Wow, RUNNER KDB! I was feeling pretty good about doing my first 4-mile stint of Hal Higdon's HM training plan yesterday. I'm still happy with my accomplishments, but yours really show me there's plenty of growth ahead : )

Awesome, RUNNER KDB! When I used to run pavement, I never had good enough times to be a Boston qualifier. Happy training!!
Today, I ran 20K in snowy, slushy trails that were like running in sand - ready for the snow to be gone! My feet are throbbing.

Great work, RUNNERKDB! Yesterday was my first strength-and-3 mile-run day, having just begun Hal Higdon's Half-marathon training regime. Today should have been a cross-training day, but I'm too pooped and sore so today became Rest Day 2 for this week. 4 mile run on the agenda for tomorrow, just one mile further than I've been covering most training days so far. Gotta maintain the motivation and DO THAT RUN! tomorrow.

22 miles today 9:30 pace in 25 mph winds! This is the longest training run I have ever done. 3 weeks until the Illinois marathon and my quest for a Boston qualifying time.
Had a slump for a couple of weeks : ( Dreadmilled 5k @ 5% incline yesterday, will do the same again today. Loosely following Run/walk training for a 10k event I'll run on April 21. Did the 10 min run/1 min walk stint yesterday, no problem. Snowing out there today, that's why the dreadmill calls. Actually I've learned not to dread the dreadmill now that I plug in my radio earbuds : ) Keep running, Masters!

I was cranky and frustrated this afternoon and ran a 9 mile loop to blow off some steam. It was brisk (low 40s) and I didn't have a long sleeve shirt, just a shortsleeve and a running vest. I ended up finishing in 71:30, about a min off my best time for that route. It is a nice route, mainly on sidewalk and bike trail, but there are a few nice hills along the route.

This a.m. I participated in a 5k event, the weather was a crisp 32 degrees at start time. I was dressed appropriately, just shorts with a set of compression underwear, a sweat shirt with a compression T-shirt. I actually didn't need the sweat shirt a long sleeve running shirt would have been sufficient. I timed out at 29.59, I breezed throughout the course and finished up strong. I'm very happy with these results even though it's no where near my pr, each run that I complete is to me a blessing.

I don't have a smart phone either, I go to mapmyrun from my laptop to either plan runs or figure out how far I went. You don't need an account to look at routes and make maps, but if you sign up for a free account then you can save your favorite routes.
While I do not have a smartphone, I do have a garmin 305 to run with. I splurged on it when I was training for a marathon back in 2007 and have put many miles on it since. One of my running friends uses a running app on his smart phone and we think that the garmin is more accurate for tracking runs.
Enjoy your hills!

Well that is interesting. I don't have one of those fancy phones but the more I hear about the different APPS, the more I consider getting one. And believe me, I know the difference that hills can make in your workout. A flat run around where I live is few and far between.
On my run today - I ran a 10K Race and finished in 61:31, not too bad for my second time. First time was 63:44. My asthma is kicking my butt and it is getting very discouraging. It was sunny and 40 degrees, seems the fall and the cold do not agree with my lungs this year. However, I am very thankful to be able to run at all as I know there are many that cannot.

CHANGINGHORSES - I use the running route mapper on mapmyrun.com because it has a few additional features and it is easier to use than the SP route mapper. One of the features is that it tracks elevation and climbs. The climbing rating is similar to that used by cycling (like the rated climbs in the tour de France). A CAT 5 climb is at least 500 m at an average grade of 3%. Anything smaller is not rated, anything steeper and longer gets a higher rating (lower number). The hardest rating is HC (in French "Hors Categorie" or above category. HC climbs are 10 miles at an average grade exceeding 10%. There is more info at the link below.
It is just another tool to compare routes and workouts. I can run a 6 miler on the very flat bike trail or I can run a hillier 6 mile with 2 rated climbs and get a different workout.

Had a great run this afternoon! It was chilly out (low 40s) but sunny and calm. I went out a little too fast, but kept pushing the whole way through. I did a 6 mile route that I do often and managed to take a minute off my previous best time, coming in just under 45 min and averaging a 7:28 pace! The route is a nice mix of sidewalk, bike trail, and road with two Cat 5 hills.
Take care!

I only ran 2 miles tonight. I walked 2.5 miles at lunch. I have a 10k on Saturday and I am trying to save myself for that. LOL! No more running until then. It is getting cold around here but it really feels better for running. My big problem at the moment is my asthma and it ticks me off. Somehow I always thought that if I lost weight and was in better shape then it would go away. Carry on!

I am down at a conference in Jacksonville for a few days. Later this morning I give a presentation on my research. I must be a little nervous, because I did not sleep very well last night. So, I got up early, put on my running gear and went out into the early morning drizzle and did a 10k around the Jacksonville waterfront. I wasn't very creative, I just did the loop around the Acosta bridge and the Main St bridge 3 times, plus getting to and from the hotel. There were a few times that I was not feeling it, and was tempted to cut it short to head back for a coffee and a shower, but I stuck with it. I finished at 49:15 for a 7:57 pace.

It was cold and blustery today. I could have run outside, but have been getting over a cold and wasn't feeling up to running outside in it. So, off to the gym after work. 40 min and 5 miles on the treadmill. At least some of the machines are in front of a big window with a nice view over the CT River valley. Looking forward to running outdoors again (and getting reacclimatized to the colder weather!)

Today my workout consisted of two tests with warm up and cool down. One an MAF (Maximum Aerobic Function) test where I had to run 20 minutes keeping my heart rate at 133 and seeing how far I would go. I had to run VERY slowly to keep my heart rate this low the total mileage was 1.67 miles. Test 2 was a Threshold Test which is a 30 minute all out time trial. For this I ran 3.79 miles at a 7:55 pace. This was disappointing to me. I thought I could go faster. My running coach will use these tests to monitor progress and effectiveness of my training program. I have only been working with him for two weeks so these will serve as my baseline tests.

Well, I got out there and did it. I wasn't feeling it today, but needed to run anyway. I started slow, my legs felt heavy and started to feel a stitch develop in my side. There are some decent route options from my work and I took a ~10k route that went through north Amherst. By about 2 miles in, I started to feel better and settle into the run. I finished strong, running the last mile faster than the first five. I ended with a cool down, rounding out the run to 6.5 miles in just under 55 min, for a 8:25 average pace.
That brings me to 102 miles for the month of October. That's the third month in a row that I have hit a century. Plus, I managed to get in 14.5 miles of swimming too.
Happy Halloween to everyone out there!

My school and the kids school were both cancelled in anticipation of Sandy. A bit breezy in the morning, but no storm. By lunch time, I needed to get out of the house and get my 2 year old to nap, so I took her on a 6.5 miler through UMass and downtown Amherst. It was windy and misty, but the rain held off until well after we finished. We did 6.5 mi in 56 min at a 8:35 pace. It was hard on the hills and when I was pushing the big sail of a buggy into the wind. It was a good workout and good to get out of the house though!
Hope everyone is faring Sandy well!
Also, I just saw that one of my Army friends ran the Marine Corps Marathon. It looks like he finished in 3:55 (chip time). He was running in support of Fisher house, which does a lot of good work supporting sick and injured soldiers and their families. Great job, Jake!

Runnerkdb, Sorry to read about your fall, thank god you only cut up your hands,i hope no further damage incurred after your cool down.
Today I participated in a 5k event, not looking to set any pr i went out to enjoy the run and I did. I breezed in at an even 31 minutes. Believe it or not I made the podium I finished 4th in my age group (65 to 69). All went well!!! Oh, one last thing My new shoes were a problem during my workout yesterday so I wore one old shoe and one new shoe, it worked.

Monday: 5 mile Fartlek workout. 1 mile warm up 4 miles 30 seconds on (5K plus pace) 60 seconds recovery pace. Wednesday: 6.7 miles @ 8:53 pace felt terrible! Worst run I have had in a while Friday: 4 miles @ 8:29 pace...a day of rest Thursday we needed. I felt great! Saturday:9.76 @ 8:38 pace. This was supposed to be a 10 miles run. My workout was to run in between 1:20 - 1:30 total time. The last mile I was running hard to try to finish as fast a possible and I tripped and fell. My hands were cut and bleeding so I decided to stop and not do the last .25 mile!

One of my running friends moved away to Brooklyn this summer. We logged quite a few runs last year. He is in town this weekend, so he came over and we went out on a nice 8.25 miler through north amherst in the woods and farmland. It is one of my favorite runs and a nice change of pace/scenery for him. I brought the kids along in the double buggy and we had a good run catching up. Distance 8.25 mi, time 1:10:30, average pace 8:35.
Nice to get in a run with the kids before Sandy/Frankenstorm hits up here!

Today I was able to do a run I have been planning a few weeks. Jill brings the kids to the YMCA on Tues and Thurs after school. I mapped out a route between my work and the Y - with a small detour, it was a 10 mile route with 7 miles on a really pleasant rail-trail, including an old converted railroad bridge over the Connecticut River. So, I left work a little early and had a great run on the way to the Y. I got there in time to watch a bit of Paul's swim lesson and Heidi's gymnastics class.
I did the 10 miles in 1:23 flat, about a 8:18 pace, not to shabby!

Thanks, YANKS10! Hope the new shoes do the trick.
Today was a funny fall day in western mass - warm (71 deg), a bit muggy, and overcast. I took a long lunch break and did one of my favorite 9 mi loops on a combination of road, sidewalk, dirt road and bike trail. I felt really strong and took about 4 min off my previous best for the loop, finishing in 1:11:15 for a 7:55 pace.

PMRunner---Congratulations , I have a tough enough time running without pushing a double buggy, your effort is very much appreciated. The last 4th of July I was speaking to a young lady at the start of a 5k up in Pittsfied Ma, she was pushing a single, she asked me for some advice and I told her to start out on the far right and then set her own pace. Coming to the end of the loop she blew by me!!!!!!
Today I jogged for 5.61 miles, I experienced some pain in my left shin so the next 5.20 miles were . walk/jog, Then I went directly to a running store and purchased a new pair of shoes, Lets hope that remedies the situation.

Had a good 5k race today! I did an easy 5 miler yesterday at an 8:30 pace and felt great this morning. It was a small race (less than 100 runners) and with 2 moderate hills. I was pushing our 2 year old and 6 month old in the double buggy and managed to get in at 22:50! (Although my Garmin said it was only 3.0 miles and a 7:39 pace).

I had a nice fall afternoon run today thru some rolling hills in western Mass. It was about 50 deg and overcast. I wanted to get a LSR run in, I wasn't able to get one in over the long weekend. I figured out a 12 mile route on mapmyrun with some options to cut it a bit shorter or go a bit further. I ended up doing 13.1 in 1:56:30, just under 9 min pace. I was pleased with the route and my run. Looking forward to my first (of several) fall 5ks on Saturday.
Happy running!

I had a great run this morning! It was a cool morning (40 deg) so I bundled up the kids and strapped them into the jogger and did a hilly loop through the woods and fields of the rural area just north of Amherst. A beautiful crisp and clear fall morning with nice fall color to boot. The kids did great, falling asleep after the first big hill bundled in their fuzzy cocoons. I think that cool and crisp is about my favorite running weather!
We ended up doing 7 miles in just under 60 min, not too shabby!
Looking forward to running with t wiht them at a small 5k at UMass next saturday. There are two short hills on the course including a steep short one at about the 2.9 mile mark. With a good run, I think I can get below 25 with the double buggy. Under 26 is more realistic though! Last year i did it without the kids and ran a 22:40.

Very humid and not as cool as a 6am October Florida morning might be. Ran 5.5 miles with Galloway group and enjoyed it! Wish I could figure out how to keep my glasses from fogging up. Not many runners wear glasses, but I'm not comfy in contacts.

Day off today, but definitely will run tomorrow. If weather is good, I'll run outdoors and plan for 10k; if the weather's bad--and it looks as if it will be--I'll dreadmill it as long as I can, probably trying intervals to keep it interesting.

This am a 10k distance timed in 60;30, this was on a TM at the gym , I've become a bit apprehensive about running alone outdoors ( due to some previous health issues). I felt very strong during the run and at the end.

Cool morning. 10K in 68 minutes. I am recovering from a race 2 days ago and my legs are tired. Was a good run though. Plus 1.5 mile walk for wu/cd
I am not yet where I would like to be, but I am no longer where I was.

Beautiful weather this morning! Getting back into running, and did run/walk for 20 minutes - plus extra walking with my dog.

Today the 10k distance in 61 minutes. I felt okay during the run itself, I did struggle a bit the last 5 minutes or so.

10 k; cold; clunky 'cause I'm not running as often as I should; but it was a good run, all things considered. I blogged about it.

YANKS10 - you still went 5.6 more miles after feeling you lost your edge. You should give yourself credit for keeping on! That counts for a lot.
I did a tempo run today - had a personal best in the mile of 9 mins 47 seconds so I guess the interval training is slowly paying off. I can only do one mile at that pace, but I'll keep working.

This afternoon, a 7.6 mile run/walk, it took me 100 minutes, I had to take a BR break at the 2 mile point from that point on I lost my edge.

Today I walked into a 6.55 mile run timed out in 65 minutes. I usually take at least 5 minutes to warm up before any type of run this time I decided not to. I felt strong at the finish, and I did stretch out during my cool down.
Had a great 5 mile run plus a bit of walk to WU/CD.
I am not yet where I would like to be, but I am no longer where I was.

Completed wk3 day 3 of c25k I am doing each week twice since I am new to running and over 65. It just feels good to move my body more than just walking. I don't know if I'll get all the way thru the program but I feel much fitter than before I started it.
I don't have a runner's body, but I have a runner's heart - and that is all you need.

Had a personal best in my 3 mile run today: 32:35.
I'm feeling pretty good about that - I have a goal to run a 30 minute 5K. Seems a little bit more achievable now.

This am at the gym I ran a two mile fitness test on the tm timed out at 18.03 that rates a score of 79. My last two heats rated 57 and a 65. So there is some hope.

Today I added interval training to my running regimen in an attempt to add a little speed to my very pokey running! I was able to get over to the local high school and run around the track before the weather got too hot and before the high school team arrived for their running practice.

Just getting back into running after vacation (hiking). 3.3k this morning around 4:30. It was 33C and 80% humidity - better than yesterday, when it was 33C/90%! Hoping it gets a little better before the weekend or I will have to go to the gym and run on the treadmill to get any distance at all.

Run was good. I almost always run outside but not today.I didn't get much mileage compared to my usual as I am training for a triathlon. So today was a 1/8 mile swim, 4 mile bike and 1.5 mile run then 1 mile walk cool down.

16 miles today at about 9:30 pace I think...forgot to turn off garmin. This felt better than my 14 miles two weeks ago. The temp was perfect in the 50s and low 60s when I started at 4:45 AM. I took a 2 hour nap afterwards which was wonderful.

14 miles today a little over a 9 minute pace. This is the longest run I have had since my Illinois Marathon in April. I was released from physical therapy on Wednesday and I am getting back on track with my training for the Twin Cities Marathon. I do not have my mileage as high as I would like but am pleased with where I am at after having had to take time off for a hip issue.

Yesterday I ran a 5k event it was 89 degrees however it did not feel that hot. I timed out at 31.49. I did take it easy and actually walked for about 30 seconds. When you are recovering from a stroke just 7 weeks ago I felt very satisfied with the overall results.

Today a split session using the tm at the gym. Session 1 a 5k timed out @ 29.59, the second session included a jogging session 5k timed out @ 35.45.
The preparation for Sundays event is almost complete, tomorrow I want to run the course. If it's 90 degrees or above I will not be taking part.

Participated in a local Walk for Cancer today. Walked, didn't run, 10k. Was glad to get in the mileage and realized I had forgotten how soothing a long walk can be : )
