I gave up.
I get dizzy when I turn and am way slower than I was. I am expected to make a full recovery in a few months or so. I went for an eval/orientation last Thursday at an outpatient facility about 10 minutes for home that will be about 3 hours a day. I should start in the next couple of days once they have all the insurance and other approvals complete At this point now Iím ready for something to focus on again, besides how cold it is outside.
The doctors, nurses, therapists, etc say the reason I have done what I have and am not in worse shape, is because of the condition I was before I had the stroke. I almost died. So keep up on getting fit because it pays off not just now but if something happens too!

Cathy, It definitely sounds like you are back on track and kickin butt! Did you keep your streak going all this week???

Your description of your Y is very funny. Our Y is in what used to be a grade school but they did a really great job of rehabbing and retrofitting it. You can still absolutely tell what it used to be but they make very good use of the space. One exception to that at the moment is TRX. They would love to start a group TRX class but they're having trouble finding a place to set it up. At home, all you need is a door that closes. If you haven't already watched a TRX video online you should. It gives you a very clear picture of how you set up TRX at home.

I had a good fitness week. I made my 300 minutes for the week already, which means that I am taking tomorrow off. My rowing skills continue to improve - slowly - and so does my running endurance. I ran on Monday and Wednesday and each time I ran a tiny bit farther and a tiny bit longer. More important, I actually found a penny on Monday and then found another penny on Wednesday. That's the first time I've found a coin two days in a row this entire year!! So I'm taking that as a sign that I'm on the right track.

Linda, if you're reading this, please let us know how you're doing. I'm worried because I haven't seen any posts from you in weeks. Please know that we're thinking of you and pulling for you and your family.

I'm off to start my Saturday errands. Hope you both have a great weekend.

sondra, you are kicking butt with all your minutes--way to go! i've been waiting to hear how TRX went. i didn't know you could do it at home. i think i'll check into it. what a joke--my Y getting TRX. that building is so old the spin room is separated by a 2nd-story breezeway. you go down stairs to the ladies' locker room, back up the stairs on the other side, thru a small room with a big punching bag, across the breezeway, and then down another flight of stairs, just to get to the spinning room!! but i read something that having to do that going back is an almost-perfect cool down. we're supposedly getting new spin bikes, i think in january, but i'm not holding my breath.

i did manage to get back on track this past week pretty well. i had a lunch meeting monday and i forgot my shirt wednesday :-( so i didn't go to spinning either day, but i did run and then do spinning friday. and chalean a couple of times. i'm trying to get a habit going before the holidays get here so i don't get sidetracked.

linda, hope everything's going ok.

have a good sunday!

Another crazy week so it has taken until today for me to have time to get back to you.

In a word, TRX is GREAT!!! I really love it. You do very familiar body-weight-only exercises like push-ups and crunches but you do them while your weight is supported by the straps that are fastened to a bar overhead. The fact that you are supported allows you to do these familiar exercises with your body at very unfamiliar angles, which makes the exercises more challenging.

For the first session Danielle just introduced me to the set-up and had me try exercises for all the main areas of the body, really just to get the feel of holding on to the handles of the TRX straps and getting comfortable with the idea that the straps will support me. Next session she'll have me combine several exercises into a routine that you just do without stopping. What's really cool is that it makes me feel like a female version of Superman or maybe a trapeze artist. It is kind of an amazing feeling.

You can do TRX at home - and, in fact, one of my friends at the Y does that in addition to sessions at the Y - but I know myself well enough to know that if I got the TRX straps for use at home they'd just sit in the box and I'd never use them. I need the discipline of going to the Y and working with a trainer. Maybe you would do better since you have been able to do Chalean at home. But I really think you should convince the people at your Y to offer TRX.

As far as keeping up with my plan, so far for November I have 601 fitness minutes so I should be able to get to 1200 by the end of the month. Cathy, how are you doing? Are you back on track now? Are you still spinning and running and Chaleaning?

Linda, I'd love to hear even a few words from you just to know how things are going.

Hope you both have a lovely weekend.

glad you wrote sondra, because i'm really anxious to hear about TRX. i was doing pretty well with my streak. but my boyfriend got here wednesday evening and left this morning, so i obviously didn't stay too much on track! but--i did watch (somewhat) what i was eating and i'm ready to get back at it tomorrow. it's supposed to be pleasantly cool this week, so it should actually be pleasant.

i'm glad you're getting back to running without putting so much pressure on yourself. and you're obviously making progress, so that's good!

linda, hope you're doing ok. hope your job stress is a little better and your home life is settling down some. still don't know how you manage all that. :-)

have a good tuesday!

Sorry to be so delinquent in posting but the last few weeks have been crazy busy and my mind has been a muddle. I managed to get in 1,302 fitness minutes in October and I'm on track for November. Despite everything going on in my life I am managing to get in my exercise - which is probably all that is keeping me somewhat sane.

As you know I am slowly getting back to running. I'm running until I can't keep going, then walking until I can run again, and not worrying about how fast I'm going. Today I finally crossed a real milestone because I ran my whole half-mile loop for the first time since I quit running in May. Actually it was more like 6/10ths of a mile! So I am really proud of myself for that. Next goal is one mile but I promise you I'm not obsessing.

Tomorrow is my first TRX class so I'll let you know what that's like.

Cathy, I'd love to know how you're doing with spin, running, Chalean and your current streak.

Linda, I hope that things are going better for you, your granddaughter and the rest of your family. Let us know how you're doing if you can and know that I think about you often.

Wishing you both a good start to the week.

i didn't see that about journaling and my first response is the same as yours: not something i do. but only having to write down 5 things instead of writing a whole page of something useless is a much better idea.

i did much better on my minutes last week. i'm working really hard at getting my routine going again. i was mad at myself last thursday--it was absolutely beautiful and i left my running stuff at home! but i did make spinning all 3 days last week.

and linda would definitely not want to depend on me in the wild. i used to have a great sense of direction but not anymore. i can tell east and west from sunrise and sunset, but i'm lost inbetween.

another week--here we go!

This past week was really tough. I had too much to do and on Wednesday I never even got to the Y or did any other exercise at all. I did manage to get back on track but I won't make 300 minutes for the week. However, arithmetic has never been my strong suit. I realized at some point that except for February each month has either 30 or 31 days so I don't actually need to get 300 points each week in order to get 1200 points for the month. Now, most people would have realized this from the get go but it took me until yesterday, counting on my fingers, to figure it out. So the good news is that unless something really awful happens I will make 1200 minutes this month. In fact, I should be a little over 1200.

Cathy I was so happy to see that you had a great spin class leader who really pushed you. As I said when you were first thinking about spin class, the leader really makes a huge difference. A good leader can get you to do a lot more than you ever thought you could do. I'm really lucky because I have great leaders in both my spin classes and I know I am working harder because they motivate me to do more. So how has spin been going since then?

For the past few days it has been perfect running weather early in the morning - in the mid 60's. I'm still running only once a week but yesterday I was able to run a little farther than last Saturday and I'm sure the cooler weather helped a lot. I think by now it must be a lot colder in New Mexico but 60 is pretty cold for us. I even turned on the heat for the first time this morning.

Linda, I read your blog about your hike and I must admit that I still don't know how you have the sense of direction and the courage to go hiking out in the middle of nowhere all by yourself. I also loved the photos. They add so much. I really felt like I had a pretty good idea of what you were seeing as you hiked. And that's probably the only way I ever will see it so I hope you include photos more often.

I don't know whether either of you happened to see the article on Spark People a few days ago about using a journal to boost your self esteem. Now normally I am not a journal kind of person. In fact the very thought sends me running in the other direction. But the article was about every day just writing down 5 things you did that you feel good about. The idea is that if you do this for a while you'll see that you do a lot of good things and you'll feel better about yourself. I think it's an interesting idea and I'm thinking about trying it. What do you think???

So ladies, I hope you are doing well and getting the week off to a great start.

i was going to go spinning this afternoon but my allergies attacked me. i didn't figure it made a lot of sense to go to an aerobic class when i was already coughing, so i scrapped that. however--i did do chalean since it's not aerobic. and i gotta say, i'm dying. 3 days of that in a row and 1 spining and i'm dead. and i wallked 6 blocks to lunch and back. we got sprinkled on, but nothing worse.

so--i'm trying to figure out why i wasn't born skinny and fit. or at least skinny so fit would be easier! i got ripped off...

have a good wednesday!

I only had one fall in the dark, when we had some heavy rains and I slipped in some mud I didn't see that was really thick and deep stepping off a curb. Most of my accidents happen in broad daylight and not when I'm out hiking. They happen in town. I think I get a little too confident in broad daylight walking the streets.

Congratulations Cathy on the tiny streak. I know you can turn it into a bigger streak!

Have a great day

i totally agree with your dark-walking plan. considering how back i scraped my hand in the broad daylight, i'm very cautious in the dark.

i think i have a tiny streak going. i ran thursday, did spinning friday and today and did chalean last night and tonight. keep your fingers crossed! i seem to have a history of starting streaks and then completely bombing, so hopefully this will be different. :-)

have a good tuesday ladies!

Cathy glad your sister is tolerating well so far and she's feeling okay. Also that Karen turned out to be a non-hurricane and she's going to make it. I have not found anything the past 2 days. Sometimes I do good and sometimes very poorly when it comes to finding money.

I do have to watch where I step when I walk. When it's still dark out a lot of the streets I walk on have very little traffic and I can walk on the edge of the street. I can see headlights and move to the sidewalk if I need to in plenty of time. I find that walking on the street is much easier (on the side not down the middle of the road LOL) because it's pretty level. When I walk on the sidewalk there are often cracks in it, or I miss my step on driveways when I don't realize there is a driveway with a dip down from the regular sidewalk there. I usually have a little light with me too. Walking early in the morning there is less traffic than after dark in the evening. However I will be glad when the time changes and it's daylight closer to 6 am than 7 am.

Sondra sounds like you are really challenging yourself! Awesome! I don't think I could do some of the things you are doing.

I'm supposed to be working right now, so I guess I'd better get back to it. I posted a hiking blog this morning from a hike I did yesterday. Hadn't been hiking recently, or when I did I never got around to posting about it. Shame on me.

Hope you have a great week, both of you!

sondra, i'm so impressed with your rowing and TRX. i sure wish my Y had stuff like that. i don't know if could do TRX, but i'd sure like to try. and glad you were able to dodge the obstacle course successfully! spinning friday was awesome--and i never thought i'd say that! the girl that led the class really motivated me to try harder. the guy on mondays and wednesdays isn't near as energetic, but i'm planning to use what i learned friday to push myself a little harder.

my sister is doing ok--thanks for asking. she has this week off and then another treatment next monday. i guess her hair will start falling out after that one from what i understand. her son's senior homecoming is friday and she's feeling ok, so that will be good. they pushed it back 2 weeks because of karen, the non-hurricane and she was worried she wouldn't make it, but now she's going to, so that's great.

i found 2 pennies yesterday at target. i would say i'm catching up to linda, but the next time she posts she'll have found 57 cents or something. :-)

beautiful day here--i mowed the front yard and didn't even sweat! and that's the last time until next year, so that's done. i love fall--even the days getting shorter. i don't like winter, but i sure enjoy this time of year.

have a good monday ladies!

I hope you both had a good week and Cathy I hope your sister is able to take the chemo in stride. Were you able to get out and work on your goals this week? Cathy, I totally understand when you said you went to spin class even though you felt lousy and then felt better after the class. That's what always happens to me, too. Dragging myself to the Y or outside is the hardest part. Once I get started I'm fine and once it's over I feel great.

I am on track for 300 minutes this week but it took some doing. Yesterday I ran - just short intervals of running and walking - but I had forgotten that it was the second day of our community garage sale. There were cars everywhere and the drivers were looking at what was on display in people's driveways instead of looking at the road where I was running. I felt like I was taking my life in my hands!! I actually had to move to the sidewalk.

I have signed up for TRX training starting in November - a half hour session every Tuesday - and I am really looking forward to finding out what it's like. Meanwhile I am VERY slowly learning the coordination for rowing.

I hope you both get the week off to a good start and look forward to hearing how you're doing.

glad you listened to my advice and didn't stress yourself out sondra. me being a sports psychologist, right?? that might actually be an interesting job, but i wonder if you have to listen to people whine and whine about why they can't/won't/don't work out. i wouldn't like that part.

and you know, we all feel free to change the rules as we go, so i'm sure linda concurs with me that we'll let you count your running minutes--especially since it put you over your 300 mark. emoticon

walking in the dark takes a lot of concentration for me so i don't trip and kill myself! if i walk the same route several times, i learn what to watch out for, but i still have to be pretty cautious. it is kind of a nice end to the day, but i'm not sure i'd want to do it first thing in the morning. but it must be beautiful to see the sun come up if you're out at that time.

i found a penny in the parking lot at work this morning at 5:50 A.M. i'm sure there's some message from the universe there, but i can't figure it out... and i went to spinning. i felt really bad when i left for the Y--i don't know why i didn't talk myself out of going, but i didn't. i felt pretty bad a couple times, but i took it easy and made it through it. and i actually felt better after i finished. i hate it when that happens! :-)

have a good tuesday ladies!

Hi ladies!

Congratulations on the running Sondra! I'm doing better with the veggie but have yet to do the running. Did a 5 mile walk though this morning, and usually get 3 to 5 miles done most mornings. I do go out by 5:30 to do it though. I will be glad when we go off daylight savings time just so it won't be almost 7 am by the time the sun comes up. I have a little light I use though. This morning I saw another lady out early with a little light too. That's the first time I've seen anyone walking with a light. Haven't seen any runners with one. I do see bicyclists out early who of course have a light on their bike. I have a few routes I use most of the time that are fairly well lit. I have a fitbit that counts stairs, or hills, and I got the equivalent of 31 sets of stairs on the fitbit. Depending on which way I go, or how long my walk is, because of hills around here I can get at least 15 floors, and usually more than that. If I go up around our college campus area I can get about 35 floors. So think of climbing 31 floors while walking this morning. Of course, the up hills is easier than actually climbing 31 floors on the stairs to me. Fitbit doesn't count downhill, only uphill. I keep saying I need to get back to the gym too in order to do some different strength training than what I do at home. Sometimes I am pretty consistent at home, but sometimes it gets boring. I need to change it up a little. I like water aerobics at noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays to get strength training in with the foam weights in the water, but lately I haven't been able to work that out. I'm hoping I can get there tomorrow at noon.

As for what I do, I appreciate your comments. We each have our own talents and abilities. I like my visits with my people, but the computer work sometimes gets to me. But I couldn't be the hands on caregivers that many of them have. My daughter is good at that and has worked as a certified nursing assistant in nursing home before. And she is very good but hands on patient care is NOT for me. And I couldn't be a teacher either. I admire them for what they do but definitely not an area I'm able to have patience with. But each type of gift or ability is needed, so I am in a place that works for me (at least most of the time LOL. Those trainings and changes can make me wonder sometimes though!).

Cathy hope your sister is doing well. And hope you are both having a great Monday. Back to work now!

Well ladies, I actually did run this morning, at least a little bit.

I originally thought I would start over on the Rookie Running Program, which would have been walk 4 minutes, run 1 minute but, just like Linda a while ago, I decided that sounded too easy. Instead I did a sort of free-style walk and run: after a 5 minute warm-up walk.

I ran until I had to stop, walked and caught my breath, then ran again. The running intervals were probably 2 to 3 minutes and the walking intervals maybe a little less. I figure I probably ran a total of maybe 12 minutes. No PR - but Cathy you were absolutely right to warn me about it!!. However, the running was real running and not shuffle running so I'm very happy about that. I got out before 8 a.m. - which is the middle of the day for Linda but early for me - and it was really nice and cool so that helped a lot.

You may recall that I said running wouldn't count toward the 300 minutes but since we make the rules I changed the rule and counted these minutes. That means I made my 300 minutes for the week so now I've made the 300 minutes 2 weeks in a row.

I was wondering whether all the spinning I've been doing would make a difference in my running but I think the answer is that it really hasn't made much of a difference. On the other hand, maybe if I hadn't been doing the spinning I wouldn't have been able to run at all.

I hope you are both able to get out today and spin, run or hike. But even if you don't I hope Monday turns out to be a great day.

linda, a need either a nap or caffeine after reading that post. hope they have training on how to work with 4 hours sleep! holy smokes!

you're right sondra--good thing i was sitting down! but just remember it's for 30 minutes to make your time for the week, not to establish a new PR, ok?? i'm amazed at the amount of minutes you're doing.

no spinning or running last week--i had to try to make up some of the time i missed so i don't get too far behind. but my bag's in the car for tomorrow!

have a good monday!

Linda,

I think the people who make up your caseload are so lucky to have you. Most people would not be very good at doing what you do. I know for sure that I wouldn't be. And with all the changes that are taking place right now - or are supposed to be taking place - the people you will be dealing with will probably seriously need your help in navigating the system. It's too bad so much of the training had to be on-line but I'm sure the powers that be figured that on-line training was more cost effective. In the long run though what's important is that you will be providing a human touch for all the people you're assigned to help.

Switching gears, until today I was right on track for my second 300 minute week but I am not going to be able to do my Monday morning spin class because it would mean cutting things to close for a 10 o'clock conference call I absolutely need to do. That means I'll just need to figure out something else to do which - I hope you guys are sitting down as you read this - might just mean that tomorrow I might run for the first time since May. I might do that because early in the morning it has been a lot cooler the past few days plus I only need 30 more minutes so it really shouldn't be all that hard. So that's my thought for the moment but it may look very different tomorrow morning.

Cathy did you actually get to spin and running toward the end of last week? And how's your sister doing? Linda, what's happening with the veggies???

I hope both of you get a great start to the week.

I work for United Healthcare, who has a contract with NM Medicaid. I'm not a nurse, I'm a service coordinator, or care coordinator as we will be called after January 1st. During the last 4 1/2 years that I've worked here, we had a contract to work with the category of Medicaid members that was called Coordination of Long Term Services (CoLTS) program. It was aimed at helping those who are elderly and disabled have more coordination in their care instead of a lot of different agencies not knowing what anyone else was doing, and to help our members navigate the system. Help them get in-home care, work to get prescriptions or services they need from their doctors or other medical providers, help them get medical equipment, transportation to medical if needed, follow up with them after hospital stays and a lot of other things like that. Starting Jan 1st New Mexico Medicaid has revamped the entire system. Previously there were some managed care organizations who worked with families with kids, pregnant women, working disabled, etc but didn't do the in depth coordination of services. There were 4 mco's with what was called the Salud program (don't ask me why) Then there were 2 of us mco's (different than the ones with the Salud) who worked with the CoLTS program. And there was another mco that had an entirely different role, so there were 7 mco's all together who had contracts with Medicaid different services. The state has cut it down to 4 mco's, and all 4 of us will be dealing with all populations now. And there is changes in assessments, reporting, coordination, as well as new populations of Medicaid members. They are also hiring a lot more staff to help with this. We are also going to be using I think 3 new computer programs for different aspects of the job in addition to the 1 we currently use. The other programs will give us access to other things. Anyway, lots of changes coming and so lots of training. I don't travel out of our county a lot, but we have regional teams in the state and sometimes our team has a staff meeting in Las Cruces which is kind of the center of our area. But with all the new hires, including additional managers, the teams are going to be broken down geographically into more teams. Soon I will only be going to where our manager will be (met her on Thursday but she's still in training right now so not officially my manager yet) which is one hour away. But in our county there were 2 service coordinators for a long time, then a 3rd was hired. Now there are 5 more who are being trained for our county to handle the increased people we will be working with. Also it should cut our caseloads down (that's what they say anyway) to around 50 or so but we will be providing more in depth services and follow up. Currently I have 130 on my caseload. SOme need more, some need less. Anyway, we will see how it all works out.

obviously you don't have to answer this, but what do you do for a living? some type of nursing? it obviously requires lots of travel and LOTS of online learning! i'd much rather be in a class than online. i took a few classes that were online and i didn't really like it. i guess i miss the interaction in a real class.

ok, i'm watching HGTV. i don't know the name of this show, but a couple from minnesota is looking at property in alaska. they went fishing a few years ago and fell in love with fishing. really?? you would move for that?? they bought a small house which is completely isolated--accessible only by boat. and you have to keep a rifle with you all the time to scare off the bears. not for me.

have a good saturday ladies!

Hi ladies

There is a lot of training going on because of the huge changes that are coming to Medicaid here in New Mexico starting Jan 1st. Software is changing, how we do assessments is changing, what we will do with our members is changing, and they types of people we work with is also changing. Won't be just elderly and disabled anymore, but all categories of Medicaid including working disabled, kids, pregnant women, and bunch of other groups we didn't work with through our contract before. So there was 6 days of online training. Then yesterday a staff meeting for our regional part of the state team and to meet some of the new staff hired. They still have a lot more that have just been hired and were at orientation or are yet to be hired. Then there will be another 6 day training online beginning Oct 30th. So it's been intense because in addition to the training we still have to do our regular work.

Cathy so glad everything went okay so far, and hope that the chemo goes well too.

I've got to get ready to go out to do some home visits so have to keep this short.

everything went ok, thanks for asking. she starts chemo monday, so i think that's when the going gets really hard.

i think you can let up on yourself for not running with the exercise schedule you're sticking to. i'm really impressed. i've seen TRX on TV, but i've never actually seen anyone do it. it's supposed to be awesome exercise. i'm very curious to see how you like it. i wonder if they're going to get it at my Y. i'm going to ask.

i'm afraid to hope, but i think it's almost fall. it's been in the 60s every night this week and it was only about 81 today. october is my favorite month of the year. i love the way the light changes and how blue the sky gets. i'll be wanting warmer weather by january, but i'm sure enjoying the cooler weather now!

can't believe it's friday. since i was out of work monday and tuesday, so i'm totally off track.

have a good friday ladies!

Cathy, I hope everything went smoothly for your sister and that your life gets somewhat back to normal. Same for you Linda. All that on-line training would drive me around the bend for sure and even worse for you because you so enjoy being outside - and finding money! I added up your recent haul and it's just about a dollar. I don't think I have found that much all year.

I now have proof that having a plan to exercise at least 300 minutes a week makes a difference. Yesterday I had a schedule conflict and couldn't get to my Wednesday spin class, which meant 45 minutes that I couldn't do. So I actually dragged myself down to the Y at 3:30 in the afternoon and did 10 minutes of rowing and 35 minutes of walking on the treadmill. I definitely would NOT have done that if I didn't have that 300 minute plan. I would just have blown it off and had 45 less minutes for the week.

We have another new development at the Y - TRX training. You use what look like resistance bands that hang from the ceiling to do various exercises like push ups and pull ups and all kinds of other moves. It was really hard for me to picture it so I looked it up on Spark People and found a very good video from the TRX website that shows exactly what it looks like. Anyway, it's supposed to be terrific exercise for every muscle you can think of and I am going to try it starting in about 2 weeks. I'm really looking forward to it because it's always fun to have a new challenge.

It's getting cooler here too. It was 68 degrees at about 8 this morning, which is a real change and very welcome. But now I don't have my hot weather excuse for not running so we'll see whether I can manage to get back on the running track - no pun intended. At least I don't feel so guilty knowing that Linda is also finding it hard to get back to running.

I hope things are back to normal for both of you and that you are able to work on your goals/plans.

good things we make up our own rules as we go, isn't it? :-)

i did find a penny at publix tonite--nothing like what linda hauls in, but that's ok.

when is your training going to over? it's been going on for a while hasn't it? that can get so boring.

it was "cold" here today--55 this morning, but i think it was in the high 80s. but the humidity was low, so that helped a lot.

gotta go--have a good wednesday ladies!

Cathy you have a lot of legitimate things getting in your way. Very understandable. We have to be flexible sometimes because of life's things we get thrown. Hope all goes well with your sister's procedure.

I'm on an all day training today. Did get out and walk early. Weather here has been cold in the mornings, upper 30's, lower 40's. But days are nice in the 70's;

Better get back to paying attention to training I guess. sigh :(

wow--300 fitness minutes in a week and enough change to go to Macy's! you two are doing great!

fun day for me--i had a colonoscopy, so yesterday and today were out and tomorrow i'm taking my sister to have her mediport put in and then chemo class in the afternoon. i might be able to run when i get home, but i think it will be too late. but--these are the last 2 big things holding me up from my plan and i plan to go spinning wednesday and friday and running thursday. the weather here got beautiful last night after Karen went on her way and the cold front came through. beautiful blue sky, nice breeze, relatively cool--it's wonderful! i've been whining for it to cool off so i could run, so i guess i gotta put my shoes where my whining was, right?

i hope you have a good tuesday!

Hi ladies!

I'm on another day of online training and trying to stay focused but during dull or periods when others are reading and I'm waiting I'm trying to catch up on e-mail. So I'm bouncing back and forth between 2 computers.

I have done better at the veggies, although not 100% I still have not done the running. I really need to get on track this week.

I'm on a roll finding money again the last few days. SOme days I don't find anything for a few days, some days just a penny or two. Then some days I strike it rich. The other day I found 2 quarters and 3 pennies while out walking. Yesterday I found 3 dimes and 4 pennies, not all at the same spot. Today I found a dime. So it varies a lot. Love those good days LOL!

Sounds like you ladies did pretty well. Sondra sounds like that class was pretty intense! But I know you can do it. Cathy you can too. And I can too if I put my mind to it.

Better get back to this class I guess. Have a great day!

I'm really glad that we all have plans and goals! It's much easier for me to stick to my plan when I know that both of you are also working on plans. Today marks the end of week 1 and I am pleased to report that I have managed to do 300 fitness minutes. Not a minute more, but the goal was at least 300 minutes so I am declaring week 1 a success.

Friday was my first rowing class. It turned out that there were only 2 people in the class but the other person is a woman who is also in my core class, very nice and in really great shape so keeping up with her is a challenge. First we worked on technique - which is not as simple as you might think - and then we did about 5 repetitions of a circuit of 2 minutes rowing, 20 squats, 10 push-ups and a 30 second plank. Youch!! That was quite a workout. So far I like it but I can see that it will take a lot of work to really master the rhythm of it and to be able to continue rowing for half an hour.

Cathy, I really understand what you're saying about working hard in spin class. My quads are still tired from a spin class that ended an hour ago. And it's really a mental challenge too because it's only as hard as you make it but if you don't make it hard enough you really don't gain much. I guess running is really the same but so far I'm just not willing to push myself that hard in running.

Linda, I really sympathize with you on eating more fruits and vegetables. It's always so hard for me to get enough servings per day. I kind of cheat with V8! Actually I like a lot of vegetables but it's hard to fit them in when most of my attention is on the main course. So I try to have at least one meatless main course a week. Fruit is another story because there are not very many fruits I really like. Are you better at fruits or vegetables? And did you get in your 2 runs this week?

I'm looking forward to hearing how both of you did on week 1!

sounds like sondra had an awesome day and linda had an extremely boring day. some of those team-building things are good, but it sounds like most of your work is done independently, so maybe some of that is irrelevant. gotta do it tho i guess.

sondra, that's a great compliment from your instructor! makes it all worthwhile doesn't it? or at least most of it :-)

i'm still on track for the week, so that's a huge accomplishment for me. 13.2 miles today at spinning. and i actually enjoyed the class. i just kind of decided that i'm going to push as hard as i can without getting so short of breath i'm miserable or my legs get so shaky i can't even stand up to pedal. but i'm increasing the tension as i can and riding as fast as i can when that's part of the class. so all in all, i think i'm moving forward.

so right now i guess my goals are to keep my streak going and to try to really pay attention to what i eat and my "chew speed"! i'll have to see how it goes, but those seem pretty do-able for now.

i hope you both have a good thursday!

Cathy

Cathy I'm so sorry your sister, and all of the family because it affects all of you, have to go through this. I've also heard chemo is easier than it used to be. And there are so many breast cancer survivors now. I hope all goes easy for her with great outcomes. And great job on your streak!

Sondra I hope you can walk again soon LOL. Does not sound like a class I would find fun. But so neat about the compliment! Interesting about working on your chewing. I know I should probably do that too.

I'm still trying to figure out my plan. Not really in the mood to set goals but I know I really need to do it. My eating has been crazy. I keep trying to track my food and stay within a healthy range, but I keep failing in the afternoon or evenings. But I'm going to keep working on it. Eating cottage cheese and celery right now. I like both. I need to work on getting more veggies in. So I guess that will be at least part of my goal, to get 3 to 4 servings of veggies in a day. I really want to start running again. This is a good time of year to do it. So I think I'll shoot for running twice a week. I'm not going to commit to 3 times. Maybe I'll do it that much but my goal will be twice a week.

Okay, so veggies and running are my goals

First they told us we had to attend the whole 8 hours of training for 7 days.. Then they said that current staff only have to attend part of it. Yesterday was 8 to 12. Today is 1 to 5. I think tomorrow is 8 to 2. Can't remember the rest of the schedule at the moment but will check it daily on my work computer. I know that next Tuesday, the last day of the current session, is an all day thing. Then next Thursday I have to drive 2 hours each way for a staff meeting of our team, which is a lot of the southern part of the state. The online training is for the whole state. Then a little later we have to do another 6 day training that will be all day. A lot of it is because of major changes to New Mexico's Medicaid starting January 1st,, and what our new contract with them will entail. Going to be a lot of changes. The current contract is for elderly and disabled mostly, but the new contract includes a lot of other Medicaid groups we will also be handling, including low income families, children's Medicaid, pregnant women, developmentally delayed, and other categories. They are hiring a lot more staff right now and also starting to train current ones because not only are the groups changing, but what we will be required to do with the people assigned to us and a lot of other things It's supposed to help with cost containment, make it more user friendly for people on Medicaid to access services, get them better care, etc. We'll see how that works out. Everytime I hear something is supposed to make it easier it usually gets more complicated! Especially if government is involved LOL. They say it's going to be easier for us to do our jobs too but I'll believe that when I see it. Because so many of us work from home with our caseload, part of the training yesterday was on being part of a virtual team. This particular session, (there are several different weeks this training is scheduled because of the large number of people who have to take it) had 87 people in it. One exercise to build virtual team strategy or something was to have us draw a picture of a football game. There was a whiteboard on the computer screen webpage and all of us, at one time, were supposed to work together to draw the football game on that screen. Different people would say they would draw different items, etc. Picture a class of 87 kids before a blackboard in a classroom trying to work together to draw a picture. That's what it felt like to me. The ending picture looked a lot like that too, since the online drawing tool weren't real easy to control so it looked like kids drew it. There was so much chaos during that I just was on my personal computer at the same time reading e-mail while they did it. No one even noticed I wasn't doing anything with that many people all drawing at once. I've just never got the purpose of some of these team building exercises. Some are okay, or even good, but some just don't fit my personality at all LOL.
So, no telling what we are in for this afternoon!

Well I'd better get some other work that needs to be done accomplished before I have to get on the training. Have a great day!

Linda

I just got out of Melissa's spin class and I can scarcely walk! She decided that today was the day to make class extra hard and she succeeded. I'm happy to have survived but boy it was a struggle. Melissa is also teaching the rowing class so I have that to look forward to on Friday.

Cathy as of your last post you were really doing great so you need to stop kicking yourself!!! Where are you on developing your plan? :Let us know.

Interesting about eating fast. I do too and it's really hard to break the habit. I once tried counting how many times I chewed each bite, trying to chew for 20 counts, and I couldn't stand it. I actually got bored!!

Linda, I understand how bummed you are with your on-line training since it keeps you indoors all day. Have you had a chance to think about goals and a plan???

I feel like I'm doing pretty well on my 300 fitness minutes per week. I'm at 145 on Wednesday and I have core, strength training and rowing coming up so all I should need to do is about an hour walking on Saturday and I'll reach 300.

One more thing: forgive me for bragging but yesterday Amy, who teaches core, said that the difference between where I was when I started the class in June and where I am now was "night and day"! That makes me feel great and it makes the hard work worth it.

Hope you both are doing well and have a great hump day.

no,this isn't my "walking sister". and thanks for the encouragement. she has a very positive attitude, so i'm hoping once chemo starts she'll be able to hold on. people say chemo's not near the nightmare it used to be, so we're holding on to that.

i'm doing better with the exercise. i went running thursday and spinning friday and went back to spinnning again today--even after my workout buddy ditched me!! so that's a 3-day streak for me--pathetic to say, but it's the longest streak i've achieved in a long time. :-(

i'll be working on the rest of my plan. i am starting to be aware of how fast i eat, and it really needs work. i had no idea how fast i ate until i started paying attention. i think part of it from 10 years of half-hour lunch breaks and we learned to eat fast.

i have my bag with my running stuff in the car, so that's my plan for tomorrow.

have a good day ladies!

Cathy, first of all, I'm so sorry to hear about your sister. I hope she has an easy time with the chemo and makes a full recovery as lots and lots of people do these days. Is she the sister you trained with for the speed-walking across the bridges?

Something like that can certainly throw your whole life off kilter so don't be too hard on yourself. You are absolutely right about using exercise to relieve stress. It really does work. So I am very glad you're in for achieving the goals and following the plan. And yes, the plan starts October 1 and ends on New Year's eve.

Linda, now we need to get you on your plan. How about setting a calorie limit and tracking your food for the three-month period? Or keeping a food journal and recording what and when you "problem eat"? For a while after I quit smoking I replaced cigarettes with food so I understand how that "problem eating" happens. Anyway, think about what you would like to do because it will be much more fun - and support - if all three of us our own goal and plan.

Now I'm off the the Y with my halo shining brightly! Hope both of you have a great Monday.

i can't imagine walking a marathon, much less running one. awesome!

i volunteered to hand out registration packets for an annual 5K run on saturday. it's a timed run, so i didn't want to do it, but what an eye-opener. it was probably some of the marines that finished first, but they ran/sprinted it in about 16 or 17 minutes. that cemented my decision that i didn't want to do timed runs!!

sondra, i'm in on your challenge. i've just to figure out a plan. my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of weeks ago. she gets the mediport put in next week and then starts chemo the week after, so i've been really fragmented these past 2 weeks and probably will be for awhile. i did go running thursday and spinning friday. i know it helps my stress, so i need to keep doing it. i'd like to re-lose 4 pounds too. so those would be my goals--just gotta get the plan. is our finish date new year's eve or can i make that my finish date?

it sounds like you've got a good plan, with not wasting time on something you don't like and leaving running out of your minutes too. i'm guessing linda's 10,000 minutes of walking a week will be her plan! :-)

linda, i found 2 pennies today and 2 last weekend, so i'm getting ahead of you...

have a good monday and here's to us and our plan!

Sounds like a great plan Sondra! My problem is I'm better with the exercise and not good with the eating the last several months. I do good until late afternoon, then fatigue and stress that have accumulated all day get to me and I eat not so good. I really want to get back on track. A lot of my fitness minutes is walking, as I usually do 4 to 6 miles each morning and have gotten in the habit of leaving the house between 5:30 and 5:45 am (in the dark) in order to make sure I get it done. Then I come home and help get the grandkids to school and start working. Evenings I'm tired, so if I don't do it early it often won't get done. I do try to do strength training either at home or in water aerobics on Tuesday or Thursday at noon. But some days I can't fit the noon classes into my schedule. But I also have 5 and 10 lb weights at home and try to do my own workout twice a week. Some days I don't get it in though. But I'm not doing too bad. I think it is so important to do what you enjoy. I'm glad you are making that part of your plan. Zumba look like fun but I am such a klutz when I've tried it before and the classes were so packed. I've thought about trying the water zumba class my gym has once a week but not sure how packed that class is. That sounds interesting.

Cathy - pulling weeds is definitely exercise! I don't have a garden, just a backyard and an empty lot next door that is part of the property I rent and the weeds have grown like crazy because of the rains. And the city will give out fines if they aren't kept cut. I did my backyard a little over a week ago, and tackled the empty lot yesterday. Some I cut with the weed cutter but some I had to pull because their stems were too thick. The ground was soft because of the rains. It would have been better if I could have just pulled them but we are talking about a TON of weeds. No way I could pull all of those. Too hard on my back and would take me a week or so anyway. I did rake up some of them, but not all. Spent 3 hours on it yesterday and felt I could hardly walk afterwards. My lower back and hips got to me. Didn't help that I did a 6 mile walk early in the morning before this project LOL. My back yard,, when I did it, is much smaller than that lot, about 1/3 of the size of what I did. The lot next door also goes back a little further toward the property in back than the lot the house is on, and about 2/3rs are level with my yard and another 1/3 drops down somewhat downhill. Can't see that area from the street the house faces, but can around the corner from the street looking through someone else's yard. I didn't get to that back 1/3.

It definitely feels like fall today! Temps this morning were 43 degrees when I went out for a shorter walk this morning about 6 am. I'm thinking of doing a little hiking today.

By the way Cathy, I never did run the second day I said I was going to. So I had a one day streak. Really need to commit myself to this.

I have a friend named Lynda that I met here on SP a couple of years ago. Her SP name is Lyndaloves2hike. She lives in California, and we started talking on here an became good friends. She came out here to visit me a year ago Memorial Day weekend, and then we met later in the summer in a camp ground for a few days in Arizona by a lake. Her husband Tom was with us that time. They are both a little older than me, in their mid 60's. But very active and Tom loves to run. Lynda prefers hiking and Tom does some hiking too, but she does more. Tom qualified to run in the Berlin marathon this year, which is today. They've been in Europe for a few weeks, visiting different places while working their way toward Berlin for this marathon. She said he cracked a few ribs about 4 weeks ago, which affected his training. But she's been posting updates on FB during his run today and he's doing okay. 40,000+ runners in it. I saw a separate news feed, not from her, that said the winner of the men finished the marathon already in 2 hours 3 minutes and set a new world record. Of course the runner was from Kenya LOL. They always produce such fast runners! Anyway, I'm usually only on FB once a day, and sometimes I don't even get on that much. BUt right now I'm checking in frequently to see if Lynda posts any more on how Tom's doing. I just can't imagine running 26.2 miles, although I can possibly see walking that much, since I've already done 20 miles walking. But also, having done that far walking, I know how hard that was which makes running it seem even more amazing that people can do that!

Well it's starting to warm up a little more and I think I'm going to get ready to head out for a hike somewhere, even if it's not a long one since my hips and lower back are still sore from yesterday. But it's too pretty to stay inside.

Have a great day everyone!

Right after I finished this I checked FB again an Tom had finished the marathon. She didn't give his time but had a picture of him with his finisher's medal and he looked good.

First of all Cathy, pulling weeds is definitely exercise - just ask Linda about that! Unfortunately I cannot add weed pulling to my fitness plan because I am just not a gardener at all. Therefore, I really have the bare minimum of plants and my brother-in-law takes care of them.

I have been giving a lot of thought to setting goals because my motivation has been really low this month. For the first time in a very long time I won't have even 1,000 fitness minutes for September. So clearly I need a new plan and I'm hoping that it might inspire the two of you to develop your own plans or a version of mine.

First I thought about my goals. I decided that I have two goals - to be strong and fit and to maintain my weight. To achieve those goals I need to watch what I eat and I need to get enough exercise. I'm pretty good about watching what I eat but I've been coming up short on the exercise. So my plan is to get a minimum of 1,200 fitness minutes a month (300 minutes per week). Linda, I know this is about a third of what you do but for me this is a bit of a stretch but achievable.

The key to my plan -- drum roll please, because this is my big "aha" -- I will achieve the 300 minutes a week doing only things I really enjoy. For me that's the big key because if I don't like it I won't do it. That means I am dumping Zumba because I feel like such a clutz in that class that I don't like to go. I am keeping spinning, core, strength training, walking and my new rowing class.

Another part of the plan is that any minutes I spend running will NOT count toward the 300 minutes. That's important because for me to get back to running I need to feel absolutely no pressure to run. So not only will I not worry about my time but I also won't worry that if I don't run I won't make my 300 minutes. I think that's the only way that I will get back to running.

The plan goes into effect on October 1 and, of course, I'll let you know how it goes. I would be really really happy if you would both join me either in my plan or in one that is better suited to you so please let me know whether you are in!

Hi, Kristie! i'm impressed with your fitness minutes. i think i have about 57 for the month! but sondra is proposing a challenge, so i'm hoping that will change.

linda, day 2 of your streak--2 days more than mine this week. i gotta get back on track. i know it's not exercise, but i spent about an hour outside after work tonite pulling weeds and messing with my plants. it was comfortable and sunny and breezy and wonderful to be outside doing something mindless.

and i somehow got myself volunteered to work a run this weekend, so that should be interesting. we start at 5:45. good thing i'm used to getting up that early.

have a good thursday ladies!

Hi Kristie and welcome to our little group. Sometimes life throws us curve balls that mess up our plans. Hope your husband is doing better. I've heard shingles is so painful!

I'm going to head out in a few minutes to walk to the track to do my second day of running in this streak I'm trying to get started. Hope you all have a great day!

It seems like these last couple of weeks have been hard on finding time to workout. My grand daughter started with us again for a bit and my husband was diagnosed with shingles. I'm reading to get back into moving.

The possibilities always outnumber the problems.

Congratulations to both of you on finding money! I have gotten so in the habit of looking at the ground and floors it's become an obsession LOL. Always happy when I find at least a penny. This month I've found some, but not as much as last month. Or maybe all the mud and water around here is covering them up LOL.

I did 1.28 miles of walking/running this morning. 45 sec run/1 min walk as I try to build back up again. 8 repeats of it. I have a ways to go and I was definitely not fast but it's a start.

Thanks both of you for the comments on my walk. I really enjoy doing those kinds of things. Well, in the middle of it I may be wishing it was over but when it's done I feel so good about it. It really is so nice walking in the night. Too bad I can't do that more often. I do walk some in the dark in the early morning when I go walking in town, since the days have gotten shorter. With my little flashlight of course. But I really enjoyed being out away from traffic and other things but not brave enough to go walking out in the dark alone in deserted areas. I do a lot of things people think I'm crazy for doing, like hiking alone (it's amazing how many women I run into on trails also out hiking alone) but I'm not quite that crazy! I've heard of people doing night hikes and that sounds so cool but not going to do it by myself. There is a peak, just outside of the city limits in the forest, that isn't too high and takes me about 45 minutes to climb. I think it would be awesome to climb up there and watch the sun come up. You can see for a long ways from it in the daylight and nothing blocks the view. It has a very small area at the top of it, not like some mountain peaks. There is a group of monks that live out in that direction that I've heard go up there but I'm not sure how often they do it. They have a sunrise service I think up there. They have a big circle of rocks and a smaller ring for a fire pit. I don't want to run into them or interrupt them either. But in any case, like I said I'm not brave enough to go climb up there in the dark. But it's a nice thought.

Well, better get back to work. Have a great day everyone!

Linda

Walking 20 miles truly is awesome!! Tripping over the sidewalk in broad daylight is more like something I would do. My biggest accomplishment in weeks was finding a bright shiny dime on the street when I walked on Saturday. I was so thrilled!! This year has been a record low for me for coins so even though it is not much by comparison with what you two have been doing for me that dime was huge.

I have signed up for the rowing class that starts in October and I'm really looking forward to trying it. Rowing is supposed to be a great all-in-one workout - strength training and cardio all at the same time. I'll let you know more once I actually do it.

Unfortunately, the rowing class conflicts with Zumba so I'm giving up Zumba for the moment but they'll probably be relieved not to have me and my three left feet in the class.

So Linda, are you going to run that Turkey Trot 5k? I am thinking about the Jingle Bell run because it's just a fun run that maybe I can do without obsessing over my time but I haven't made up my mind yet. I think I'll do it if the Y puts together a team again but I don't think I want to just do it on my own.

Cathy, are you still running and spinning and doing Chalean?

How do you guys feel about setting some goals for the rest of the year???

Hope your week gets off to a great start today.

wow--i just read your blog and that sounds awesome! i can't imagine walking 20 miles. it's been a long time, but aren't the sounds and sights of the night awesome? the city i live in isn't very big, but it still cuts out some of the stars and moonlight.

you sound like me--i've tripped over a curb at lunchtime when i was running with a friend, almost in front of our office. i was so embarrassed until the pain hit. my friend and i joke about it, but it sure was embarrassing when it happened!

i was going to post this the other day but i ran out of time. i think i've finally beaten you linda at the money-finding. i had my annual GYN appointment friday and found 2 pennies in the parking lot. then i had to go to target and found 2 pennies in that parking lot. i found what i thought was a penny next to the checkout, but it was a dime. that's almost a record for me, i think! although, i guess you do get extra credit for finding a penny out in the middle of nowhere! :-)

have a good monday ladies!

Sondra hope by now you knee is much much better!

Cathy sorry about the food poisoning! Yuck! I think rowing would be great too. As much rain as we've had this year, which has lasted way longer than usual, and the flooding we've had I may need to get a rowboat soon! So many places near me have had flash flooding. I've never seen a year like this. Cathy, I finally got around to posting a blog today on how the walk went, which was really good. Sondra's already read it.

I'm really thinking now of getting back to running more to train for the Turkey Trot 5k near here on Thanksgiving. I missed it last year but did it for the 3 years before that. The first year was walking, and that was what first got me turned on to wearing a race bib for the first time in my life. I'm thinking I would like to do it again. I want to do some running, but I no longer have the desire to run longer distances. I really like the endurance walks, like this one was and the Bataan Death March Memorial event every year in March. I want to work more on walking longer distances. Many mornings I do 3 to 5 miles early in the morning walking, but want to be able to get up to longer distances. Even though I did almost 20 miles in the Walk for the Heroes, I want to train and be more ready. I did take a few ride breaks before I quit completely and rode the rest of the way, but I really want to be more prepared next year. But for this year I'm really happy with what I was able to do.

I've been so busy I don't get time to check in sometimes. By evening I'm too tired and I run out of time in the mornings. I don't even get on my facebook page for 2 or 3 days at a time. I definitely am not one that checks in multiple times a day there LOL. I just have a few friends and not a big fb person, but there are a few people I like to keep in touch with through there.

It's very cloudy and thundering and looks like rain any minute. Hopefully not more flash flooding somewhere around here again!

I found a quarter out walking today. Most I've found in several weeks. Oh and when walking down the highway in the Walk for the Heroes I did find one penny along the highway LOL. In the middle of nowhere! Well not exactly nowhere but not a stretch of road that gets walkers much because there is nothing except one rest area in the 37 miles stretch. So not where you'd really expect to find money unless someone threw it out a window LOL!

Hope you guys have a great week!

Linda

well, i think i gave myself a relatively mild case of food poisoning last night, so running was definitely out. i'm planning to go spinning tomorrow tho.

i think rowing would be awesome! from what i understand, it's almost a total body workout because you use your legs, core, arms. and what fun it would be with a team! go for it.

glad your knee's feeling better. and your weightlifting sounds challenging. i'm thinking that's more than i can do.

i guess linda's off for her big adventure. wouldn't it be nice to have that many different climates/terrains all in one place? :-)

have a good friday--

I am happy - and grateful - to report that the knee is better. I did take Aleve the first day but I try to do without meds if I can so it really has to hurt for me to take something. I'm still being careful but I'm going to try Zumba tomorrow. I always stand way in the back so if it isn't working I can just slip out quietly. Then on Saturday I will try to walk.

Cathy, I am so impressed that you are running during the summer. I just couldn't do it this summer. But now in the mornings I can feel the slightest little bit of cool air early in the morning so running weather will be here soon.

Even if I haven't been running I have been working hard at the Y this summer. I'm doing a lot better in spin class and core and today for the first time I was able to do 3 sets of 15 reps bench pressing 45 pounds. Next step is to add a little weight and work up to 3 sets of 15 at 50 pounds.

Also, the Y just got a bunch of rowing machines and I'm trying to master the rhythm, which is kind of strange. Have either of you ever either used a rowing machine or done actual rowing?

Rowing - the real kind, in a racing scull - is becoming a very big thing around here because a rowing facility in Sarasota/Manatee counties was just chosen to host the worldwide rowing championship in 2017. They're going to start teaching real rowing at the Y and some of my friends and I are even talking about forming a 4-person rowing team. I think it would be a hoot.

So Cathy, let us know whether you made it out to run today and maintained your streak and Linda best of luck on your walk tomorrow.

my streak is temporarily busted for today. i had to work until it was too late to go to the Y, since it's a class and i have to be there at starting time. but i exchanged my stuff out for runnning stuff for tomorrow, so i'm planning on it being day 3!

that run sounds really cool linda. lots of work must go into that. we don't have things like that here. good luck with it!

sondra, hope your knee heals quickly. can you walk instead of running even for a short distance or is that not a good idea? are you taking ibuprofen or aleve for it?

have a good thursday ladies--it's almost the weekend!

Linda, I will be thinking of you Friday night and Saturday and doing my best to beam positive energy in your direction. It sounds like a great event. I live in a small town too and I love being part of events here. It's so different from taking part in big city events that involve thousands and thousands of strangers and are organized in an impersonal and bureaucratic way. It's so much more meaningful when it's done on a smaller scale and you can feel that you are personally involved. And you really couldn't be helping a more worthy cause.

I'm looking forward to hearing all about it when it's over.

My running plans are on hold for the moment because I did something to my knee! I have absolutely no idea what I did or when I did it. I just know that it's sore and that it hurts when I straighten my leg so no streak happening here. Cathy, how's your streak going??

Linda, I hope the walk is a great success and I hope all of us have a great Thursday.

Sonra woohoo on the coin and the rainbow! That's awesome!

Cathy congratulations on day 2! That's more than I' ve one LOL. I thought about trying to run again yesterday or today, but decided I'd really better wait until next week sometimes. It's so close to this long walk, regardless of how much of it I do, because I will push myself to go as far as I can. We may end up doing some of the walking in the rain! I am taking stuff to be prepared, like an umbrella, rain jacket, and few pairs of dry socks LOL. They are going to have reflective vest for us to wear especially during the night and it was suggested we each get some glow sticks to take. Those are cheap and will last an hour or two, so if we take several it will get us from 11 pm to daylight. The road won't be closed and it's a highway so we want to make sure cars can see us. There are several police depts. involved to, and the state police is going to put up "Walkers Ahead" signs along the road and cruise it frequently. The sheriff's dept will also be doing that during the night too, when will still be in our county. The town we are going to is in the next county but by the time we reach them it will be daylight. They are supporting us too. And because our whole area is rural around this part of the state (actually in many parts of the state) our public bus system covers both areas, and are going to supply a bus and driver to shuttle us back from Deming to Hurley where many of us will have left our cars. There is a few cars that will be following, and an RV also in case anyone needs to stop and rest they can ride in the RV. They are also doing what they have done in the past when there were only a handful of walkers about the portapotties. They have two of them donated on a small trailer they use with the potties firmly tied down to them and someone will be driving a truck pulling the little trailer with frequent stops or as needed. I went to one of the organizational meetings last night. We have decided to do what one of the guys said they did when he was in Marine bootcamp (he's a vet) and walk 50 minutes and rest 10 all the way. That way those that are walking all or a lot of it (like I hope to do) don't rest so long they stiffen up and hopfully stopping after 50 minutes will help from pushing too hard. They are also going to have Gatorade, water, fresh fruit, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and protein bars, much of which has been donated. There isn't a charge for this event but we are encouraged to buy a t-shirt for $20 to help support it. They've also had cash donations. Whatever is left over will go to help our local Toys for Tots that Marines do every year and toward establishing a scholarship in memory of a soldier whose mother lives here who was killed in Afghanistan in 2003. They are hoping it will grow every year and as it does more funds will be generated. Also on Saturday morning in conjunction with this is a motorcyclist's ride and they have a small entrance feel. Biker rides are big around here. There is a guy who will be cooking hamburgers and hot dogs for us back at our starting point, so he will have everything ready and will be called when we are getting in to Deming because it is about a 30 minute drive back to Hurley. The bus will be on standby to be called when we are almost to Deming so they can meet us there and we don't have to wait a long time for it. That is free too. Next year I really want to be involved in it from the very beginning and help with the organizing.

Well I've got to get back to work. I posted a blog with a little information and a link to a newspaper article in todays paper that has a lot more information on the history of this walk, that started with just one man doing it alone, and then in 2010 there were 4 of them who did it. This year is the first year it's really been publicized and the Marine League also got involved and that's really helped make people aware of it. If you get a chance, click the link to the article in my blog because I think it is very interesting how it started and everything.

woohoo! money and a rainbow--what a deal!

i'm into DAY 2 of my de-slumping--how pathetic is that?? i went running at lunch. the heat index was 94 when i left and 97 when i came back and i got too hot. it was miserable. i keep telling myself that since labor day's over it's going to get cooler, but i think i'm kidding myself for several more weeks. :-(

my kitchen does look great, but i should have stuck to spinning--not nearly as expensive!! i'm still waiting on new cabinet doors, but that will be a few more weeks and then it will be done.

i like your plan about the rookie running program, so you won't stress yourself as much as i think you usually do. i think you're probably still more in shape than you think. and if not--hey, that what those programs are designed to do.

gotta go--have a good wednesday ladies. glad your computer is back up sondra!

It sounds like both of you are moving ahead!

Linda, I can't believe the weather in New Mexico! First you have droughts and wildfires and then you have pouring down rains and cold. I think you have to be very tough to live there - and to take part in 38 mile walks, even if you don't walk all 38 miles.

I really hear you about being afraid you won't be able to run any more. I have the same problem. And I keep telling myself that I've done it before and I can do it again. That's my mantra. Pretty soon it's going to be cool enough to run here and I will find out whether I can do it or not. As I said before, I'm just going to start over with the Rookie Running Program.

Cathy, you may not have worked out at the gym but your remodeling work was certainly exercise - plus you probably have a beautiful bathroom and kitchen now, which is a lot more than you can say for any exercise class.

I was having a lot of computer problems and last week had just written a great post to the two of you when it just vanished before I could send it. I now have a different web browser and - knocking wood - I think that has solved the problem. I've forgotten most of what I wrote but one thing I do remember and want to tell you: I FINALLY found a coin!! It was a nickel and it was on the sidewalk at Publix. I think I had gone for 6 months without any coins so this was huge. Oh, and earlier that day I saw a rainbow! So two good omens which I am happy to share with the the two of you.

Onward and upward for a great Tuesday.

good timing linda--i'm on a roll! one whole day of de-slumping!! i've been mondo stressed over renovation snags in my kitchen and haven't done anything in a month--even knowing that spinning or running would relieve some stress. but the major part of it was done saturday so i decided i'm going to get back at it. and my Y friend even bagged me today! it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be--i can still stand up and pedal but my legs were hurting an hour after class. pathetic. but--day 1!

it was a comfortable morning here too--only 74 at 5:30! i can't wait for fall weather. winter i can do without, but i love fall.

good luck on the walk--hope your weather holds.

have a good tuesday! and sondra too!

Good morning ladies,

Some days I get behind and just don't get enough time to do all I want to including my computer time. Thought I should check in and let you all know I'm still around.

Thursday I got hit with some kind of stomach bug and was sick Thursday and Friday. Saturday I felt better, then yesterday draggy and tummy a little upset. This morning I feel good and hope it stays that way. I'm tired of the bug. Went out and did a 4 mile walk this morning. It's getting chillier in the early mornings. It was 57 this morning. Definitely light jacket weather. And I start when it's still dark, and as the sun actually starts to rise it gets colder until the sun gets fully up and starts warming.

The Walk for the Heroes is this Friday night and Saturday during the day. Starts at 11 pm. I'm hoping to get a nap right after work until I have to get ready to go. It's about 25 minutes from where I live where the starting point is. Hopefully the company on the walk from others will keep us all moving and awake LOL. And that it doesn't rain during the walk. We are still having some summer rains although they are not as often or as heavy. There is supposed to be a storm this evening and tomorrow. Flash flood warning until tomorrow evening. Highs are in the 70's all week, which I love. I checked the weather forecast and it calls for 30% chance of showers Friday but never can tell for sure. It changes all the time. But I will take my umbrella and a rain jacket in the light backpack I'm going to take and if it rains we will walk anyway. I don't mind the rain just hope it's not one of the really heavy rains we get sometimes and hope there is no thunder and lightening. No buildings along the way to duck into. There will be some cars following but I don't know how many walkers or how many cars. But I'm just going to trust that it's going to all work out.

Hope you are both doing okay. I hadn't ran in a while. On my way back home, after I had already walked a little over 3 miles, I decided to run for a little bit. No intervals or timers or distance for the run. It wasn't far, less than 1/2 mile for the time I ran, but I keep thinking about running again and it's a start. I seem to have a mental block telling me it's too hard and I can't do it, but I've got to shut that voice up. I did it before, I can do it again.

Have a great day!

Linda

you're back! lord, i thought i was busy some days, but i'm a slug compared to you! glad you're healing from your fall. i hurt my hand pretty bad a couple years ago when i fell, and it makes you more cautious.

that walk sounds very interesting/challenging. i guess some people will walk the whole way, but that would be way too much for me.

hopefully, all 3 of us are back on track, so here's to a good thursday!

Hi ladies!

Sorry I haven't posted here recently. I stopped getting notifications again when one of you post and I forget to check the board. Sometimes I don't get much chance to catch up lately it seems. Sondra, I had sprained my wrist when I tripped over a weed out walking. I hardly ever have a fall when I'm hiking. I can't remember when I last did. Maybe it's because I'm more cautious out hiking than when walking. I was walking on the side of the road in town on a block where there wasn't a sidewalk. I could have walked on the edge of the street because there wasn't that much traffic. But the weeds were cut and I was just walking along fairly quickly and down I went. Sprained my wrist and my middle finger on my right hand. But they are all healed now. So now if I go on that street I walk on the edge of the street LOL. I'm just a klutz sometimes LOL. I try to be careful at my age about falling, but once in a while it happens.

Cathy I definitely think that remodeling counts as exercise! In the tracker for exercise there is even some things for things like yardwork, housework, moving, and possibly painting. Those type of things really do give your muscles a workout!

Thank you guys for the support you've given me. Thankfully my younger daughter is able to help some, especially in the evenings when I am really tired. And the kids are super easy to get up and get ready for school, and are always ready way before time to go, so I find it works best to help them with their spelling words, homework, and reading before they go to school. We are all much fresher then. My 13 year old grandson Elijah has always been really hard to get up in the mornings, but he is staying with his dad right now a few hours away. His dad has never been a big part of his life but this summer he wanted to take him for the summer, and then Elijah decided he wanted to stay for the school year. He is my younger daughter's son. So he isn't here right now. My 14 year old granddaughter is better this year about getting up and she gets up really early because it takes her forever to do her hair and put on her makeup. She sets her own alarm. So the two 10-year olds and the 8 year old I help in the morning. The two 10 year olds are cousins, and in the same classroom so it's not that hard since they have the same assignments. I go walking really early then come home and get them up. Even though one of the 10-year olds has her mom here, we kind of have an arrangement where I do the mornings and she takes care of dinner and helps in the evenings. She's the one with a lot of health problems and sometimes seizures.

There is a 38-mile Walk For the Heroes here to remember the heroes of 9/11 and also all military heroes past and present. They've had it before but it's been really small and not well publicized and I didn't really know anything about it. This year they have a new organizer and also the Marine League here has gotten involved and so they expect a lot more people. It's going to start at 11 pm on Friday 9/13 (yes 11 at night) and walk from one small community here to another town 38 miles away. You don't have to do the whole 38 miles (I know I won't be LOL). They will have volunteers in support cars following the walking group and when you get tired you can get a ride back to your car if you want to leave or can hang out in the vehicle and get out again later and walk or just ride to the end if you want to. They are encouraging the group to kind of walk together. It's not a race. I'm looking forward to that, and looking forward to walking at night when it's cool. It is expected to be around 2 pm the on Saturday afternoon when they get to the destination. I'll walk what I can, see how I feel, and may ride for a while and get out to walk at the end. There is also a commemorative motorcycle ride on Saturday which will go a few places and in the afternoon end up where the walkers are finishing. Motorcycle rides for different causes are popular around here.
Anyway, I'll try not to disappear so long again! Thanks again for all your support!

Linda

i think i'm going to use lots of calories cleaning after this weekend when the stuff is all finished. i have dust all over my house--even in the back bedrooms. i've used up a big box of swiffers and i'll probably use the whole new one too. it's amazing what a mess dust makes.

i read linda's blog. that breaks my heart. i sent her a message to let her know we were thinking of her and wouldn't even begrudge her any money she finds! :-)

isn't it great when you can actually see progress, like lifting more weight or doing more reps? i haven't gotten back to chalean after hurting my shoulder and then all the work on my house, but that's on my list for starting this weekend. i'm scared about hurting my shoulder again because i'm not sure what i did last time, but i've got to get going again.

have a good wednesday! linda too if you see this.

Cathy, I think it is totally legitimate to count working on your kitchen and guest bath as exercise. You probably burn 100s of calories per hour sanding and painting and all that other stuff. And frankly, I think ordinary gym exercise is a whole lot easier than remodeling exercise.

I really am glad you are enjoying spinning enough to stay with it. I have certainly been enjoying my whole summer program and I can see that it's making a difference. Today was that killer core class and I was able to do things that I absolutely couldn't do when I tried to do them before.

In my strength training class I'm starting to use the bench press with just the bar - no additional weights - which is 45 pounds. On Thursday I had a hard time doing 5 reps and today I was able to do 10. I just love seeing progress like that. It makes the effort seem worth it. Are you still doing Chalean? Are you still liking it? That sounded very challenging.

I read Linda's blog yesterday and now I understand why we haven't heard from her. Linda, if you're reading this - and I hope you are - just hang in there and keep doing what you're doing. You've got lots and lots of friends who are sending you positive energy and remembering you in their prayers.

I hope you both have a great Tuesday.

i'm still alive--just busy. i'm renovating my kitchen--never do it again either-- and sprucing up the guest bathroom. so i haven't being doing anything exercise-wise. planning to get back to spinning tomorrow tho.

i posted in response to your last posting, but my computer crashed, i guess while i was writing, so it apparently didn't post.

i like your plan to start over and take it at your own pace. you might surpise yourself and find that you're fitter than you thought. and as always, don't stress about your time! :-) unless you're planning for a timed race and need to keep up a certain speed, set yourself a reasonable goal and work towards that. when you achieve it, see if you want to get faster. you might decide the stress isn't work it and you're doing OK where you are.

linda, did you get lost hiking somewhere or just slumping on our de-slumping plan like sondra and i? :-)

have a good monday girls!

We started our de-slumping plan because we were in a running slump but now we seem to be in a posting slump. I hope that's just because of the end of summer doldrums and not because of any health issues or family problems. As you know by now, I'm a big worrier so I'd love to hear from you even if all you say is that you're OK.

When I stopped running for the summer I was really worried that I wouldn't be able to maintain my weight loss. Now that summer is almost over I can report that my summer program was successful in keeping the weight just where I want it. So I now know that running is not required for that purpose.

Even so, I still want to get back to running so I have decided to do what Linda did and start over with the Rookie Running Program that I did before. I'm going to just add that to what I've been doing this summer and build back up to running 5k. And I'm NOT going to stress out about my times - and if I do please call me on it.

I hope you both have a great Sunday and that I hear from you soon.

I have been under the weather for the past several days but was finally able to at least get back to my strength training class today. This had absolutely nothing to do with the super workout on Saturday. In fact I wasn't even sore on Sunday, which was a double bonus since I was still patting myself on the back for surviving the Saturday class so I might have pulled my shoulder out of joint.

For the rest of this week I just want to kind of ease back into my regular schedule but no Zumba tomorrow because all the Zumba instructors are off to a national Zumba convention. I bet that is one swingin meeting!!!

Cathy, how's your remodeling going? And how are you holding up after all that sanding?

Linda, how did you sprain your wrist??? I hope it's not too bad but sometimes sprains take a long time to heal. Fingers crossed for you. Let us know how you're doing.

you go girl!! i'd be crawling across the hall to get back on the bike and probably just lay there on the floor instead of getting back up! what a workout that must have been!

i'm going to check linda's blog--i want to see all these places she goes hiking. i've always lived where it's flat. i guess that's why i thought the mountains were so beautiful. i guess the beach can be beautiful, but it never really did much for me and i'm so used to it now i don't pay any attention unless there's a tropical storm that's really kicking up the water and then i love it.

back to sanding tomorrow--i'm hoping to finish tomorrow so i can start some painting next weekend.

I am feeling very proud of myself today. Melissa, one of the spinning leaders at the Y, announced at our Wednesday class that on Saturday morning she was giving a 90 minute class that would combine spinning and strength training. I decided to give it a try. We started with a really intense spin segment for 20 minutes, then went across the hall to the big group exercise room for the strength session, which I figured would be easier for me than the spinning. Well, not exactly. You know those movies that show marines training? Where they crawl like crabs, do pushups with weights and lunges and long jumps while the drill sergeant is yelling at them to pick up the pace? That's what it was like. And it was non-stop for 40 minutes. I really didn't think I could do it - and I did have to modify some of it - but I did everything for the whole time. Then we went back and did another 30 minutes of spin intervals!! I really absolutely held my own with the other 15 people through the whole thing, which is pretty good since I'm sure I'm old enough to be the mother of every person in the class. So today was a great day for sure.

Cathy, I am sure that sanding walls is also great cardio but that's more than I'm prepared to do! That's just too hard. At least your shoulder is cooperating, but I give you a lot of credit! When you go back to spinning next week it will feel easy by comparison.

Linda, I have to say that if I lived in - or near - the beautiful part of the country where you live I might actually take up hiking, as long as I could always go with someone who had a sense of direction. Cathy, if you haven't seen the pictures on Linda's blog you should take a look at them. They're really great.

I hope you both are having a lovely weekend.

well, i had typed a long reply and then my internet crashed, so i'll try again.

linda, i figured you were richer than the last time you posted! i found a penny in the parking lot at work, a penny on the floor at work, one at target and a nickel and penny yesterday at walmart. sondra, i got one of the those nickel letters once but i wasn't counting change at the time. :-)

i agree with both of you that runners seem to be the "real" athletes even though i know better. they still have that mystique and i guess always will. i'm really liking spinning and i'd be glad to give up running but the classes are monday, wednesday, and friday, so i decided i should run one other day just to use different muscles. i went tuesday and it was so hot. i know i didn't win any prizes for speed that day!

glad it's friday. i'm doing a small, mostly cosmetic, re-model in my kitchen. but i've got to sand the walls because i think whoever textured the ceiling splashed some of it several places. quite a workout. i worked on it 2 weeks ago and then last week and the weird thing is my shoulder isn't bothering me at all since i did it. wonder if i worked out a kink or something. whatever happened, it sure was nice to not be hurting.

have a good weekend ladies. sondra, don't stress, and linda, try to stay out of the mud! :-)

Hi ladies. Sorry it's been so long since I posted. Time just flies by sometimes. I was out of town Friday through Sunday. It was partly work and partly fun and had 4 of my grandkids with me. We went hiking for a little while up on top of Sandia Peak in Albuquerque on Saturday. We went about 3 miles round trip, and I'm surprised they made it that far and didn't complain but had a good time. Of course by the time we got back to the car they were tired and ready to quit. From there we went straight to a company picnic at the zoo there in the evening. It was a private party for the employees and families of the company I work for. I got back exhausted. Then work keeps me busy and sometimes when I'm done with work I'm too tired to get on here. I have done some hiking and early morning walking. I wish I had found $22 by now LOL! But I have had some luck lately. More than usual. I haven't found anything today. Yesterday I found 2 cents. But I had a couple of days back to back when I found 14 cents each day. ANd 11 cents one day and 35 cents on the 1st day of the month. Amazing but so far this month I've found a total of 79 cents. That is truly unusual. And I didn't even count the penny I found in the washing machine yesterday LOL.
I haven't been doing any running lately either. Walking early in the morning many days for 3 r 4 miles, but not running. This morning I didn't do that though. I was tired. And Monday after the weekend I was exhausted!
Cathy hope you back is all better. A couple of weeks ago I slipped in some mud when out walking and fell sideways and bruised my hip and side of my leg pretty good. It's still tender and the bruise is still there but fading. It was after a very heavy rain the night before. I try to be really careful not to fall but it happens once in a while. It was so funny the way my foot slipped sideways and I landed on my side. My shorts were all muddy but I was able to keep walking back home without any problem. I was about a little over a mile from home. There is a park not too far from where I feel with an open bathroom with running water that I went into and cleaned the mud off my leg and hands but not much I could do about the shorts there.

Sondra good to hear from you here. Keep doing what you are enjoying, and don't worry about running unless you want to. I see runners and feel a little jealous of them but then I don't push myself to go out and run. I want to be like them, but I'm not going to get there, or close to there, if I don't put the effort in. But I also enjoy walking and hiking a lot.

Well, ladies,I've got to get back to work. I'll try not to be gone again so long! Have a great day.

Linda

Cathy, Thanks for the reminder! I know that what you're saying is right and I really do enjoy spinning and Zumba. I think my problem is that runners just seem more athletic and therefore it's kind of cooler to run. I'm waiting until the weather improves and then I'll give running a fair shot and if I'm really not loving it I'll just continue with my current program.

I hope that you're doing well and that you're still running, going to spin class and finding coins. The only coin I can claim to have found is a nickel that came with a fundraising letter. This happened once before and we all agreed that coins that people send you in the mail (or throw into your driveway on business cards) count. But that's the only one since forever.

Linda, I'm sure you're busy because I see that you keep racking up those fitness minutes but it would be great to hear from you.

sondra, quit beating yourself up about the running!! if you're already doing spinning and zumba--and enjoying it--why should you feel guilty about not running? there's no fitness "rule" that says you have to include running as one of your exercises! you'll enjoy the spinning and zumba much more if you don't feel guilty about not running. i know how you feel tho--i would spend saturday and sunday feeling guilty because i wasn't running. it took a long time before i figured out that was pretty stupid and if i worked out during the week, it was ok to take a break on the weekends.

be proud of what you're doing, and don't stress over what you're not doing. you are making/keeping yourself healthy and that's what counts.

on a better note, i can brag that i've found 4 pennies since last weekend. target and walmart come thru again! course linda has probably found $22 since she wrote last...

i hope you have a good friday. linda, you too when you get back from depositing change at the bank.. :-)

Cathy, I hope by now your back is all better and not giving you any more trouble. I read what you said about how you hurt it originally and I truly feel your pain. One moment you're fine and feeling super fit and the next moment something has gone horribly wrong. Youch!!

This week has been going fine for me with spinning, Zumba etc but I keep feeling like I am cheating and that I should be running. I'm thinking that in another month the mornings should be cooler and I really should try to get back on the road again. It will be a real challenge to find the time to run and to still keep doing all the things I've been doing this summer. I don't want to give up the spinning or the Zumba because I really really enjoy them so I'm just going to need to find a few more hours.

I am truly bummed that I can't find even a single penny!!! It is unbelievable!!! I feel like there has been a dark cloud over my head for months. I suppose I should be grateful that I don't have much worse problems but . . . I am really feeling pouty.

Linda, I'm guessing that with better weather you've been out hiking all day and swooping up coins everywhere you go but it would be great to hear from you.

I hope you both have a good Thursday.

glad to hear from you and glad you're enjoying spinning and zumba. and both should help when you start back running. you'll have more stamina and flexibility, which are good things!

i went running today. it was relatively balmy--the heat index was only 90!! god i hate running in the heat. i'm still counting down to labor day...

i hurt my back 2 or 3 years ago doing a pilates move with one of the big exercise balls. i lifted it about head level and turned to the left and something in my mid back just popped. it bothers me from time to time, but nothing anything like this. i guess it was the flyes last week that did it. it's finally getting better. it was uncomfortable while i was running, but it didn't hurt.

so spinning tomorrow, then the weekend off!! i might try to do a VERY limited version of chalean, but i've gotta be really careful.

i'm sure linda's out there somewhere collecting coins like it's going out of style...

have a good friday girls!

Cathy

Hi Guys, Sorry to have disappeared for the last several days but I have just been a bit "off" for no good reason. In fact for the most part things are going pretty well. I had a great spin class yesterday and I did well in the killer core class this morning, so really I should feel happier than I do.

I have been following all your posts and really did have a good laugh over Linda finding the two dimes. Cathy, I'm glad your back is getting better. Do you know how you injured it?? I'm also glad you were able to get back to spin class.

I'm really loving my Wednesday spin class. The leader is a great motivator. She really gets us to make an all-out effort. And I'm still working hard at mastering Zumba. When I can finally get through an entire class and do all of the routines correctly I will be very proud of myself. I also think that everything I'm doing now should contribute to improving my running once the weather gets cool enough to start running again. Then the challenge will be finding time to run and to still do all the new things.

One other thing that I really enjoyed this week were some videos on YouTube of a bodybuilder named Ernestine Shepherd. Just Google Ernestine Shepherd bodybuilder and you'll find several videos. I hope you'll take a look at them becasue I think they are so inspiring and I think you might think so too.

So thanks very much for your concern. I really am pretty much OK and happy to get back in touch with both of you.

i did go to spinning today, but i took it easy. if my back started to cramp, i slowed way down. i was kinda sore when i got done, but that's pretty much gone away now. hope it stays that way. i haven't taken advil, so i'm making progress!

i have some tiger balm patches i've used, but the problem with this time is that i can't reach where i need to put the patch, so that put an end to that plan!

no change of course, but i wouldn't have expected any. of course, you would probably find some on your trek to the spinning room!

sondra, hope you're ok. you know we worry when we don't hear from you.

have a good thursday!

Cathy

Cathy congratulations on your money find! You are probably wise to rest the back. Hope it feels better soon. One thing I like that I carry in my purse all the time is this arthritis rub that is a solid in a tube. Kind of like rubbing a thing of deodorant or something on my back or neck and not nearly as messy as creams and stuff. The one I use is ActivOn and I buy it at Walmart. It has a little bit of a menthol smell but much less than a lot of the sports crŤmes. And so easy and I don't even have to touch it! It helps sometimes so I don't have to take advil or some other medicine so often when I have muscle aches or back tightness or neck tightness because sometimes I get bad headaches when the muscles in my neck get tight.

Didn't find any money today.

Sondra I've missed hearing from you. Hope things are going all right.

Have a great day ladies!

oh man!! i found the shiniest nickel i've ever seen and 2 pennies and i thought i'd win the "cash of the day" prize!! rats.

i was going to go to spinning tonite, but my back is still hurting, so i'm giving it a rest (and more advil) and try again tomorrow. this is the first day in over a week i haven't had to take advil several times a day, so i didn't want to push it. but i'm planning on racking up the miles tomorrow!

rain AGAIN!! i don't live in the northwest because i can't stand rain and clouds all the time. i live in sunny florida, right? NOT! i'd be so glad to pass it on to you.

sondra, is it raining where you are or do we have it all up here? hope you're still doing zumba and liking it.

have a good wednesday!

Great job Cathy on running in the rain back to work! That's amazing. Hope things go better for your class this afternoon. We have been getting some rain, but we need it to continue for a while and really soak into the ground. We had a couple of small towns in different part of the state run out of water because the town wells went dry this summer. New wells had to be drilled to try to tap into more water. However I really don't want the hurricane force rain LOL.

I went for a 5 mile walk early this morning and I found 12 center. I found a dime that was down in a little chip in the pavement, so it was kind of level with the pavement around and the hole it was in was just big enough for it. I almost didn't see it. Then when I was a block from home I found 2 pennies. Yesterday I didn't find anything.

Time for me to get back to work. Quick lunch break. Have a great day ladies!

Linda
