Today, I will not lie. I was affected by the events in Boston! Repetition of video set off visions of past experiences. I'm focusing on positive resolve. I will run tonight in remembrance towards a 26.2 distance which I will complete within two weeks. I know Spark runners will do the same.

Today, I focused on selling my hybrid bike, looking at a new race/road bike, and working on something I will speak more about soon! Yeah, I dig the drama. If this comes off, I will be a VERY happy boy! Positive waves!

Was optimistic when I started the Gasparilla Half this morning at 6:00am. I was just glad to finish. More in my future race report blog later. I need to get my head around this.

I had a healthy breakfast with my friend while discussing the madness behind Jeff Galloway's interval running plan. I'm working with her on run, strength, and cross training as well as proper nutrition/fueling. This is rewarding as I am constantly testing myself on what I've learn from SparkPeople and all my other healthy resources. Have a firm grasp on all of this will help me when I start speaking to others about a healthy lifestyle. More to come on that!

Went to breakfast and fell into a discussion about embracing a healthy lifestyle with the chef and owner. Next thing I knew several customers joined in. Two hours later, a few wanted to know how they could reach me.Wow! I was taken back a bit. I don't take things like this lightly. If you're going to lead, guide, or help others then set the best example and give 100%. There's something happening here!

I'm trying to embrace recovery and yet...I had the urge to go out and do a lazy 2 miles..then I went to a special catering demo done by "fitlife foods," a provider of healthy meals that was at the Turkey Trot and our Say No to Drugs 5K.

www.eatfitlifefoods.com/

They will also be at our Best Damn Race 10K on Feb 2. Their food is so good. D & I share a medium sized meal and it's more than enough. Great demo AND tasting! I scored three meals we would try this week! 24/7, People!
emoticon

I stopped at Sports Authority since I have all kinds of $10 coupons from races. Ended up saving them for another day but got these great ASICS compression arm sleeves with pockets on both of them. Suggested retail price $28.00. My price $8.98!
emoticon

The rest of this day will be composing my 2 race reports. I'm still waiting for the official photos to come out. I just downloaded my official Space Coast photos today!
emoticon

Everyone, stay strong, be safe, and embrace the holidays!

Gosh - what happened to everyone? No daily reports? Yesterday was a good run. Usually I run from home and that involves some hills. Hard chores to run in another area, so ran a pretty-much flat trail thru a park. Very nice change of pace - even with the very cool temps. Hope your runs are great ones!

Did more walking today and only feel tightness as opposed to pain. BUT I'm still taking it slow and easy.

emoticon
I'm committed to walking the Tampa Bay Time Turkey Trot and embracing the festive mood. I should be taking a lot of good photos this time around. There are always bands, DJs, and neighbors giving out orange slices & such. I don't want to put myself in jeopardy for the Space Coast Half three days later.

emoticon
In fact, D & I leave to Cocoa Beach on Friday morning and come home the following Monday morning. It's how we're celebrating out 15th Anniversary! Wow, how our lifestyle has changed for the better!

Sorry, I've embraced our temps in Paradise, by the beach, by my pool, and can still run safely in the heat!

What a glorious day! I spent 2 1/4 hours on the tennis court, played a great game, D trained for our Half Marathon, went out and had a fabulous breakfast with D, we shopped, I found more accessories for my Pretty in Pink Race next week, (you can NEVER over-accessorize!) came home, regrouped, and getting ready to go out with Gianna and her mom for the evening, then she is doing a sleep over with "GrandmaDarren" and me! Just another fabulous day in Paradise!

For those of you who live in the cooler climate - I hope you are enjoying these cooler temps! Although where I live, it didn't have to get so cool, so fast! But, it is much easier to put on running layers and I'll take these temps over the 90 and 100 degree days anytime - as far as getting a run in! Best wishes to all!

See if you can keep up with me...D & I got up at 6am, made it to Dunedin Hog Hustle check-in, ran the race, had pancake breakfast served after race, stopped & shopped at Dunedin Green Market, stopped at Serendipity Cafe for a Vanilla Chai Smoothie with Hemp protein to go, got home, got a message that family was in town, took a shower and met them at Clearwater Marine Aquarium, (they wanted to see Winter the Dolphin!), afterward had lunch on Clearwater Beach with them, then hit the beach and we all had fun with the kids, came home, took another shower, then went to a Chili Cook-Off at Dunedin House of Beer (Kim of Serendipity Cafe had a chili in the contest and we had to support!), left after tasting all 15 Chilis, finally made it to the Dunedin Blue Jays Minor League baseball game in the 5th inning, (I had won tickets because of an on line poll I had taken) then took a nice ride home so I could catch up on all my Sparking before I crashed! Just another boring day in Paradise!

PS. IF I had been at maximum density poundage of 258, I probably would have died today. Because I am 170, and in great shape coming up to my 62nd birthday on May 25, I sit here Sparking still excited about a very complete day. Was it worth it to embrace a healthy lifestyle and continue the journey as I approach a year in maintaining? Oh, hell yes, I can't wait until tomorrow!

MIRAGE727, so sorry to hear about your calf cramp. I was in the first 3 miles of a half one time when my calf sprained! I heard a pop, had immediate pain and I walked 10 miles. I survived to tell the story. Hope it gets better!

I completed 10 miles this morning. It was a good and so needed! That time alone pumping away is something I have been remembering all day and will feel good about tonight.

Did my Turtle Trot this morning benefiting The Friends of Largo Nature Parks. Very cool run on a beautiful course.

After 16 5Ks & 1 Half Marathon, I experienced my first race incident. At 2.3 miles in, I started to cramp bad in my left calf. Without elaborating, I believe I didn't train right this last week. I ate right, hydrated well, and the temp was great. In any case, I stopped, cursed, got mad as hell, then in a split second, I realized that was wasted time, and started a slow jog. I was in a race, WTH?

Anyway, I ran slower that my last two races but still respectable. I will adhere to my training in the future and I already have a goal for next race. We're always learning. I'm still standing!

Dee, hope your run was good. I got 4.5 miles in with my faster-than-me running buds. What a workout!

so glad today is a gentle walk day after yesterday's run; work lasted well beyond sunrise, and sleep was not to be found. perfect for a walk with two rambunctious border collies... 2 miles down, we'll head out for 3 more later...

After returning on a late flight back home, I slept in rather than run this morning, believing that 5 hours of sleep might be better than 3. emoticon

Tonight I am opting for the elliptical and bike and tomorrow hard at it again for early morning running. I am getting excited about the warmer mornings and not running like a polar bear here in Montana!

It appears to be looking like a quiet day. Brunch with friends at Ohana Cafe in Ozona by the Gulf, eating healthy, then relaxing and deciding on the fly. Sometimes, the day just warrants it!

I am looking forward to next weekend's run. It goes through two nature parks and by the Gulf. It seems to inspire me to run just a bit better on a beautiful course!

My first race of the year is a little more than 30 days away. It is a 5 mile race where I like to measure my pace per mile against the same race years ago. I have always been within 4 minutes of the same time. At 54 however, I was only 3 seconds slower than my fastest time at 49. This year I will be 56, new age bracket and I hope to come close. The plan is to practice with a 5 mile run once a week as a tempo run. We will see how it goes the next month.

Good luck to everyone!

I'm looking forward to my cardio evening. I've been embracing Jeff Galloway's interval training and, although, speed is not at all a priority to me, finishing and competing against myself is. At 61, I'm just thankful; I can call myself a runner now. I look forward to the future and running as long as I am able.

With that in mind, I welcome those at my age and older to share what they have discovered. I believe experience and knowledge just makes us better at any age. Be well...

Oh My Goodness! We're checked in for the RnR Half!

D & I went to the Expo today at Tropicana Field. We met Tia (TIAGAYEPFA) there at the Info booth, (she had a photo taken of us together and will post it.)scored some great swag, and bought so much new gear including event tech shirts, shorts, run socks, gloves, The new Hybrid Stick and FootWheel, and My CW-X Pro Shorts!
emoticon
I got the parking and shuttle passes as well as great course info from the volunteers who were runners and knew what they were talking about. Checked out the course, water/Gatorade stops, gel stops, port-a-john and band locations! Met people who were in our corral and looked forward to a party! I want to do it NOW! I have to say that the EXPO was the bomb!
emoticon
I also saw the bling and it was gorgeous! I think I could become a "bling ho" in a heartbeat! What a prelude to the main event.I'm ready to rock!

Grateful to be feeling so good... I joined a small group at my gym led by an experienced and active triathlete. This morning (5:30am -- I should say 'last night'!) he had us do 4 hill repeats, six 30 second 'overspeed' intervals with one leg hops in between, finishing up with a two mile 'tempo' run at 5k speed (I ran a bit slower than that for most of it). Tough workout! Instead of feeling beat up I'm feeling great this evening... yay!

Question: What are the cross training workouts that you do?
Lately I've been doing a long run of up to 2hrs; hard work as described above by the sadistic triathlete; and, a 2nd hard work out: of either a tempo, threshold, or interval run. Two rest days and two easy (under 70% Max HR) 'cross training' days which are usually on the elliptical or sometimes uphill walking. I'd love to know what others are doing on cross training days.

I've got a cold and a backache. I feel my back on every inhale. Have read that runners whose glutes aren't strong enough can stress lower back and get backaches. Ran my first 10K Sat the 14th. Chiropractor thought my problem is the lifting and carrying of grandkids, especially the 16 month old. I've tried to care for her with as little lifting and carrying as possible and found that a tall order. I've decided to rest for 3 days and see how I feel then. I did do some glute exercises day before yesterday, but I was very sore and back pain increased. After the inflamation is gone I may try it again.

I am disappointed. Just can't seem to get several good training weeks in a row due to illness and injuries.

Hope you are better, Ducky/Faith! Good for you Mirage/Monty!!

I'm feeling great because I didn't gain on Christmas. I'm a little worried about the leftovers, but overall feeling confident.

Sure hoping that in 2012 I can run more consistently. I intend to celebrate every day I am healthy enough to run!!

Hi Team Members. I've been off the Team this last week as I came down with one of the worst flareups I've had in about 2 years. It was so debilitating and so awful. Well, I am better now. Still not 100% and I still cannot run but I am doing better. Hope everyone is doing well.

Slenderella, I'm there with you too. How's your back now? Take it easy going back to running. I too, have been off due to a severe flareup. This one was really bad. Not only did the RA attack me but my kidneys were so inflamed. Did quite a bit of sleeping and came close to being admitted in the hospital. But I am now getting better. Still trying to figure out what triggered me.
Hope everyone had a great weekend!

I ended up having to take off a week of running due to my back. I wasn't even back up to speed from having to take off because of cough/cold. Did an hour elliptical yesterday and 2 hours of walking today. Will start running again on Monday. So hope that this time I get in several uninterrupted months of running and training. For the next three months think I'll just do 2 days a week of strength training at my current level -- not pushing it -- to see if I can avoid injury. We'll see.

Went to b'fast at Serendipity Cafe, Dunedin, Fl, my hometown. then walked to Main ST. to the Dunedin Arts & Crafts Festival and strolled for about 3 hours. Came back to the cafe and picked up a deelish turkey wrap to take home. Projecting to go to the Celtic Festival to catch some great bands shortly. I almost wish I was doing another 5K in spite of the great time! I think I'm addicted!

Ducky, my lungs are healed. Thank heavens! Unfortunately yesterday I tried some new exercise for lower back that I know I need to strengthen - "single leg hamstring flexion with ball" -- and I must have overdone it. I'm hoping one day of rest may have me back ready to run again. I need to find some beginner exercises for strengthening my lower back. Thanks for asking.

Trying to find just the right amount of exercise to build strength is a challenge!

Slenderella, are you okay now?

I am delighted that I am finally well enough to run again. I am sad that I won't be back up to speed and endurance in order to enter my first 10K on Nov 12th.

Thanks Iffy for the hug. I was an emotional mess the last two days and hugs always help. He's better now.

A hug back to you.

Husband had some routine surgery and then had severe complications. Been running back and forth from the hospital. Things are better now.

Hello to master runners. My name is Melanie and I'm 45. I have run 2 half marathons and lots of 10ks. I have been a member of this team for some time but got lost for a while.
I ran my last half on Sept. 26 and was 4 minutes slower than my goal of finishing in under 2 hours. I decided the easiest way to reach my goal was to lose some weight and the best way to do this was to pick up Spark people where I left off last year.
I love to read about other peoples running accomplishments- especially those close to my vintage. I find this really inspiring. I look forward to reading about everyones running.

Running is just "putting one foot in front of the other over and over really fast."

Hey Spookyrabbit, there is quite a bit of information out there about barefoot running. Many people believe in it whole heartedly and believe it is the only way to run. It is not for everyone. I know it is not for me. If you are interested in it then read all you can about it before you start. This is really all I can say about this. I am not qualified to suggest running without shoes.
Anyone want to give their imput?

Even walking without shoes hurts the bottom of my feet. I had to take my shoes off to dance at a wedding and the bottoms of them hurt. So I cannot imagine running with no shoes.

Good morning. Has anyone considered or done any barefoot running? I read this article this morning and found it interesting.

Wow, did .79 miles walk/jog. Really struggled. First .4 ok but then hip area began to tighten and the pain started. Don't know if this is going to work. I will give it a month or until I can't. Disappointing!! Hopefully just a bad day.

Really? OMG! Did not know that. I was couging up green stuff in the morning. I had a really wicked cough these last few days. Every now and then I cough and can't stop. I am hoping mine is just a cold and not something that can travel to my heart and kill me. I was running today. I think I am on the mend. But seriously did not know that. It must be if it is an infection right?

My persistent cough is really reducing my training. Galloway writes that you can't run with a cough (lung infection) - says it can spread to your heart and kill you. I'm coughing up stuff for the first time in my life. Does anyone have any knowledge about getting over a cough. I've had 3 colds this summer. Any suggestions for building immunities? I've never been so frustrated with colds. I can't wait to feel healthy again.

Did not run today. I am tired and sore and my heart rate has been a little high. Not sure if from overtraining or getting a flareup. I am going to bed early hoping that I am rested in the morning so I can run a half marathon tomorrow.
